ChAiRMAn’s WElCOMEWelcome everyone to Redding Way, our supporters, players, club officials and a warm welcome to our visitors Dorking FC, their players, club officials and to the three match officials for this FA Vase First Round Replay.

These will be only my second programme notes of the season in what is turning out to be a interesting campaign so far. Our league place clearly puts us in a better position then this time last season, in fact we are fourteen points better off and in the top three. Last season we had managed only seven points and were in the bottom three. How times have changed but I know Phil, his management staff and players will not get carried away. There is a long way to go and all the teams in division one are capable of beating each other.

Away from league priorities our FA Vase campaign continues and we have already created club history by reaching the first round proper. Hopefully we can secure a passage into the second round today although as on Saturday our opponents might have something to say about that. If the first encounter is anything to go by then we could be in for another interesting cup encounter.

Prior to Saturday we bounced back to winning ways following three straight defeats, two in the cup and one in the league with a hard fought 2-1 win over Banstead Athletic here at Redding Way. The task was not made easy as we played an hour with nine men but the players showed great spirit and determination to pick up three points. Although a cup run in the both league cups would have been nice, the league is the priority (although the Vase is a close second priority due to the cash incentives). We still have two more cup competitions to play in - the Southern Combination cup versus Cove and a County Cup clash with Epsom Athletic.

Our Reserves have picked up in their last two matches with a win and a draw having struggled to adjust to life in the Suburban League early on however, given time we will establish ourselves well in our new venture.

Our youth team are having mixed fortunes so far this season but the young guns have been playing well recently and their performances have warranted better results. Almost all of the players are first year under 18's and they have had to learn quickly. Pleasing enough and as in previous seasons a few players have broken into our reserve side which is always a good sign something is going right.

Away from the playing side those of you who watch us here at Redding Way would have noticed that the third phase of spectator hard standing is now completed. I would like to thank FG Group and Sainsbury's for their kind offer to pay for and carry out the work.

The new bar is almost complete and the pumps taps for draught lager and bitter will be going in shortly and we should have our full club license to sell alcohol by the end of this month. At the moment we are using temporary events licenses although there will be times where we cannot sell alcohol so please bear with us.

I would to thank the club's committee members for their tireless work on and away from matchdays, week in week out. Without them this club would not run as well as it does.

Thank you for your support, enjoy the game and have a safe journey home.

David

A swift return for a second match between the two Clubs after Saturday’s first meeting at the Meadowbank that ended 2-2 after extra time. Ironically, both Clubs had other fixtures arranged for tonight, we were scheduled to play Cove(they drew their Vase game too) in the Southern Combination Cup, and Dorking were due a home League game.

Two aspects of Saturday’s match saw both teams come close to a winning position. With just a few minutes remaining and Dorking leading 1-0, Knaphill equalised a minute into stoppage time, Scott Todd the scorer on his first team debut with a fine strike from the edge of the 18 yard box. Then five minutes into the second period of extra time the visitors took a 2-1 lead through Alex Lumley, but it was the home side who drew level five minutes from time to force a replay.

So, both teams close to a passage through to the next round, which is up for the taking tonight. If the match finishes all square after 90 minutes, it will be extra time again, and if necessary this time it would also involve penalties. However, we look forward to an entertaining match here this evening, and a result in 90 minutes!

Prior to Saturday’s FA Vase game, Knaphill were in League action the previous weekend, and after three successive defeats, two in League Cup competition and a League defeat, the team got back to picking up the points in the 2-1 home win over Banstead Athletic, with goals from Damian Panter and Josh Watkins to keep us in the top three placings in Division One, and a position we hope to enhance on away to Cobham this Saturday.

Our Reserves have been amongst the goals in their two recent League games, a week ago they were away to Cobham Reserves in the Suburban League and gained maximum points with a 5-2 win, to chalk up a double over their opponents having won 6-1 here a few weeks ago. Last Saturday Hanworth Villa were the visitors to Redding Way and the points were shared in a 3-3 draw. The Reserves are home to Tooting & Mitcham this Saturday. The Youth team’s away game at Farnham in the Southern Youth League last week, saw seven goals scored, but unfortunately our lads were on the wrong end of the result despite scoring three, and lost 4-3.

Looking ahead to our next game here at Redding Way, we play Epsom Athletic in the Surrey Premier Cup next Tuesday 29th October kick off 7.30pm, but prior to that there’s the visit to Cobham for a League game this Saturday 26th October, and the next home League game is on Saturday 2nd November against Sandhurst Town kick off 3pm.

Meanwhile, enjoy tonight’s game….and have a safe journey home..

Bryan

Combined Counties League Division 1, Saturday 12th October Knaphill FC 2 - 1 Banstead Athletic

REPORTinG bAckIrrespective of the narrow margin, the scoreline got Knaphill back to winning ways at Redding Way on Saturday to keep them in the top three of Division One. Unfortunately the game produced three red cards, two for Knaphill and one for Banstead, all coming in a rather uninspiring first half. But although striking two well taken goals in the first half, Knaphill’s play was more positive in the second half, despite not adding to their two goals.

There were some opportunities in the first half hour for both sides to make a breakthrough, Knaphill’s Damian Panter had a header just wide of the post after 17 minutes, and five minutes later Matt Powell’s stinging shot was too hot to hold by the Banstead keeper, and the ball came to Panter who netted from close range, but had just moved into an offside position.

Although lacking sufficient pressure on their opponents, and at times composure, Knaphill broke the deadlock in the 34th minute as Panter moved into a good position to coolly fire past the keeper from and make it 1-0. Five minutes later came the sending off incident which was to put the home side down to nine men and the visitors to ten. Banstead were denied by keeper Lee Allen on the verge of halftime, but it was Knaphill who forged into a two goal lead when Josh Watkins slotted home five minutes into stoppage time.

Knaphill improved their overall play in the second half, showing more confidence in the second 45 minutes than the first. They put in a battling performance to help them take a grip on the 2-0 lead with only nine players. Knaphill went close to extending the lead after 70 minutes when an overhead kick from Daltrey was on target for goal only for the keeper to pull off a fine save and turn the effort away for a corner.

At the other end, Knaphill keeper Lee Allen denied Banstead in the 77th minute with an excellent save, but could do nothing to stop the visitors reduce the deficit three minutes later following a defensive mistake that let in substitute Tyrone Newton. The visitors clipped the post in the 85th minute, whilst at the other end Knaphill sub Charlie Postance went very close to a third for Knaphill, but they held firm for the final minutes to clinch maximum points.

Club COMPETiTiOns

PAyinG us A VisiT...... DORKinG FC

Dorking were founder members of the Surrey County Senior League in 1922, and moved in 1956 to its current ground in Meadowbank Park, having previously played at a ground in Pixham Lane.

The club joined the Corinthian league in 1956 and then the Athenian League in 1963. The club merged with Guildford City of the Southern League in 1974 to form Guildford & Dorking United, with Meadowbank as the home ground. However, after just two seasons, the club collapsed in mid-season, with another club being formed called Dorking Town in 1977 to complete its predecessor’s remaining games before joining the Surrey Senior League in 1977–78. In 1983, by then playing in Isthmian League, the club reverted its name to Dorking F.C.

In 1989-90 season Dorking reached the final of the Surrey Senior Cup, one of the oldest cup competitions with the first final contested in 1882-83. This was an achievement the club had only

once previously managed in 1885-86 season some 104 years previously. Unfortunately they lost both finals.

In the 1992–93 season, they reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in their history. In the 2005–06 season, they played in the Isthmian League Division Two, but, as a result of the restructuring of non-league football, they now play in the Combined Counties Football League. The club suffered relegation from the league’s Premier Division in 2007/08, playing one season in Division One before gaining promotion back into the Premier division through the play-offs. Last season was also a tough one for Dorking which again saw them relegated from the Premier Division to Division 1 where we face them in tonights game. Coming off of the back of a 1-2 defeat to Sheerwater in the opening game of the season, Dorking will be looking to gain three points from todays game which promises to be an exciting affair.

Knaphill FC would like to extend a warm welcome to Dorking FC, their Management and Supporters - Welcome to Redding Way.

FA Vase First Round Saturday 19th October. Dorking FC 1 - 1 Knaphill (2-2 AET)

REPORTinG bAckThis FA Vase tie at the Meadowbank on Saturday finished with the two teams playing out a 2-2 draw after extra time, both having a possible win snatched away with time running out in the first 90 minutes, and then in the second period of extra time, but ended with a replay to take place at Redding Way on Tuesday night kick off 7.30pm.

The first half failed to find either side exploiting their ventures towards goal creating chances, with Knaphill firing only a couple of decent efforts on the home goal, both from Josh Watkins, whilst Dorking tested Lee Allen a couple of times which brought out a fine reflex action to save a free kick from entering the net, and pulled off an even better save from the Knaphill keeper shortly before the break. Although both teams were guilty of some misdirected distribution, it was a bit like trying to complete a jigsaw, only after finding certain pieces, an important part was missing – the finishing piece. Hence the first half came to a close without any goals.

Knaphill were caught out after 56 minutes when Adam Fletcher swept behind the Knaphill defence, cut into the 18 yard box to send a shot past Allen and into the far corner to put Dorking in front. Then an effort from Dorking, which seemed more of a cross than a shot, glanced off the far post to give the visitors a bit of a scare, and for Knaphill, substitute Charlie Postance delivered a tame header into arms of the keeper.

With time running out, Knaphill struck an equaliser one minute into stoppage time as Scott Todd making his first team debut, delivered a terrific drive just outside the 18 yard box to make it 1-1. A late smash and grab goal to keep Knaphill in the game and force extra time. Three minutes into the first period, the visitors should have taken the lead. The ball flashed across the face of goal, and Postance missed a sitter from close range in front of a gaping goal. Nearing the end of the first period of extra time, Knaphill produced more pressure and determination in their play that started to show signs of in the latter stages of normal time.

In the 19th minute of the extra half hour, Knaphill struck with perfection. Matt Powell’s pounding shot was

blocked, the ball came out to Alex Lumley who drove the ball past several players and into the far corner of goal to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. With just five minutes of extra time remaining, Ian Messenger was unable to clear the ball up field cleanly, which ended up leading to James Philips having plenty of space to steer home Dorking’s equaliser for what was to be the 2-2 final score, and bring the two Clubs together again for the replay on Tuesday night at Redding Way.

Knaphill: Allen, Acton (Postance 72mins), Taylor, Udaw (Thorogood 62mins), Doble, Messenger, Lumley, Daltrey (Kellett-Smith 105mins), Watkins, Powell, Todd.

Goals: Todd 90+1, Lumley 109mins.

IN REsERVEReserve Team notes from the Suburban Leaguewith Dave Kelly and Kevin Arnold.

On Tuesday 15th October we travelled to Cobham with the following squad:- O’Donnell, Power, Davis, Sales, Mason, Scannella, Dennison, Wilson, Todd, Clark, Postance. Subs Ruggles, Kwenda. A far better team performance from us resulted in a 5-2 win with Clark 2, Postance 2 and Todd scoring. This was also achieved without a recognised goalkeeper. Both Wilson and Todd performed well on debut, with Todd’s evening coming to an early end with him being sent off for two yellow cards. Also I can announce the return of Kevin Arnold as Coach for the Reserves.

On Saturday we played at home to Hanworth Villa with the following squad:- Smyrk, Power, Davis, Sales, Mason, Dennison, Ruggles, Coates, Edwards, Murray, Franchino. Subs Littlemore, Scannella. This was a game we should have won even with ten players unavailable through injury or away. Franchino and Littlemore were called up from the youth team and made impressive debuts. The game finished 3-3 with Franchino 2 and a Murray penalty.

Good luck to Ruggs and the 1st team tonight in their FA Vase replay against Dorking.

With three consecutive cup matches it was a relief to return to the ‘bread & butter’ of league football as the Young Knappers made the short trip to Mead Lane to play the reverse of the season’s opening fixture against Farnham Town. That first game has seen Farnham leave Redding Way with a 5-0 victory, every-one connected with Knaphill did not want to see a repeat of that result!

The opening exchanges between the two teams were very even on a very uneven pitch, for the first half an hour as neither side could take advantage. Knaphill’s defence was proving to be very resilient, although the threat to the Farnham goal was not great. In the 32nd minute Farnham gained a throw-in level with the Knaphill six yard box, the throw was flicked on at the near post and much to everyone’s amazement the ball gently trickled over the line at the far post. Ten minutes later saw a ball from the same direction flash across the face of the goal, missing everyone apart from Knaphill Captain Rob Litchfield who unfortunately deflected the ball into his own net.

Half time saw some direct talking in the Knaphill dressing room as a plan was hatched to get the Knappers back in the game. Within 5 minutes of the restart Rob Litchfield had to limp off being replaced by Jack Tucker. In the 57th minute Knaphill gained a free kick on the left just outside the box, Matt Stuart stepped up and beautifully guided the ball over the wall and past the static Farnham ‘keeper. Immediately Alfie Fairhall came on the replace the hardworking Harry Driscoll, but Farnham had been stung into action as 2 minutes after the Knaphill goal, Farnham hit the bar from a cross and a further 2 minutes later a through ball into the box saw the defence stand off the Farnham forward who had time to turn and fire past Tom Bains in the Knaphill goal.

Knaphill weren’t finished as Nico Aquino beat the offside trap and fire Knaphill back into the game in the 65th minute at 2-3. Four minutes later a Farnham free-kick was met with a looping headed that floated over Tom’s outstretched arms and just under the bar for a 4-2 lead. Knaphill are never beaten and had their own free-kick in the 81st minute which was met by substitute Nahuel Franchino who played a 1-2 with a Farnham defender before unleashing a fierce volley across the Farnham keeper for 3-4. However despite furious pressure from Knaphill the equaliser could not be found. Great performance, disappointing result.

The young Knappers have scheduled league games at Fleet Spurs on Monday 28th October KO 7.45pm and against Cove at Redding Way on Tuesday 5th November KO 7.30pm.
