The author/artist will be there to meet and greet, and pro- mote his book, which is about a small town with a secre- tive past, an old curse, and more than 95 quirky charac- ters -- all of whom are being transformed into ragdoll- like creatures. Bailie will host the book’s reception 6 to 9 p.m. at the community’s art cooperative, located at 578 West Main Street, Spartanburg. Books will be available for pur- chase, and so will prints, drawings, and paintings that relate to his publishing ventures. ArtWalk is the city’s monthly open house-like public event when most of the community’s art galleries host evening receptions for new exhibits. Bailie is a native of Augusta, GA but has lived the majority of his life in Spartanburg to become one of the leading and most productive artists in the region. His work has evolved several times during his celebrated artistic career, enabling him to work in both the main- stream and the fringe of the art community. His work has included lush Italian Renaissance-like figures to his cur- rent phase of bizarre personality-based characters. He is also well known for his commercially successful murals that are scattered throughout Spartanburg and his post- modern non-representational canvases. He is also an art teacher, teaching on all levels, including individual chil- dren and adults and groups art centers, schools, and col- leges. He often recognized by his goth-like apparel, spiky black hair, and outspoken personality. Bailie is currently working on the epilogue to his books and is expected to publish it spring 2020. Spartanburg Regional Foundation & Partners for Active Living selected to participate

in The Duke Endowment’s Healthy People Healthy Carolinas initiative

Spartanburg Regional

Foundation (SRF) &

Partners for Active Living

(PAL) have received a

grant from The Duke

Endowment to help

improve health in Spartan-

burg County. The grant

will support prevention

efforts through Eat Smart

Move More Spartanburg, a

coalition of diverse com-

munity organizations that

SRF and PAL support.

This coalition will be one

of 20 across the Carolinas

participating in The Duke

Endowment’s Healthy

People, Healthy Carolinas

initiative.

This initiative promotes

behavior changes that

address chronic issues

such as unhealthy weight,

diabetes and heart disease

through physical activity

and better nutrition. Local

coalitions will involve

leaders from a wide spec-

trum of community organ-

izations in developing

ways to engage residents

in improving their health.

Healthy People, Healthy

Carolinas is now active in

10 S.C. counties—Green-

ville, Kershaw, Fairfield,

Orangeburg and the

Chesterfield/Dillon/Marlb

oro area joined last year;

Spartanburg, York, Barn-

well, Georgetown and the

Dorchester/Berkeley/Charl

eston area have just been

added. The initiative began

in early 2016 in North

Carolina, and the Endow-

ment has plans for even

further expansion.

Research shows that

South Carolina ranks 42nd

among all states when it

comes to the overall health

of its residents, earning

poor rankings for its obesi-

ty and physical inactivity

rates. Healthy People,

Healthy Carolinas recog-

nizes that health and well-

being are created and sus-

tained not just through

individual and clinical

efforts, but through the

cooperation and support of

the extended local commu-

nity.

“Where we live, where

we go to school and work,

how we spend our free

time—even our ability to

access fresh food and safe-

ly exercise near our

homes—all contribute to

our health and well-

being,” said Laura Ringo,

PAL’s Executive Director.

"To truly improve health

within our community, we

have to expand how we

think about what affects

our health.”

“It’s more than just what

we eat and how many calo-

ries we burn,” said Carey

Rothschild, Director of

Community Health Policy

and Strategy at Spartan-

burg Regional Healthcare

System. “It’s how our

community and its econo-

my impact our health. If

we can improve health for

even a subset of our com-

munity, we will have

learned a lot about how to

increase quality of life for

all people.”

Healthy People, Healthy

Carolinas provides oppor-

tunities to bring together

leaders from hospitals,

health departments and

other health-promoting

organizations. A crucial

first step—and one that is

funded by The Duke

Endowment’s grant—is to

strengthen the infrastruc-

ture of the local coalitions

that are coordinating the

effort so that they’re well-

positioned to identify and

implement interventions

that work.

“The health challenges

facing the Carolinas have

been decades in the mak-

ing,” said Lin Hollowell,

Director of Health Care at

The Duke Endowment.

“They cannot be effective-

ly addressed overnight,

though we’re starting to

see the roots of progress

take hold in the first set of

Healthy People, Healthy

Carolinas communities.

The health challenges also

cannot be solved by indi-

viduals and organizations

working alone. Through

Healthy People, Healthy

Carolinas, communities

can work together to con-

front their problems and

make the most progress in

achieving solutions.”

Representatives from the

coalitions will participate

in a learning collaborative

with opportunities to share

information with each

other as they develop best

practices for organizing,

planning and implement-

ing evidence-based pro-

grams known to improve

health.

“The coalitions selected

by the Endowment are

intentionally diverse and

unique,” said Laura Cole

of the South Carolina

Hospital Association, the

organization which is pro-

viding expert assistance to

Ways to boost your home’s curb appeal(StatePoint) When it

comes to your home, you

only get one chance to

make a great first impres-

sion -- and that takes place

before anyone ever steps

inside, making curb appeal

upgrades an effective way

to beautify your home

while boosting its value.

Here are some great

ways to enhance curb

appeal that will give you a

great return on investment,

according to Remodeling

Magazine’s 2019 Cost Vs.

Value Report.

Garage Door Replace-

ment

Whether you want your

garage door to take center

stage or provide a demure

complement to your

home’s overall exterior, the

right selection will make a

great visual impression.

Luckily there are a grow-

ing number of ways to per-

sonalize a garage door.

New color options, which

include two-tone combina-

tions, are growing in popu-

larity, and an expanding

array of panel designs can

help you work in harmony

with your home’s architec-

tural style.

But know that this is not

just any cosmetic upgrade.

A new garage door has the

potential to improve your

family’s safety and com-

fort, providing safety fea-

tures not found in older

models, while reducing

heat and cold transfer for

lower energy bills.

Manufactured Stone

Veneer

A manufactured stone

veneer project can enhance

the aesthetic appeal of any

space, indoors or out, and

can be customized to suit

your needs and style.

When applied to a home

exterior, this project has an

impressively high return

on investment at 95 per-

cent, according to the 2019

Cost vs. Value Report.

Maximize this upgrade

by opting for high-quality

materials that look like

authentic stone, even upon

careful inspection. For

example, the choices avail-

able from ProVia are mold-

ed and colored to produce

a realistic, dramatic effect,

mimicking stones from

unique geographic regions

in a range of cuts. Their

online resources, which

can be found at

provia.com, include design

ideas and tools for select-

ing harmonious color

groupings, helping you

make the best choices for

your home.

Siding Replacement

Of all the home updates

that will boost your curb

appeal, new siding has the

third highest return on

investment, according to

the report. When making

this upgrade, consider

materials wisely. Thanks to

its overall low cost, ease of

installation, minimal main-

tenance required and long-

term durability, vinyl is the

most popular home siding

material. Whether you opt

for insulated, traditional or

decorative siding, this can

be a great way to give your

home a high-impact

facelift that’s well worth

the cost.

To add beauty and value

to your home, start with

curb appeal, selecting proj-

ects that offer a great

return on investment.

Charlotte, N.C. – National

Plan for Vacation Day is was

January 29 and AAA

Carolinas is encouraging

employees to start taking

advantage of their vacation

days by planning ahead for a

getaway.

In 2017, the most recent

data from Project: Time Off,

50 percent of North

Carolinians had unused

vacation days, totaling

19,063,916 days – which is

up 2,428,657 days from

2016. This resulted in an

estimated $2,534,100,595 of

untapped economic benefit.

In South Carolina, 55% of

people had unused vacation

days totaling 10,221,090

days – up 1,393,231 days

from 2016 and resulting in

$1,830,077,692 of untapped

economic benefit.

“Carolinians are encour-

aged to take advantage of

their well-deserved time

off,” said Sarah Henshall,

Senior Vice President of

AAA Carolinas Travel.

“What better way to take a

day off from work than to

travel? By committing to

planning, we can all reap the

benefits of taking a break

while giving ourselves

something to look forward

to.”

Project: Time Off breaks

down its findings by the

numbers in its State of the

American Vacation 2018

report:

* Americans are still wor-

ried about appearing less

dedicated if they take vaca-

tion – with the 61% of those

leaving time unused com-

pared to the nation’s average

of 52%.

* 86% of Americans feel

they haven’t seen enough of

the country.

* 84% of Americans say it

is important to use vacation

days for travel, but only 47%

of vacation days are used for

travel.

AAA Travel has a long list

of recommendations for

employees in the Carolinas

looking to vacation close to

home. Some of the top desti-

nations include:

* Asheville, NC

* Blowing Rock/Boone,

NC

* Charleston, SC

* Myrtle Beach, SC

* Gatlinburg/Pigeon

Forge/ Sevierville, TN

* Beaufort/Fripp Island/

Harbor Island / St. Helena

Island, SC

The top international trav-

el destinations according to

AAA Carolinas Travel

include:

* Indonesia

*bBelize

* Egypt

* Slovenia

* Portugal

* Panama

* Ecuador

* Morocco

AAA Carolinas Travel

suggests the following tips

to make your vacation plan-

ning a reality:

* Create a tentative budget

and schedule so your trip

planning can be accom-

plished in a realistic manner.

* Research and understand

the pros and cons of travel-

ing to a destination during

your preferred timeframe.

Identify attractions or activi-

ties you are most interested

in and determine if they will

be available.

* Leverage your AAA

exclusive member discounts

for car rentals, flights, hotels,

vacation packages and much

more. Visit

AAA.com/Travel or down-

load the free AAA mobile

app.

* Consider booking vaca-

tions with a travel agent.

AAA offers travel services at

their branch locations. In

addition to having in-depth

expertise about destinations

across the globe, AAA

Travel Agencies have rela-

tionships with cruise lines,

hotels and tour operators and

often have access to special

rates and added benefits that

are not available elsewhere.

* Plan ahead. If you are

leaving the country you will

need a passport, and possi-

bly a visa or health docu-

mentation. It can take up to

six weeks to get a new pass-

port, so allow time to secure

all necessary documents.

* Consider purchasing

travel insurance, it is

designed to offer protection

against sudden and unfore-

seen events. Check with a

travel agent and carefully

review insurance policies

before purchasing, as cover-

age options vary.

How to save money on mobile devices(StatePoint) With the sky-

rocketing cost of brand-

new mobile devices, it’s no

wonder so many consumers

wait until their smartphone

or tablet is on its last leg,

putting up with cracked

screens, battery issues and

more for months at a time

before considering a

replacement.

The good news is that

these days, there are alter-

native ways to make a time-

ly upgrade that won’t give

you sticker shock.

“Savvy consumers are

catching on to the fact that

you can find a high-quality

refurbished device easily if

you look in the right

places,” says David Conti,

senior director of e-

Commerce at MyWiT.

Unfortunately, lingering

myths persist about the

quality of all refurbished

devices, making many con-

sumers shy away from this

option. But the fact is that a

large percentage of refur-

bished mobile phones,

tablets and accessories

were perfectly good

devices that owners traded

in for newer models, not

because there was anything

wrong with the device.

But buyer beware.

Different sellers have their

own standards, and you’ll

want to stick to reputable

sources where you can trust

the device you purchase

will be in fully functional

condition and works exact-

ly as expected.

In the case of MyWiT, a

company that sells new,

like-new and refurbished

smartphones and tablets,

every device for sale has

undergone an extensive

65+ point inspection of

cosmetics, functionality

and connectivity to ensure

optimal performance. Tests

verify every function that a

customer can use (camera,

audio, SIM, WiFi,

Bluetooth, etc.) is in 100

percent working order and

connectivity tests ensure

wireless devices deliver a

consistent quality of con-

nection and do not drop

available signals. What’s

more, every device comes

with a 90-day money-back

guarantee.

The company’s state-of-

the-art repair facility is

capable and approved to

restore devices to manufac-

turer and carrier specifica-

tions. This is great news for

resellers buying phones in

bulk, too, who are looking

to save money while ensur-

ing a high-quality product

for their own customers.

“Technology should be

accessible to everyone,”

says Conti. “Unfortunately,

many people who are not

aware of the quality of

these refurbished options

may feel priced out of the

latest high-quality technol-

ogy.”

Once you upgrade, keep

in mind that you can stretch

your budget even further by

extending the life of your

new device with proper

maintenance. Use protec-

tive gear like a case, screen

protector and waterproof

bag, and keep your phone

clean inside and out with a

microfiber cloth and/or

compressed air.

More information can be

found at www.mywit.com.

In a world where staying

connected is critical, keep

in mind that getting the reli-

able technology you need

to do just that, doesn’t need

to break the bank.

Food allergy epidemic: An escalating problem(StatePoint) Thirty-two

million Americans are now

living with food allergies,

according to new data pub-

lished by The Journal of the

American Medical Asso-

ciation Network Open and

Pediatrics. This equates to

roughly one in 10 adults

and one in 13 children (or

about two in every class-

room). What’s more, over

50 percent of adults and 42

percent of children with

food allergies have suffered

a severe food allergy reac-

tion such as potentially life-

threatening anaphylaxis.

Food Allergy Research &

Education (FARE), the

largest private funder of

food allergy research in the

world, recently commis-

sioned a state-by-state

report analyzing the rise in

diagnoses of anaphylactic

food reactions between

2007 and 2016. The results

illustrate the gravity of this

growing epidemic, with a

377 percent increase

nationwide.

Advocates say that the

increasing prevalence of

food allergies demands

action and escalates the

need for new treatments

and diagnostic tools that

save lives and help allevi-

ate the burden of this dis-

ease. To that end, FARE’s

“Contains: Courage” cam-

paign is seeking to raise a

historic amount of money

for research and education

efforts. To learn more, visit

foodallergy.org.

Food allergies are at epi-

demic levels. However,

new treatments and greater

awareness promise to

change the lives of millions

of Americans.
