Crook County Parks and Recreation Foundation’s Happy Healthy
Hearts program financially assists individuals and families who are
unable to afford to participate in recreation activities. The program
provides assistance for one program (max of $75) per individual per
season, a qualifying recreation activity can be outside of Parks & Rec
(i.e. school sports, sports leagues, physical therapy, etc). The pro-
gram assists all ages in an effort to help our community build strong,
healthy hearts by getting and staying active. For further information
or to apply for assistance, contact the Parks & Rec office or visit our

I have been a Parks & Rec Board Member for 11 years and have lived in Crook County
for over 20 years. I enjoy participating on the Parks & Rec Board as we get to enhance
our community. My favorite things about our community is that it is small, friendly, west-
ern and beautiful. I am also involved with the Kiwanis Club, Christmas in the Pines and
Holiday Partnership. I previously served as a firefighter in California and now enjoy doing
volunteer work with Crook County Parks & Rec and the other organizations that I am in-

that I truly believe in. My favorite thing about our community is the volunteerism that
is so abundant.
I have been a board member for 1 year; I was born and raised in Crook County then
moved away in 1972, returning in 2014. I enjoy being on the Parks & Rec Board to sup-
port the recreation that we provide for the community. I love being a part of such a grow-
ing community. I am also a board member for the Crook County Fair, Vice-Chair for
Christmas in the Pines and Queen Coordinator for Crooked River Roundup; a member
of Kiwanis, Soroptimist, Crook County Quilt Gild and Crook County Garden Club.
I have been a board member since May 2016 and also serve on the Parks & Rec Foun-
dation Board; I grew up in Crook County, moved away for awhile and returned in 2014. I
enjoy being on the Parks & Rec Board as I get to participate in developing a part of our
community that so many people enjoy. My favorite things about our community is the
history, culture and strong community spirit. During the day I am the Executive Director
for the Prineville Chamber of Commerce; in my spare time I enjoy spending time in the
outdoors, exploring the remote areas of our county and discovering historical sites; I al-
so enjoy volunteering for local community projects and events.

Mission Statement -
The Crook County Parks & Recreation Foundation (CCPRF) raises, accepts and distributes funds to enhance the use, acquisition and development of parkland and recreational facilities and services within Crook Coun-
ty Parks & Recreation District.
The Parks & Rec Foundation was founded in 1988. The Foundation gives individuals and business members of
our community an avenue to support parks and recreation programs and facilities through donations and volun-
teer support. The Foundation is a 501C3 non-profit tax-exempt organization that accepts donations on behalf of
the Crook County Parks & Recreation District; donors can designate a program or activity they would like to

I have been a Parks & Rec Foundation Board member for over 8 years; I have lived in
Crook County for 40 years. I enjoy being on the Foundation Board with the goal of help-
ing kids have a chance to enjoy sports and giving them access to all activities. My favor-
ite thing about our community is the friendly small town environment & the access to out-
door activities. I am the head tennis coach for Crook County High School, I love coach-
ing kids of all ages; I was previously the youth coordinator for the US Tennis Association
Junior Team; I am a former Chamber of Commerce member; a member of the US Pro-
fessional Tennis Association; I enjoy fishing, hunting & working with wood. I was former-
ly a pilot working in the aviation field; worked in agriculture as a pesticide consultant;
worked in commercial & residential construction field; I am now semi-retired.
I have been a Parks & Rec Foundation Board member since 1982. I enjoy being on the
board as it allows me to be a part of our community. My favorite thing about our com-
munity is the way that people come together as a family. Fundraising is one of my
strong points, I enjoy helping the Foundation with fundraising, organizing and preparing
their events and being a part of a Parks & Rec system that cares about the people, our
community, a family.
Julie Rohaly- I have been a Parks & Rec Foundation Board member since August 2016; I moved to
Crook County in May 2013. I like being a Foundation Board member as I get to work with
others to improve the recreation activities in Prineville; I like working on special events &
charitable functions with members of the Foundation as well as the with the community
at-large. My favorite thing about our community is that whenever I am in town I always
see someone I know, it’s fun to say “Hi” to so many people. I recently joined the Ochoco
Players & acted in a couple of their productions; I found out that I enjoy painting by trying
my hand in a couple of classes in town; I am an NFL (Saints) & MLB (Dodgers) fan. I am
a retired real estate attorney; moved to Prineville with my husband who is a recreational
pilot with a longing for wide open skies and sun, we live in the local airpark with two dogs,
a small fishing boat & a beautiful hand-crafted airplane.

Little Fish -$10 Instructors lead songs and games to prepare parents and their babies for a lifelong love of
swimming. Skills developed: Breath control, floating, kicking and arm motions. Parent or caregiver must be in water.
Ages: 6 - 18 months. Tuesdays and Thursdays
Big Fish -$15 Continues developing skills, creating more independence. (Parent or caregiver must be in water.
Ages: 18 Months – 3yrs. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays
Instructor Aid Class -$30 Introduces swim lesson teaching skills for young and aspiring teachers. Stu-
dents will learn how to manage a swimming class as well as swim instructing techniques and skills. Volunteer teach-
ing opportunities will be available for students who take this class.

Adult Swimming Lessons/Stroke Improvement -$30 Specialty instructors can help you learn to
swim, improve your stroke technique, get introduced to lap swimming or prepare to compete in triathlons. No expe-

Swim Lesson Descriptions
Level 1-Kiddie Pool - Focuses on learning breath control (bobs), general adaptation and comfort in the water. To pass level 1 a child must comfortably do 10 bobs fully submerged, blowing out bubbles and assisted front, back and side floats.
Level 2 - Focuses on independent floating on their front, back and both sides for 5 seconds. Building off of what they have learned in level 1, ability to push off of the wall and into an unassisted float comfortably before recovering. To pass level 2 children must be able to float unassisted on their front and their back for 5 seconds; must also be able to float with assistance on each side for 5 seconds.
Level 3 - Focuses on learning the proper kick techniques. Children learn to correctly kick on their front, back and both sides as well as learning the body dolphin kick. Side breathing is introduced in this level. In order to pass level 3 children must be able to kick on their front and back unassisted for 20 feet; on their sides with assis-tance for 20 feet and body dolphin kick for 20 feet.
Level 4 - Builds on the skills learned in previous levels, focusing on correct kicking and side breathing. Chil-dren will learn how to properly use their arms in freestyle with side breathing and to kick streamline on their back. To pass level 4 children must be able to swim freestyle for 20 feet, assisted side kicking for 20 feet and streamline kicking on their back for 20 feet.
Level 5 - Focuses on improving the freestyle technique with bi-lateral breathing and learning the six-kick-switch skill to help them effectively learn freestyle. Children also learn to effectively kick on their back while ro-tating their shoulders in preparation for learning full backstroke in level 6. To pass level 5 children must be able to show freestyle with bi-lateral breathing for 40 feet, perform the six-kick-switch skill for 20 feet and kick on their back for 20 feet with shoulder rotation.
Level 6 - Works on building endurance in freestyle with bi-lateral breathing as well as learning full backstroke and butterfly. Children will learn to perform the breaststroke kick. To pass level 6 children must perform full freestyle with bi-lateral breathing for 25 yards, full backstroke for 25 yards, breaststroke kick for 15 yards and full butterfly adequately for 15 yards.
Level 7 - Enhances backstroke by using a bent arm finish, learn to effectively swim elementary backstroke and full butterfly with correct sequencing as well as the full breaststroke kick. Will also focus on building swimming endurance and distance. To pass level 7 each child must perform freestyle for 50 yards, backstroke with a bent arm finish for 25 yards, elementary backstroke for 25 yards, full technical breaststroke kick for 15 yards and full butterfly with correct sequencing for 15 yards. Level 7 will also begin to introduce students to other recreational swimming activities.
Level 8 - Enables endurance and distance. At this level children should have full technical mastery of freestyle, backstroke and elementary backstroke, as well as working toward full technical mastery of breaststroke and but-terfly. To pass level 8 children must swim freestyle for 100 yards, backstroke for 50 yards, breaststroke for 25 yards and butterfly for 15 yards. Level 8 will also include an introduction to lifeguarding skills and other recrea-tional swimming activities.

Get to know your Tennis Instructor—Lloyd Rodgers: Lloyd is the head tennis coach for Crook County
High School; he loves coaching kids of all ages. Lloyd was previously the youth coordinator for the US Tennis Association Junior Team and is a member of the US Professional Tennis Association. Lloyd enjoys the great outdoors and is now semi-retired.

Location: Crook County High School Tennis Courts Fee: $25.00 Ages: 3 - 6 years old This tennis program focuses on hand-eye-ball coordination. The drills are fun and include lots of hoops and cones, crazy balls, spider balls and beach balls for skill development and coordination.

Get to know your Youth Karate Instructor - Dean Bonanno: Dean has been involved in athletics all of
his life: he played football, wrestled, participated in track and field in high school and in college he continued to play foot-
ball and wrestle. He did some training in martial arts (Judo, Kenpo) after college but did not stick with it. After he married
and began raising children, the focus on activities was on what the children wanted to do. Dean has 5 children: 4 girls
and a boy. When the three older girls were growing up, they wanted to participate in karate together., waiting till the
youngest of the three was able to sign up for the Adult Karate class through Crook County Parks and Rec. When they
signed up, Dean drove them to class and like any good parent, sat in the stands and watched them; watching them lasted for about 6
months, at that point he also signed up for the karate class and it has been a great journey and experience ever since. The three girls all
tested together to earn their black belts and Dean tested about a year later for his. He is currently a second degree black belt in Shudo-
kan Karate. Dean is in his 10th year of training under Sterling Osborne.

Location: Crooked River School Gym Fee: $40.00 Ages: 6 - 12 years old An introductory class to Oriental Martial Arts using traditional (Okinawan) Shudokan Karate. In addition, participants will be introduced to Jiu Jitsu, Aikido and Judo. This class will be fast paced and focus on breathing, stances, movement, bal-ance, coordination, awareness and concentration. Participants will learn line drills, kata and sparring. The emphasis is on fitness, self-defense and basic techniques.

Enjoy a day floating down 11 miles of the Deschutes River. Conquer class III and class IV rapids, including the waves of
Wapanitia, Lower Elevator, the hole at Box Car and Oak Springs. Meet at the swimming pool parking lot for transporta-
tion to the Deschutes River. *Peak 7 is a permittee of the BLM Prineville District. Registration deadline - July 18th.

Get to know your Dog Obedience instructor Gail Schmutz: Gail began teaching dog
obedience for Parks & Rec 10 years ago. In her class, dog owners will teach their dogs to sit, stay down, walk
on a leash, come, stay, general dog training skills and general dog ownership skills. Gail has been teaching dog
obedience for 30 years, through private instruction involving dog owners who wish to compete in AKC dog
obedience events or how to train their dog to be a wonderful companion in their home. She has been a leader
for the Colossal Canines and the Crook County 4H Dog Club, teaching 4H members how to train their dogs
and compete at the county and state fairs. Currently Gail has three golden retrievers and competes in the American Kennel
Club Obedience Trials, earning many obedience titles with her dogs which includes 3 utility titles.

Get to know your Dance Instructor -Mica Stafford: For Prineville native Mica Stafford, dance has been a part of
her life since childhood. Growing up she studied various dance disciplines such as ballet, jazz and tap at High Desert Dance Arts, under the tutelage of Ms. Caroline Kaiser. She added gymnastics to her repertoire at the age of 8 and pro-gressed in the sport, ultimately being coached by and competing for famed Coach Bela Karolyi out of Houston, TX. Mica continued to pursue dance during her college years, studying modern dance at Portland Community Col-lege. Upon moving back to Prineville, Mica returned to her dance roots, teaching jazz at High Desert Dance Arts and working to inspire a love of dance and movement in her students. When the opportunity arose to become the owner/director of HDDA, Mica could imagine no better way to help spread her vision of bringing arts to the community as well as providing a place to encourage students to express themselves and to love the art of dance, both as a recreational pur-suit and in the competitive realm. Fun and learning in a caring, energetic environment will be hallmarks of Mica's classes.

Get to know your CPR/First Aid and Works Zone Safety Instructor Frank Martinez: Frank
is part of Crook County’s Fire and Rescue team as a firefighter/EMT, he also trains on tactical elements out of Florida for EMS training with Law Enforcement, Military and Region 6 Medical Team in Oregon (Forest Service). Frank was in the Marine Corps in the State of Colorado from 1969 to 1972, served in Vietnam, upon return to the United States decided to move to Oregon, at which time joined the Oregon National Guard for 26 years and retired as a Company First Sergeant; worked as a millwright for 21 years; worked for the State Highway Division as maintenance and safety manager; taught Emergency Driving for new Emer-gency Medical Technicians at Central Oregon Community College; trained at College Station in Texas for National Emergency Response and Rescue in Incident Command System.

Get to know your Firearms Safety Instructor Michael Boyd: Michael has been a sworn law enforce-
ment officer for 33 years; he has been working as a firearms instructor for at least that long also. Michael has taught thousands of students to safely and competently use firearms in law enforcement and the civilian world since the 1980's. Michael is a multi-certified firearms in-structor who recognizes the National Rifle Association and the Oregon Department of Pub-lic Safety Standards and Training. Michael is a competitive shooter with several state and na-tional titles, he holds the highest ranking possible in the United States Practical Shooting As-sociation of Grandmaster.

MFA in photography. He has studied with noted pictorials including Ansel Adams. Brent has more
