Soil type/condition :Well drained sandy loam to silty loam soils with pH

ranging from 5.5 to 7.5 is best

Tillage operations :

Deep ploughing (20-25 cm) followed by harrowing and planking is

required for proper seed bed preparation. Friable and well aerated

seedbed is most suitable.

Seed treatment : Captan + Carbendazim (1:1) 2.0 g/kg of seed

Optimum sowing period May-June (in mid-hills): June-July & Oct-Nov. (in other regions)

Seed rate, sowing method

and spacing:

8 kg/acre; Line sowing, Row to row distance: 60 cm, Plant to

plant: 25 cm

Fertilizer doses & time of

fertilizer application :

36:24:16 kg N:P2O5:K2O/acre

Basal: ¼ N, P & K, ½ N: at knee-high stage, ¼: at tasseling

FYM: 8-10 t/acre

Weed control :

Pre emergence (within 2 DAS)

Atrazine @ 0.4 kg a.i. per acre/Alachlor @ 0.8 kg a.i./ per

acre followed by earthing-up at knee-high stage OR manual

weeding at 15 DAS followed by earthing-up at knee-high

stage (25-30 DAS)

Major diseases and pest

control:

TLB and MLB: Mancozeb @ 0.25% on disease appearance

Downy mildew: Seed treatment with Metalaxyl (Ridomil 25 WP

or Apron 35 SD) and foliar spray of Metalaxyl (Ridomil 25 WP)

Chilo partellus and Sesamia inferens: Carbaryl 4 GR (250g

a.i./ha) or Carbaryl 50 WP (700g a.i./ha) or Carbafuron 3G

(1000g a.i./ha)

Irrigation schedule :

Rainfed under mid hill conditions

Under irrigated conditions: irrigate as per requirement

Weed

control :

Atrazine @ 0.2 kg a.i./acre immediately after sowing followed by one hand

weeding/inter cultivation at 20-25 days after sowing.

Major

diseases and

pest control

:

Grain mold: Spray of Propiconazole @ 0.2% (e.g. Tilt 25% EC) at the time of

flowering and another 1 or 2 sprays at 10 days interval.

Downy mildew: Seed treatment with Metalaxyl/ Ridomil 25 @ 1g a.i. /kg seed

Shoot fly: Spray with Cypermethrin 10 EC @1.5 ml/liter water after 7days of

emergence (DAE) (5-10 % plants with dead hearts)

Stem borer: Application of Carbofuran 3G@ 8 kg/acre (5-7 granular per whorl).

(leaf damage <10% or 5-10 % plants with dead hearts)

Aphids: Spray Dimethoate 30 EC @ 2 ml/lit of water at 60-75 DAE.(10 aphids/sq

cm of leaf or 10% plant infestation)

Shoot bug: Spray Metasystox 35 EC (@1 lit in 500 lit water at 60-75DAE (20% plant

infestation)

Midge: Quinalphos or malathion 50 EC @ 1lit/500 lit water or Carbaryl 50 WP@

3kg in 600 lit water at 50% flowering ( if 1 midge/panicle)

Mite: Spray Kelthane 35 EC (@1 lit/ha in 500 lit water at 50% flowering. (10% plant

infestation).

Note: Spray only when required.

Weed

control :

Atrazine @ 0.2 kg a.i./acre immediately after sowing followed by one hand

weeding/inter cultivation at 20-25 days after sowing.

Irrigation

schedule:

Critical stages:

Dual purpose varieties:

Initiation of grand growth stage (20-25 DAS)

Flag-leaf stage or boot stage (50-55 DAS)

Flowering stage (70-75 DAS)

Grain-filling stage (90-100 DAS)

In case water is available for providing irrigation at all four stages, it would be

advantageous. In case of limited water availability, it should be given at the flower

primordial initiation stage (30-35 DAS) followed by flowering stage (70-75 DAS).

Multicut varieties:

Irrigation at 15-20 DAS and subsequent irrigation at an interval of 10-15 days. Crop

should be irrigated immediately after each cut.

Optimum sowing period : Showing should be done up to mid-July

Seed rate, sowing method

and spacing:

1.6 kg/acre (Maintain 70000-88000 plants/acre)

Drill sowing in ridges and furrows 30 cm apart particularly in

lighter type of soils. Drill sowing at 45 cm in medium deep soils.

g/kg seed

Fertilizer doses & time of

fertilizer application :

16 kg N/acre

½ basal and ½ N 3-4 weeks later coinciding with rains or

availability of irrigation

Use biofertilizers to improve nutrient use efficiency and increase

availability of N and P

Weed control :

Keep the field weed-free for the first 30 days either with hand

weeding/hoeing or Atrazine @ 0.2 kg a.i./acre as pre-emergence

spray followed by one weeding/hoeing at 4-6 weeks.

Water management :

Convert part of the land into catchment area to harvest rain water

and use it to provide protective irrigation at flag-leaf /grain-filling

stages to avoid moisture stress situation.

Uproot every third row and use it as mulch in case of prolonged

(30 to 40 days) drought before flowering.

Apply dust mulching after rains to manage weeds and conserve

soil moisture

Major diseases and pest

control:

Downy mildew: Ridomil 25 WP (1000 ppm) 20 DAS; Use more

than one hybrid/improved variety in the same year or rotate

hybrids/improved varieties in alternate years to check the spread

of downy mildew.

Shoot fly: Early planting with the onset of monsoon has

effectively controlled shoot fly incidence and two dusting of

malathion 5% dust @ 25 kg/ha at 10 and 20 DAG or two sprays

of neem oil (with 4 gm soap/lit of water) 0.05% or two sprayings

of endosulfan 0.07% at 10 and 20 DAG

IPM Module for managing pest complex: Seed treatment with

Imidacloprid 70 WS @ 3 g/kg seed +5% neem oil spray at 30

DAG + endosulfan 4%/endosulfan 0.07% spray at 50% flowering

Follow 2:1 pearl millet + red gram/horse gram intercropping

system
