1- PORT OF MELILLA

The Port of Melilla can take advantage the expected growth in world traffic a large extent thanks to its privileged location.

• Some ports in the area today handle high traffic levels. Melilla manages traffic below its saturation level.

• Large part of these ports are transhipment hubs (where most regional).

• Average profile in the region is a port that has: • Gateway, 15% • Transhipment, 85%

• Puerto de Melilla moved in 2012: • 33.600 TEUs • 982.947 TONS • 810.883 Passengers • 1.551 Vessels

• Minimum deviation for large trade routes East-West

• Very slightly congested port

• Activities and services of added value

Over recent years the Port Traffic of Melilla has shown a clear upward trend

• The growth curve of this traffic is

expected to soften over the coming years.

• During the period 2014-2016 is expected 2% growth.

2- NEREIDAS PROJECT



Nereidas project is based on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN- T) objectives, paving the way to meet the target of 60% reduction of CO2 emission by 2050; as well as the Directive 2011/92/UE of The European Parliament and of the Council of 13 December 2011, on the assessment of the effects of certain public and private projects on the environment, states: “development consent for public and private projects (port included) which are likely to have significant effects on the environment should be granted only after an assessment of the likely significant environmental effects of those projects has been carried out”

Recognize the economic value of the environmental services and opens the way to be recognized: assigns a certificated economic value to them, so Institutions, Governments, Promoters… can integrates its use from the first moment of the design of Projects, Policy plans…

2. Results.




• Does not compete with surface resources. • Fertile soil & lands not needed.

• Acquire or rent surface is expensive surrounding ports or shores.

• No need of soil preparation, tracks of access.

• No need of irrigation, neither dependence or pressure on water

resources.




Besides carbon capture new restored seabed produce more environmental services (which are not going to be quantified throughout the project but are noticeable) that can be translated, according to cases, in: • Higher touristic values. • Can provide habitat to high economic value fish spices • Sport fishing value. • Beaches protection against erosion. • Coast water quality regulation. • Studies have recognized 44.236 € Ha/year for Posidonia Oceanica

seagrass.




Restoration activities are carried out in the surroundings of the opinion public that you can see more directly the impacts to compensate. Other measures may require a deployment to hundreds of kilometers away for lack of space (the impact dissociation). Local authorities find more easy
