Welcome...The fact that competitiveness is an instinctive trait of every entrepreneur was already
established decades ago by John Kenneth Galbraith, one of the most influential econo-
mists of the 20th century. We make the same observation every year, when we call for
entries to the “red dot award: product design”. Last year alone, more than 1,600 compa-
nies from around the world entered more than 4,200 products to the red dot design
award in order to, for once, not only compete against their competitors in the market,
but also in the special discipline of “design”. Here they can demonstrate their design
strength, i.e. the potential they have to distinguish themselves from other companies
and their products. Receiving an accolade in the red dot design award makes this design
quality visible and allows it to be communicated. It is a measurement of the extent to
which a company can distinguish itself and its products from its competition.
Now the “red dot award: product design” is entering a new round. In the 18 categories
the competition now consists of, the jury made up of international design experts asses-
ses the submitted products in direct comparison on site and awards a prize to the best
design achievements. Take advantage of this opportunity, prove your entrepreneurial
spirit, and face the worldwide competition.
I look forward to your entry and wish you great success!
Professor Dr. Peter Zec
Initiator of the red dot design award
Today, the red dot design award, the origins of which
date back to 1955, is one of the biggest and most re-
nowned design competitions in the world. In 2010,
the competition received almost 14,000 entries from 68
nations in its three disciplines “red dot award: product
design”, “red dot award: communication design” and “red
dot award: design concept”. The studies by the red dot
institute for advanced design studies, which were recent-
ly published in the book “Design Value – A Strategy for
Business Success”, impressively show that design creates
value in the long term and that it pays to invest in
design.
Receiving a red dot, the internationally recognised seal
for excellent design quality, shows that you belong to the
international design elite and offers you numerous pos-
sibilities of communicating your success, ranging from
the red dot design museums and the red dot online ex-
hibition to the red dot design yearbook and the red dot
on tour touring exhibitions – the winners of the red dot
design award have access to the complete “red dot
world”.
Welcome to the red dot world of design!
red dot: best of the best The “red dot: best of the best” is awarded for pioneering
design and the highest award in the “red dot award:
product design”. Only the best products in a category
receive this prize.
red dotThe red dot is the award for high design quality. Only
products that clearly stand out from comparable prod-
ucts due to their outstanding design receive the
soughtafter quality seal from the international jury.
honourable mentionIn order to highlight outstanding detail solutions of a
product the red dot expert jury awards honourable
mentions. Such a mention praises particularly successful
aspects of a product and is to encourage winners to con-
tinue on their successful design path in the future.
red dot: design team of the yearReceiving the title “red dot: design team of the year” is a
very special accolade: Since 1988, red dot has annually
selected a design team which with its continually inno-
vative design work has made its mark on international
markets. The list of winners of recent years reads like a
who’s who of international design, among the winners
are renowned names such as Apple, Nokia, Pininfarina,
adidas, LG Electronics, BMW, Bose, Tupperware – and the
most recent winner, Hilti.

This year an additional differentiation of the product
categories has created further concentration of exper-
tise. With the new category “Architecture and Urban
Design” products are now assessed in 18 different cate-
gories, representing the complete bandwidth of product
design. For each individual product category interna-
tionally recognised design experts are chosen to assess
the entries.
Thus the adjudication results in each category reflect
the future of the respective industry in terms of design
and serve as orientation for manufacturers and designers
worldwide.

Fair and independent – the red dot jury
The jury is the heart of the red dot design award, be-
cause the quality of a competition not only depends on
the rules of its adjudication, but also on the consistency
with which these rules are applied. Therefore, red dot
invests a lot of time and care in the composition of
the red dot jury. Besides high-class expertise, our jury
members also guarantee absolute independence – a
factor that plays a very special role in the red dot design
award.
Thus, only self-employed and independent designers
can be appointed to the jury. This avoids conflicts of
interest. Every year design luminaries from all over the
world come together to test and assess the submitted
products according to strict rules. Furthermore, it is
obviously not permitted for members of the red dot jury
to assess their own products.

The 30 jurors of the “red dot award: product design 2010” were:
A logistical masterstroke – the adjudication on site
The consistency and care with which the red dot jury is
chosen is also reflected in the adjudication process. In
the red dot design award there are – in contrast to other
design competitions – no pre-selections using images,
because the same conditions should apply to all entries.
Therefore, all registered products are adjudicated on site
– a logistical masterstroke. Selecting excellent design
on site in a competition that has meanwhile grown to
comprise a total of 18 categories is a responsible task,
for which the members of the jury spare neither trouble
nor expense. All products are thoroughly examined,
tested and judged against criteria such as degree of
innovation, functionality, self-explanatory quality or
ecological soundness by the jury teams.

Design on stage...
Glamorous highlight – the red dot galaThe climax of the competition is the red dot gala in the
Essen Aalto-Theater, an architectural masterpiece and
thus an appropriate setting for the festive awards pre-
sentation. In recent years, annually more than 1,200
guests came to the red dot gala from all continents:
international design stars and design experts, politi-
cians, business experts and international media repre-
sentatives came together to celebrate the award-win-
ners of the “red dot award: product design”. During the
awards presentation all winners of the “red dot: best of
the best” are asked to come up onto the stage individu-
ally to receive their red dot trophy. One of the highlights
of the evening is the honouring of the “red dot: design
team of the year” with a festive laudatory speech and
the presentation of the “Radius” challenge cup. A sup-
porting cultural programme of the highest calibre is
guaranteed by the performance of the Aalto Ballett
Theater Essen among others.

The red dot design museum in GermanyThe red dot design museum is located in the former boil-
er house of the Zeche Zollverein colliery, which was
redesigned by star architect Lord Norman Foster. It is
one of the most impressive industrial buildings from the
first half of the 20th century and with more than 1,500
exhibits on an area of more than 4,000 square metres it
is home to the largest exhibition of contemporary design
in the world. For at least one year all products that have
won a red dot are exhibited here in the breathtaking set-
ting of the former colliery, which has been part of the
UNESCO World Cultural Heritage since 2001. The red dot
design museum annually attracts more than 140,000
design and architecture lovers and is also a sought-after
location for company and press events.
A four-week special exhibition marks the beginning of
the exhibition at the red dot design museum. The vernis-
sage takes place on the night of the awards ceremony
with guests from around the world at the by now leg-
endary Designers’ Night. Winners who enjoy immersing
themselves in the world of culinary delights attend the
exclusive Winners’ Dinner by star chef Frank Rosin.

red dot traffic, an impressive colonial style building which
– painted in bright red – is today regarded as Singapore’s
creative centre. Apart from the red dot design museum,
the red dot traffic houses creative companies such as
advertising agencies and design studios. With its extraor-
dinary architecture it is, moreover, one of the most fasci-
nating event venues of Singapore: Design conferences,
design events and the spectacular parties of the creative
scene regularly take place here.
The red dot design museum in Singapore offers winners of
the “red dot award: product design” the unique opportu-
nity to present their award-winning products to the Asian
public at the Asian hub, in the heart of the booming city
state of Singapore.

Communicating successes ...
red dot labelReceiving a red dot for your product should always just
mark the beginning of a series of PR and marketing
activities. The red dot activities are further enhanced by
the manifold media and advertising activities of the
award-winners, who are using the red dot prominently as
a quality seal – a right reserved exclusively for competi-
tion winners. The use of the internationally well-known
label generates, due to its eye-catching quality alone,
the highest possible awareness for each product carrying
it. Furthermore, red dot is encountered more and more
frequently in high-quality advertising campaigns, prod-
uct brochures, and catalogues. The red dot label con-
tributes to immensely increasing the recognition of a
product and ensures that a brand will be associated with
good design in future.

A travelling seashell It is an expression of personal style, and as a way of transporting individual items, it has a manifold symbolic significance – the choice of a piece of luggage and what is being stored in it tells a lot about its user. Perhaps that is the reason why luggage also plays an equally central role in film and literature. For instance the suitcase in the famous movie “Pulp Fiction” by director Quentin Tarantino, who never lets the viewer know what is inside an important suitcase. The design of the Cosmolite collection communicates a new form of aesthetics for luggage,

challenging beholders and their imagination with its unusual language of form. This luggage collection features a design of eye-catching ridges that run along the sides and taper towards the bottom, giving the body of the luggage the appearance of a glimmering seashell. Inspired by nature itself, the shell form has a homogeneous and highly organic appearance, and is part of a sophisticated and well-balanced design concept that is achieved through innovative Curv® technology. This technique of woven layering made from Curv®, is one of the most durable materials available today. This
material is used as the basis for the shell-like form of this collection to achieve Samsonite’s lightest and strongest luggage collection ever. Due to the robust material and its functional design, the luggage collection can withstand both heavy travel usage and the stress and strain encountered at airports and train stations. With its innovative symbiosis of material and form, the luggage conveys an individual sense of style and at the same time protects the belongings of its user from impact and damage – a seashell serving as a symbol for the lasting durability of both form and material.

Was haben dieNutzer davon?
Dazu gehen Wissenschaftund Technologie Hand in Hand.
rung.
