share in an experience for which there can be asmany interpretations as there are souls in the seats.

It’s in that magic-time moment when anythingseems possible; when the prospect of being transported from your surroundings (and beingcompletely dazzled by the journey) is at itsstrongest. You know that moment? It’s like thatin the Red Bank area all the time—perhapsnever more so than the season of holiday traditions and New Year resolutions.

You needn’t be among the generations of local families who have looked to Red Bank as the area’s “Holiday Capital” to feel a certain excitement in the air. The Count Basie Theatre—a place that presents an enticing picture window into the sights and sounds of the season of lights—is under the newmanagement team of COO Justine Robertson and incoming CEO Adam Philipson. The venerable venuewill ring out 2012 by reinforcing a commitment to some long-playing community favorites—while looking ahead to 2013 with an eye toward making some new friends.

That happy mix of the old and the new hits home in earnest with the annual holiday concert by the Monmouth Civic Chorus (December 2, 2012)—a performance of THE MESSIAH AND MORE that represents the debut of the acclaimed and award-winning organization’s new Artistic Director, Dr. Ryan Brandau. The good doctor leads the assembled voices of the MCC in the Christmas portion of Handel’s beloved oratorio (without a doubt, one of those seasonal signifiers that define the Yuletide season in Red Bank), as well as in Vivaldi’s lively Gloria and other holiday favorites arranged by the conductor.

A more recently minted Red Bank tradition—this one traveling all the way from the Midwest—blasts away the humbugs on December 15, when Nebraska Theatre Caravan returns with a large-cast, full-orchestra, high-tech staging of the Dickens classic, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, that draws its crowd-pleasing power from a score of traditional seasonal hymns and chestnuts.

Another Red Bank tradition returns shortly thereafter, when the borough-based Company of Dance Arts brings its cherished production of Tchaikovsky’s ballet THE NUTCRACKER (December 8-9, 2012) to life, with a cast that mixes professional NYC dancers with the budding ballerinas of CODA. It’s a family favorite that can certainly serve to whet the appetite for the first of two appearances by the State Ballet Theatre of Russia, when the touring dancers of the world-famous Voronezh Academy present aTCHAIKOVSKY SPECTACULAR (December 21, 2012) that offers up a fantasia of Sleeping Beauties, elegant Swans and, yes,Nutcrackers. The SBTR troupe returns to the Basie boards with Prokofiev’s ROMEO AND JULIET (February 17, 2013), in a production choreographed by Michael Lavrovsky.

The accent on dance extends well into the new year, when the Count welcomes back a genuine prince of Broadway. In his new touring showcase, tap dance top-dog SAVION GLOVER (January 11, 2013) pays homage to the great tap artists of the past century with SoLe SANCTUARY: A Hoofer’s Meditation on the Art of Tap.

Meanwhile over at Two River Theater, Artistic Director John Dias and his team from the borough’s newest performing arts center markthe transition from 2012 to 2013 by celebrating a pair of classic storytellers, in a way that’s simultaneously fresh and new. For theannual Two River Theater Company family show, the beloved animal characters of Kenneth Grahame return to the spotlight in A WIND IN THE WILLOWS CHRISTMAS (December 8-30, 2012), an original piece that musicalizes and Americanizes Mr. Toad and friends with a score of new songs by the team of Sarah Schlesinger and (ex NFL tackle turned Grammy winning Nashville songster) Mike Reid.

Followers of TRTC know the Reid-Schlesinger partnership as the creative force behind the premiere of In This House from last season—the same slate that offered up the area stage debut of Tony nominated (and Obie winning) Michael Cumpsty. The Shakespearean star of stage and screen (who makes his home in nearby Middletown) makes his Red Bank return with a classicfrom a Bard of a different era—Noel Coward, whose “valentine to the theater” PRESENT LAUGHTER (February 16-March 10,2013) promises to be a perfect fit for the Broadway veteran’s stellar skills.

Just a short country ramble from downtown Red Bank—past Many Mind Creek, the Old Stone Church and some of the most history-infused scenery in the Two Rivers area—the longest-running stage troupe in Monmouth County rolls on into a truly amazing 60th seasonof live community theater—a slate of entertainments that, like the company’s longtime headquarters, harbors more than a few surprises.

Beyond the back wall of one of the area’s oldest (and tiniest) libraries, the Navesink Library Theatre opens up into a comfortably scaledauditorium that boasts a raised proscenium stage, a fully up to date tech booth, and a famous spread of home-baked desserts that have helped make the Monmouth Players one of the “worst kept secrets” on the Garden State’s nonprofessional stagescape.

Under producers Lori and Paul Renick, the respected Players brand has been subject to an intriguing degree of exploration and expansion—the result being shows like WIT (November 30-December 16, 2012), Margaret Edson’s Pultizer Prize winning drama ofa college professor in the final stages of terminal illness. A complex tapestry of life, death, memory and brief nudity, it’s presentedunder the “Not Necessarily the Players” banner as part of an ongoing commitment to new and different works. The Players return inearnest with ALMOST, MAINE (February 2-23, 2013), a “midwinter night’s dream” by John Cariani that enchants an ensemble castof lovers and neighbors beneath the northern lights.

Originated several years ago by agroup of Red Bank art enthusiasts, theArt Walk was reintroduced, after a four-year hiatus, in May 2012 andheld again in August. The event received its new lift-off thanks, in largemeasure, to the efforts of Robert Langdon, a professional photographerand the gallery manager/curator of Gallery U, located at 80 BroadStreet and part of Universal InstituteMedical Rehab Therapy Center,which serves individuals with traumatic brain injuries.

The art scene in Red Bank has been described as everything fromvibrant and eclectic to funky and fantastic. A 2004 article in The New York Times went so far as to say that the borough “hasfashioned itself into a mini-center for the arts.” But what many people may not know is that art—original fine art, especially—can be found, not just in galleries, but all over town: in restaurants,cafés, churches, and other non-traditional locations.

What better way to enjoy, appreciate, and, perhaps, purchase these oftentimes local creations than by taking a leisurely walking tour along a prepared route throughout Red Bank with stops at a variety of art spaces?That’s what The Red Bank Art Walk is all about.

“Red Bank has been a strong artist community for decades, and we really think that having the Art Walk is a great way tobring the focus back to that,” says Robert, who heads the newly formed Red Bank Art Walk Committee. The group has representatives from Amy Manor Interior Design, The Art Alliance of Monmouth County, Frame to Please, Gallery 135 atRed Bank Community Church, Gallery U, Red Bank River Center, and Studio 25. According to participants, the summer Art Walk in August drew hundreds of people who visited dozens of art spaces all over town. Megan Prenderville, a committee member who runs Frame to Please in The Galleria on Bridge Avenue, was thrilled by the turnout.

The theme of the November walk is A Gift of Art Is a Gift from the Heart, which is fitting, explains Robert Langdon, since November 24—the Saturday after Black Friday—is National Small Business Day. In support of National Small Business Day, America Express will be offering a $25 statement credit per card for shopping at any small business(card members can register their Amex cards in early November).

“We will use the Art Walk to bring attention to the many unique smallbusinesses in Red Bank that exhibit original art...and their owners, whoare working hard to showcase quality art that is affordable as the perfect holiday gift.” More than twenty venues are on the self-guidedtour of art spaces that include traditional galleries such as the Art Alliance of Monmouth County, Frame to Please, Studio 25, and GalleryU, and nontraditional spaces—art-friendly restaurants and cafes suchas Front Street Trattoria and Jamian’s Food and Drink; interior designspaces including Amy Manor Interior Design; places of worship such asGallery 135 at Red Bank Community Church, an exhibit space curated by artist and associate pastor Gerda Liebmann; and beauty salons including Glen Goldbaum Salon (Lambs and Wolves). Painting,sculpture, photography, glasswork—are all on exhibit in a town lit upwith holiday festivities and decorations.

Going forward, Robert and fellow committee members—with supportfrom Red Bank RiverCenter, the borough’s downtown management alliance—would like to see the Art Walk held four times each year. “The event is such a wonderful opportunity for everyone, whether from the area or from out of town to come into a quaint little art community and really discover what Red Bank has to offer—and there’sa lot,” says Robert.

THE SONGS OF GOSPELJesse Moorer and The Anointed Sons of JerseyBehind the closed doors of the Pilgrim Baptist Church Sunday morning worship service, there’sa joyful noise going on. If you have a heartbeat, before you know it, you’re up on your feet.That’s the power of gospel music—a staple in the tradition of the black church. And one moretruth: it makes you happy, even at times when you want to cry.

Jesse Moorer Jr., has been bringing a lot of joy and happiness to the 116 year-old church at172 Shrewsbury Avenue in Red Bank, as its Minister of Music since 1996. “Gospel music gaveme a platform to witness to people about what it means to be a Christian,” said Moorer, “andto inspire them in a way that would draw them closer to God.”

The deep tradition of the music heralds such icons as Mahalia Jackson, Cissy Houston, James Cleveland and contemporaries like BeBe and CeCe Winans and Mary Mary, all of whom moved the riveting sound from the blackchurch to the main stage. Moorer, who is no stranger to the performance stage, also sings and formed The AllianceSingers with Antonio Lawrence, Corinda Carford, Michelle Moore, AntoinetteMoore and Tiffany Andrews. The group sang backup on Bruce Springsteen’salbum, The Rising, which was in tribute to 9/11.

THE GOSPEL IN SONGMonmouth Civic Chorus For many music lovers, the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah sung by theMonmouth Civic Chorus is the highlight of the season, and will be, again, thisyear at the annual holiday concert at the Count Basie Theatre on Sunday, De-cember 2 when Dr. Ryan Brandau makes his debut as the new artistic director and conductor. The Chorus, started in 1949, has grown from a smallgroup of singers to an award-winning chorus of more than eighty voices.

The concert, Messiah and More, features Handel’s oratorio along with Vivaldi’s Gloria and Dr. Brandau’s ownarrangements of holiday favorites. A quartet of guests soloists include soprano Jo Ellen Miller, mezzo-soprano KateMaroney, tenor Steven Caldicott Wilson, and baritone John Maynard.

MCC has performed on tour in eleven European countries, and at numerous performance venues in the Northeast,including Carnegie Hall in Manhattan; the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D. C andthe New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. The Chorus, a non-sectarian, non-profit, independent community group, has with a paid musical staff, but, otherwise, depends totally on dedicated volunteers, who either

“I got a call one day from Corinda who said, ‘Jesse, I need you to get on the next ferry to New York. Jon Stewart wants us on his show.’” The Alliance Singers performed on The Daily Show, appearing as atraditional gospel choir as Jon Stewart impersonated a preacher.

“The music is my life,” said Moorer, who is also one of the founding members, along with Antonio andStacy Lawrence, of The Anointed Sons of Jersey (TASOJ). Today, the award-winning group, together since1983, is comprised of Daniel Grant, Shannon Stokes, Jeremy Jennings, Angelo Perrozzi, Bill Jones andMicah Savage. They recently travelled to Atlanta, Georgia, to receive the “Associate Gospel Promoterand Management Artist of the Year Award.”

TASOJ has two CD’s, God Will Never Change and ChristianRace. “When it comes to gospel music,“ said Moorer, “I’mdoing God’s will.”

“Over the years the organization has grown in numbers andmusic quality,“ says Susan Metz, a member of the Chorus and the group’s volunteer marketing manager. “Our musical horizons have always expanded through the leadership of our musical directors.” Dr. Brandau, who received his B.A. in music,magna cum laude, from Princeton University, holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the Yale School

of Music, and an MPhil in historical musicology from the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom). Accordingto Metz, an important criterion in his selection was his interest in new music and creative programming.

The Chorus returns to the Count Basie Theatre with I Have a Dream on Saturday, March 16, 2013—a concert that honors the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King iconic speech, and the 150th anniversaryof the Emancipation Proclamation. The music will range from African-American spirituals and Civil War songsto more contemporary pieces like a choral arrangement of U2’s moving tribute, MLK.

Since it was composed in 1741, Handel’s Messiah has become one of the best known and frequently performedchoral works in Western music. “But it’s music that never gets old,” explains Susan Metz. “We know the notes,but music is not about the notes. It’s about the expression and the feelings. And our director is leading us to finda new approach, to hear the music with fresh ears.”

Nearly 8,500 surgical procedures are performed annually at Riverview MedicalCenter. Over the past three years, Riverview’s surgical volume has grown by morethan 20% and has created a need to improve and enhance our current operations,” says John Rose, M.D., chairman of surgery at Riverview MedicalCenter. As more patients continue to realize the quality of care and convenience

of Riverview for their surgical needs, Riverview recognized the importance of adding more operating room capacity for surgeons, team members, and the most advanced surgical equipment.

As a result, last spring Riverview announced the creation of a 22,000 square foot center for surgical excellence to be constructed in the Blaisdell Pavilion, on the Medical Center campus. Riverview is pleased to announce that the second to last phaseof this expansion, two new operating suites, are open and caring for the community. Thisopening marks the completion of the most significant surgical project in the Center’s history. These two new operating suites enable patients to continue to receive advanced surgical procedures close to home, instead of traveling to New YorkCity or Philadelphia.

The hybrid OR combines conventional operating room capabilities with state-of-the-artimaging which not only provides improved, clearer pictures for the surgeon, but a wider angle view and enhanced depth of field,making the surgical procedure and instrument location more precise.

In a hybrid OR, the technology is brought to the patient, offering access to the highest level of equipment necessary in minimally invasive procedures, without ever moving the patient or delaying surgery. The range of clinical applications that benefit from use of the iCT/BrainLab technology includes: cranial, spinal, ear/nose/throat, head & neck, trauma, orthopedic, andvascular surgery. Additional benefits of this advanced technology includes the elimination of physically moving a patient awayfrom the operating suite during procedures and increased patient safety by identification of hematomas during surgery.

Story has it that the daughters of local social reformer and philanthropist Geraldine L. Thompson were riding their ponies on the outskirts of the family farm in Lincroft, when they came upon a frail six-year-old boy at the side of a dirt road. The boy begged them to follow him to his dilapidated home nearby,

where the girls found the rest of his family sicklier than he. The girls brought back their mother, who recognizedthe symptom of tuberculosis, and proceeded to care for them. The year was 1912. And the incident was

likely the genesis of what today is known as the VNA Health Group—Visiting Nurse Association Health & Hospice, headquartered in Red Bank.

From that seminal moment, Geraldine Thompson worked relentlessly, not only to eradicate the ravages of TB, but to help charter an in-house nursing service to address the health needs of the greater Middletown area.

The energetic group created well-baby clinics, took care of the homeless, and sent out nurses to care for the elderly—everything Geraldine could manage to “care for her neighbors in need.”

In this regard, not much has changed.

“Our mission continues to be to caringfor those in need,” says Kathy McKeever, VNA’s director of marketingwho has compiled much historical material and written extensively aboutthe century-old non-profit. Today, VNA is the state’s largest nonprofit community provider of home care andhospice and community-based services.

VNA is more than “visitingnurses” (there are 500-plus), but nurses do, indeed, visit. Last year,they and other professionalstaff (VNA has more than1,700 employees, as wellas volunteers) traveledmore than five millionmiles to care for patients.The stats are astounding:The VNA Health Groupcares for 120,000 through-out 13 counties represent-ing 78% of the state’s population; 4,000patients, on average, receive care athome on any given day, with over100,000 individuals and families receiving care and support annually—and this includes 10,000 individuals whobenefit regardless of their ability to pay.

While VNA is a Medicare-certified organization (in 2011 62% of revenuecame from Medicare) and accepts managed care commercial insurance,those revenue sources are never enoughto cover the full costs of what VNA provides. It’s those monies from grants,fundraising, and personal donations thatmake the critical difference.

No one knows this better than BridgetMurphy, VNA’s chief philanthropy officer. “The generosity of community,whether in the form of attending an event or including us in their state planning, allows us to continue takingcare of the most disabled, complexpatients,” she explains, noting this is

something that sets VNA apart. Otherorganizations may not offer programssuch as wound care, for example, because it’s expensive to maintain

and grants don’t cover it. At VNA, charitable dollars will.

The need for VNA has increased substantially in the wake of a Medicareruling resulting in hospitals not gettingpaid for patients who return within 30days of discharge. “With our home care,

we can provide a range of services—from nursing care through education, teaching, home rehab, andmedication management—to help keepthose who can’t care for themselves independently, from going back to thehospital,” explains Kathy.

There’s no shortage of challenges ahead, and VNA feels well poised tomeet them. The new president and CEO, Dr. Steven Landers, “is a reallypassionate man with a vision and a lotof great ideas for us going forward,”says Kathy. With more than 78 million

aging baby boomers on the horizon,there is an increasing need for new approaches to home and communitycare for patients of all ages, Dr. Landerswrote in VNA’s annual report. To which headded: “Our story is only the beginning.”

There are probably parents out there who would think such a thing as amarionette show to be hopelessly old-school. Too gently paced to compete with the hyper-stimulated sugar-rush of millennial kids’

entertainment. Too honest in its presentation; too lacking inthe wisecracking pop-cultural references that pepper the multiplex CGI blockbusters.

But the kids know. The kids always know—and as JamesRacioppi could tell you time and again, it’s the kids who standto teach the grownups a thing of three.

“They shape the performance,” says the founder of PaperMoon Puppet Theatre, in describing his loyal audience. “The

kids give you back so much more than you can ever give them—and they make it possible for me to wake up every morning loving what I do.”

As master puppeteer, producer, director, playwright—and designer-crafterof sets, costumes, and characters—what Racioppi does is nothing shortof summoning a magical little world into being with each Paper Moonperformance; an ongoing endeavor that’s infused at every level with thevery real passion and artistry of the man who pulls the strings. And he’s been doing it locally for some 15 years—initially at theFirst Avenue Playhouse in Atlantic Highlands and since 2010, the professional puppet troupe has had its very own Paper Moon Theatre.

It’s the culmination of a dream for the Cooper Union graduate. Havingstudied his craft with the acclaimed Puppetworks founder Nick Coppola(who memorably staged Haydn’s marionette opera “Philemon und Baucis” at Lincoln Center)—and having worked with the likes of Wayland Flowers & Madame and TV’s Captain Kangaroo—Racioppi has become mentor, in turn, to artists who have gone on to establish

puppetry programs at major universities,and (in the case of Paper Moon alumnusDoug Strich) operate the well-knownSwedish Cottage Marionette Theatre inCentral Park. Forever on the lookout for“new ideas and input, particularly on thedesign end of things,” the veteran puppeteer has recruited new assistantsfrom places that range from MonmouthUniversity, to a neighboring barbecuerestaurant.

The level of dedication is evident in theSaturday afternoon performances atPaper Moon, when Racioppi and a crewof three to four assistant puppeteers present their own adaptations of suchbeloved tales as “Rumplestiltskin” and“Snow White” on a detailed miniatureproscenium stage—scripted shows (performed to a recorded soundtrack of dialogue and music) for which everycharacter, every prop and every stick ofscenery has been custom-designed andbuilt from scratch.

When taking in a Paper Moon productionfrom the audience, it doesn’t take longbefore all sense of relative size meltsaway; the hand-crafted marionettes assuming the scale of actors on a full-sizestage as the viewer is drawn into thecompelling story—and it’s not until onehas a look behind the scenes that themarvelous illusion is placed back into itsreal-world context.

Often conducted by Racioppi’s partnerJohn McAllister, those post-show backstage tours and mini-lectures are an illuminating journey in themselves foryoung audience members who may verywell represent the next generation of puppetry professionals. The troupe alsoboasts three self-contained “touring” productions that circulate throughout regional schools and even nursinghomes—and a hand-puppet unit is available for appearances at such venues as the Avice Noblett Children’sRoom at Red Bank Public Library.

It’s at the Paper Moon home stage wherethe bond between artists and audience ismost evident; the performers respectingthe timeless strengths of the source

material, and the kids immersing themselves in the performance to an extent that dispels modern notions offragmented attention spans.

“Some of our best audiences have beenspecial needs kids,” observes Racioppi.“An autistic kid won’t look at you, won’ttalk to you—but he’ll open up and talk toa puppet.”

The coming months promise the introduc-tion of some exciting new features atPaper Moon, including the company’sfirst productions designed for hand-rodpuppets (“they’re so eloquent...things become more lyrical with them”) and anambitious Puppetfest in the spring of2013, boasting guest “icons and mentors” from New York, as well as returning graduates of the Paper Mooncrew. Also on the back burner is a planto do “an introduction to opera, using puppets”—and the theatre continues to serve as host venue for special presentations by the Atlantic HighlandsArts Council.

A special program through the holidayseason combine marionette productionsof two seasonal classics—“The Night Before Christmas” and “The SnowQueen.” Performances are 12:30pm onSaturdays (with weekday performancesavailable to schools, camps, pre-schools and other organizations), andreservations ($9 per person).

River Road Books is a marvel of an independent bookstore that not only has stood the test of time as a treasured member of the Fair Haven businesscommunity, but also bucked the trend of closing bookstores...and thrives while doing it.

Laurie Potter, one of the store’s four owners, credits theshop’s success to a simple philosophy: really get to know your customers, andconnect them with greatbooks. Here, in the cheerful,relaxed atmosphere of this neighborhood gatheringplace, customers are greetedlike old friends, which, inmany cases, they are.

“It’s a trust that the communityhas with the staff,” says Potter. “We have a lot of loyalcustomers.” In an era when websites and e-readers are driving large booksellers intobankruptcy, River Road Books experienced a15% increase in sales from last year.

Seven years ago, Laurie Potter and co-owners Sharon Everett, Kim Robinson, andKaren Rumage decided they “wanted to design a bookstore where we would want toshop” and, together, they did it. River RoadBooks “brings together classic literature andthe best current titles in a fun place to browse, right next door.” Today, the storereaches out into the Fair Haven and Rumson school system,working with the Superintendant of Schools to order textbooksfor the district, and organize in-school literary events.

Authors regularly come to the store for signings and readings,with many River Road events geared toward children. Youngreaders can come to browse, attend writing workshops in akid-friendly environment or, always, have their own book talkwith a friendly member of the staff. After school is a busy timeof day when the children’s section becomes like second home,

for parents and youngsters alike.

The store is brimming with titles for allages and interests, carefully chosen bythe staff. Recommendations—writtenon white slips of paper—lead customers to the favorite works of well-read employees. And if, perchance,you don’t find what you’re looking for,you can order any book and, almostalways, pick it up the next morning—a service to customers that Potter saysis much appreciated and one of thestore’s key features.

Nationwide, some 60% of loans, $1 million or less, are made by community banks. Two River Community is a preferred SBA lender with an approximate $600 million loan portfolio that is 85% commercial and 15% consumer. “Small business lending, private banking, medical professionals…these are some of our niches,” Bill notes, adding that,“At our bank, the loan process is not cookie-cutter, but individually ‘crafted’ with stringent underwriting criteria.”

“We want the customer to be successful,” he stresses. “During the protracted economic downturn, Two River CommunityBank has never stopped lending.”

TRCB has attracted to its client roster some marquee names in Monmouth County that have left other banks. “I think we’re doing a better job, and people have come to know us as being the value that we are,” he says. “You need to make the right decisions for your business and for your personal finances. We’re part of the team that helps customersmake those right decisions.”

The show segment may not have happened at all if Lance hadn’t found Kathryn in the first place. As Joyce Wopat, the broker/sales person and branch manager at Heritage House in Rumson recalls,Lance had called area real estate offices, asking to speak with the broker/manager or owner about the sale of his home. He left a message for Joyce at Heritage House, saying that he was looking forsomeone with talent, someone who believed in a number that had notbeen seen in the Colts Neck area. “It was a rare type of message andone that struck a chord, since most sellers say simply, ‘I want to sell myhouse,’” she explains.

Kathryn, a Connecticut native who relocated to Rumson six years ago, picks up the story: “So he called various broker/managers, and,because I was on the desk, on the floor—the agents rotate, and it wasmy turn—it fell to me. It could have been anyone sitting at the frontdesk—a chance to get a $4 million listing!”

When Kathryn and Joyce drove out to Colts Neck to meet their prospect, they learned that Lance began his career in the circulation department at The New York Times, and worked his way up to the position of president. “A successful businessman, father, just a well-spoken, great, laid-back good guy, a real gentleman,” saysKathryn...and an avid golfer. The chemistry that drew them together,Joyce maintains, was a shared interest in sports. Kathryn played Division II soccer at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island.“She still plays it in her head all the time,” Joyce jokes—and she remainsactive in other sports as well, including golf.

“It was the way he thought,” says Kathryn, expounding upon theessence of her collaborative effort with Lance. “That athletic mentalityof working together, as a team. Strategizing. Moving the pieces together to reach the number that he wanted and move on.”

The house sold to Drs. Zi Shan and Li Xiao Hong from Brooklyn, who had never been to Italy, but loved the Villa. The sale included most furnishings, but not the paintings—critical for the full-day HGTV television shoot—and the Chinese couple was notyet fully moved in. Kathryn—who, prior to joining Heritage House had worked for Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors and Saks FifthAvenue and had once owned a home-styling business—knew how to get a house camera-ready. She scrambled to enlist the aidof local artists to showcase their art work throughout the home.

Lance and his wife had built five houses previously and Kathryn and Joyce created a marketing plan they deemed worthy for whatwould be the owner’s final real estate “ta-da!” When Lance gave Heritage House the go-ahead, Kathryn recounts, he told them:“I’m counting on you guys, you’re on my team; if we’re not getting activity, you need to push back on me.”

And this, which Kathryn and Joyce took to heart: “Tell me the truth. Don’t razzle-dazzle me.” They didn’t.

Like clockwork, each manager, before closing, phones Richard Bahadurian with a status report, usually between 11 and 12pm. But the boss does not go home; rather, he puts in another two or three hours of work, in the office at one of his restaurants, where it’s quiet and conducive to accomplishment. With the restaurants shuttered for the night, he eventually retires to sleep a bit, only to get up and return to one of his businesses.

In Fair Haven, Richard owns the Nauvoo Grill Club, the Raven & the Peach, The Raven Tea Room and Fair HavenCommons, the building that houses the two Ravens. Soon he’ll open the all-day breakfast Blue Peach Café FairHaven (770 River Road), a distant cousin of the Blue Peach Café he owns in Wall Township and the Peach TreeRestaurant that he’s rebuilding there.

Richard grew up on the Jersey shore. As a young man, he enjoyed frequenting some of the restaurants “up north.”One of his favorites was called Lock, Stock, and Barrel. Years and restaurant deals later, after numerous iterationsand extensive alterations, Lock, Stock and Barrel is the present day Nauvoo Grill Club.

When he acquired Nauvoo—which means “pleasant place”—it was called the Sun Tavern (and before that theVarsity Club, Lock, Stock, and Barrel, Atlantic Hotel, and, originally, the Bennett Hotel, which opened circa1864).The building had been last been remodeled in the late 1960s.

“We had a hodgepodge of additions we tried to transform into one design,” he explains. Transform they did—huge fireplaces,glowing lamps, earth-toned accessories, over-stuffed leather seating, over 400 custom-designed windows, a new outdoor patiorecently added—while adhering to an all-American look that includes Remington-influenced art and ample use of American walnut and Tennessee stone. Frank Lloyd Wright, whom Richard greatly admires, decidedly influences the choice of mission stylearchitecture.

Using his own core crew of builders and craftsmen, the renovation took several years. “We rebuilt every inch of it,” he says of the latter, “right down to the skeleton.“

As a restaurateur, Richard is as exacting as he is enthusiastic about food. The menu at Nauvoo Grill Club is new American cuisine with a Southwestern influence. Richard tells his staff that great is not good enough. He adheres to thedictum that you can’t make a great meal with cheap ingredients. Nonetheless, hetries to keep Nauvoo’s entrees under $20—a nod to the current economy—whichhelps to fill the 100-plus first-floor seats. Upstairs are rooms used for private banquets and special business events. On the menu, according to a diner writing on TripAdvisor.com, is “The best French onion soup on the planet.”
