Opening PrayerDear Holy Spirit, we praise you as the wisdom and life of our church.

Fill us with your Spirit,

so that with Jesus

we may live as the Body of Christ.

Help us see that we should value the whole Body of Christ

and not just our part of the Body.

Help us care for all members of the Body.

We ask this through Jesus, who cares for all of us.

AMEN

Questions for Personal Reflection

Where do I see Jesus today?

Page 8: Recognizing Jesus in Breaking of Bread Luke 24:30-31

ReadingThe two disciples whom Jesus joined on the road to Emmaus recognized him in the breaking of the bread. What is a more common, ordinary gesture than breaking bread? It may be the most human of all human gestures: a gesture of hospitality, friendship, care, and the desire to be together. Taking a loaf of bread, blessing it, breaking it, and giving it to those seated around the table signifies unity, community, and peace. When Jesus does this he does the most ordinary as well as the most extraordinary. It is the most human as well as the most divine gesture.

The great mystery is that this daily and most human gesture is the way we recognize the presence of Christ among us. God becomes most present when we are most human.

Question for Discussion/Reflection

What can we do at Mass to bring us closer to Jesus?

Page 10: Recognizing Jesus in Breaking of Bread Luke 24:30-31

Closing PrayerMay we continue to be this blessed bread,

a blessed people,

blessed and broken in the love and care of one another.

We who eat of the same bread,

even though varied and different

like its many grains of wheat

are one in the body of Christ.
