It’s very close to what IT does, though IT gets much sexier news than we ever do. Our industry employs people in numbers second only to the agriculture industry. It has got a lot more ability in terms of moving the economy. I think its always punched under its weight. It’s about time our industry wakes up and realises it can really pull the punches when it comes to getting government to look at policy in a different way. It’s important for the industry to wake up and know what it is about, and not really be pushed around by every government that comes and gives a new set of rules. Frankly, I’m amazed that large projects that could be significantly important to the development of the country are stuck for some reason or the other… We talk about smart cities when our basic needs are not fulfilled… So that’s the problem. We’ve not understood what we’re dealing with here, and I hope that this room, which has so many accomplished and capable people sitting here, understands the context in which we are doing this and that this room becomes an echo chamber for the concerns that I’ve raised. I hope that in celebrating architecture, in celebrating construction in its present form, we also celebrate our ability to get things done our way.” ABOUT TRENDS: Originally a brand from New Zealand, TRENDS is published in 15 coun- tries across the globe. Home & Design TRENDS was introduced in India in 2010 by Worldwide Media (WWM), a part of the Times of India Group. With a focus on architecture and interior design, the magazine stays true to its name and highlights the global as well as the national sce- nario in design along with presenting the best of luxury projects across the world. >> The TRENDS Realty Titans honours excellence in the Indian real estate sector. In Greek mythology the titans were immensely powerful and influential beings of prodigious size, strength and achievement. Through this initiative, we applaud such real estate brands whose power and influence has pushed growth in the realty sector. ET Edge View T he real estate industry occupies a position of prime importance in the story of India’s develop- ment. The skyrocketing urban popu- lation is already equivalent to the combined populations of USA and UK, with 10 million people moving in to Indian cities each year. This leaves India poised to become a leading des- tination for real estate globally in the coming years. The residential segment in India con- tributes to about 80 per cent to the real estate sector. Reports also suggest that Indian cities need to develop at-least two million houses annually to meet the growing population. The actual number could be much higher as it does not include push in demand from re-de- velopment and shrinking size of house- holds. It should be noted that there was a housing shortage in the country of about 18.7 million in 2012. Thus, India needs to develop almost 45-50 million housing units by 2028. After agriculture and manufactur- ing, the construction industry is the third largest contributor to the coun- try’s GDP, and still growing. It is be- lieved that by 2020, the Indian real es- tate market will touch the 180 billion USD mark, complementing the grow- ing demand for office space and resi- dential accommodation. The sector has been a major benefi- ciary of the strong economic growth witnessed in India since the year 2000. The growth in the sector, supported by series of reforms, has not only re- sulted in significant residential and commercial real estate, but also com- plemented the development of physi- cal and social infrastructure of the country.
