• RSC update The RSC welcomed and thanked the Board for their continued support into the new year. The RSC followed with an update on a number of key engagements since the previous meeting.

• Governance Session A DfE official presented the latest guidelines and examples of good practice in relation to trusts’ governance structures.

• KS2 Coasting Schools A presentation was delivered outlining the coasting definition, with particular focus on the process that schools who meet the definition will have to undertake.

• KS1 and KS5 overview A brief overview to the changes to KS1 and KS5 performance measures and the KS5 schools which are provisionally causing concern.

• Interventions update

An update from Zoe Carr, HTB member, regarding the progress of her intervention work.

The RSC updated the Board on a number of engagements and departmental updates since the last meeting, including; the Northern Powerhouse event on teacher supply and strategies on school improvement.

• Regional Academy Growth Fund (RAGF) overview

A DfE official provided an overview of the RAGF and how applications will be assessed within the region.

• KS4 coasting school update

A DfE official provided an overview of the current position regarding schools which meet the coasting definition with a particular focus on KS4, setting out deadlines and processes for dealing with responses from schools.

• Intervention update

HTB member Nick Hurn, provided an overview of the intervention work he has undertaken with a number of schools within the region with a particular focus on maths, English and finances.

• Curriculum analysis and costing

HTB member Sir Michael Wilkins gave a presentation on curriculum analysis and costing, which can be used as part of a wider school improvement strategy, ensuring the viability of schools.

• Local delivery plan overview A DfE official provided an overview of Newcastle’s local delivery plan, which sets out what the department will do to achieve more good and outstanding school places in the region.

• Free school – Wave 12 interviews Officials updated the Board on the wave 12 applications that were considered at the final interview stage; detailing the criteria interview panels followed and the outcome of each interview.

• KS2 coasting schools A DfE official provided an update on KS2 schools that met the coasting definition following the receipt of action plans from each school. The Board was informed of the cases that have been recommended for support or intervention.

The RSC welcomed board members to a new term in office; this is the first meeting as the newly elected HTB for the North. The RSC updated the Board on a number of departmental updates since the last meeting, including Lord Agnew’s first public speech since his appointment as minister, which took place at the recent North academies’ conference.

• Restructure plans for Catholic Diocese of Middlesbrough schools’

An overview was provided to board members, relating to some restructure proposals currently being considered within the North region.

A presentation by Natasha Zitcer, providing an overview of the National Funding Formula.

• Overview of KS4 performance data

DfE officials provided an update on KS4 performance data and discussed priorities for the North.
