Page 1: Redeemer by the Sea Lutheran Church, Kindergarten ......child of God and God’s family, the church, in managing all of life and life’s resources for God’s purposes.” We want

In 1998, our church body in convention

approved the adoption of 8 “Biblical

Stewardship Principles” based on this

definition: “Christian stewardship is

the free and joyous activity of the

child of God and God’s family, the

church, in managing all of life and

life’s resources for God’s purposes.”

We want to understand how we, as

Christian stewards can live generously …

for we represent and serve the Lord, who

Himself is supremely generous. In Acts

2, we see that believers in the early

church were generous as they were

moved by the Holy Spirit. Even those

who were poor were spurred on by

Christ’s sacrifice to generously share with

those who had need:

“And all who believed were together and

had all things in common. And they were

selling their possessions and belongings

and distributing the proceeds to all, as

any had need.” (Acts 2:44–45, ESV)

Is it possible for us, in 21st century

America, to express the same spirit of

generosity? The answer is yes … but …

The 21st century Church must recognize

some fundamental truths. Larry Ulrich,

writing on the topic of Encouraging

Generous Stewards suggests these

factors:

A Generous Culture Cultivates Generous Stewards.

Congregations need to model a generous attitude to their

members. If a congregation has a culture of “scarcity” members

can tend to adopt this attitude, and be to stingy with their

resources. Rather, congregations and members need to

recognize that with God all things are possible, and to share

generously recognizing that God supplies in abundance! (see

Luke 6:38).

Generous Leaders Cultivate Generous Stewards. In the

Bible, we see the leaders making their gifts first:

“Then the leaders of fathers’ houses made their freewill offerings,

as did also the leaders of the tribes, the commanders of

thousands and of hundreds, and the officers over the king’s

work.” (1 Chron. 29:6)

In generous churches, leaders are modeling generosity. The

greatest impact is experienced when members are shown how

acts of generosity result in changed lives.

Embrace the Ministry of Asking. This is best done when we

first learn what our members are passionate about. However,

when a ministry does ask for money, it is important that the

perspective is always what God wants for the giver, now what

the ministry wants or needs from the giver. Our Giving to His

Glory program should be seen as an opportunity to stir up

each other toward love and good works! (see Hebrews 10:24).

Generosity is Contagious. This is seen in the Bible in a

number of places, but especially when it came time to build the

Old Testament tabernacle (see Exodus 35 and 36). The

generosity of the people continued to grow and grow until

those who were in charge of the building of the tabernacle

came to Moses and said, “The people bring much more than

enough for doing the work that the Lord has commanded us to

do.” So Moses told the people to stop bringing gifts! It is so

important to notice that the people were not commanded to

bring these contributions; they were bringing gifts from their

generous hearts. The command was not to give, but to stop

giving… Imagine that!

Measuring Generosity. It has been said that “what’s important

gets measured, and what gets measured is important.”

Churches need to measure the giving of their members… and

this measurement needs to go beyond just the aggregate

giving numbers. If giving is a measure of a member’s spiritual

health, then neglecting to monitor someone’s giving is failing

to properly care for their spiritual well-being.

Celebrate Generosity. We regularly celebrate important

milestones in the life of our members – Baptism, Confirmation,

Weddings, Installations, etc. Yet, we can struggle at celebrating

generosity. It is important to celebrate when someone gives

for the first time. And it is also important to celebrate the

impact that generosity allows in and through our congregation.

So how are we doing at Redeemer by the Sea? Have you seen

our culture of generosity in the way we provide gifts and free

resources for our members? Do you sense that our

congregational leaders are generous givers? Have we helped

you experience with transparency – both our struggles and joys

in the areas of generosity? Are you spurred on to give to the

work of the Lord, encouraged by the

SUNDAY SCHOOL Rhonda Sutherlin Wow!! It has been an exciting year for Sunday School at

Redeemer by the Sea. We have seen a steady growth in the

number of children attending each week and also an

increased interest in volunteering in all areas of Sunday

School – thank you all so much.

Believe it or not, Christmas is just around the corner and

plans are already in the works to make the Children’s

Christmas Pageant a memorable one as we celebrate the

birth of our Savior. The children will be presenting the

Christmas Story on Saturday, December 20th

at 5:00 p.m. You

won’t want to miss this special presentation!!! I am busy

putting a team together, so if you would like to help out with

the performance in any way, please let me know.

Also, a special Children’s Service led by Melanie Burkholder

will be held during Advent, please see the church bulletin for

details.

If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions I am

always here to listen. Thanks so much & until next time –

keep serving the Lord. God bless. Rhonda Sutherlin

Christmas Pageants enable children

to learn, find and live in the true

meaning of Immanuel– God with us.

Perhaps you desire for your or your

neighbor’s child, grandchild, niece or

nephew to have this rich understanding and experience of

Christmas. Redeemer by the Sea Lutheran invites children 4

years old through the 5th grade to be a part of HARK, THE

HERALD ANGELS SING—A Children's Christmas Pageant on

Saturday, December 20 at 5 PM. Rehearsals are Saturdays,

December 6, 13 and 20 at 10-11:30 am. For more information

BIRTHDAY CELEBRANTS Jo Voertman

We celebrated the birthdays of Wilma Boggs, Jo Brandt, Erika

Burke, Ann Doering and Paul Lahr on FRIDAY, October 10 at

11:30 a.m. at the Argyle Steakhouse. We had a room all to

ourselves which is a win-win situation. We can visit as much as

we want and other diners are not disturbed. A selection of

desserts was offered to each celebrant and all of them were

yummy.

On Friday November 14 at 11:30 a.m. we are celebrating the

birthdays of Faye Bacon, Bill Barnes, Bonnie Bruner, and Mavis

and Dale Ward at Dini’s Bistro, 3290 Carlsbad Boulevard. There is

a parking lot behind the restaurant and if it

fills we have access to the Tamarack Beach

Resort underground parking. Lunches

range from eight ($8) to fifteen ($15).

In addition to your lunch, we suggest a

contribution of one dollar per celebrant

which will be given to Wounded Warriors

Everyone is welcome to join us but reservations are needed. To

make yours, contact Jo Voertman, 1-760-721-6674,

[email protected].

GENEROUS LIVING! Cont. Pastor Augie generosity of other congregation

members? Do you feel as though you are receiving

appropriate monitoring and feedback on your giving? And are

you able to celebrate the impact that your offerings and the

offerings of the others in our congregation are making – not

just to support our beautiful sanctuary and dedicated ministry

staff… but to reach beyond our walls with the gospel and love

of Jesus? I would love to hear from you on this! Please drop

me an email: [email protected] and share what

you see as strengths and/or areas for improvement!

Blessed to be a blessing,

SOUND IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE Dan Bitner

Pastor Augie, in his email letter dated October, 17th, reflected

back a few years when Redeemer was struggling to make

mortgage payments. God blessed us by a reduction of the

mortgage rate which allowed Redeemer to not just pay on

interest, but also on the principal. The relief this afforded, along

with other ministry efforts, brought us up to the level we are

today.

With the success our ministry is having, we must now move up

to the next level. This would be very pleasing to our Lord. It

doesn’t come without sacrifice by our loyal members. The

information on our pew card clearly indicates some of our

ministry endeavors that we are accomplishing. In this current

world we live, we as Christians must stand firm and seek to grow

our ministry.

This month is a very special time for Redeemer, in that our

members prayerfully consider their financial commitment to our

Lord and his work for this coming year. Our Stewardship theme

this year is; “Giving to His Glory.” This month, you are receiving

an individual pledge packet and there will be testimonials,

Sunday messages, and Bible studies reflecting upon your

individual blessings as well as Redeemer’s.

Regarding you pledge packet, you will see a new additional

category for giving: “Mortgage Reduction.” In an effort to

maintain our low mortgage interest rate, which is scheduled to

increase in January, we are being given the opportunity to make

special payments that will go directly to the mortgage principal

balance. In accounting terms, this allows our lender to keep our

rate low because they are still receiving increased payments

from us; however, the additional dollars we send are in effect

going to Redeemer in the form of decreased debt!

What are we asking you to do? Help Redeemer move to the

next level!

1. Pray! Ask God to guide your response.

2. Tithe. Continue and/or increase your giving to our general

fund which is critical to our ministry efforts.

3. Prayerfully consider making an additional commitment to

help Redeemer reduce our mortgage principal.

Nehemiah 10:39 states it clearly; “We will not neglect the house

of our God.” Be a part of helping Redeemer move to the next

level!

CONCORDIA HANDBELLS

After a brief respite we will be getting back to work addressing

the final two items of our plan. First, the design and remodel of

the Choir / Praise Band area to make it easier to change from

the Choir setting to Praise Band setup. We have contacted the

Choir Director at Community Lutheran, an LCMS Church in

Escondido that has the same ‘shared’ space issues that we have.

We will visit them with the intention of finding what they have

done that works and possibly things to avoid. The other item is

to review the possibility of adding a loop-system that transmits

the sound in a way compatible with modern hearing aids.

Wilson, Jim Mullen, Jo Voertman, Joe Flatt, Jordan Fletcher, Ken

Voertman, and Lyle Meyer.

Dear Pastor Augie, Rachelle, Gary, Paul, and all the fine folks at

Redeemer,

On behalf of the Concert Handbells of Concordia University

Irvine, I want to extend our sincere thanks for the opportunity to

participate in and contribute to worship of our Lord among you

on Oct. 5. You were most kind in communicating so efficiently,

promptly, and in a helpful spirit to make this happen so quickly

and thoughtfully.

It was a pleasure to get to know all of you and to work through

all the details. Pastor Augie was so thorough and

accommodating in exchanging ideas

and getting the word to appropriate

people, and Rachelle and Gary kindly

assured that communication was

effective. Your contemporary team and

organist were also cordial in working

together to assure good order.

Your people are unusually gracious and welcoming. We

enjoyed meeting several in person and were warmly greeted

and recognized by quite a few. It was great to see some of our

alumni and family friends as well.

It was also a pleasure to meet Paul at last. Thanks for instigating

this opportunity years ago; it can take a while sometimes but we

are glad it could happen.

May we meet again someday, perhaps for a concert if you like.

Your sanctuary is a very pleasing environment for music and

assembly.

God be with you all as you continue to minister to

the Carlsbad community.

God has entrusted to Pastor Augie one of the most precious of

assignments—the spiritual well-being

of His flock here at Redeemer. While

we individually look for ways to

encourage and affirm our Pastor

through the year, October is Clergy

Appreciation month and gives us the

opportunity to bring the Congregation

together in sending their message.

Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard

among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish

you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their

work. Live in peace with each other. (1 Thess. 5:12-13)

This year we again provided the Congregation a way to

individually express their support for Pastor Augie and Rachelle.

Kathy Seemann, who leads our LWML program, took the lead in

having postcard sized pages distributed for Members to write

their notes of appreciation. The pages were then

assembled into a spiral bound book that I’m sure

will be a keepsake and a positive reminder of the

role they both have here at Redeemer.

On Monday the 14th,

Kathy and I had the

pleasure of

delivering the binder

to Pastor Augie and Rachelle and

they were most appreciative. Pastor

Augie has made a difference in his

time here and it was fitting that

everyone was given the opportunity

to share their individual messages

of support for their work.

LWML Kathy Seemann

Greetings from the Choir Loft! As your Director of Choirs, I

wanted to remind you of some of the opportunities for you and

your family to listen to beautiful music here at Redeemer during

the next two months.

The Chancel Choir is working on Thanksgiving anthems and

music for the Christmas Season to share with you on Sundays,

Advent Wednesdays, and Christmas Eve. Here are some special

dates to mark on your calendar:

*Sunday, November 9, our special Men's Quintet will sing for

first service. They are sharing "Eternal Father Strong to Save"

for the Offertory. The Army/Navy Academy Band will be here to

play patriotic music for both services, along with a special color

guard. This should be a real treat for all of us, celebrating

Veteran's Day.

*Sunday, November 23, Chancel Choir will sing two special

Thanksgiving anthems featuring our choir and David Fennell on

trumpet.

*Wednesday, November 26, special music will be featured for

our Thanksgiving Eve Service.

*The Chancel Choir and soloists will be singing for our Advent

Services and Sunday services during November and December.

*On December 24, Christmas Eve, the Chancel Choir and

instrumentalists will perform "The Many Moods of Christmas,"

by Robert Shaw. We will sing a series of familiar carols

accompanied by piano and a string section.

LWML invites you to:

Deliver a few religious Christmas cards for our

holiday project for the convalescent home(s). Remember,

word is that residents are most appreciative of this effort.

Drop off the address of a military friend or family member

so that Carolyn Schmaltz can send them a beautiful and

thoughtful Thanksgiving or Christmas card.

Donate used hearing aids. A project of Carlsbad Kiwanis,

they help the audiology dept. of Rady's Children's Hospital.

Attend the next regular meeting on Tuesday, November 11.

We'll be assembling Christmas card packets AND serving

lunch to the pastors who are having their regular circuit

meeting at RBTS that day!
