Dear Friends:
500 years ago on October 31, Martin Luther nailed the 95 theses on the door of the Wittenberg Church and the Protestant Reformation began.
There were several key points to the Reformation.
1. Luther challenged the concept of Purgatory and indulgences. The Roman Catholic church
taught that Purgatory was a “hell-like” place where Christians went to before they got into heaven. There, their sins were “purged” so that they were righteous and could then be pure enough to get
into heaven. The church sold indulgences which could pay for your sins and get you into heaven quicker. Luther taught that God did not want our money, but true repentance and sorrow for the
sins we have committed. Also, Luther denied the existence of Purgatory. 2. Luther challenged the authority of the Pope. Christians were taught that the Pope was infallible and that all
Christians must blindly obey whatever the church teaches. Luther proclaimed that all theology must be in
harmony with God’s word. He also taught that Scripture must be interpreted using reason and logic, and that each individual must act in accordance with his own conscience.
3. Luther challenged the whole understanding of good works. Good works are not necessary for salvation. We are saved solely by the grace of God. However, true faith in God will result in good works being done in response
to the grace and love that Christians receive from God.
4. Luther talked about “the priesthood of all believers.” It is a misunderstood phrase. What Luther taught is that every profession is equal to that of being a priest. In Luther’s day it was thought that being a priest or a monk
was more pleasing to God than being a doctor, lawyer, or laborer. Almost 20% of Europeans were living in monasteries because they thought it would assure them of getting into heaven without having to suffer in
Purgatory. Luther taught that God was just as pleased with an honest, hard-working laborer as he was with a priest. Some people are called to be priests/pastors and some are called to be laborers, technicians, teachers
and other professions. God is pleased when through our work we serve other people and make the world a
better place. (God doesn’t like me best, because I’m a pastor).
The Lutheran Church today continues to be a church that stresses we are saved by grace alone, apart from good works,
yet we believe God calls each of us to serve God in the world and make this world a better place. The “Protestant work
ethic” comes out of the Lutheran understanding of work as an opportunity to serve God through serving other people in our occupations.
Lutherans continue to stress the importance of faith that is grounded in Scripture, but the Lutheran Church places
importance upon using reason and scholarship in understanding the Scripture.
The authority of the church lies in the local congregation. We agree to a common understanding of the Bible based
upon the historic Lutheran writings called: The Book of Concord. However, each congregation decides how to apply this
faith to their local context. Congregations also have the power to call pastors, they are not assigned by the larger church.
The Lutheran Church, like the Roman Catholic church is a sacramental church. We believe God acts through the
sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. In Holy Baptism, God comes to us through the water and God’s word to make us his children. Baptism is like a “spiritual adoption.” We become God’s through baptism. God acts!
Also in Holy Communion, God comes to us through the wine and bread. We receive Christ and with Christ we receive the promise of forgiveness and the promise of eternal life. Once again: God acts!
Reformation Celebrations
On Wednesday, October 18 at 7:30p.m. there will be a Reformation worship service at Christ Cathedral (formerly the
Crystal Cathedral) in Garden Grove. Bishop Andy Taylor will be one of the preachers at the service in addition to a Roman Catholic representative. Many of the abuses from Luther’s time have been corrected. In the year 2000 the
Roman Catholic church issued a joint statement with the Lutheran World Federation on Justification by Grace. We have learned to work together despite our differences.
Reformation Concert: Saturday October28 at 4p.m. There is more information in the newsletter, but this is a great
opportunity to hear inspiring music on our new organ. YOU WILL BE IMPRESSED! Invite your family, friends, and neighbors.
Blessings,
Pastor Brian
