About Exeter Northcott Theatre
Outstanding theatre in the heart of Devon
Located at the heart of the University of Exeter’s
Streatham Campus, Exeter Northcott Theatre welcomes
more than 84,000 visitors a year.
Currently celebrating our 50th Anniversary Year, the 460
seat auditorium works exceptionally well for all types of
theatre, music, opera and dance, and our audiences are
notably engaged and enthusiastic.
Artistic and Executive Director Daniel Buckroyd took
over in August 2018 to consolidate and develop the
Northcott’s return as a producing house in 2015.
Recent productions and co-productions include: Dick
Whittington, People, Places & Things (Headlong, NT,
Home & Exeter Northcott); The Railway Children
(Exeter Northcott and Nick Brooke Ltd co-production
(National Tour);
The Comedy of Errors (outdoor Shakespeare South
West Tour Summer 2017); Dracula: The Bloody
Truth (Le Navet Bete in association with Exeter
Northcott); J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan; French Without
Tears (Exeter Northcott, English Touring Theatre and
Orange Tree Theatre co-production); This Is My
Body (Exeter Northcott and Ten Ten Productions –
Anti Slavery Day Media Award Winner 2015); Harold
Pinter’s Betrayal; A Christmas Carol (Exeter
Northcott and Creative Cow co-production).
Further details about the Exeter Northcott Theatre and its current season can be found on our website www.exeternorthcott.co.uk
Exeter Northcott Theatre has also developed a radical
interdisciplinary commissioning programme – IMPACT.
In March 2017 we successfully piloted Beyond My
Control, an interactive performance about epilepsy,
presented in partnership with the University of Exeter,
and in spring 2018 the show embarked on a national
tour.
“Fascinating and effective production about epilepsy
modelling – quite emotional too!”
Audience Response 2017
In addition to our strong drama offer we present a
varied dance programme, which includes regular
visits from Richard Alston Dance Company, Jasmin
Vardimon, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures,
Mark Bruce Company and BalletBoyz.
We have a long-standing relationship with English
Touring Opera who visit twice a year and are the
lead ticketing agent for Bournemouth Symphony
Orchestra who perform in the University of Exeter’s
Great Hall, adjacent to the theatre.
Our Education & Reach Out department is busier than
ever. In 2017 we successfully launched Easter and
Summer Schools, which offered 40 young people the
opportunity to work intensively, creatively and
collaboratively to create a piece of theatre from
scratch in a week. 2017 also saw the re-launch of the
Northcott Young Company. Eighteen young people
took to the stage in September to present RIME –
their twenty-first century staging of Samuel Taylor-
Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
This autumn, the theatre is the lead producer for a major new revival of Schiller’s Don Carlos, directed by Gadi
Roll and starring Tom Burke as the Marquis of Posa, and in spring 2019 will be co-producing The Life I Lead - a
new comedy starring Miles Jupp.
