Recycling of mass material in Germany

Page 10: Recycling Technologies BAYERN

➲ Requirement for further processing or recovery of the materials, also from an economic point of view.

➲ However, the increasing complexity of input flows acts contrary to this. These input flows require highly-effective technologies and intelligently combined procedures.

o High demand for increasingly scarce resources

o Concurrently rising prices

12April 19, 2023

o There is no standard in recycling processes.

o Processes can be designed variously, aggregates can be combined individually.

o Both depending on the form of material and the requested preparation.

o Disassembly of components

April 19, 2023

Processes and technologies

• The input material is crushed by using a combination of impact and shear forces.

• All materials are selectivly reduces in size and composite materials are disintegrated to a large extent

• The separation is achieved without destruction of the components

Size-reduction, disaggregation and shredding

• The material is sized by the hooks of the knives, pulled in and cut between the knives of the two opposed shafts.

• The two strong cutting rotors master all materials, even if difficult to shred or large and voluminous.

Page 20: Recycling Technologies BAYERN

20April 19, 2023

Processes and technologies

o Selective size reduction and compaction

• Intensive impact and shear effect is achieved between the horseshoe-shaped impellers and the anvil ring.

• All composite materials are highly disintegrated and in addition a selective size reduction takes place:

- Brittle-hard materials are greatly reduced in size

- Metals are shaped to small balls - Elastic materials are torn into

smaller pieces

Size-reduction, disaggregation and shredding

• Rotor and stator are equipped with high quality solid knives.

• The material is cleanly sheared off between rotor and stator – a defined granulate is formed by the perforated sieves mounted below the rotor

• A precondition for optimal performances and best separation of materials.

Processes and technologies

o Screening

Separation and classification

• The machine uses its variable sieve formats to sort bulk materials into various particle sizes.

• The screening box is made to oscillate diagonally using excenters by a drive system.

Separation and classification

• Identification of the type of impurity and its position in the material flow

• Use of high-frequency detector coils and line-scan cameras, laser technology, X-ray scanners or close-range infra-red spectral analysis.

• Contaminants are separated and sorted using various rapid-reacting mechanical or pneumatic devices; reject flaps, pneumatic pushers, extraction systems or air blast units.

Processes and technologies

o Sifting

Martens Hans, Recyclingtechnik, Spektrum Akademischer Verlag, Heidelberg 2011

Separation and classification

• The machine sorts various bulk materials according to their specific gravity, their shape and size.

• The sorting product is fed into the zigzag channel and distributed through the entire cross-section of the sorting channel.

• The sorting air generated by the fan flows through the sorter from the bottom to the top; this causes the material to be flooded by air and separated.

Page 25: Recycling Technologies BAYERN

25April 19, 2023

Processes and technologies

o Electrostatic separation

Martens Hans, Recyclingtechnik, Spektrum Akademischer Verlag, Heidelberg 2011

Separation and classification

• The material is separated into a conductive and a non-conductive fraction

• Conductive materials (metals) give up their charge very quickly to the drum and are ejected by the rotating movement.

• The non-conductive materials however loose their charge very slowly, remain adhered to the surface of the metal drum and are finally brushed off.

Processes and technologies

o Mixing, drying, sterilization, vaporization

Conditioning and processing

• The machines work turbulently, i.e. in a mechanically produced fluidized bed or alternatively in an aggregate

• The process is superbly suited for gentle product homogenization, for the preparation of solid mixtures, solid-liquid mixtures and pastes.

Page 27: Recycling Technologies BAYERN

27April 19, 2023

Processes and technologies

o Treatment of organic waste

Conditioning and processing

• Production of biogas that is used to generate electricity and heat.

• The digestate that remains in the digesters can be used as liquid fertilizer.

• Alternatively, it can undergo a solid-liquid separation, whereas the solids are a marketable compost after composting.

Processes and technologies

o Briquetting

Conditioning and processing

• Making briquettes from production residues creates valuable products for the generation of heat and secondary raw materials

• Recovery of operating media• Reduced costs on handling and

transport
