British Heart Foundation Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the UK’s single biggest killer and is responsible for

almost 74,000 deaths in the UK every year: the equivalent of an average of 200 deaths

every day or someone dying of a heart attack every seven minutes. Environmental

factors, increasing rates of obesity and excessive alcohol consumption are amongst the

causes of over 750,000 people currently living with heart failure.

For over 50 years, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has funded research, education,

care and awareness campaigns to prevent heart and circulatory conditions; its vision is

one where people do not die prematurely or suffer from heart disease. Its pioneering

research has transformed the lives of people affected by these conditions, improving

methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The charity provides vital information to help people reduce their own risk of heart

disease and leads campaigns to encourage Government to implement policies that

minimise the likelihood of developing heart conditions. Recently, the leadership team

have reviewed the strategic approach of the BHF with the help of staff, supporters and

stakeholders. A new strategic plan is being developed to give a powerful focus on the

fight for every heartbeat, and enable the BHF to lead the fight against cardiovascular

disease more effectively.

The new approach centres on an updated mission and vision:

“Our mission is to win the fight against cardiovascular disease.”

“Our vision is a world in which people do not die prematurely or suffer from

cardiovascular disease.”

Our values

Our values ensure that everything we do as an organisation is aligned to the Fight For

Every Heartbeat. They are a call to action for every one of us and the benchmark against

which we measure ourselves and our applicants:

Brave It takes heroic qualities to fight heart disease

Informed Our fight is real. We’re always armed with knowledge and seek to know more. This

makes the story behind our fight authentic.

Compassionate We take personal interest in the hearts and minds of everyone around us.

Driven We know the need is urgent. Our relentless determination to succeed ensures we use the

knowledge we have to make things happen.

The work will be underpinned by seven strategic themes, each delivered in keeping with the BHF’s core values: to be brave, compassionate, driven and informed:

1 Research: We will build on our position as a research driven charity and the UK’s

leading independent funder of cardiovascular research.

2 Prevention: We will promote cardiovascular health and the prevention of

cardiovascular disease.

3 Survival: We will lead the fight to improve the UK’s rates of survival following a

cardiovascular event.

4 Support: We will make sure patients and their families receive the best possible

support and information.

5 Listen, engage and influence: Our work will be informed by the needs and views

of patients and key stakeholders.

6 Grow income: We will deliver an ambitious programme of activity to raise

more money.

7 Run a world class organisation: We will ensure that every part of the charity

is well-led, effective and promotes the spirit and values of the Fight for

Every Heartbeat.

Research is a fundamental part of the BHF’s work, offering funding for project and

programme grants and research fellowships, which have led to ground-breaking

discoveries around the causes and treatments for heart disease. The BHF has also

funded the creation of Centres for Regenerative Medicine, bringing together leading

medicine researchers ultimately focusing on pioneering clinical trials.

Other priorities for the charity are awareness campaigns in schools and the workplace,

and lobbying Government for the prioritisation of heart disease in the national health

agenda.

The BHF is wholly funded by the generosity of donors, either through traditional

fundraising methods, retailing or through legacies left to them in supporters’ wills.

The BHF receives minimal public funding and every New Year brings a fresh challenge in

order to fund even more crucial work to fight the UK’s single biggest killer. Over the past

year, over £95m has been raised for the BHF, through initiatives such as the Mending

Broken Hearts Appeal and the famous London to Brighton Bike Ride.

The BHF is a group structure, with four wholly owned subsidiaries, and the BHF runs the

largest chain of charity shops in the UK: its retail trading subsidiary operates over 730

shops nationwide. These shops are predominantly staffed by over 20,000 volunteers and

in 2012 were recognised by the Charity Retail Awards as the most profitable charity

retailer. Retail profits are donated to the parent charity. In 2012/13, the British Heart

Foundation group had a turnover of over £260m. Of this, its fundraising income totalled

nearly £100m (an increase of 3% on previous year) and its retail trading income over

£160m. The retail trading subsidiary donated its profits of over £31m to the Charity.

As a result, the BHF spent over £120m on its charitable activities, with three quarters of its

total expenditure on research and a quarter on prevention and care. The BHF is an

organisation of huge complexity, commerciality and expertise. The BHF’s work is

world-class, and the impact of its work is fundamental to the health of the nation.
