LIVING IN a small town, even as idyllic as Cambridge, can lull you into thinking we’re far from the main stages of world football.

Occasionally, events or players act as reminders that a club like our’s is not so far from the big time after all.

This month, we’ve watched former Cambridge junior Chris Wood captain the All Whites at the Oceania Nations Cup (even if he missed the final through controversial circumstances!).

No sooner had that tournament ended than Euro 2016 launched itself onto our

television screens for the best part of a month.

It didn’t take long to see familiar faces. The manager of Hungary, surprise victors over Austria in their opening game, was Bernd Storck, coach of the Hungarian squad who visited John Kerkhof Park a year ago for a FIFA U–20 World Cup warm–up match against Fiji. In the squad was midfielder Adam Nagy, a youngster who also played in Cambridge.

Now we’re about to see friend–of–the–club and former Cambridge junior Jamie Woodlock head to Holland for a chance to play youth football with Premier League club Go Ahead Eagles.

We’ll be following his progress , urging him on to bigger things ... and knowing he too has a Cambridge connection.

Over the past year, our committee has been working on a new strategic plan.

In one of the sessions, someone came up with the line: “We want players to succeed because they came from Cambridge, not despite coming from Cambridge.”

The football world is proving ever closer. Who is to say the next Messi isn’t already kicking a ball around our junior fields?

Strength between the sticks IN RECENT YEARS, Cambridge have been traditionally strong with their senior men’s and women’s goalkeepers.

Our current crop of custodians are playing a key part in helping our teams play at top level.

The gloves have been worn in our men’s first team by Fraser Nicholls and Rex Fowler this year, demonstrating the notion that good goalkeepers come in pairs if they can drive each other on at training.

In our women’s team, captain Jen Hull is in her fifth season with the club, having missed only one match during that time.

Up-and-coming ‘keepers like Patrick Espin and Cole Given are getting their chance in our WaiBOP Championship and Waikato A teams, proving there’s depth in the position.

A key factor in the club’s development has

been goalkeeper coach Kim Brierley, who moved his Just4Keepers Academy to John Kerkhof Park three years ago.

Having a dedicated and experienced specialist coach has proven to be highly successful for the club and Brierley is now making his skills available to promising goalkeepers in our junior ranks.

He’s running a weekly development programme for keen goalkeepers with more than a dozen signing up to hone their skills.

Women challenge for title CAMBRIDGE ARE in a three–way struggle for the Waikato Women’s League title after a string of wins, the latest being a 2–1 win against Hamilton Wanderers.

With the league reaching its halfway mark, Cambridge, Melville United and Tokoroa have pulled clear at the top of the table, with the Reds sitting in third spot.

Last Sunday, goals from leading goalscoer Astrid Howarth and Rachel Westend secured three points against Wanderers, ensuring the

side will stay in the title hunt.Cambridge drew earlier in the programme

with Melville but lost to Tokoroa.Coach Andrew Taylor and his young side

will now look to maintain their winning form for what looks like an exciting finish to the league season.

Hungarian star’s link to Cambridge

A YOUNG HUNGARIAN footballer who played in Cambridge a year ago is a surprise star at the Euro 2016 Championships in France.

Adam Nagy visited Cambridge for a friendly match against Fiji as part of Hungary’s preparation for the FIFA U-20 World Cup being staged in New Zealand.

Following a strong performance in New Zealand, Nagy won his way into the full Hungarian national side.

Nagy and his U-20 team mates beat Fiji 7-0 in a match staged by Cambridge Football Club on May 25 last year, the first time the club had hosted an international match.

In their preview of Euro 2016, British newspaper the Guardian picked Nagy to be the surprise success of the tournament.

“The young defensive midfielder has a great work rate and is good at intercepting passes and starting attacks,” the paper said.

Hungary started Euro 2016 strongly with a 2–0 win against Austria and a 1–1 draw with Iceland.

Woodlock off to Europe CAMBRIDGE–BASED footballer Jamie Woodlock has been

recruited by a leading Dutch club well–known for developing world–class players.

Based in Deventer, Go Ahead Eagles play in the Dutch Premier League, and are four-time national champions.

Woodlock (18), a former Cambridge FC junior who now plays in New Zealand for Hamilton Wanderers, has been signed for the club’s U-19 youth team and will play in a competition watched by scouts from top European teams.

Go Ahead Eagles have produced many notable players, including goalkeeper Raimond van der Gouw (Manchester United) and international Marc Overmars (Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona).

Woodlock, who is the brother of Cambridge FC’s first team captain Patrick, and the son of coach Mike, leaves for Holland in July to start training in August.

Last year, Woodlock was a member of the New Zealand team that qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Finals.

Fraser Nicholls (goalkeeper)Joined Cambridge in 2013 after five years between the posts for Otorohanga, including two seasons of Federation 1. Four appearances for the Waikato All Stars .

Rex Fowler (goalkeeper)A promising young goalkeeper who joined Cambridge from Hukanui-Rototuna in 2015.

Nathan Claridge (defender or midfield)Made his Northern League debut at 16. Won the club’s Young Player of the Year Award in 2011 when he captained the club’s U19s at the national youth championships.

Adrian Clark (defender)Experienced and reads the game well, played for top Wellington clubs Lower Hutt and Stop Out before joining Cambridge.

Kieran Hill (defender)A first team regular at Ngaruawahia United until his transfer to John Kerkhof Park last year, he brings considerable Northern League experience to Cambridge.

Patrick Woodlock (midfield/captain)In his second spell at Cambridge, with Northern League experience here and with Wanderers and Ngaruawahia Utd. Waikato FC Youth player and Waikato age group rep. Has won Cambridge’s Player of Year award four times.

Danny Styles (midfield)A hard–working midfielder, Styles joined Cambridge in 2013 and was a first–team regular in 2014. In 2015, work commitments limited his appearances but the club hopes to see more of him on the pitch this season.

Jason Szabo (forward or midfield)Experienced attacking midfielder who hails from the UK. Gets amongst the goals and was 2013 top scorer and ‘Player of the Year’ for our Waikato A team, and runner–up for the Premiership team’s 2015 Golden Boot.

Tom Woutersen (forward)Learned his football with Cambridge, helping win the U–19 Satellite Youth Tournament in Napier, before spending three seasons with Palmerston North Marist. Returned to Cambridge for 2013.

Won the team’s Golden Boot in 2013 and again in 2015 with 14 goals in the WaiBOP Premiership.

Adam Brady (forward)Joined the club as a new arrival from the United Kingdom in 2015, where he played for Melbourne Inn in the Plymouth and West Devon Combination Football League. Was a regular goalscorer for the WaiBOP Championship side and scored a memorable goal in the end–of–season promotion play–off against Waitemata.

Sam Garmonsway (defender or winger)Former Cambridge High School player who joined the club in 2014 after playing for Universities AFC while studying at Canterbury University.

Dan Podjursky (forward)A speedy forward with good ball control, Podjursky made his first team debut as a 17–year–old in the Northern League, and played a season for Hawkes Bay in the national youth league.

Josh Dagnall (winger)Made his first team debut as a schoolboy, helping the side win promotion from the ‘old’ Federation 2 League to what is now the WaiBOP Premiership. Returned to the pitch last season after leaving Cambridge for a stint in the army.

Callum MacLeod (forward)The leading goalscorer for the 2015 Cambridge U–17 team, MacLeod also won the Golden Boot for leading all scoring in the WaiBOP U–17 Federation League. Promising youngster who marked his senior club debut with a goal in the opening game of the 2016 WaiBOP Championship.

Jack Taylor (forward)In his second spell at Cambridge, having returned to the club for the 2016 season. In 2014, he was the club’s top goalscorer in the ‘old’ Federation 1, and he led the forward line to help the side win promotion from Federation 2 the year before.

Jordan Sylvester (defender or winger)Joined Cambridge for the 2014 season from Universities AFC, Christchurch.

Jason Chewins (defender or midfield)Rejoineds Cambridge for 2015 after a spell with Northern League club Melville United, having won their Player of the Year title in 2011 and played national league football for Waikato FC. Before emigrating, Chewins set an all–time club record with 489 appearances for professional club Aldershot Town.

Glen Carmichael (forward or midfield)In his second spell with Cambridge after a short stint with Northern League club Ngaruawahia United. Previously played Northern League for Matamata Swifts.

Andrew Taylor (utility)First joined Cambridge in 2011 to play Northern League and returned after a spell at Matamata to play at the club where he also coaches the women’s first team. Versatile and able to play in most positions.

Brett Clark (co–coach)Veteran player with the club and former first team player who took the reins in 2015, leading a newly–formed coaching group.

Mike Woodlock (co– coach)Coached Cambridge between 2008 and 2010 in Northern League Division 2 and brings vast experience to the coaching team.

Kim Brierley (goalkeeper coach)Runs the Just4Keepers goalkeeping academy, coaches WaiBOP Federation goalkeepers and has been the WaiBOP women’s ASB League goalkeeper coach for the past two seasons.

Waikato Unicol was founded in 1960, originally as Teachers College. The name changed to Teachers Varsity in 1969.

In 1977, the name changed again, to Waikato University College, following a committee meeting at the Hillcrest Tavern though the club effectively traded as Waikato Unicol. In 1978 Unicol won the Northern League Division Four (South).

Their highest finishing place was third in the Northern League Second Division in 1985.

In this fixture last year, Cambridge scored a dramatic 3–2 win with a Glen Carmichael winning goal in the third minute of added time, a victory that secured the WaiBOP Premiership.

Unicol got a measure of revenue, beating Cambridge 2-1 in the 2016 season opener.

In its early days, the teams played in light blue after the colours used by Cambridge University, England. 1951: The club held its first formal

meeting on March 20, 1951, appointing Viv Butler as its first president, and R.S.Entwistle as its patron.

Butler’s support of English club Arsenal led to a change of club colours and from the mid-1950s, Cambridge teams have played in red and white strips. 1957: The club played its home games

on the Town Square until 1957 when a two-room wooden shed was built on the Leamington Domain for £134.19. 1964: On December 1, 1964, the

Cambridge Borough Council agreed to provide the club with land on the town belt in Vogel Street and plans were drawn up for the clubrooms to be built. 1967: The club moved into the Vogel St

grounds, where it has been based since. The grounds were renamed John Kerkhof Park after Dutch immigrant John Kerkhof who, with members of his family and other supporters, built the clubrooms and changing facilities.

The grounds are now owned by the Waipa District Council but leased to the club on a long-term basis. 1972: The club applied for its senior

men’s team to join the Northern League competition. 1974: Extensions to the clubrooms

and playing fields became necessary and were built in 1974, with new junior grounds established beside the Polo Club grounds further north on Vogel St. 1978: The club elected its first women

committee member. 1983: Junior teams (11,12 and 13 year

olds) entered the Waikato competitions for

the first time in 1983. 1984: The club achieved its first

significant success at senior level, winning the Northern League’s 4th Division in 1984. 1993: The club reached new heights

in 1993, winning the Northern League 2nd

division. 1995: The club built a concrete car

park that’s still in use today. The car park is where the club sometimes erects temporary grandstands for major fixtures. 2005: The Waipa District Council

approved the transfer of the Polo Grounds to the football club for use by its junior players, while the polo club moved to new grounds in Lamb St, Leamington. 2007: The old polo clubhouse was

knocked down to make way for a new junior building. The Cambridge junior teams celebrated their new home by winning all five 8th-Open grade WJSA knockout trophies, a first for both Cambridge and the WJSA. 2008: The club’s main senior clubrooms

survived a tornado in late 2008 but suffered damage to walls, roof and windows, while shattered glass was sprayed over the nearby number one pitch. Other sports clubs and community groups came to help the club and helped it rebuild. 2010: The club launched a five–year

plan for its membership which had now grown to more than 600 players, with men’s, women’s and junior teams. 2011: After many seasons in the

Northern League the club was relegated from the Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 2 in 2011 after finishing 12th and losing the challenger series playoff vs Manukau City AFC.

The club won the New Zealand Match Programme of the Year Award for 2011. 2012: The club elected to drop two

From humble beginnings ... CAMBRIDGE Football Club has been serving its community since its formation in 1948 when football enthusiasts began organising games for two junior teams.

divisions into the Waikato Bay of Plenty Football Federation Division Two to rebuild under coach Karl Dagnall and won promotion in 2012 to Waikato Bay of Plenty Football Federation Division One.

In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club. 2013: Cambridge FC and the

neighbouring Cambridge Harriers and Athletics Club began a partnership, enabling the football club to play some games at the adjacent athletics track while it developed John Kerkhof Park.

In 2013, the club won the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate and hosted premium events such as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final, the Waikato v Bay of Plenty All Stars game, and the WaiBOP Women's All Stars v WaiBOP National League side.

In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United.

This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system. 2014: The club's first team finished

runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup.

The Cambidge Lacrosse Club moved its playing base to John Kerkhof Park in 2014.

In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community.

WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches.

Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club).

The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

also led to the club’s nomination for the national Trustpower Community Awards to be held in Wellington in March 2015.

Cambridge completed its hat-trick of major awards in 2014, being named Waipa District’s Sports Club of the Year. We were finalists in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year while chairman Greg Zeuren was named Sports Administrator of the Year for both Waipa and the Waikato in 2014. 2015: As the club entered its 68th season,

it did so as an all–year operation, providing winter football for 600+ players, spring/early summer 5-a-side football for social players and acting as a base for national league summer football.

It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts.

In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/changing rooms for local and visiting players.

On 25 May 2015, the club staged its first ever international match when Fiji and Hungary came to Cambridge for an U–20

international as preparation for the FIFA U–20 World Cup tournament.

In July 2015, our club was awarded the Quality Club Mark by New Zealand Football, becoming only the fourth club in our region to achieve the 1 Star status, and becoming one of fewer than 30 clubs throughout the contry to earn the QCM.

Our playersProbably the club's best known past player

is New Zealand international striker Chris Wood who joined English Championship club Leeds United for $4.6 million from Leicester City in July 2015.

Wood made his senior debut at Cambridge as a 14–year–old, having previously played for our juniors.

Another former New Zealand international is Maria Anderton, who played for the Football Ferns in 1987, and captained the Cambridge women’s A team for 12 seasons until her retirement as a player in 2014. Life MembersElected life members: Vic Butler, W.J.Sugden,
