PREFACE
The Register of the Burgesses of the Burgh of the Canongate has
been compiled from a Book of Records of the Ancient Privileges
of the Canongate and from the Council Books of the Burgh which
record the Acts and Statutes of the Bailies of the Canongate,
Admission of Burgesses, Constables and Officers of Train Bands,
and Copies of Charters.
An earlier volume dated from ist October 1561 to 23rd October
1588 is missing, but extracts from it are to be found in the printed
volume "Miscellany of the Maitland Club," vol. ii. There must
also have been a volume from the latter date until the 27th June
1622 when the first admission of a burgess is recorded in this
Register.
All that has been found for the years between 5th September
1677 and 5th October 1691 is a fragment of a page with the names
of ten burgesses entered in August and September 1682.
Contractions used :—
B.—burgess. by r. of—by right of.
Dec.—deceased. w.—wife.
Dau.—daughter. yr.—

If gratis is not mentioned, or a special reason is not given, the
