In This Issue:
Recordbooks 101
So you’ve gone to your 4-H meetings, participated in workshops and competitions, and served your community—all while handling school work and staying awesome.
Now what?
Enter recordbooks! These handy portfolios will help you save it all in one place, think about why you do what you do, and help you grow year after year. (I spy—the first to see this and e-mail Angela wins a gift card).
Three actions summarize the process of 4-H recordkeeping: Set Goals, Journal, Reflect.
First, choose a main project and set your goals at the beginning of the 4-H year. Then, keep track of what you do to reach those goals through-out the year, journaling also how you’ve been a leader in 4-H and in your community. Finally, reflect on how you’ve grown through these experiences, using your creativity to tell a story about your journey.
Everyone submits a recordbook in a fo lder with a Check Sheet, Personal Information Page, Report Form and three Scoresheets. However, the report forms get more detailed as you grow older, and a separate Story & Photo Portfolio is required for the Intermediate and Senior age divisions.
Completing a recordbook requires commitment but it is also a very
rewarding process. Relatives, friends and the larger Fort Bend 4-H family get to see you grow and cheer you on every year. In the short-term, you can also submit your recordbook for competition and win awards. In the long-term, your recordbooks are rich sources for college applications and scholarships, and great practice for resume-building.

Fort Bend 4-H Star Awards
Fort Bend County 4-H has a great group of kids doing even greater things in their clubs, communities and beyond. To recognize their growth, the Fort Bend 4-H Adult Leaders, Parents and Friends organization grants a series of awards at the annual 4-H banquet, to be held on Sunday, August 7 this year.
The Star Awards is designed to show a progression in the youth’s 4-H involvement. As a result, you can only receive each award once, and cannot apply to a lower step award. For example, if you win the “I Dare You” awards, you cannot apply for the Silver Star.
For each award, youth must submit a copy of their recordbook and attach an application which covers the following:
Step 1: Rising Star Juniors (8-10 years old) At least 1 year in 4-H Complete 1 project
Step 2: Bronze Star Intermediates (11-13 years old) At least 2 years in 4-H Complete 2 projects
Step 3: Silver Star Seniors (14-19 years old) At least 3 years in 4-H Complete 3 projects
Step 4 & 5: “I Dare You” & Gold Star Seniors (15-19 years old) At least 3 years in 4-H Complete 3 projects
Applications are due with recordbooks on June 14!!!

Your Opinion Matters:
4-H Adult Leaders, Parents & Friends
As Fort Bend County 4-H Council is meant to be the youth guiding force of our program, so too is there meant to be a group of caring adults that partners with Extension 4-H staff. That organization is known as 4-H Adult Leaders, Parents & Friends.
Currently, the objectives of the Organization are: to help youth grow and develop through
4-H activities work toward the betterment of home,
community, county, state, nation, and world to serve as a channel through which the wishes
and beliefs of 4-H leaders in the county may be communicated to County, District and State 4-H
As the name states, membership is open to 4-H club and project leaders, but also to parents of 4-H members, to friends, and to any community individual interested in supporting 4-H.
4-H Adult Leaders, Parents & Friends meet on the third Thursday in August, October, January, March, May and July. It is a time of fellowship, idea exchange and business. For example, the organization plans
events such as the 4-H Banquet, leads fundraisers such as the Pecan Sale and Opportunity Drawing to support county 4-H programs, Scholarships, and recognizes the growth of our 4-Hers through the Star Awards system.
Would you like more volunteer training? Can you help explain 4-H to your community? Would you like to see more funding for projects that are important to you? Address all these concerns and more by attending the meetings—even better, consider running for office!
————————-
The 4-H Adult Leaders, Parents & Friends organization is currently accepting nominations for Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Treasurer, due to the Extension office before the May 19th meeting. The group will hold elections at the following meeting, in July.
*Note: All positions are a 2-year commitment, however due to a mid-term vacancy, the position of Chairman will be a 1-year commitment.
