R U OK? 12 September
Are You Ok Day is an annual national day of action that aims to get
Australians, right across the entire spectrum of society, connecting
with friends and loved ones, by reaching out to anyone doing it
tough and simply asking: "Are you ok?" talking about suicide with someone at risk actually
reduces the chances of them taking their life. It is the one thing we can all do to make a real
difference.
R U OK ? Day is about prevention, preventing little problems turning into big problems.

Speaking with your psychiatrist is a wonderful opportunity to learn about your mental health challenges and how to manage them. Unfortunately, most psychiatrists are time poor and they may not be able to fit everything that you want to discuss in a single session. So it’s valuable to have a list of questions handy to ask your psychiatrist, when the opportunity arrives. These may be questions about diagnosis, assessment, care and treatment, medications, and getting external help. This session will be presented by Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Maneesh Dhingra.

People with mental health challenges suffer severe stigmatisation in the community and within the mental health service. We may suffer from self-stigmatisation as well. With these external and internal challenges, it is easy to forget the things that make us strong, beautiful and unique people, with hopes, strengths, goals and dreams. This session is an open dialogue on how to recognise yourself as a valuable human being rather than just a diagnosis that defines you. In this session we hope to have an honest and uplifting conversation about strengths goals and identity.
This session will be presented by Karen Rowan and Anne Marie Keleher. Karen works for Metro North Mental Health as a Carer Consultant. She has had a diagnosed mental Illness for many years. In the early days she felt her illness had robbed her of many things in life. She struggled to see herself as anything more than her diagnosis. However, during her recovery Journey Karen has learnt to see herself as a unique and whole person. In this session she will share with you how she managed to achieve this.
Anne-marie Keleher has a Masters of Social Work from University of Queensland and is a social worker supporting young people who live in foster care. Anne-Marie has 10 years’ experience in
4
human services including 5 years as the manager of an employment service supporting people with a learning disability.
Prior to her social work career Anne-marie was the State Manager of a major fundraising event which involved 10 000 participants and raised $750 000 dollars for the MS Society. She was then the event manager for the Suncorp Staff Club which had 5000 members.
Anne-marie was first admitted to hospital for depression after a number of biological psychological and social events occurred concurrently in 2012. She sees the road to recovery from mental health as journey not a destination.

There will be time allowed for any questions you may have about depression and how the MNMH service may be able to assist.
Denae Crough is a Clinical Psychologist who has worked within the Chermside Community Mental Health Service for over six years. Denae has experience in a range of other clinical settings, including working extensively with consumers with long-term depression, anxiety, personality disorders, chronic pain, eating and weight issues, trauma and psychosis.
2:15 – 2:45 Depression: A Lived Experience. Presented by Lyndall baker
"My first major depressive episode and diagnosis came later in life – in my late forties, due to workplace stress - a result of which I now have cognitive impairment (from the major depression). I had previously known I had lower moods than other people, however it was not until this series of events and finally consulting a psychiatrist that I realized how seriously this condition impacted my life and the lives of others.
Knowledge is power. Knowing how to find appropriate support and treatment options were the first step towards recovery/wellness. In my presentation I will briefly discuss the highs and lows of my Lived Experience to date, and be happy to openly and honestly interact with attendees should they have questions to ask and share. I have been engaged as a Consumer Representative on a committee with Metro North Mental Health over the past two years, and have met a lot of people with depression and other mental health issues; we have all learned from one another."

2:45 – 3:15 Tea and coffee break
3:15 – 4:00 The pharmacological management of depression. Presented by pharmacist Zahra Hossein Zadeh.
Zahra is a pharmacist working within the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Mental Health services for over two years. Graduating from JCU in 2010, she has worked in both Community and Hospital pharmacy across Cairns, Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. She has completed a graduate certificate in clinical pharmacy and is currently finishing her graduate diploma in the same field. She currently also works with the Queensland Medicine's Advice and Information Services (QMAIS) one day a week. Throughout her career she has taken special interest in mental health and increasing awareness and support for mental health in our community.

The Mental Health Volunteer Program has been an essential part of the service and well over
120 people have been part of the program since its inception in 2005.
Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds. For example, people with a lived
experience, carers, professional students, and people who just want to help.
8
Volunteers are invited to be involved in many areas within the service primarily the Acute
Inpatient Units, the Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Units, and the Community Care Units.
Volunteers visit usually once or twice a week for a few hours, helping around the facilities,
offering support and companionship to consumers of the service.
To become a volunteer, you need to contact the above number or email for an application. Once
we receive your application we then contact you to organise an interview. If you are successful
you are then placed on a list for the next Volunteer orientation day. Once this is completed you
can start. We generally have two to three orientation days a year depending on demand.

Our peer support group is coordinated by individuals with a lived experience of mental health challenges and recovery, for the specific purpose of helping to support others with the desire to connect in the community, and who are interested in sharing their experience, strength and hope in recovery and embracing life on life’s terms.
Support is essential for recovery. Research, personal narratives, and time have all demonstrated that peer support &/or peer support groups are effective towards enhancing this recovery. Sharing experiences and feelings, connecting with individuals who are facing or have overcome adversity, in a safe space, can inspire us to keep going when things get bumpy, or when we are facing new challenges.
Please consider joining our group to support your recovery.

The Cadence Research Team is looking for better treatments for people with psychosis.
We want sustained recovery for everyone who experiences serious mental illness, with
no harmful side effects.
Cadence CoMET (metformin)
We are looking for volunteers to determine if receiving metformin medication on
initiation of clozapine treatment assists with minimising weight gain in people who
experience schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.
Metformin is commonly used in the management of diabetes and has been shown to
assist with mild weight loss in people without diabetes.
The trial is a randomised placebo-controlled trial. The term randomised indicates that you will be
selected into either the metformin or placebo group completely by chance. A placebo is a
medication with no active ingredients. It looks like the real thing but is not. This clinical trial will
randomise participants in a 1:1 design, which means there is an equal chance of being in either
the metformin or the placebo group.
Study details:
• 24-week double blind clinical trial
• Physical health measures and assessment of adverse drug reactions will be conducted weekly for the first 4 weeks whilst titration of trial medication occurs and then monthly for duration of trial
• Battery of validated clinical measures, physical health measures (blood pressure and BMI will be conducted at baseline, weeks, 4 ,8,12 ,16,20 and 24)
• Mandatory blood collection x3 (baseline, week 12 and 24)
• All assessments completed by the Cadence Team, no on-going burden to clinicians
• Adjunct treatment; no restrictions / impact on current treatment regime
• Metformin / Placebo trial medication provided at no cost
• Reimbursement; $140 in Coles / Myer gift-cards ($20 at baseline, weeks 4,8,12,16,20 and week 24)
Inclusion Criteria
• Aged 18 - 64 years (inclusive)
• Effective use of contraception (females only)
• Diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, based on the Diagnostic Interview for Psychosis (DIP)
• Fasting Blood Glucose level ≤6.0 mmols
• About to start oral clozapine or have received clozapine for a period of no more than 2 weeks
• BMI ≥18 and ≤40
• Participant must have the capacity to consent and be able to follow the study instructions and procedures

Stepping On is an evidence-based falls prevention group program designed for adults aged 55+ who have experienced a fall or are concerned about falling. Stepping On is a seven-week program developed by Occupational Therapists that aims to address the major risk factors for falls and support older adults to improve their self-efficacy, explore different coping strategies and encourage behavioural change to reduce their risk of falls. The program is designed to challenge individuals to realistically appraise their falls risk and provide a forum for developing knowledge of safety practices.
The program incorporates exercise and education to reduce falls and fear of falling as well as improving quality of life and daily functioning for consumers. It uses a set of 6 practical exercises specifically designed to improve strength and balance and covers a range of falls education topics including home and environmental hazards, vision, medications, community safety, bone health and footwear.
The Stepping On program follows a closed group format in which participants attend a 2-hour session each week for a period of 7 weeks. There is also a post-completion phone call or home visit and a two-month booster session.
Scientific research and evaluation of the Stepping On Program has reported a 31% reduction in participant falls (Clemson et al., 2004).

Kidz Club is a free two-day group program for primary school-aged children who have a parent or relative living with a diagnosed mental illness. During the group, children learn ways of coping with the stressors that can occur for themselves and their family.
