Reasons for Changing Recognition System

• The traditional California PBIS Recognition System requires external evaluators to interview students and staff in addition to observing classroom settings--all of which are not possible at this time.

• The CPC believes it is important to reflect on and share the positive experiences districts, schools, and educators have delivered to students and communities during these challenging times

• To honor the positive impacts schools are playing in the lives of California’s community, the CPC would like to recognize all schools that are providing services and supports during these difficult times


Reasons for Changing Recognition System

• Therefore we are providing an alternative acknowledgment process to highlight the heartfelt work of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic

• We want to provide an opportunity for you to share positive aspects of the work you’ve already been engaged in this year

• We plan to make use of your stories, videos, and artifacts to celebrate the collective work of schools across the state during our 2020 California PBIS Conference in September and we will post a collection of your resources on our website

Examples of PBIS Community Cares Submissions● The Example High School’s PBIS Tier 1 team began organizing immediately after school closures and the start of distance learning. We

first laid out our online distance learning expectations for both students and teachers that fit into our school wide expectations R.I.S.E. (Respect, Include, Support, Engage). This was released as early as possible to students, staff, and parents. We transformed our acknowledgement system to have a digital platform allowing staff to continue to acknowledge students meeting expectations of distance learning.

● The Example Junior High has the pleasure of strengthening its community and encouraging students to participate in distance learning by

partnering with Circle K in the Operation Freeze program. Teachers who identify students as being actively engaged in learning from home and helping their peers can be issued coupons for free frozen beverages. This is one of many ways Example Junior High School rewards positive behavior and engages students in being strong citizens.

● The Example Elementary School has come together to make sure that each of our students has the technology and materials to continue learning from home. The expectations from all staff are that students continually make progress, even without coming to school. First, each student has been assigned a mentor. This means that in addition to keeping contact with their classroom teacher, students have a cheerleader that makes sure they are receiving and completing daily assignments. During daily check-ins mentors ask about diet, physical activity, and schoolwork. Often, mentors and their mentees read together. If there are students that staff have been unable to reach, the principal and community school staff drive to that student's house and check-in (all while following social distance protocols). Also, our kitchen staff continues to prepare fresh meals for the students to pick up daily. More now than ever, it is very clear that our school staff care deeply about our students' well-being and that the efforts to support families far exceed expectations.
