Mission’s Multi-family On-site Recycling Collection Program Changes April 3, 2017 On April 3, 2017, Mission will join the provincial government’s stewardship program for packaging and printed paper, administered by Recycle BC (formerly known as Multi-Material BC). Under the program, Recycle BC collects funds from producers and offers financial compensation for municipal curbside collection programs that meet Recycle BC requirements. Resulting savings to the District will be passed on to taxpayers in the form of reduced recycling utility fees, starting in 2018. The Recycle BC program is also expected to result in more material being recycled overall, helping the District to achieve its diversion goals. Highlights: You can place additional materials in mixed recycling containers, including: o frozen juice containers o household aerosol cans o ice cream cartons o paper bags with plastic liners. Glass is no longer allowed in mixed recycling containers but will be collected in a separate glass collection bin. Film plastics (grocery bags and bread bags) are no longer allowed in mixed recycling bins but can be dropped off at the Mission Recycling Depot and Mission Bottle Depot. What Should You Do? Please carefully read the attached information, so you are familiar with the changes to the recycling program starting April 3, 2017. After this date, recycling materials in collection bins that do not meet the new specifications may result in the collection bin not being collected.
