Recuerdos• Has two pianist playing
simultaneously to three musical pieces (Chôro, Paseo and Valse Venezolano).
• All three pieces shows the combination of different musical styles, predominately Latin and American.
• The combination is supposed to invoke emotion in the listener.
• Shows an intertwining of two things becoming one, or working harmoniously.
Paseo• means walking in Spanish• It is the second piece in William Bolcom’s
Recuerdos (Reminiscences/ Memories) • Explores the union of Latin and American music's
of the 19th century by evoking the style of the first hugely successful American piano virtuoso/composer, New Orleans-born Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869).
• Gottschalk’s Creole (French/African) roots have a distinctly Latin flavor.
Focus
• All poems must have a reaction or reference to “Recuerdos” and/or your memories of music.
• You must include words regarding components of music. For example: songs, beat, tunes, rhythm, percussion, sounds, minor, major, acoustic, harmony, rap, rock, soul, Jazz, hip-hop, playlist, lyric, melody, hymn, vocal, anthem, etc.
Starter Activity • After listening to Paseo from William Bolcom’s
Recuerdos (memories) create a poem that evokes the emotions and feelings from the past that come to mind.
