THE dugouTSteve Pearman Assistant First Team Manager

I would like to extend a warm Knappers welcome to our visitors to Redding Way Sheerwater. I have been asked to pen this weeks managers thoughts as Ruggs is away on international duty at the moment.

Last week saw us travel to play a hugely improved CB Hounslow side at Bedfont and Feltham’s ground. This is another pitch designed with drainage rather than football in mind. I would like to thank the CB staff on behalf of the club for their hospitality and sportsmanship. The game itself was played on a challenging surface with swirling winds making it more of a battle than a spectacle.

After last weeks convincing win against Kilburn, a much changed Knappers starting eleven saw Man of The Match Alex Lumley moved to right back to cover for Ben Acton who was carry a slight knock. Joe Mc Shane replaced Timmy Taylor at Left Back. A new midfield three of Connor Close, Max Galbraith and Matty Edwards started this week’s game. Upfront Josh Watkins earned his first start of the season after his brace against Kilburn and Craig Prendergast returned to replace the injured Ruggles. Knaphill took the lead after the referee’s warnings for aggression were ignored at a corner. The resulting penalty was comfortably converted by Craig Prendergast. Craig then went on to make it two after the CB defence failed to clear various attempts at goal. Skipper Jamie Doble converted after the ball rebounded of the cross bar and CB benefited from the referee overturning the linesman’s offside flag to award them their only goal of the half. Early in second half saw Hounslow awarded a penalty for apparent hand ball and then catch us out with one of the many balls they launched forward to bring the game back to 3-3. Ruggs introduced fresh legs in the form of Timmy Taylor, Liam Pearson and Ben Acton. This gave the Knappers a much needed boost and after failing to convert some well crafted chances Matty Powell shot hard and low from outside the box to maintain our 100% record.

On a personal note today’s game will be a strange one for me as I have been friends with Sheerwater Gaffer John Cook for nearly 30 years, but never actually been on an opposing bench to him. I am sure both squads will do their management team’s justice and the more deserving side on the day will holding bragging rights until the return encounter.

I hope everyone enjoys the match and the Knappers experience.

Also a welcome to the three match officials for a Division One encounter which we hope will produce some entertaining football and the highlight of the afternoon. Last Saturday, Sheerwater were away to the team we played the previous weekend, South Kilburn, where their hosts gained maximum points in the 4-1 win. On the same day Knaphill were also away gaining a 4-3 win against CB Hounslow. What a difference a year makes in football! This time last year, Knaphill had gained only one win from five games during August, whereas the 2013/14 season has seen the Club get off to a great start, winning the first four games, scoring sixteen goals - the Division’s only team with a 100% record, and top of the table. Following the wins over Farleigh, Dorking, South Kilburn, last Saturday’s visit to play CB Hounslow brought about another three points. The win was secured just six minutes from time with Matt Powell scoring the fourth goal to make it a 4-3 final scoreline. Knaphill took a 3-1 halftime lead through goals from Craig Prendergast (2) and Jamie Doble, but then the home side pulled themselves right back into the game with two second half goals to level at 3-3, before Powell fired home the winner for the visitors.

Last Saturday, our Reserves were in action for their first match in the Suburban League playing North Greenford United at Redding Way in the newly formed Central Division. The visitors took the lead after twelve minutes, and went on to score two more in the last fifteen minutes of the game, with Knaphill netting a consolation goal in the last few minutes of the game through substitute Matthew Clark. Today the Reserves are away to Tooting and Mitcham. Our Youth team swing into action next week, playing their first Southern Youth League game of the season at home to Farnham Town with the kick off 7.30pm. This is followed by their second game on Tuesday 3rd September when they play host to local rivals Westfield.Back to the first team this afternoon when they will be looking to enhance on their winning start to the season, not only for today, but also next Saturday 31st August when Staines Lammas will be the visitors to Redding Way, kick off 3pm. September starts with three successive away games before returning to Redding Way on Saturday 28th September (v AFC Croydon Athletic). The first of those games will be on Friday 6th September in the FA Vase when they play Premier Division side Badshot Lea,

the tie takes place at Ash United’s ground with kick off at 7.30pm. This match is switched to Friday evening due to Badshot Lea ground sharing with Ash United, who were also drawn at home on the original date of Saturday 7th September. Should there be a replay, this will be back here at Redding Way on Tuesday 10th September kick off 7.30pm. Before we go back to this afternoon here at Redding Way for this local derby the club would like to welcome two new sponsors to the club. Our first new sponsors are UK Packaging who will be appearing on the new first team home and away kit. Meanwhile new sponsors Indo Restaurants will be sponsoring our ladies team. Welcome to the club and we look forward to working with you all.Now we look forward to an entertaining 90 minutes of football. Enjoy the game……….

Combined Counties League Division 1, Saturday 10th August Knaphill 5 - 0 South Kilburn

RePORTinG bACkKnaphill not only kept a clean sheet in this their third league game of the season, but also their 100% record, the only one in the Division, after Saturday’s 5-0 win over South Kilburn at Redding Way, to stay top of the league. With eight goals scored in the space of five days, which included the midweek success over Dorking, a new look Knaphill side have got off to their best ever start to a new season.

The home side certainly made their mark early in the game, scoring two goals within the first ten minutes. A free kick from Alex Lumley was delivered into the 18 yard box, and fell to Danny Hartlebury who buried his shot to give the home side the lead after seven minutes. Two minutes later it was 2-0 as the visitors were hit by Knaphill’s opportunism when Dan Thorogood drilled his shot wide of the keeper and into the far corner of goal.

Knaphill almost gave a goal away after 19 minutes when Ian Messenger failed to clear his lines, and as the ball spun towards an opponents player, keeper Lee Allen was forced to deny a goal scoring chance by pouncing on the ball to stop a shot at goal. Through much of the half, Knaphill had a lot of possession, showing some neat one touch football and precision passing, putting pressure on the visitors. But they were unable to increase their 2-0 scoreline in the first half, in fact it was South Kilburn who almost shook Knaphill in the 35th minute when Allen produced a crucial save, this time with an outstretched leg to deny a goalscoring

opportunity, and a minute later turned an effort away for a corner.

Early in the second half, Knaphill were looking secure with the two goal lead, and in the 48th minute, early pressure forced a visitors defender to slice the ball into his own goal to make it 3-0. Although probably not showing quite as much fluency as the first half, Knaphill still looked in control, despite a valiant attempt from the visitors to try and reduce the arrears. After 66 minutes Knaphill forged into a four goal lead when substitute Josh Watkins picked his spot to slot home. It was high fives after 85 minutes when Watkins struck again despite the keeper’s effort to save which was just over the line, ending with Knaphill securing a comfortable 5-0 victory,

Knaphill: Allen, Acton, Taylor, Lumley, Doble, Messenger (Pearson 65mins), Hartlebury, Thorogood, Ruggles (Watkins 55mins), Powell (Young 71mins), Edwards.

Goals: Hartlebury, Thorogood, og, Watkins (2).

Man of the Match from the South Kilburn game Alex Lumley receives his award from Chairman David Freeman.

PAyinG US A viSiT......sHEERWATER FC

Sheerwater Football Club was formed in 1958 and founded by the late John French. Sheerwater joined the local Woking & District League.Sheerwater progressed through the Divisions to obtain Intermediate status in the Surrey Intermediate League (Western) in the 1967-68 season. This enabled the club to progress to a senior level, playing in the Combined Counties League for a number of seasons. In the 1982-83 season Sheerwater joined the new Surrey County Premier League which was formed for those Clubs who could not fulfil the Senior criteria. Sheerwater were relegated after a number of seasons in the Surrey County Premier League to the South Eastern Intermediate League, which was the only space made available to the Club.

Sheerwater were then determined to either gain promotion or move to a more regional Intermediate League. They were granted two sideways moves, firstly to the Surrey Combination League and then moved to the Surrey Intermediate League (Western). In the 1991-92 season Sheerwater gained promotion back to The Surrey County Premier League but were relegated once more but were granted a pass back to the SCPL due to a wrong decision to relegate the Club the previous season. In 2002 the Surrey County Premier League was disbanded as all the Clubs and League officers decided to join the Seagrave Haulage Football League, forming the new Division One League for the season 2003-04. The League has now a new sponsor so the League is now known as the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League.

Last season Sheerwater finished 15th in the league. The club are proud of achieving 50 years in football and celebrated this occasion on Saturday 22nd November 2008 with over 270 guests at the H G Wells Conference Centre in Woking Town Centre.

Knaphill continued their excellent start to the season with a 4-3 win over CB Hounslow Utd at The Orchard on Saturday afternoon.

RePORTinG bACkGoals from Craig Prendergast (2), Jamie Doble and Matt Powell handed The Knappers a fourth successive win, although they were made to work hard for the points. The hosts battled back from 3-1 down to level matters only for Matt Powell to win the game for Phil Ruggles’s side late on.

Manager Phil Ruggles was forced into making two changes to the side which beat South Kilburn last weekend. Dan Thorogood was unavailable and was replaced by Connor Close whilst Dan Hartlebury who was carrying a knock was on the bench and Max Galbraith took his place.

Alex Lumley moved to right back in place of Ben Acton and there was a start for Josh Watkins who netted twice against Kilburn. Craig Prendergast returned to the starting eleven following his recovery from a rib injury.

Knaphill soon had Hounslow on the back foot and following a corner the referee awarded the Knappers with a penalty for a push and Craig Prendergast stepped up to put Knaphill in front on 11 minutes. Hounslow responded well but were well marshalled by the Knaphill defense of Lumley, Doble, Messenger and McShane.

Prendergast added his and Knaphill’s second on 29 minutes with a low shot which the Hounslow keeper managed to get a hand on it but it had enough power to find the back of the net.

The Knappers had a number of chances to extend their lead, one of which through Connor Close who’s powerful 25 yard volley only narrowly went over the crossbar.

If the Knappers thought it was going to be an easy afternoon they were wrong and despite appeals for offside the home side pulled one back after 40 minutes although better defending should have seen the opportunity not taken.

Four minutes later and skipper Jamie Doble got in on the act as he reacted quickest after Hounslow failed to clear their lines when he headed the third just on half time.

At this stage Knaphill were cruising but Hounslow came out the for the second half a different side and were rewarded a penalty which was duly despatched. On the hour mark the hosts were level as Knaphill failed to clear their lines. However, the Knappers were not to be undone and Matt Powell once again proved the match winner as his shot on the turn into the bottom corner on 84 minutes saw the Knappers 100% start to the season continue.

in REsERvEGood afternoon everyone,Since I last spoke to you the Reserves played there last pre-season game at Bisley against Raynes Park Vale. This was arranged as it would provide us with a stern test before we open our campaign the following week. This proved to be the case as we dominated for the first half hour, going 2-nil up through young Jon Coates. Unfortunately we then switched off and aloud Raynes Park back in the game and the half finished 2-2. At half time seven changes were made which always affects the continuity of the side. We then conceded early so were 3-2 down, equalised through James Felgate to make it 3-3. Then conceded late on to lose 4-3. A good work out with Dan Sales, Liam Giles & Jon Coates standing out.

We then played our first Surburban League game at Redding Way last Saturday against North Greenford. This was a game everyone was looking forward to and the boys couldn’t wait to get started.

The line up was as follows:- Knight;Power,Sales,Emen,Dawber;Davis,Giles,Pitcher;Young,Murray,Jones. Subs:- Clark,Postance,Herbert,Porter,Shepherd.

The players started brightly but must quickly learn that as much as we want the game played on the floor, we must play forward not sideways or back, and that’s what happened in the first 25mins, we had a lot of possession in our own half but created little. We had to make an enforced change with Josh Young pulling his hamstring so Charlie Postance replaced him on 20mins.

In North Greenfords first attack they scored. So at half time we went in losing 1 nil. After a positive chat at half time, the boys again started brightly and were now causing North Greenfords defence problems. We now were getting Jones,Murray,Postance into the game. An hour into the game and a few we’re starting to tire, fitness is going to be key in this league, to be able to last the full 90mins. Again on 70 and 75 mins we conceded sloppy goals through poor defending. The bonus was we kept going and pulled a goal back through sub Matt Clark, who replaced Rob Jones on 85mins after good work down the right by Charlie Postance. Shepherd replaced Power on 80mins.

This was a tough opening game for us against a side that won the league last season, I don’t think we’ll have a tougher game all season. We must take on board, adapt and try and get to the level North Greenford are at now. This will take time and a commitment from the players, but I believe we will get there. I think that game was tougher than many the 1st will play this season and that sums up the league the Reserves are now in.

Today we travel to Tooting & Mitcham and look to secure our first points of the season.

Good luck to Ruggs and the 1st team against Sheerwater today, extend the run of wins and get another 3 points.

All the best

The Southern Youth League’s season doesn’t start for another three days but now is a good time to look forward to see how the Young Knappers are shaping up for the upcoming campaign. Manager Gary Taylor has been working hard to attract talented youngsters to the Knaphill cause. He has also retained the experienced former semi-pro Mark Dawber as Assistant Manager and highly rated young coach Alex Lumley. The pleasing part of last season was to see so many youngsters make their senior debuts for the Firsts & Reserves, as well as U18 captain Jonny Coats securing the SYL Player of then Season award along with the Club’s Player’s Player award.

Pre-season friendlies have seen convincing wins against Westside (5-1), long time rivals Molesey (6-1) and Walton & Hersham (7-1) and a hard fought 2-2 with the highly rated Metropolitan Police U18’s. Monday night’s 0-7 defeat by a strong Ascot United was played with a mixture of 1st year (15 yrs old boys) and some triallists. With a final friendly at Bedfont Sports still to come, the youngster should hit the ground running looking to start the season on a winning note and the prize of a first time 1st Qualifying Round FA Youth Cup away tie against either Sussex side Lancing or long time rivals Molesey. Gary also took along young sides (U16’s) to the Molesey & Meadow Sports Tournaments this summer and walked away with the titles at both.

There are old faces from last year such as striker Tony Kozakis who has scored 5 goals in pre-season and Knaphill’s Golden Boot Winner from last year Mekhail McLaughlin who has scored 4 pre-season. Nico Aquino, Cameron Bose, Alfie Fairhall, Robert Litchfield & Scott James have all played parts of varying degrees last season and will this year all play significant roles with the team.

New faces to look for include two new keepers, Alex Kozakis (Tony’s younger brother) and Fraser McCambridge-Heal who are both 16 years old. Other new names include Louis Ali, Charlie

Brace, Max Carey, Oliver Hudson, Rhys King, Ben Littlemore, Bradley Mulhall, Dan Qureshi & Nathan Williams. There are a few old faces still to make their decisions as to where they will be playing this season and Gary hopes to have these players signed up shortly.

As of yet the fixtures for the SYL are yet to be released, but for the first time since the formation of the Youth team there will not be the issue of having to play a number of away games first as the restrictions on the floodlights have now been lifted. This will allow a much more balanced feel to the season and allow for the new players to get a run at Redding Way as soon as possible. The club prides itself on being able to offer some of the best facilities locally and this has led to the link up with local junior club Woking Cougars. The Cougars finish at 17 years old and the opportunity to have young local players coming up through the ranks is something the Knaphill is very proud to pursue.

The 2013/14 season also offers the opportunity to play our local rivals Westfield at U18 level as they have moved divisions within the SYL to provide an opportunity for local bragging rights. After last years 5th place finish, the team has a challenge to improve on that and also last year’s disappointment in not reaching the Grant-McLellan Cup Final for the first time in three years. Looking at the pre-season games so far, Knaphill’s supporters will have a lot to be excited about when watching the U18’s.
