FESTIVAL DATES SET APRIL 9-11

Redbud Entertainment News

Organizers of this year’s festival put an end

to rumors this week announcing the

Festival will remain scheduled for Friday,

April 9 through Sunday, April 11, 2021.

The venue has been redesigned and

updated to meet guidelines, and with all

Policies & Procedures being revised, there

is absolutely no reason to change the

dates again. Festival officials were just as

frustrated as so many when the decision to

postpone was made months ago amidst

the height of the coronavirus crisis. Several

dozen hard working and optimistic friends

and family have been giving the venue a

makeover, redesigning the spacing all the

events and parking lots. The overall size of

the Festival layout has gone from the

original 21-acre layout to now being

nearly 130 acres in size. This spacing out

of events due to Covid-19 and projected

festival growth will include a shuttle

system to assist attendees, staff and

volunteers from one place to another

within the facility.

With the ongoing vaccines being

administered and making it through the

holidays during the pandemic and tough

financial crisis, attitudes are finally

beginning to change for the better. The

light at the end of the tunnel is getting

brighter, as festival organizers have

remained positive, and continued to work

for nearly two years in efforts to bring this

Festival back another year at this new

venue.

After meeting with several other

organizers and event coordinators, our

policy and procedures have been revised

to include Covid-19 recommendations.

We received great feedback from others in

the exact same situation across the entire

south west region.

“We understand the importance of this whole thing and what it means for hundreds of people. The festival is necessary, as many claim it to be a definite step in the return to normalcy”, said Festival Organizer

Kevin Anderson.

Redesigning the festival layout, updating

CUSTOM RIDES ROLLING IN

Redbud Entertainment News

The 2nd Custom Car & Truck Show is a

unique gathering of a few dozen custom,

classic and antique vehicles from across

Oklahoma. We’ve talked with several local

and regional car clubs and organizations,

and everyone we talked with seems to

have developed strategies to deal with

Covid-19.

Car cruises are being organized which

include gatherings at a few of our

Sponsors’ locations. These beautiful works

of art will also be displayed at various

times at the Festival. Attendees will be able

to see upon entering the canyon how the

car show is setup in the shape of

Oklahoma, and from the sky in a hot air

balloon. In addition, attendees may vote

on their favorites, with winners receiving

prizes and awards at the Awards

Several improvements to the Redbud @

4M Farms venue. Tree damages from the

latest ice storm have been cleaned up. The

main stage is nearing completion as crews

have added a wide loading ramp behind

the stage and construction on the stage

privacy fence continues.

The Backstage areas and other wooded

areas are being cleared and groomed to

provide Performers and Attendees with a

safe, clean environment. The backstage

area now has ample space for several

performing acts to relax in park-like

scenery with park benches, walking trails

and several private areas. The Load-In

Load-Out area is now large enough to

accommodate full size semi-trucks and an

additional access road has been

developed to allow other authorized

Pilots and their crews, along with several

of the Taco Fiesta Food Vendors will also

be utilizing the access road used by the

Other improvements taking place are

groundskeeping, mowing, and

construction of a Concessions area and

the horseshoe pits for that tournament.

installation. Other construction projects

include installation of the Campground

COMING SOON...

PURPOSED re·pur·pose /rēˌpərpəs/

adapt for use in a different purpose.

Repurposing is the process by

which an object with one use

value is transformed or

redeployed as an object with an

alternative use value.

Redbud Entertainment and partners,

sponsors, affiliates, volunteers and staff

members believe in and therefore practice

Micro-Sustainability, which is centered

around small-scale environmental

measures that ultimately affect the

environment through a larger cumulative

impact.

THE FESTIVAL

The pandemic has prolonged the

organizational period of this Festival, as we

have had to postpone due to the

Coronavirus twice. The costs associated

with production have risen more than we

anticipated so we’ve chosen to use

repurposing as a way to offset certain

expenses. We can proudly announce a

savings of more than $11,500.00 on

production costs to effectively manage the

financial crisis brought on by the

pandemic.

Although we didn’t foresee this variation

in production style, we have repurposed

approximately 90% of all expense items.

We encourage others to find alternative

resources and purposes to things around

you which would help our environment

and your wallet!

THE LAND

The land itself consists of land which has

been farmed for decades and has already

been repurposed for other uses such as

ranching and natural resources it provides.

While we are repurposing an approximate

area of 100 acres for entertainment

purposes, the other acres are still being

farmed.

Since we are combining several different

events into one Festival, the land has

numerous repurposed uses such as the

parking lots. Owners of the property have

repurposed the land by providing guests

with a variety of events and entertainment

options, from hosting a Civil War

Reenactment to hosting a Hot Air Balloon

Festival.

THE TREES

During the Civil War Reenactments, the

trees at the venue have been repurposed,

utilizing this natural resource for wood to

cook with, to keep warm with and for the

purpose of having shelter during the cold

winter months. Festival organizers

repurposed the trees by coordinating the

events to use the trees for shade, scenic

backgrounds and as wind blocks for

festival attendees.

THE ROCKS

The Redbud @ 4M Farms has ample

natural resources including numerous

limestone and sandstone rocks, mostly

embedded into the hills and canyons.

We’ve repurposed dozens of the rocks

using them for tent weights, ground

markers, stage décor and for additional

support bracing for various areas.

THE WATER

Festival organizers used water from

drainage ditches and small ponds located

at the venue for mixing concrete whenever

it was called for, and for cleaning tools and

equipment during construction.

THE SUN

There are many uses for the sun, most of

which we have used. Installing Solar lights

to work during the nights has provided us

with plenty of extended periods of

productivity.

THE MAIN STAGE

The main stage’s wood frame, loading

ramp and stage floor have been

constructed using repurposed wood,

about 90% of all wood used for stage

construction. We used wood from the

second Balloon Festival stage and wood

gathered from several resources. Basically,

the main stage consists of hundreds of

pieces of scrap wood from about a dozen

people across Oklahoma.

The stage floor consists of rubber mats

that we repurposed from an old school

gymnasium floor destined for the dump,

and for padding under the rubber mats,

we repurposed carpet sample squares we

acquired from a Church. The stage truss

system and towers consist of repurposed

totes once used by farmers for fertilizer

containers and conduit repurposed from

old construction sites that had done

demolition. We used the solar lights for

constructing most of the stage during the

cooler nights last summer.

THE BAR

The Bar area is also constructed of

repurposed scrap plywood and wood

pallets. It is built so attendees have plenty

of space between them with the 6’ social

distancing recommendations.

We have repurposed old metal barrels we

acquired from a farmer that were once

used for their farm equipment. After

cutting out the tops of the barrels and

cleaning and painting them, we were able

to provide a dozen barrels for trash

receptacles at events.

The bench seating, the main stage seating,

the main Festival signs, the

main/production office, ticket offices,

temporary fencing, the fencing screens,

the stage towers/pillars, and the sand for

the Horseshoe Pits have all been

repurposed for the Festival. Approximately

85% of all of the paperwork including over

fifty forms, dozens of flyers and posters,

and our applications, memos, schedules,

and printing materials are repurposed. This photo shows several of the items we repurposed

during construction of the main stage. It includes

scrap wood, rubber mats, carpet samples, scaffolding,

and how we have utilized the land and trees to create

an area for outdoor entertainment using repurposing

methods.

WEATHER WARNINGS

Redbud Entertainment News

All events are outdoors, and we believe the

safety and security of all guests is of the

utmost importance. In the event of a

weather emergency or conditions pose a

threat to anyone, the festival may be forced

to suspend programming and/or evacuate

the festival grounds (to vehicle or campsite)

to provide instructions for guest safety.

Those instructions may be provided by audio

and/or video broadcast from the stage. In

addition, all Food Vendors will notify those in

their areas of the situation and assist with

instructions.

Every volunteer and staff member will

communicate with attendees, and venue

production team will convey warnings and

instructions through the festival website &

festival social media outlets. Updates and

further information such as resuming

programming, re-entry to the festival, etc.

will be provided in the same manner. Live

radar will periodically be projected onto the

venue big screens near the main stage.

The Festival Ticket Offices on the main entry

road is a command center for any weather

emergencies serving as a communications

center.

The Redbud @ 4M Farms utilizes a Color

Flag System to alert our attendees and all

others of the current weather conditions.

We will have flags placed at the main gate,

the main stage, the campgrounds area, RV

Parking area, and at the Ticket Offices

area.

TRAFFIC NOTE Redbud Entertainment News

During a recent Traffic meeting, we

discussed traffic leaving the venue, and

the effects on local residents. Upon exiting,

we are strongly encouraging our guests to

either turn right or left onto Highway 18

and to avoid going straight (west) on 6th

street. This will alleviate a lot of confusion

and bring down the noise and any dust

pollution. The road will essentially

NEVER GIVE UP!

Redbud Entertainment News

During the second Stillwater Balloon

Festival, we had several things that almost

had us canceling entirely. With only three

weeks to go before the Festival dates, the

landowner of the property on north

Perkins Road decided to change his mind

and backed out on our contracted lease

agreement.

We had already built the stage, ticket

office, fences were up, and everything was

setup. At this point, the balloon pilot we

had also been in contract with also

decided to back out. Pilot Tony Sandlin

from Fishers, Indiana cited the terrain at

the newly found venue was too rough to

participate.

With only two weeks to go before the

Festival gates were to open, we had no hot

air balloons coming! Worse than that, we

also did not have a venue secured. With

rainstorms rolling in one after another, it

would have been very easy to just give up.

But we did not give up at all, instead we

had emergency meetings to brainstorm,

share ideas and came up with a game plan

to save the Festival.

We continued to set up the event,

dismantling and then rebuilding the stage

and everything else. Luck was nowhere

near our side as the night before opening

day Stillwater received over 4 inches of

flooding rain which we began tending to

the morning of the first day. As time ticked

away, and gates opening at 4:00 pm we

acted swiftly. We dug ditches with shovels

to disperse the flood waters away, and

eventually the roadways were just mud but

they weren’t flood waters. Just before

noon, Carrier Ditching & Excavating

graciously delivered about 25 tons of

gravel, which family members quickly

bladed and graded, essentially building a

road in less than an hour.

As attendees began arriving, hundreds of

vehicles tested their driving skills, and

while the new inclined gravel roadway

wasn’t easily manageable, nearly all of the

attendees made it through this area that

was flooded hours before. Redbud

Entertainment did pull out 52 vehicles that

were off the road and stuck in mud,

including the balloon pilot’s van and

trailer!

A founding member of Redbud

Entertainment reached out to a friend, Wil

LaPointe, who at the time was in Iowa.

Once hearing of this, Wil LaPointe and his

wife loaded up and drove from Iowa to

Stillwater. Crowds of people cheered as

they drove into the Festival grounds.

Later that same day, over 775 attendees

were able to scratch Riding in a Hot Air

Balloon off their bucket lists, and over

4,100 people enjoyed this unique

gathering.

Wil LaPointe was invited to come back to

Oklahoma, where he once called home.

Thanks Wil, for saving the day! See you in

again this April!

HONOR THEIR SACRIFICE. EDUCATE

THEIR LEGACY.

Folds of Honor Foundation

In 2006, founder Major Dan Rooney was

returning home from his second tour in

Iraq as an F-16 fighter pilot in the

Oklahoma Air National Guard. When the

plane landed, the Captain made the

announcement that they were carrying the

remains an American hero onboard,

Corporal Brock Bucklin.

The Captain made a request that everyone

stay in their seats until the remains of

Corporal Brock Bucklin were de-boarded.

Major Rooney watched from his seat as

the Corporal’s twin brother walked

alongside the casket to his family,

including the Corporal’s child, Jacob.

Major Rooney was moved by this image,

thinking of his own family.

Major Rooney was surprised to see that

over half of the passengers had already

left their seats before they removed the

casket. Frustrated by this reaction, Rooney

decided he needed to do something to

pay proper tribute to service members and

their families.

One year later, Major Rooney established

the Folds of Honor Foundation. Since it’s

founding, this non-profit organization has

worked diligently to create educational

CHEERS! The tradition of

a champagne

toast after a hot

air balloon ride

dates back to

the 1780’s when

hot air balloons

first took flight.

The first manned hot air balloon flight

took place on November 21st, 1783 in

Paris, France and was flown by Jean-

François Pilâtre de Rozier, a French

chemistry and physics teacher, and

François Laurent d’Arlandes, a French

marquis and soldier.

In the 18th century, hot air ballooning

was a groundbreaking science.

Because most had never heard of or

seen a hot air balloon at the time, many

onlookers were afraid of the “dragon-

like” hot air balloons, and would often

attack balloons with pitchforks. Hot air

balloons were also unpopular with

farmers as they were not fond of

balloons landing in their fields and

disturbing their crops.

On one of the first successfully manned

balloon flights, the passengers carried

along a bottle of champagne to enjoy

during the flight, but instead of actually

drinking it, it was used as an offer of

goodwill to the farmers whose field

their balloon had landed in. The

champagne convinced the farmers that

the balloon was far from being a fierce

dragon and acted as an apology or

peace offering for disturbing the land

and animals grazing in the field. The

champagne smoothed things over, and

a tradition was born.

Today, upon landing, it remains a

tradition with balloonists’ around the

world to offer champagne to

passengers after a hot air balloon ride,

and recite the Balloonist’s Prayer:

“The winds have welcomed you with

softness. The sun has blessed you with

his warm hands. You have flown so well

and so high, that God has joined you in

your laughter and set you gently back

again into the loving arms of mother

earth.

TACO A taco (US: /ˈtɑːkoʊ/, UK: /ˈtækoʊ/,

Spanish: [ˈtako]) is a traditional

Mexican dish consisting of a small

hand-sized corn or wheat tortilla

topped with a filling. The tortilla is then

folded around the filling and eaten by

hand. A taco can be made with a

variety of fillings, including beef, pork,

chicken, seafood, beans, vegetables,

and cheese, allowing for great

versatility and variety. They are often

garnished with various condiments,

such as salsa, guacamole, or sour

cream, and vegetables, such as lettuce,

onion, tomatoes, and chiles. Tacos are

a common form of antojitos, or

Mexican street food, which have

spread around the world.

Type Finger food

Place of origin Mexico

Main ingredients Tortillas, meat,

vegetables, cheese

Tacos can be contrasted with similar

foods such as burritos, which are often

much larger and rolled rather than

folded; taquitos, which are rolled and

fried; or chalupas/tostadas, in which

the tortilla is fried before filling.

RIDE IN A BALLOON? Redbud Entertainment News

Hot Air Balloon Rides will be available at

the Festival. All Rides are upon the

discretion of the Balloon Pilots, and are

weather dependent. Rides are reasonably

priced and last about 12-15 minutes each,

depending on which Balloon Pilot is flying.

Balloon Rides may be purchased at the

Ticket Offices and near the Balloon

Field at the Balloon Rides Tent.

ALL PASSENGERS MUST SIGN A WAIVER FORM.

EVENT ATTENDANCE

2005 1,339 ATTENDEES

2018 4,119 ATTENDEES.

2021 6,500 ATTENDEES.

Approximately 6-10 Hot Air Balloons,

Pilots and Crews travel to Oklahoma from

Colorado, California, Indiana, Texas and

Kansas to participate and share their

aircraft with thousands of attendees.

We encourage the Folds of Honor

Foundation to bring ‘Dreamship’, a hot air

balloon created from the dreams of

children who have lost family members

who were serving in the military. For more

information about Dreamship, visit

www.dreamship.org.

THE FOLDS OF HONOR FOUNDATION

www.foldsofhonor.org

All participating balloons and pilots will be

highlighted in the Festival Programs and in

the Balloon Identification Guide.

Ballooning activities include Balloon

Tethered Rides, Glow Shows, Competition

Flights and Ascensions. All balloon

activities are provided at the pilot’s

discretions and the weather always

controls the amount of ballooning

activities which they provide. Organizers

will know the schedules of activities after

the early morning Pilot Meeting takes

place each day of the Festival weekend.

Flying conditions must be safe before any

rides or activities begin.

Festival organizers also track the local

weather and constantly notify all

attendees of any possible inclement

weather. This event takes place during

Oklahoma’s storm season, and a Flag

system is in* effect at the venue which

notifies everybody of the current weather

status. White flags indicate all clear, Yellow

flags indicate Caution, possible inclement

weather in the area, and Red flags, which

means Evacuate, that all events are

suspended during that time. These flags

are posted several locations at the venue

and may be seen from anywhere at the

Festival.

The Balloon Glow shows take place during

early morning pre-dawn times or during

www.foldsofhonor.org dusk, near each

evening’s sunset or twilight time. All

balloons have gas burners which are lit in

various sequencing patterns and usually

set to music and at the direction of a

‘Balloon Meister’.

Competition flights and events between

balloon pilots are usually during the

morning hours of Festival weekend. An

example of competition flight is when all

balloon pilots fly their aircraft into the

venue and drop bean bags on targets

located on the Festival grounds. Other

competitions are designed to test the

balloon pilot’s skills and highlight the

various things a hot air balloon can do.

All balloon passengers must sign a Waiver

Form prior to boarding the balloons The

Balloon Pilots also set the price for taking

a tethered balloon ride. There are no pre-

sales of balloon rides, passengers are

given rides based on a ‘first-come first-

served’ system.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL EVENT TIMES AND DATES

ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE AND A SCHEDULE OF

EVENTS IS CONSTANTLY UPDATED AND

PROVIDED AT THE FESTIVAL AND ONLINE AT

EASTERN REDBUDS

Celebrate the end of winter with an

explosion of pink blossoms.

Clusters of tiny magenta buds swell

into showy rosy pink flowers in early

spring before the leaves appear, with

the long-lasting blossoms putting on a

show for two to three weeks.

The buds appear to emerge right from

the bark of twigs and branches and

even on parts of the trunk, adorning

the entire tree with miniature clusters

of flowers.

The trunk of the redbud commonly

divides close to the ground, creating an

interesting multi-trunk shape with

graceful arched branches and a

rounded crown. Heart-shaped leaves 2

to 6 inches in length emerge a reddish

color, turning dark green in summer

and then a bright canary yellow in

autumn. The flowers also give rise to

clusters of beanlike pods that remain

on the tree into winter. The pea-sized blossoms of the eastern

redbud emerge in early spring before

the leaves arrive, covering the bare

branches in garlands of pink.

The Redbud tree was chosen as

the state tree of Oklahoma in

1937.
