aster and Christmas are the two cornerstone events in the church calendar. The celebration of Easter is a celebration of “the rest of the story.” As Christmas is the celebration of how God became a man and dwelt among us, Easter is the celebration of how Christ died for us and was raised again on the third day conquering sin and death and giving believers freedom from

the penalty, the power and ultimately, the presence of sin. The Bible says that when we trust in Christ as Savior and Lord of our lives, “old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV). Our lives begin to tell a new story as we walk in the Spirit and follow His will and His way.

In this month’s issue of Redefined, you’ll read many stories. You’ll read the story of Easter and how God loved us so much that even as Adam sinned in the Garden, God began His plan of redemption in Christ. You’ll read the stories of how the lives of people have been changed as a result of their faith in Christ. You’ll read stories of God’s grace, stories of answering God’s call to serve both locally and internationally. You’ll read the story of FBC’s partnership with a family who is sharing the gospel in Canada so that more life stories can be changed.

Read about the opportunities God is providing for you to continue your story of faith. We have continued weekly service and studies with a special week coming soon to celebrate Easter. Passion Week begins on March 29 and continues through April 5. We’ll also have a special series beginning at 5:00 pm in the Outreach Center on March 15 called Spiritual Disciplines.

As you read these articles, ask yourself, “What’s my story?” We encourage you to find a quiet place to sit, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy these stories. If you’d like to know how Christ can help change your story, we’d love to help you know how. Thank for allowing us to share these stories with you as we GATHER, GROW, GIVE and GO with you!

hen FBC opened its new Children’s Building on February 8, one chapter ended while another began. For fifty-seven years the Ray Building has been the Sunday School home for infants and children. While they, with great anticipation, went to their new rooms on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Children’s Building, their parents gathered nearby in the

former children’s rooms of the Ray Building for their own Sunday School classes, thus, beginning a new chapter for the Ray Building.

First Baptist has always placed a strong emphasis on studying the Word of God. On October 7, 1957, members of FBC started using their brand new educational facility, the Ray Building, named in memory of their former pastor, J. D. Ray. It was built at a cost of $193,000 and furnished at a cost of $14,500. When the Ray Building opened, all different ages, from bed babies to college students, used the building each Sunday. For years, the church family used the fellowship hall for midweek prayer meetings and church fellowships. Since 1967, the Ray Building housed the Creative Learning Center. The building has been used by thousands of people and has played an integral part in all the ministries of the church.

You might ask how the Ray building is being used today. Young adults and university students are using 12 of the rooms for Sunday School, leaving an additional 6 rooms for starting new adult classes in the future. The Starkville Chinese Church uses the Fellowship

Hall of the Ray Building for Friday night Bible study and for fellowship meals after their Friday night Bible studies and after Sunday morning worship. Also, the church archives, older library books, and discipleship materials will be moved to the second floor for nearby access.

Future plans for the building include changing the colors from preschool colors to colors more suitable for adults, refurbishing the restrooms, and, most importantly, starting new adult classes in the additional rooms.

Thanks to the sacrificial giving of FBC members in the past and it’s solid construction, the Ray Building will continue to serve FBC as a place where God’s Word can be studied for years to come.

s Easter quickly approaches, we are reminded how holy this time of year is. It is when our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ died on the cross. He gave His life so that we may have eternal life with Him. It is a somber thought, to think of how He suffered and died for us. But because of His suffering and death, we have hope and a reason for rejoicing.

Christian tradition calls the week leading up to Easter “Passion Week”. This is the week that Jesus spent in Jerusalem preceding His

death. The week begins with the Triumphal Entry. Jesus had been travelling, teaching and performing miracles. A crowd had gathered as He went and began to follow Him and His disciples towards Jerusalem.

Matthew gives us his account of the Triumphal Entry in chapter 21: “The disciples went and did just as Jesus directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt; then they laid their robes on them, and He sat on them. A very large crowd spread their robes on the road; others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them on the road. Then the crowds who went ahead of Him and those who followed kept shouting: ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in

the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’” (Matthew 21:6-9 HCSB)

The crowd not only gathered together to see and hear Jesus, but also to celebrate His arrival. They were so overwhelmed with joy that they couldn’t contain it. They most likely did not know why Jesus had come to Jerusalem, even though Jesus had already alluded to His death. They only knew that He had come and the city of Jerusalem needed to know their Savior had arrived. They prepared the way for Jesus into Jerusalem, just as we need to prepare our hearts for Easter.

At FBC, we celebrate Palm Sunday with a dramatic musical presentation by our Celebration Music Ministry.Last year, the music ministry presented the story of James, brother of Jesus, and the early church after the ascension of Christ. “The Passion Play last year helped me focus on the true meaning of Easter. The costumes really took me back to Jesus’ time,” says Kathy Jenkins. This year’s dramatic musical presentation will again focus on the early church. Entitled, No Outcasts, the early church learns that there are no orphans with God.

Passion Week at FBC Starkville continues with a special Midweek Service on Wednesday evening. During this service, we will observe the Lord’s Supper. It is a time to remember the Passover Supper that Jesus shared with his disciples and also to remember His sacrifice on the cross. JoLee Clark says, “The Lord’s Supper is a physical representation of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. He commands us to do this in remembrance of Him and the Lord’s Supper is a great way to remember what Easter is all about.”

The Friday before Easter, the churches in the Starkville community will host the “Stations of the Cross” event. During this event, local churches present different Scripture passages detailing the events of Passion Week. We will again join together as a community this year to hear the story of Jesus’ journey to the cross. It is a wonderful way to reflect on Jesus’ last moments on this Earth, as He suffered through a trial, bearing the cross, and then being crucified.

Finally, Passion Week finishes with worship on Easter Sunday morning. Senior Pastor Chip will bring a message and we’ll celebrate the resurrection of our Lord as a church family.

We invite you to join us for each of these events as we gather together to prepare our hearts for the arrival of our Savior and to celebrate His gift of Eternal Life.

or many, the word discipline has a negative connotation. We think of rules, boundaries, restrictions, and even punishment as discipline. In fact, one of the primary definitions of discipline is the practice of training people to obey rules, using punishment to correct

disobedience. However, another definition reminds us that discipline and disciple come from the same root word: discipline is systematic instruction intended to train a person, sometimes literally called a disciple. To excel in anything in life discipline is required. This is true for athletes, musicians, plumbers, accountants, and disciples of Jesus.

So the practice of Christian spiritual discipline is undertaken by a disciple of Christ (or a follower of the Way) to gain spiritual growth and maturity. Many times, the metaphor of walking a path is used to explain this idea. In his letter to the Galatians, Paul wrote:

SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINESW h a t a re t h e y a n d w h y s h o u l d I p r a c t i c e t h e m ?

Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

The practice of spiritual disciplines will produce the good things that are the fruits of the Spirit as we walk or follow the Way. Jay Adams wrote, “The word discipline has disappeared from our minds, our mouths, our pulpits and our culture. We hardly know what discipline means in modern American society. And yet, there is no other way to attain godliness; discipline is the path to godliness.”

Various disciplines have been identified, but a certain core group are constantly included. We will study five of these in our next Sunday night series beginning on March 15 at 5:00 pm in the Outreach Center. These are Bible Study, Prayer, Fasting, Worship and Fellowship. Other disciplines include Evangelism, Service, Stewardship, Journaling, Silence and Solitude. Solitude is defined as the spiritual discipline of voluntarily and temporarily withdrawing to privacy for spiritual purposes. In her book Finding Focus in a Whirlwind World, Jean Fleming observed, “We live in a noisy, busy world… We have become a people with an aversion to quiet and an uneasiness with being alone.”

Can you envision yourself five years from now? Financial guru Dave Ramsey often encourages his audience to make decisions now that will be a benefit in five years, whether that is an educational decision, financial or in some other area. What will your spiritual life consist of in five years? Will you find yourself in the same place or will you have deepened your walk with the Lord? The writer of Hebrews exhorts us, “In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” (Heb 5:12-14) Make decisions now to participate in the Spiritual Discipline study and let’s grow in the Lord together!

ave you ever found yourself in the midst of the Easter season with the church services, passion plays, egg hunts, gift baskets, and bright pastel colors and asked, "How did we get here?" Why is Easter even on the calendar to begin with? Why should I care about this day? To answer this question we have to go back to the story of creation and a garden.

Easter is a story that begins with an eternally righteous, just, and loving God. Before anything existed, He was there. The Bible begins by saying, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). He alone is God, the only God, dwelling for all eternity in three persons—God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God, being three-in-One, dwelt in the most perfect union within himself, a love relationship beyond what our minds can grasp.

Out of this love, he created all things uniquely according to their kinds (Genesis 1:25): the universe, earth, sky, wind, weather, grass, animals, stars, water, food, plants, trees.

“Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. … So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:26, 27).

He created Adam first, then fashioned Eve and gave her to Adam as his wife. This was the first marriage ever created and it was perfect. No sin. No disease. No divorce. No death. They had a perfect relationship with God, just as He created it to be.

ALLI GRACE'S TESTIMONYI was saved when I was six years old. I

remember being so excited to be a member

of the family of God that I was jumping up

and down on the bed in our house in Costa

Rica. Since then, God has definitely been

moving in my life. The biggest struggle

that God has been helping me overcome is

worrying. Even though I still worry (a lot),

God has been showing me through different

circumstances that He is ultimately in

control and that I should trust Him because

He can see the big picture, and I can’t.

"But sin cut the cord of humanity’s lifeGenesis 3, Adam and Eve believed the lieThe lie that to this day is still robbing you and IHere are the lies:That we are our own purposeThat life exists only on this surfaceThat love, honor, glory, that we deserve itYou see, we still listen to the serpentThe enemy knows you better than you know yourselfHe hates you, he wants to choke out your breathStop your heart like cardiac arrestRuin you name, your family, your life until there isn’t anything left..." (Raging Strong by Nate Calvin and Isaac Wimberley)

These lyrics from the song Raging Strong describe how sin entered the world. In Genesis 3, Satan appears in the garden in the form of a snake and tempts Eve to disobey God’s

Page 11: Redefined: FBC Starkville March 2015

command to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (3:1-5). She was deceived by him and ate of the tree and gave to Adam and he also ate. At this moment through Adam sin entered the world. God’s perfect creation was corrupted and this sin is why our relationship with God has been broken. Because of this moment in time the shock waves are felt even to this day and we are all born as sinners with a nature that is in total rebellion towards God. “Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.” (Romans 5:12) Sin’s entrance brought death to all people. “For the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) Because God is holy, perfectly good and righteous, our sin eternally separates us from Him and we deserve nothing but eternal punishment and wrath in hell.

The only way we can ever have a restored relationship with him is if we are perfect. Jesus said that we must be perfect, because God is perfect (Matthew 5:48). Since perfection is something that we can never attain, and righteousness is something that we can never earn, we can never be good enough with our church attendance, reading our Bible every day, being well-mannered, giving to charity, or serving at a homeless shelter. These are good things but they are not enough to save you. No matter how good we think we are, we are still sinners and our sin demands punishment.

Therefore, we have a problem. Left to ourselves, we can never do anything to have a right relationship with God.

However, there is Good News because God doesn’t leave us here. That Good News was made complete on Easter through the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

WHY JESUS?

" But sin set in motion God’s redemptive planFor God so loved the world that He would send His son to manTo rescue, to redeem, to reconcile all thingsAnd it was in this God-man, that the Father’s fullness was pleased to dwellAnd Christ was sent on mission to conquer hell He would take the sin of the

DOMINIQUE BELCHER'STESTIMONYI'm 23 years old and I'm from Ocean Springs, MS. I grew up in a non-Christian household where church was encouraged by my mother but never was lived out inside my home. Because of this I never had a standard to live by other than to be what I thought was a pretty good person compared to everyone else. My life up until about a year and a half ago was defined by money, girls, overall achievement, and friends. I put all my confidence in all these things and let all of it define who I was as a person. I couldn't be real because I had all of these influences shaping who I was. I did alot of regretful things throughout my first couple years of college but I kept a very good image and nobody knew what was really going on inside. It's hard to just put in writing how my life was before Christ but I was a deeply troubled person before I came to know the Lord. My life changed when I finally gave my life to Christ on June 16, 2013. Since then, I have gone through many ups and downs and have had to learn so much. I've even gone through stages of doubting my own salvation that seemed so profound at first. Overall, I've continued in the fight and have continued to have a good leaders to talk to about my struggles, and I have good community of other believers in my circle. I struggle all the time but I continue to try and grow each day and learn how to walk in Him.

world and bear it as His ownThe wrath that His children deserved was transferred to Him aloneAnd like a lamb led to slaughter, our savior didn’t make a soundAnd with His arms outstretched He hung, blood and water flowing downWith my finite mind, it just doesn’t make any senseThat He would get my sin, and I get His righteousness..."(Raging Strong by Nate Calvin and Isaac Wimberley)

God sent his only Son into the world and took on our flesh and human nature. God became like us and dwelt among us through Jesus (John 1:14). Jesus was born of a virgin, “being born in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:7). Jesus was perfectly God and perfectly Man. He lived a life that was completely obedient to God, something which we could never do in our sinful nature. He did not come to remove the law that God had given us, but came to fulfill it for us (Matthew 5:17).

This perfect, spotless Son of God laid down his life for you and me. He gave himself up for us as a sacrifice in our place and took all our punishment for sin on himself by being nailed to a cross. He died a death that was meant for you and me (Matthew 27).

All of the wrath of God, which we deserved because of our sin, was placed on Jesus. On Good Friday, the perfect Son of God died, and because of his death, our debt is paid. And now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).

He died to save us. He died to forgive us. This is how much God radically loves you.“But God demonstrates his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

" And so my King, He was put in a graveNot breathing, His mother weeping, the pre-destined dying day But three days later the stone had been rolled awayAnd truth be told, death couldn’t hold, the enemy couldn’t keep Him in that graveOur Savior is no longer deadThat serpent bruised His heal while Christ’s foot was smashing His head

Page 12: Redefined: FBC Starkville March 2015

And our fear and insecurities, those things have been put to bedWe live the life that Christ provides through His dying breathHe is risen from the graveAnd God has given Him a nameA name that is worthy to be praisedA name that will forever be proclaimedThe only name that savesJesusJesus, God’s only son..."(Raging Strong by Nate Calvin and Isaac Wimberley)

But Jesus didn’t stay dead. Easter is the day Jesus rose in triumphal victory over death to make us alive in him! The grave has no power over our God! By his resurrected life, we can have new life in Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:17). He has destroyed sin and death once and for all and claims eternal victory over the devil and one day will return to destroy Satan forever (Revelation 20:10). May we never just celebrate Easter once a year, but celebrate every day because His life, death and resurrection has opened up a way for our relationship to be restored with God.

WHY ME?

Knowing what Christ has done how do we respond to this good news? He has offered the free gift of eternal salvation and it is to be received in faith, only by God’s grace. We cannot earn this gift, but God freely gives it to us in Christ. Because our hearts are blinded by

HOW CAN MY STORY CHANGE?Throughout these pages, you've read the stories of lives being changed through the power of Jesus Christ. Praise God that our testimonies give an example that no one is too sinful or too broken to be covered by God’s saving grace, and no one can ever be good enough to save themselves. No matter how you grew up or where your life is at this moment, we are all in desperate need of the redemption that is found only through faith in Christ. Jesus Christ has offered everyone an invitation to follow him by receiving his free gift of salvation in faith. If you have questions about what it means to know Christ as your Lord and Savior, or would like help as you seek to follow him, please contact us at, 662-323-5633 or you can email Nathan Taylor at [email protected] or any of the staff. We would love to talk with you!

sin, we do not seek him on our own (Romans 3:10-11). He is the one who seeks us and opens our eyes to the beauty of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4-6).

Paul wrote that we “are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith” (Romans 3:24-25). This means that through God's grace (or "unmerited favor") we can receive salvation, a gift we do not deserve. It is by His grace that we can place our trust in Jesus’ death and resurrection alone to save us. When we receive Christ, he puts his very own righteousness in us, making us justified (not guilty of our sin) in the presence of God, and through that we can have a right relationship with Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

“For by grace you are saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) We must receive his free gift of salvation in faith. Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

This is the gospel—the good news of Jesus Christ! How do we receive this free gift of salvation in Christ? Jesus said, that we must “repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. … For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:9,13) To trust in Jesus, we must first acknowledge that we are a sinful person who is in desperate need of His salvation.

In faith, we must come before God and surrender our lives completely to Him, turning from our sinful ways and receiving his forgiveness for our sin. We trust in His resurrected life to give us new life in Him. And as we trust in Jesus, we follow him in obedience as Lord and Savior over our lives.

When we place our trust in Christ, he saves us forever and gives us eternal life in the presence of God, enjoying and glorifying him forever! This is why we celebrate Easter!

TOMMY BOREN'S TESTIMONYI was saved in elementary school, and it was genuine. However, throughout my teenage years and my 20’s, I gave into many of the temptations that this world deems as mainstream in order to “blend in”. There was a definite fracture in my relationship with God.

With the birth of our son Ty in 2001, Jennifer and I were confronted with the realization that our child needed immediate heart surgery. Knowing there was nothing that I could do in my own power to save him made me realize how much I truly needed God to take control. While this one event didn’t repair all of the damage I had done over the years, it definitely got my attention. I didn’t experience an overnight transformation. It’s been gradual and there is still a long way to go. I’ve found there are still consequences for years of sin, but I’ve realized that this is now part of my story and I don’t need to sugar coat it. People who are in the midst of similar struggles need to know that there’s still hope. I’m proof of God’s grace.

RENEE YOUNG'S TESTIMONYBeginning at age seven, my mom dragged me and my younger sister to church because that is what a mom is “supposed” to do. To make sure they grow up "proper and all". Well, that is what my mom did, but my dad had no part in my “growing up in the church.”

I went through the motions: owned a bible, memorized some verses, was involved in youth group, got baptized, knew how to pray, and didn’t do anything too insane to raise any questions. I was a “good kid;” however, as I matured through middle and high school, I found other things that were more interesting to me at the time. My identity was found in boyfriends, athletics, academics, and a hunger for being the best at everything. Without recognizing it, God was replaced. Though a shift had taken place, I still went to church, however I wasn't part of the church.

I tried to find love and acceptance in many wrong places in high school and college. I slipped farther and farther away from purity guardrails that were in place, and willingly walked down the path of impurity. Knowing this was sin, I lived a comfortable double-life, transitioning between the Jesus-facade and the self-seeker. I had never been so empty, and I knew exactly where to go to get help—Jesus, but I did not have the slightest clue of how to approach Him to forgive me.

My teammate, Loren Bruce Long, actively lived out what it means to be a Christ-follower. She showed me how to have a quiet time, how to study the Bible, and what it really looked like to be a Christ-follower. She did all of this despite me being a horrible friend to her. I hit rock bottom in the fall of 2011. I was growing in my knowledge and love for the Lord; consequently, many of my “friends” deserted me. I had to make a decision: abandon Christ or give up control of my life and submit to Him. Feeling absolutely alone and afraid, I chose the latter and cried out for his forgiveness. He called me out of darkness in March of 2012, and I followed through with believer’s baptism in August of 2012.

Since then, I have seen Christ grow my love for Him. I have seen Him place godly friends in my life to encourage me. I have been reminded of His faithfulness and how He is the only one capable of changing

hearts. I have seen how He can fully restore the messiest of lives. I have seen God provide a husband in Mark who desires to lead me as Christ leads his Church. I have seen how God, in the most unlikely of ways, can use all the junk I went through for His glory. I have seen how comforting sharing my testimony can be to other people struggling with the same short comings. I have seen myself be made new. No longer am I just going to church, but I get to be the Church.

MARK YOUNG'S TESTIMONYMy story is one that most Christians would consider “typical.” But I can assure you, nothing about Christ saving me from death and making me alive in him is “typical.” I was raised in a home where my Dad was a worship minister and my mom was the church pianist. I was raised in the church and was there any time the doors were open. I grew up learning about Jesus from my family and church as long as I can remember.

I am the youngest of five kids and we all grew up trusting in Jesus at a young age. When I was 6 years old, I was having a conversation with my mom on the couch in our living room in Plaistow, New Hampshire. Even as a little boy, God was calling me to himself. This is only by his grace upon my life. Even though I was six, still, I was born a sinner and needed Jesus. After our conversation, I wanted to receive Christ as my Lord and Savior. On my knees huddled over the couch, using my faithful mom to lead me to Jesus, God saved my life.

Since that day, I have steadily grown up into my salvation, learning what it means to know Christ and follow him. I was baptized a couple years later as an 8 year old to publicly show I was identifying myself as a Christ-follower. As I grew up into young adulthood, I have learned that Christ didn’t just save me from sin as a young kid before I knew him. But rather, his blood on the cross covers my sin every day as I know him. His blood will cover my sin for eternity. My salvation was not a one and done thing. Rather, Christ is the one that is keeping me and continually covering my sin even to this day. Through the years, it was easy for me to get caught up in the pride of looking like a really good Christian kid. Christ covered that. It was easy for me to fall to the temptation of lust even after being a believer. Christ has forgiven me for all of it. His redemption is set in stone over my life. No matter what sin causes me to stumble today, God continually sees me as his holy, blameless, chosen and adopted son. This is glorious grace!

I have been so blessed for God to give me such a wonderful, God-fearing wife to help me grow in Christ. Renee has been nothing short of a picture of God’s grace on my life as she has taught me the unconditional love and forgiveness of God. She is such a blessing and unbelievable helper to have as we seek to serve the Lord together. We have only been married for about a year, but God has taught me the incredible picture of the gospel—I am to love, serve and pursue my wife, just as Christ does to me.

For God to call me to himself and save me from sin as a young boy is only by his grace in Christ over my life. I need Jesus just as much today as a 22 year old man as I did when I first believed as a 6 year old boy.

t FBC Starkville, our Mission Statement highlights the four important components of being a plugged-in member of the body of Christ: Gather, Grow, Give and Go. One of those attributes is the giving of ourselves in ministry and service to our church. In January, Pastor Chip led us through the Church: Redefined sermon series. He highlighted the Give section of our Mission Statement as the third installment. He explained that from the earliest example of the first

church that we see outlined in Acts, God’s plan for His people has always been for us to give ourselves in ministry through the local church. Ultimately, we give ourselves as a way of worshiping and obeying God, and as we obey in this manner, we are able to reach out to our community in order to expose more people to God’s love and His Gospel.

He shared with us from 1 Corinthians 12, which says, “Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different ministries, but the same Lord. And there are different activities, but the same God activates each gift in each person” (1 Cor. 12:4-6 HCSB). In other words, God has given each of us unique abilities and strengths and passions, and He has placed us all together so that in working as one body, we can all contribute and further His purpose for us, as individuals, and for our church. Pastor Chip spent much of that

HOW CAN I SERVE AT FBCSTARKVILLE?If you would like more information on how to get involved visit the Welcome Desk on a Sunday morning or contact Emily Washburn at (662) 323-5633 or email her at [email protected].

sermon emphasizing the idea that everyone has something to offer and that no job is small or insignificant. We were then asked to prayerfully and sacrificially complete our Give Cards and commit ourselves to the service of God within our church. There were many areas of ministry available including the Guest Services Ministry, the Preschool Nursery Rotation Ministry, and the Media Team, whose job it is to compile this publication each month – truly an area for every member of every age and every skill-set.

As I sat and prayed over my own card, I felt led to join the Media Team because of my love of all things writing and editing. I was so excited to finally be a member of a church where my particular set of God-bestowed gifts could be of use. Since joining this team of individuals, I have been able to put my particular skills to use in a way that is productive and meaningful. I have felt God move in my own heart through this, as I feel more connected to our body of believers through reading over their stories closely and intentionally.

Many others committed to service in our church on that Sunday and have begun to follow through with those promises. One such individual is Janna Flint who committed her time to our Guest Services Ministry Team. Janna says she joined this ministry because she really enjoys meeting people. She also hopes to encourage newcomers to feel at home and at ease, just as the greeters did for her and her family when they first visited in July 2014. Janna just recently served for her first time in this area, and she was able to work at the Welcome Desk in the new Children’s Building, which she says was a great experience. To those thinking of joining this ministry, Janna says, “Given we don’t know what is going on in everyone’s life that enters the church doors, a smiling face, a handshake, and an encouraging word can lift a person’s spirits and get him or her in a good frame of mind to worship the Lord.”

Another member of our church, Will Carter, recently joined our Celebration Choir. Of his experience in choir, Will says he has been interested in being a part of the choir for a while now, but with such a demanding work schedule, he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to fit it all in, but he has discovered that the commitment is very manageable. Since joining the Celebration Choir, Will says, “Worship is an important part of our relationship with God, and I feel privileged to be a part of the worship team.” He also says that this has “been a good way to meet other church members that [he has] otherwise not been acquainted with” and encourages others considering joining the choir to do so.

The great part of this service initiative is that you did not have to be present on “Give Sunday” in order to start serving within FBC Starkville. If you aren’t currently plugged in to a service area within our church, I urge you to find a place where you can put your talents to use – there really is somewhere for everyone, and it’s what God expects of us as His children. The best part is, you will receive so many more blessings through your service and obedience than you can imagine!

anvas Church of Victoria, British Columbia, is one of the North American mission churches that FBC supports with prayer, finances, and mission teams. Ashley and April Austin moved their family from Biloxi to Victoria two

years with the intention of planting a church on Vancouver Island.

The Austins have taken an organic approach to reaching out to their neighbors. While participating in youth sports activities, attending community functions, and visiting with people in local parks and venues, they have taken these opportunities to develop friendships and engage them about spiritual issues.

Mission teams have also played a large part in the outreach to their community. Through events such as sports camps, family

festivals, cookouts, and a couple’s conference, God has given the Canvas Church many different people with which to interact and get to know.

During Spring Break, FBC will send a second team to facilitate a basketball camp for the community around Canvas Church. The team will conduct a week-long camp in the evenings and two one-time camps in the morning.

Last year, the young church body was only meeting on a monthly basis, but they began having weekly gatherings in the fall. Recently, they had 90 people present for their Sunday worship service. God is moving and doing great things through

the Austin family and Canvas Church.

Continue to pray for Ashley and April as well as their three sons, Max, Mitchell, and Andrew.

PRAYER REQUESTS FROM ASHLEY:We are currently searching for a student pastor and children

pastor. Join us in asking the Father to call His person to come alongside the ministry God is doing through Canvas.

Continue to intercede for our family! Ask the Father to continue to give us spiritual vitality, health, wisdom, and protection as we join God in what He is doing in our community! Join us in also asking the Lord for favor as we go through the permanent residence process with the Canadian government. We are seeking permanent resident status in Canada. This is a long drawn out process. Thank you for bringing all five of us by name before the Throne of Grace!

tarkville and First Baptist Church have both been home to Dot Edwards since 1952. She and her husband Ed moved here from Holly Springs, thinking the university would be a great place for the higher education of their two boys. This was most important to the parents who did not

have the opportunity to further their own education. Going even further back to her roots,

Dot said a few weeks ago, laughing, “I’ve given the Lord trouble since the day I was born!” When only a tiny babe, Dot was stricken with whooping cough. All hope was lost and her aunt had sewn a black dress for her mother to wear at the baby’s funeral. But the family prayed, and God’s healing hand restored her to health.

She says of her upbringing, “I’m glad I was born into a poor, humble, country family, God-fearing with roots that ran deep in Christian convictions. Those who have not heard a rooster crow in the early morn, watched a newborn calf waddle on wobbly legs and then get its footing and kick up its heels in playful glee, or heard the beautiful song of a whippoorwill at eventide – have not experienced one of God’s greatest gifts to man.” Dot remembers her mother saying that even though they were poor, they always managed to have biscuits at breakfast except for a single morning during the Depression. Her father was “the finest man” she had ever known.

Dot accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at age twelve. She remembers the invitation hymn being Only Trust Him, and says, “No one urged or coerced me. I just knew in my heart I needed a Savior, and it was for me He died that my sins might be forgiven.”At age sixteen, she and Ed Edwards fell in love and married after almost six months of dating. Seven days after they married, Ed left for basic training at Camp Shelby. An earlier back injury kept him away from combat (this was 1943). In time two redheaded boys were added to the family. Ed was an automobile repair man and eventually opened

his own business, Ed’s Auto Shop. When Ed closed the shop, they sold that property to Mississippi State. Dot has a brick and a screw from the building, now gone.

Dot began journaling a long time before our pastor recommend-ed it. She says it is therapy for her. In 1993 a compilation of stories, essays, and poems became a book. The title is Tracks on My Heart, from a poem by the same name; it’s a testament of love for her hus-band Ed on the occasion of their fiftieth wedding anniversary. (Al-ways humble about her talents, she specifically wanted to thank Jen-ny Reed and Verla Pepper for helping her with the book.))

Over the years at First Baptist, Dot has served in the nursery, Junior Sunday School class, Intermediate Training Union group, Act-eens, and WMU. She’s a active member of the Joyful Noisemakers, where, defying her small stature, she plays a big drum! Just a few weeks ago, she opened her home to a group of D-Now teenage boys for the first time (and loved it)! The BSU at the university has a small group of college kids who have “adopted” her; they visit her once a week, play board games, and have prayer together.

Dot drives a big red truck to church every Sunday and Wednes-day, sometimes more often. She is a mem-ber of the Grace/Ruth Sunday School class (taught by Marjorie Usher). She says, “The church is my life, and I just love life!” Each morning Dot sits at the breakfast table with her Bible, paper and pen, and this poem she wrote:

“God the Father, God the Son,Guide me till this day is done. And as I sleep the night away,Keep me safe, dear Lord, I pray.Though my body bespeaks my age,Keep me moving with joy, not rage.I voice my praise, dear Lord above,For saving grace and abiding love.”

Today, Dot uses her computer for email and the occasional game. She makes her own Christmas cards each year. This is what she says about her future: “When the good Lord decides it’s time for me to depart this old world, I guess if there is one thing I’d like folks to remember about me, it is that I loved people and sought to serve my Lord by serving others.”
