Brown at Garden A ClassicNEW YORK - James Brown

came downtown last week andpacked Madison Square Garden-the first time a single recordname has performed this feat.

Brown performed many an-other feat during his hour onstage-weeping, getting helpedto the wings by the FabulousFlames, coming back, collapsingto his knees, being helped to thewings again, et al.

During this stint-certainly ashow business classic-he wentthrough his list of standardsending with "Please, Please,Please" which raised the alreadyfrenzied audience to near riotlevel.

He proved himself unique.

Also on Bill ...Also appearing on the stage

prior to Brown's flamboyantentrance were MGM's LouChristie, who reprised his hits,Omen's James Crawford, whodid "But I Do," Excello's SlimHarpo, Vickie Anderson, Atlan-tic's Young Rascals, and, ofcourse, the components of theBrown show.

W W R L deejays appearedperiodically and received cheersfrom the throng.

But it was Brown who gal-vanized the evening and crownedhimself a box office power.

Ragovay Warner Labels'East Coast A & R Manager

BURBANK, CALIF. - In thefirst of several moves designedto further augment WarnerBros.' talent roster, J. K. Mait-land, President of WarnerBros. Records, Inc., announcesthe appointment of producer -arranger Jerry Ragovoy to itsA & R staff. Ragovoy becomesA & R Manager, East Coast, handling producer's duties forthe company's three labels,Warner Bros., Reprise, andLoma.

Ragovoy will report to GeorgeLee, Vice President and Direc-tor of East Coast operationsfor the company, and will head-quarter in the Warner offices inNew York.

Maitland stated that Ragovoywill have full authority to signtalent, to record and to deter-mine a release schedule fromhis East Coast offices.

Ragovoy will be workingclosely and directly with musicpublishers in New York, search-ing for material not only forartists who record directly withhim, but also for all artists onWarners, Reprise and Loma.

Searching for TalentMaitland emphasized that

Ragovoy's operation will be

George Lee Jerry Ragovoy

rather autonomous in nature. He will immediately initiate asearch for new talent, songsand material out of the EastCoast area.

Ragovoy in recent years hasbeen one of the most success-ful free-lance arrangers andproducers on the East Coast, having been responsible forthree Top 10 records: The Roll-ing Stones' "Time Is On MySide," Garnet Mimms' "CryBaby," and the Majors' "Won-derful Dream." He has alsoproduced other successful rec-ords with Gene Pitney, SolomonBurke, the Majors, Gar netMimms, Jay and the Americansand others.

Ragovoy is also a song -writer.Prior to going on his own as afree-lance arranger, Ragovoyworked from 1960 to 1961 as anarranger for Chancellor Rec-ords.

Colpix NY Move OfficialNEW YORK-Effective April

4, Colpix Records' operationwill be back in New York afterspending a little over a yearon the West Coast.

Bud Katzel, Vice -Presidentand General Manager, an-nounced that the label's mainoperation will be fully underway as of April 4, and that thecompany will be headquarteredat 711 Fifth Ave.

Katzel explained that thecompany's move back to NewYork was based on a belief thatthe Colpix operation, a divisionof Columbia Pictures andScreen Gems TV, could workmore effectively if it werecloser to the parent company. He also added that the movein no way was initiated to cur-tail the record division's oper-ation, but rather it is in linewith plans for further expan-sion.

The move, also, in no wayaffects any of the label's com-mitments to Coast recordingactivities. He emphasized thefact that there is no questionbut that there has been tremen-dous growth in the recordbusiness on the West Coast over

the past number of years andthat Colpix has every intentionof participating in that growth. However, after careful analysisof the company's present posi-tion and based on future plans,it is important that the com-pany situate itself close to theparent company and operate itsnational offices in New York.

The label has just releasedfive albums which include"Nina Simone With Strings,""The Jane Morgan Album,""Broadway Soul" by saxophon-ist Sonny Stitt, "Tommy Dorsey. . . A Man and His Trombone"by the Tommy Dorsey Orches-tra and a Lou Christie albumentitled "Lou Christie StrikesAgain." On the singles front,Colpix is riding the charts with"I Can't Grow Peaches on aCherry Tree" by Just Us.

Katzel indicated that themove to New York signaled astepped -up recording activityunder the aegis of StanleyKahan, who was r ec ent 1 ybrought in to handle A&Ractivities for the company.Returning to New York withKatzel is Leonard Adelman,Controller for Colpix.

Command's First Quarter ProfitsReach New Peak

As the first quarter of 1966comes to a close, VP LorenBecker reports that sales ofCommand records will exceedany first quarter in the label'shistory.

Even though first quartersales are normally heavy, Com-mand catalog orders and re-orders have been exceptionallystrong during the January -Feb-ruary -March period, with re-leases by Tony Mottola, the RayCharles Singers, Enoch Lightand Dick Hyman leading theprofit parade.

Becker points out "an amaz-ing factor" -Command "Sound"albums from the Persuasive andProvocative Percussion series,Bongos and 35MM releasescontinue today to be as con-sistently strong at the retaillevel as they were when initiallyintroduced six years ago. Almostwithout variation, every dis-tributor re -order includes a goodcross-section of these albums.

New albums released duringthe first quarter of 1966 haveenjoyed unusually strong saleswith heavy re -orders from dis-tributors, label reports: "TheMan From O.R.G.A.N.," by DickHyman; "The Discotheque DanceAlbum," by the Bobby ByrneOrchestra and Doc Severinsen's"Fever."

In the classic vein, Commandwas well represented by WilliamSteinberg and the PittsburghSymphony's recording of Beet-hoven's Symphony No. 6. Dur-ing this same period, singles bythe Ray Charles Singers ("Oneof Those Songs"), and trum-peter Doc Severinsen ("In aLittle Spanish Town"), havealso accounted for excellent sales.

To get the second quarter of'66 off to a flying start, Com-mand is issuing "The Folk Al-bum," featuring the Robert De -Cormier Folk Singers, and "Oneof Those Songs" by the RayCharles Singers.

`One - Sided Deejays': Blessing, Curse?Marty Wekser, Music Director of WWRL, N.Y., discussed

practice of some of the R&B labels of issuing one-sided dee-jays copies. Marty doesn't object to the practice per se (thoughsome pop people do), since he feels a company has a rightto push what they consider the strongest side.

However, Marty wishes the labels would inform him whatthe title of the "B" side is. He is embarrassed when he callsstores and hears an unfamiliar title as the selling side, andhas to admit that he never heard of it.

I hear that WOKB, Orlando, has becomevery important in Central Florida with its5,000 watts, and owner Jack Everback isbusting his buttons. The music director isJay Robinson and Melvin (Little Daddy)Grace is cooking . . . Maurice (Thin Man)King and Paul White are really cooking atWENN, Birmingham. How's that basketballteam, Tall Paul? What happened to them inSelma, Coach? . . . WAPX is the hot new

station in Montgomery, and the PD is Allan (Mister) Lee . . .

Atlantic and Bang Records have hired Joe Smith full time formuch of the South (nine states), operating out of Miami.

The top exciting left -field breakout of the week is "GonnaBe Strong," Intruders, on Kenny Gamble's new label, Excel. It is a complete giant in Philadelphia and Baltimore and Wash-ington, a smash in Cleveland and Miami and broke in Charlotteand San Francisco. It has started on WWRL and WVON.The only markets late on it are Detroit and L . A TheRuby Johnson and Eddie Floyd broke fast . . . Juggy Murrayhas a stone smash in all markets with "She Blew A GoodThing," Poets . . . Another FULLY CONFIRMED SMASH isJerry Ragovoy's "I'll Take Good Care of You," Garnet Mimms,U.A., which is back in the "Cry Baby" class. It's a GREATrecord, going pop.

ROUND UP of PICKS: Solomon Burke only needed greatmaterial, and he got it with "I Feel a Sin Coming On." Asure hit . . . Every station picked "Don't Let Me Down," FredHughes, V -J., but I predict that the "B" side, "My HeartCries Oh," will end up the nation's #1 soul ballad . . . "MineExclusively," Olympics, getting many top picks for Randy andFred Smith . . . Jerry Wexler and his main man, Rick Hall(who is darn hot with the Gentry's, etc., etc.) have anotherOtis Redding in Percy Sledge (Georgie Woods sez "who willever forget THAT name?"). "When A Man Loves A Woman"is a Sureshot WWIN and many others pick "Love You 1000Times," Platters, for Otis Pollard. The great new Jive 5, "Goin'Wild," went on WMCA . . . Note to Hoss Allen: I listened toboth sides of your Art Grayson on HBR and you were rightthe first time, the side is "When I Get Home." His color R&BTV show is in over 20 big cities. Please send your acts downto Dallas. The exposure is fantastic and so is my man, "TheHoss" . . . Big Detroit play on "Baby That's a Groove," RoyHandy, Stephanie (WCHB pick) and big Detroit, Chicago andCleveland play on "I Don't Want To Lose You," Steve Mancha.Jocky Jack Gibson is now working for Ric Tic and will bringor send you these hits . . . RCA has a great new soul singernamed Kenny Carter and I love his reading of "Body andSoul." Very moving . . . Nice new Impressions . . . Good picksfor Nate McCalla's "Baby Bunny," Jerry Williams . . . "WangDang Doodle," Ko Ko Taylor, is one of the greatest blues I'veever heard. Fantastic sound . . . Little Johnny Taylor onGalaxy is a great blues singer. Dig "My Love Is Real" and"All I Want Is You" (which is quite funny) . . . Much playon 0. V. Wright for Don Robey, but more action in the Souththan the North in my reports . . . DIG: Mel Torme does astone R&B arrangement and tune in "The Power of Love" on

DEI, Sill ELDS

The Long Arm of JazzJazz is no longer confined to

the sweeping and swirlingrhythms projected in nightclubs. It is rapidly reachingout and finding new outlets. And most of this expansion isdue to the adventurous and im-aginative young composers likeLalo Schifrin, Quincy Jones,Johnny Mandel and others.

Most composers and ar-rangers whose roots are deepin jazz will say that their in-terpretations are not pure jazz. . . that their desire is tocreate an imaginative scoreusing all of the best elementsbased on their individual ex-perience and the desires ofthe producers. However, uponlistening to their scores, wefind that the moving, soulfulpower of jazz is very much inevidence.

Just recently we were review-ing three of Lalo Schifrin's re-cent albums on MGM/Verve:"New Fantasy," "Once A Thief"and "Music From the Sound-track of the Cincinnati Kid."

This talented composer, whospent time with Dizzy Gillespie, forged a jazz sound in all ofthe albums. There is no deny-ing that he thinks in terms oftoday's contemporary sound, but the jazz is there.

The question of "Can jazz beused in a movie soundtrack?,"other than as background mu-sic, I think has been answeredby Lalo in his score of "OnceA Thief" as well as QuincyJones' "The Pawnbroker." Inthese pictures jazz was skill-fully woven throughout themusical interludes.

Where It's GoingThe question of where jazz is

going seems to become a prob-lem to those who are not cog-nizant of the rapidly changingtimes. It becomes more andmore apparent that the wordjazz is not only almost inde-finable, but its characteristics, personality and classificationonly adds to the imponderablemess when a definition issought.

When a jazz album becomesa "hit," the record people sayit has gone "pop." Did themusic go pop? "No," they an-swer, "it has nothing to do withthe music. It is only in terms ofrecord sales that we say when

a record goes pop it has re-ceived a certain number ofsales that indicates its salesvalue."

Fine. But is the record jazz? No, it is pop. Therefore, Ram-sey Lewis becomes a pop artist. And Jimmy Smith becomes pop. What happened to the jazz?

Well, this calls for furtheramplification. When a jazz art-ist goes pop, it means he hascertain acceptability in thegeneral market and will bebought by all peoples. Fine.Does it mean he is no longerjazz? Not really.

If there is confusion in thefield, it is due to the failure ofthe producers, writers, pub-licity people, etc., to get to-gether one clear definition ofwhat jazz is or what it is not.

Because of this, much finemusic produced by creative jazzpeople goes by the boards. Theefforts of arrangers such asQuincy, Lalo and others aresometimes misunderstood, whenthey offer a palatable diet ofjazz that someone decries it isnot pure or in the case of Lalo,it is sometimes said, he is tooexperimental or much too ad-venturous.

Commercial Jazz IncreasingTo expand a bit further, we

notice an increasing amount ofjazz is being used in commer-cial jingles, television andradio.

When you ask the producersof these media is it jazz, theysay no, we were just trying tofind a music we thought suit-able for the commercial.

Add confusion to the aware-ness that much of the rock androll and R & B music is per-formed on record and producedin studios by some of the mostcreative members of the jazzworld and by some of the lead-ing members of the classicalmusic academy.

Many of the reasons for thesuccess of the sound of theserecords stems from having thekind of musicians who can playthe music, and upon listeningclosely one hears the jazz inthe arrangements.

Confusion always seems to berampant in jazz, yet the wholematter could be solved if wewould only remember that jazzis really a four letter wordJ -A -Z -Z.

F.- Disk Jockey of Week=

E. Rodney Jones - Not So MadWVON-Chicago's E. Rodney

(Mad Lad) Jones started hiscareer as a band musician inTexarkana, Ark. -Texas. Bandleader Jay Franks gave Rodneyhis first stint on a microphoneat dances-Rodney was the M.C.

In the late 40's, Rodney wenton the air with what he calls"the shortest show in radio."As staff announcer at StationKTFS, Rodney was to do a 15 -minute show a day-that is, ifthe baseball game he followedwas over at 3 p.m. If the gamewent into overtime, Rodneydidn't have a show. Besidespraying for rain, Rodney pre-pared for his show as if it werean NBC spectacular.

His listening audience soonwanted to hear more of the ex -musician and ex -baseball player(semi -pro) and his entertainingcomments about the day's game, played or unplayed, baseball ingeneral, music or any numberof assorted subjects; so his timewas extended to one hour. Andin 1952 when the station's own-ers opened a station in KansasCity, Miss., Rodney opened, too.

From there he moved toKXLW in St. Louis, Miss. There,on a competitive station just op-posite Rodney's air slot, a diskjockey named Roy Wood wasspinning disks. Roy and Rodneywould call one another duringtheir shows and simultaneouslyspin the exact same records atthe exact same time, announc-ing over the air to their listen-ers that it wouldn't do them anygood to tune to "that other sta-tion," because they'd hear thesame thing. (Roy Wood is nowNews Director for WVON.)

Was Program DirectorNext, Rodney went to WBBR,

East St. Louis, Ill., as ProgramDirector. The station had beensuffering from stiff competitionfrom other radio stations, thepopularity of live entertainmentand the ever-growing responseto television. They asked Jonesto come and take a stab at mak-ing the station a going proposi-tion.

"They came to me (the WBBRowners) and told me honestlyhow it was with them," Jonesrecalls. "And fool that I am,I accepted the challenge. I guessthat every jock wants a chanceto see if he could put togetherradio programming that listen-ers will like and listen to re-peatedly."

The listeners must have liked

his programming for it tookthem less than a year to makeWBBR the third -ranked radiostation in the St. Louis area.

In 1962 Rodney moved toChicago to take a staff job withStation WYNR, leaving to helpstart a new station, WVON,which made its debut April 1,1963. Rodney gladly acceptedthis opportunity, he says:"Leonard and Phil Chess ( Chi-cago record manufacturers andowners of WVON) offered methe chance I had been waitingfor and working so hard forsince starting in radio back inTexarkana. WVON is all, or atleast most all, of what a radiostation should be. We've allworked very hard at making itentertaining, listenable, inter-esting, informative, and most ofall, a real service to the com-munity."

Five Little JonesesRodney and Amanda Jones

have five children : Earl, Jr.,Earline, Andre, Otis and babygirl, Nichelle.

He is a leader in the commu-nity professionally (local Presi-dent of the National Associationof Radio Announcers, Inc.).In 1964 Jones gave the NARAan enormously successful na-tional convention in Chicago.

Footnote: In July, '64, Rodneyand another WVON disk jockey,Pervis Spann, purchased theshuttered Club DeLisa and re-opened that landmark on Chi-cago's South Side as "The Club,"featuring name stars in enter-tainment.

KAL RUDMAN'S

Money MusicWould you believe: A teen-ager tripped on camera at Hy Lit's

TV Dance Party, and this created another new dance fad inPhilly. So, Hy and I phoned Gary Stevens of WMCA, N.Y. (Garyis so clever at inventing names for things.) Gary advised us toname this dance "The Schwartz." He said that it reminded himof a dance they did in the Polish section of Detroit (when hewas on WKNR) which they called "The Shloomp." Funny thing. After that kid tripped, he got up and said, "Sorry about that,Hy Lit!"

We are constantly intrigued by the staying power of oldies, such as "Louie, Louie" waltzing around three times. Bernie Bin -nick of Swan Records is now getting big bites on "Wild Week-end." But I have some news for Bernie. He's got a record thathas gone to ii1 everywhere it managed to get play. It hit #1 inSyracuse and many other cities in New York, and is the toprecord on countless college campuses. It owns the record hopsin Philly and up -state Pennsylvania. It's the flip side of "Let'sStomp" by Bobby Comstock, and the title is "I Wanna Do It."The beat is unbelievable. Call Bernie or Tony Mammerella for acopy, and just try it at your hops. I guarantee that you'll gen-erate mucho EXCITEMENT.

I spoke to Scott Regen of WKNR, Detroit, and he is excitedabout what he considers to be a much underrated record, "BabyBlue," Noel Harrison, London. Scott is playing it very heavy, and is explaining the Dylan lyric to his 25,000 teen listeners. Itis a well -produced and arranged record.

Have you listened to the "B" side of the Tokens' "I HearTrumpets Blow"? It's called "Don't Cry, Sing Along With TheMusic" and I think Trade Martin cut a Top 5 Smash (thoughthe "A" side is jumping). It has a Detroit bottom, and 4 Seasons -Beach Boys sound and is GREAT!

The Righteous Brothers; Outsiders; Cher; Lovin' Spoonful;Young Rascals; Johnny Rivers; Gary Lewis; Paul Revere; Peter& Gordon; and Beatles rule the nation . . . Petula Clark onlyhas to have great material like "Sign of the Times" and she'llmake it on every type station . . . The Tijuana Brass are settingnew records in LP sales and Jerry Moss and Herb Alpert aretwo nice guys now set for life! . . . The Slim Harpo is anotherR&B smash that I discovered that has gone all the way pop. Ipicked it up from Will Rudd in Cleveland two weeks beforeChristmas . . . Lyme & Cybelle demonstrate the dominating in-fluence of California on the total national scene . . . "Shapes ofThings," Yardbirds, is a hit and the new D.C. 5, "Try Too Hard,"prove that the British sound is far from dead when they makea great record . . . "Gloria," Shadows of Knight, is a StoneSmash, and proves that Chicago can start them large . . . "YoungLove," Lesley Gore, is a winner. She only needs material. Shehas things in her LPs that are sure hits . . . Brass Ring (seeprevious remarks about Chicago) . . . "Leaning on a Lamp Post,"Herman's Hermits, goes all the way . . . "Sloop John B" a surepop for Capitol. The West remains folk -oriented . . . "TogetherAgain," Ray Charles, can't miss . .. Fantastic play on "MemoriesAre Made of This," Drifters. It broke big pop in Philadelphiaoff WIBG . . . "Message to Michael," Dionne Warwick, will be onevery pop station. It broke first in L.A. . . . "Somebody To LoveMe," Ronny & Daytonas, didn't have to start in Birmingham andspread to Paul Drew in Atlanta and Miami this trip. Stonehit . . . T -Bones getting all the picks it needs . . . "I Can't LetGo," Hollies, is a great production and most stations do agree. . . "Till the End of Time," Kinks, has the important stationscooking .. . Sure but the British sound is dead . . . Harold Berk-man, National Promo Director of MGM, has even revived interestin the British smash, "Have Pity," Paul & Barry Ryan . . . TheBachelors went on every good music station and many good con-temporaries . . . "I'm the Sky," Eddie Rambeau, will be on everypop station. Great background ... "When I hear Sarah Vaughan'sversion of "Lovers Concerto" on the air, it just makes me feelgood. What pipes! . . . The most picked new record in the nationis "Night Time Girl," Modern Folk Quartet . . . Columbia. It flipped me . . . "Chain Reaction," Spellbinders, selling well in Cleveland, Detroit, Baltimore, Washington, etc.. . . Play "Let's Go Get Stoned" out of the Ray Charles LP(and "Get Down With It") and forget it! Thanx BurkeJohnson.

WDAS, Philadelphia has two great LPs selling. The WDAS"Charities" oldie LP and the Georgie Woods oldie LP top cutin the Woods LP is "Sad Girl," Jay Wiggins, and this cut madeGeorgie's LP large. It's out on Amy as a single. Amy is re -servicing Elmore James' "The Sky Is Crying" because of thebig Baltimore sales. Larry Uttal reports that "Anytime,"Lou Johnson (a great talent), broke big in Miami. His ClydeMcPhatter "Little Bit of Sunshine" is a Pick on WVON . . .

Lucky Cordell and Rodney Jones report that the MagnificentMontague production of "Honey Bunch," Drippers, went onWVON plus: "I've Got A Secret," Sharpees; "Gonna Be Strong,"Intruders; "Suffering Pain," Jeff Dale; "My Mama Told Me,"Barbara Carr, Chess; Dionne Warwick (Picks on Percy Sledge,Ruby Johnson, Jeff Dale).

"Make Me Glad," Kelly Brothers, Simms, looks good . . .

Bobby Powell broke well in Cleveland for Stan Lewis . . .

"Good Times," Johnny Daye, getting big play and is big inPittsburgh . . . Righteous Brothers selling well R&B . . .

Jimmy Smith has a giant . . . Much play on the new LorraineEllison . . . "Boogaloo Party," Flamingos, big on WMCA andgreat play everywhere . .. Great reaction to "You Better ComeHome," Exciters, Bang . . . Much play on "I'm Into Somethingand Can't Shake It Loose," Pat Lewis, Golden World (whichis Martha Jean's saying on the air) . . . "Real Humdinger,"J. J. Barnes, and "G'Wan," Mark III, are hits for Iry Biegel. The guys really like you, Iry . . . And your biggest hit will be:"I'll Love You Forever," Holidays.

Here I go again. To get more instant hits from Tamla, geta stock copy and flip it over, viz.: "Never Leave Your Baby'sSide," Martha & Vandellas (Baltimore smash) and a greatrecord. Hey pop guys, listen to it. What an opening! . . .

Also: "Fadin' Away," Temptations (just 'jump back') . . .

"Darling Baby," Elgins, is large . . . Joe Evans found the keyto the mint with his Manhattans. Ken Reeth agrees that theLP is great . . . Pete Garris is thrilled with the reaction onDionne Warwick and the Shirelles. Dig: "Ivory Tower," Jesse& Shirley . .. Marty Wekser and Enoch Gregory are all out tobreak records on WWRL and they are doing it . . . "I'mWalking Out On You," Ruben Wright, Capitol, is Top 10 inBaltimore . . . "Bad Eye," Willie Mitchell, Hi, is another"20-75." Just great Memphis funk . . . Jim Stewart expects tohave the new Carla Thomas shipped soon. (Baltimore andWWRL are on the "B" side out of the LP, "Another NightWithout My Man") . . . Larry Dean sent me rating figuresshowing WWIN far ahead in Baltimore homes. All I know is,that if WWIN isn't on your record, you have problems . . .

The new Darrow Fletcher is "Young Misery." It's hard tobelieve he's only 14, 'cause he is great.

I must report that every R&B record from EVERY label inthe business that starts selling or that sounds strong getsgood R&B play in most markets-I mean things like "GoodGood Lovin'," Blossoms, on Reprise; "Chain Reaction," Spell-binders, Columbia; Billy Preston, Ruben Wright and LouLawton on Capitol; "Please Don't Teach Me To Love You,"Lorraine Ellison, Mercury; Garnet Mimms on U.A.; MGM -Verve; Dore and you name it. My point is: This is not trueof the pop stations. In many cases some pop stations seemto give the edge on the few places available on their tight -lists only to inside friends, all other things being equal. Thus, most pop records that sell are doomed to enjoy only regionalhit status.

It does not seem to be widely known that the great bluessinger, Ted Taylor, is now on Atco. Jerry Wexler personallycut him in a great new thing called "Long Distance Love"that's coming soon . . . Jim Stewart tells me that they pulleda "switch" on the new Carla Thomas single. Only the copiesfor the deejays will be in a special four-color sleeve. They areusing a revealing picture (similar to the one on her latestLP that put Fat Daddy into a trance) ... Atlantic is releasingimmediately 011ie McLaughlin's latest smash (behind DeonJackson) from Detroit: "Cool Jerk," Capitol.

KCIJ has gone R&B in Shreveport and George Tanner willbe in charge of the programming. He is on: Etta James;Bobby Powell; Mitty Collier; Joe Tex; 0. V. Wright; CurtisGriffen.

There is now no question in my mind that "Barefootin',"Robert Parker, Nola, is a solid smash. It's a giant in NewOrleans, and breaking R&B in many markets. The record justsounds great. Bob Robbins is going around the country per-sonally to do the promoting. He runs New Orleans distribut-ing and Dover and White Cliffs Music . . . "Please Don'tTeach Me To Love You," Lorraine Ellison, is getting muchplay (as is the flip, "Call Me Anytime You Want Me") onMercury . . . Many picks on "Afraid of Love," Appreciations,Jubilee .. . The Percy Sledge is a smash first in San Francisco. . . Those Capitol promo men should really get busy on "I'mWalking Out On You," Ruben Wright, because it's a Top 10smash on WWIN & WEBB, Baltimore, and also in Norfolk, thanx to the efforts of great guy, Bill Jamieson (of Capitol). So, Ronnie Grainger in Atlanta and George Williams, go git'em, Jim. It's also selling in Philadelphia without WDAS.I think WDAS may go on it, and it'll break large. It's a winner.

James Brown and an all-star show packed 13,000 people inMadison Square Garden in N.Y. Sid Bernstein made a bundle.James is the Titan of the R&B world. He passes out $100 billsand color TV sets to people in his audiences. There is justnobody like our James Brown. To me he is the most dynamic, exciting performer in all of show biz. He has to be revivedwith oxygen more often than Fat Daddy (and that is often).

Larry Uttal checked in to tell me that "Anytime," LouJohnson, just broke well in Baltimore, Washington, Detroitand Atlanta, all on time of big action in Miami. The ClydeMcPhatter is a Pick at WVON, is on WCHB and is cooking inNew Orleans . . . Abner Spector called to inform me that"Love A Go Go," Bobby Copney, Tuff, came in for two bigre -orders in Chicago. He's on WWIN, and it looks like he hasone-at last . . . The new Bob Kuban is "The Teaser" . . .

"You've Got My Mind Messed Up," James Carr, is a big one.Eddie Thomas checked in with glowing reports about "Hot-

dog," 4 Shells, Volt. Play is on every station.Just received a call from Ernie Durham, WJLB (the first

person to break Ramsey Lewis' "Hang on Sloopy") and theyhave broken a giant: "Barefootin'," Robert Parker, on Nola.Record already is Top 10 R&B and pop in New Orleans andwas busted in Cleveland. I predict the record will be a Top 5smash nationally. Also breaking wide open in Detroit is "WangDang Doodle," Koko Taylor, Checker. Looking very good isthe Shirelles; James Carr; "Love a Go Go," Bobby Copney;and "Mend My Broken Heart," Wonderettes, United Artists(also breaking pop on CKLW). Surprisingly enough, theSpencer Davis is selling R&B in Detroit. The Don Covay alsois selling well. "I Don't Want To Love You," Steve Mancha,Groovesville, is picking up a lot of strength.

Chatty Hatty-WGIV, Charlotte, N.C., Breakouts: "When aMan Loves a Woman," Percy Sledge; "Things Get Better,"Eddie Floyd, Stax; "Philly Dog," Lou Lawton, Capitol; "Any-time," Lou Johnson, Big Top; "Run Your Hurt Away," RubyJohnson, Volt; "Do Something," Bobby Powell, Whit; "Sharing

Treeing the Hits

Alan FreemanWell, to quote John, Paul,

Day's Night" last night and perhaps at this moment I'm just notcapable of coping with a Sunday morning wonder that's takingplace at this very moment, but I can't help thinking that my psy-chiatrist might be the one needing help! You see, if I were to tellhim what goes on in the Freeman imagination, he'd probably sug-gest that I needed brain surgery, and I don't really, but I can'thelp feeling that I should race down into the avenue and put thewhole scene right.

Firstly, I do feel that a tree in the need of surgery shouldn'tbe climbed all over to suffer more pain than it's obviously goingthrough, and if it has to be climbed all over, shouldn't an anaes-thetic be administered? Shouldn't the surgeons be wearingmasks? (Of course, there's a bank on the other corner, and somepassers-by might get the wrong idea.) Shouldn't their hands beclean and rubber -gloved? And when all the cutting and decay hasbeen removed, shouldn't that poor tree be stitched up and coveredwith some sheets and blankets and left to rest?

Anyway, don't be alarmed over it, there's nothing we can reallydo about it I guess, but I can't help remembering a record thatNoel Harrison made recently with a lyric that goes: "I think thatI shall never see, a poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungrymouth is pressed, against the earth's sweet flowing breast, a treethat looks at God all day, and bends her leafy head to pray! Atree that may in summer wear, a nest of robins in her hair . . ."and there I must stop because it's very obvious that a tree surgeonwouldn't like a song like that at all, would he?

The song we all like at the moment is the new No. 1 from theWalker Brothers entitled, "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore"... and the one we could like just as much in the next two weeksis "Shapes of Things" from the Yardbirds . . . Herb Alpert'sTijuana Brass & "Spanish Flea" had a ball over here, and it looksas though "Tijuana Taxi" might be on the way to that Top 20again ... Al Martino still hangs around with "Spanish Eyes" butfinds that Top 20 staying its distance . . . A new group calledCryin' Shames look like they'll figure in calculations with "PleaseStay" . . . There are two versions of "Elusive Butterfly" on showover here at the moment, and your Bob Lind goes into the 20,while our Val Doonican is on the way there .. . I'm surprised it'staking so long for Peter and Gordon's "Woman" to really hit as ithas with you ... The Who look like they're having another smashwith "Substitute" and strangely enough the British song for the1966 Eurovision Song Contest has hit the charts, and perhaps evena Top 20 berth for Kenneth McKellar's "A Man Without Love."

Must away chaps, but before I do, I pose the question: Whenthe Beatles, Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, etc., have been at thatNo. 1 spot and eventually disappear from the Top 20, are theywithout love or have they been the victims of surgery?

Life continues to become onegreat onslaught of confusion. I

gaze from the heights of mystudy and what do I find? A gath-ering of London county councilmembers trimming the trees thatline the avenue, and putting thewaste trimmings into a vehiclethat has been captioned "TreeSurgery." Now I've not the slight-est doubt that these chaps areendowed with fantastic skill for

hich they're highly paid (mustbe making a fortune working ona Sunday!), but am I to believethat we've reached the age whensurgery is no longer the opera-tion that's performed in the quietsecrecy of the operating theatre?

TIPS: "The Power of Love," Mel Torme, Columbia. DaveGrusin and Larry Marks cut Mel with a stone R&B feel on anR&B type tune, and it came off just great. I couldn't believeMel could do it so well. You'll dig it . . . Note to Paul Robinson,Johnny Rossica and Ben Rosner: You have just cut the finest soulsinger to appear on RCA since Sam Cooke. I was completely bowledover by your Kenny Carter on "Body and Soul." This is the great-est new artist I've heard in an age. I hope RCA gets the pop playthat Kenny deserves and will go all out R&B. This talent deservesto be heard. I was deeply moved. So many records are cut withoutany real emotional commitment by the artist or arranger and mu-sicians, that I get those old goose -bumps when a guy comes alongand bleeds his blood into the grooves.

Bert Berns tells me that the new Exciters is starting well inDetroit, Pittsburgh; Detroit; N.Y., Washington, Baltimore;Miami; Chicago.
