PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Greetings,
As Fall events start to wind down, we would like to thank the families who
helped support Homecoming and other Fall Activities.
Student Organizations and Activities
I encourage all parents to talk with their students about getting involved with
an after-school activity. Winter sports will soon be organizing and a number
of after school clubs are setting their meeting times as well. One of our goals
this year is to have 100% of our students engaged with an extracurricular
activity. Consequently, we are making efforts to try to create a variety of
opportunities for all students. If you have questions, please contact our
Activities Office at 608-868-9565.
Reminder to Charge Laptops
Just a general reminder to please ask your students to come to school with
their laptop fully charged. Please help them to get into the habit of charging
it each night as a full charge generally will last for the full school day. Thank
you!
Parent Teacher Conferences
Conferences are Wednesday October 16th and Wednesday, October 23 from
4:00 - 8:00 pm. Conferences will be held in the teacher's classrooms again
this year as this allows for more privacy during the conference. Parents do
not need to make appointments.
Update on Building Design
Over the course of the last month, the building design team has worked on
the final layout of the new Physical Education/ Athletic additions to our
current Gym 2 and placement of the pool, as well as the layout of the STEM
wing footprint and conversion of the current Tech Ed wing into an expanded
Performing Arts Wing of the school. The Board of Education
will be approving the site design in November. Very exciting
times!

FRENCH NEWS FRANCE TRIP 2020
MHS French students are planning a trip to France this June. To be eligible, students must
currently be enrolled in French 2 or higher. The deadline for signing up is October 15.
Contact Ms. Bratz ([email protected]) with questions or to obtain sign-up information.
The next MHS France trip will be in June of 2022.
GLOBAL EDUCATION ACHIEVEMENT CERTIFICATE
Students interested in travel, international careers, languages, and cultures should check out
the Global Education Achievement Certificate (GEAC) program. This rigorous yet attainable 4
-year program enables students to leave high school with accolades that prove to colleges
and employers that they have the necessary global competence to succeed in today's world.
Students who complete the program earn a seal on their diploma, a special certificate from
DPI, and the designation of "Global Scholar" on their high school transcript. Global compe-
tence is fast becoming a basic expectation of employers in all sectors and many careers.

AP Testing Registration for 2019-20 School Year
Students enrolled in Advanced Placement classes are given the opportunity to take AP exams
in May. While the main advantage of taking an AP course is better preparation for college,
students who take and perform well on the AP exam may receive college credit while in high
school which can save both time and money.
Scores are reported to the college designated by the student and range from 1 (no
recommendation) to 5 (extremely qualified). Each college determines the scores to be
accepted for credit, but all UW System institutions grant credit for scores of 3 and above.

The timeline to register for the AP Exams has changed significantly this year as the
CollegeBoard is requiring a Fall Registration. The CollegeBoard reports that more students
succeed on their AP exams when they commit to taking the AP Exam early in the school year.
The new AP system includes access to an online account where students will get personalized
feedback through digital tools that provide daily support for every AP classroom. Teachers
are able to track student performance throughout the year using an online bank of real AP
practice questions and monthly personal progress checks.
Students who would like to take an AP exam must complete two steps:
1) Login to their CollegeBoard account and indicate YES for each exam they plan to take
this year. Final decisions must be indicated online by October 31, 2019.
2) Submit payment in the MHS Counseling Office by November 1, 2019.
a. Total cost for each test is $94
b. Non-refundable deposit of $40/test is acceptable (if students pay $40 deposit,
they must pay the remaining $54/test before May)
Please make checks payable to Milton High School. Any student receiving Free and Reduced
lunch is encouraged to speak with Ms. Wineke in the Counseling Office about a fee reduction.
Parent/Guardians and students are encouraged to speak with Ms. Wineke in the Counseling
Office during Parent/Teacher Conferences on 10/16 and 10/23 with any questions or to
submit AP exam registration.

The Milton Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC) has organized the donation
of free haircuts for kids through salons that are members of MACC. The area
salons that are donating 50 free child haircuts include:

Our first National Letter of Intent / Celebratory Signing date is Wednesday, November 13
at 3:15pm in the Milton High School LMC.
If your student is planning on participating in this event, please call the Activities Office
at 608-868-9565.
Any Class of 2020 student graduating at semester and entering the military, apprentice-
ship or other training program can be included in the Signing Event. Contact Ms. Kenyon
if interested.
¡Vamos a Perú!
The Spanish department is planning a trip to Peru in June of 2021! Highlights will include
traveling through the Amazon, seeing the Andes mountains, visiting majestic Machu Picchu,
taking a Peruvian cooking class, visits to Lima and Cuzco, using the Spanish language in daily
interactions, and more!
This trip is open to students that are taking a Spanish course here at MHS currently or who will
be next year. If you would like more information, please plan to attend an informational
meeting on either Wednesday, Oct. 9th or Thursday, Oct. 10 from 6:30 -7:15 in room 146. Both

library. For those students who have signed up, please bring a #2 wood pencil and a calculator.

UPCOMING CLASS MEETINGS
JUNIOR Planning Conference
We are strongly encouraging ALL Junior students and their parents to attend a College and Post
High School planning presentation on either October 16th or 23rd. Presentations will be held from
6:30-7:15 pm in the auditorium. Each student will receive their current transcript and a packet of in-
formation for future planning!
SENIOR Financial Aid Meeting
A representative from UW-Whitewater will be presenting information and answering questions on
the financial aid process. The meeting will be held on October 23 from 6:30-7:15 pm (during parent
teacher conferences) in the auditorium.
Are you considering a career in health care? Mercyhealth Medical School for Teens will be Monday
nights, October 14-Dec 9, in Janesville and the cost is only $30. These classes fill up fast so register
ASAP. Topics covered include: neurology, pulmonology, emergency medicine, musculoskeletal,
gastroenterology, cardiology and introduction to medicine. Dec 9 you will scrub in for a surgery at
the hospital/trauma center! To register, call 608-756-6100. For more information, contact Ms.

SENIOR PORTRAITS Dear Member of the Class of 2020:
Re: Senior portrait specifications
It is important that all seniors—regardless of the photographer they choose—follow the guidelines given below.
Photos that do not conform to these specifications will be returned. Your photographer will be taking a wide varie-
ty of poses. Be sure you select the correct picture to submit for the yearbook. (See sample pictures below.)
Head size on a wallet-sized digital image sent to Talon must measure 1-1/2 inches vertically, 7/8 of an inch from
chin to eyebrow. Please have your photographer send a digital image to Ms. Brechtl at
[email protected] or mail a CD with your jpeg image to Sarah Brechtl at the address above.
Backgrounds must be light and solid, not mottled or dark. Backgrounds should be plain—no flowers,
blinds, scenery, animals, tie-dye, frosted class, etc.
Girls should wear dark, solid colored tops. Boys should wear a jacket and tie (preferred) or a solid–colored shirt/
sweater. Tank tops are not acceptable.
Pose selected must be a full-face, head and shoulders shot only. You should be looking at the cam-
era: no tilts, profiles, over-the-shoulder poses, arms or hands.
We will not accept glamour-type photos using blurred filters, exotic make-up, seductive poses, etc.
Photos which do not meet these specifications will be returned, thus your picture may not be in the yearbook.
We must have them no later than November 1, 2019. We cannot guarantee that any photo received after
Nov. 1 will be in alphabetical order or even in the yearbook at all.
We prefer photos to be in digital format and sent to us via email or on a CD in jpeg form. If you plan to use a Life
Touch photo taken from your school photo identification card, please notify Ms. Brechtl.
The yearbook staff will schedule a day after Nov. 1 to take photos of any students who were unable to have a pro-
fessional photograph taken. Please notify Ms. Brechtl if you would like to have the yearbook staff take your pho-
tograph.

Homecoming Food Drive
Thank you to everyone in the community that supported the Homecoming Food Drive sponsored
by the Interact Club. The Milton Food Pantry appreciated the donations.
Interact Club will also be partnering with the Milton Food Pantry for the Teen Gift Drive to pro-

MANUFACTURING DAY
Several students participated in a Manufacturing Day field trip. First stop was Scot Forge in Clinton
where students were amazed by the manufacturing processes. Second stop was to Novares (formerly
known as Miniature Precision Components) where students were in awe of the many automated
components to their facility. Last stop was at Blackhawk Technical College-Milton Manufacturing Center
to tour the college and learn more about their programming. Thank you to Blackhawk Technical
College for organizing Manufacturing Day and to Scot Forge and Novares for allowing our students to
learn more about their businesses.

BUSINESS & COMPUTER EDUCATION DEPT.
The Business & Computer Department would like to highlight two classes, to provide students and fami-
lies with more information regarding the opportunities available. This month, we are highlighting the
two classes available to all students, no prerequisites required. Introduction to Business & Marketing is
a foundational class that covers a little bit of everything in our department. This semester course intro-
duces students to basic business and marketing concepts through many hands-on, real world applica-
tion projects. Being mainly project-based, students are able to immediately apply concepts learned in
class to a project or scenario. This class is required before most other business courses can be taken.
The semester is highlighted by two main projects: Invention Project and Cereal Branding Project. Both
summarize and apply the concepts learned throughout the course. This is a great way to find out if Busi-
ness and/or Marketing might be something you are interested in!
Another great class for any student is the Computers for the Workplace course. Although students have
their own Macbooks, many are not always taught the proper and most efficient ways to use their tech-
nology. And although many workplaces do use Apple products, most workplace settings still use Win-
dows and Windows applications. In this course, students will learn a new operating system through the
use of the PC lab which runs on the Windows 10 operating system. Students will learn the basics of nav-
igating a PC, file maintenance, and just tips and tricks for using a desktop computer. A majority of the
semester is spent learning the “ins and outs” of Microsoft Office 2016. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are
all covered in this class. The most exciting part is that all students will have the opportunity to attempt
the industry-recognized, international certification process for Microsoft Office. If students are able to
earn a passing score on the production-based exam, they will earn the distinction of Microsoft Office
Specialist for that program. This exam is typically taken off-site and costs over $80.00/attempt. We are
able to take the exam right in class and at no cost! If the certification is earned, it will be noted on stu-
dents' transcripts as well as entered into a national database.
These are just two of the great classes we offer in our department. If you have any questions at all about
these or other business/computer courses, please do not hesitate to contact any of us!

FBLA (FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA)
FBLA is the largest national organization for business and leadership with over 200,000 mem-
bers. This year, the Milton FBLA chapter has a few exciting things planned! First, we kick off our
year with a stadium tour of Miller Park in Milwaukee in November. We will receive a private
tour of the facility, learn the “business” of the Brewers, and receive a private presentation from
a Marketing Department employee. The cost of this amazing opportunity is just $20.00 (plus
payment of membership dues, $25.00). Space is limited and the deadline is quickly approach-
ing! Permission slips and all money must be submitted by Tuesday, October 8th at 3:00 p.m.
Don’t miss out!
A major component of FBLA is choosing a competitive event to participate in, with the hopes of
making it to the ultimate level - Nationals! Last year, we had one team place 6th at Nationals
which is the highest placing we have ever received! Each member earned a trophy and a cash
prize. With over 65 events to choose from, there is something for everyone! If you may be inter-
ested in joining, make sure you talk to an officer or contact Miss Avery for more information.
The deadline to join in Friday, November 1st. Don’t miss out on joining the best business and
