Since its start, PPHI Sindh has grown enormously and has broadened its scope from 6/6 essential primary health care services to 24/7 basic obstetric care services. More than 300 BHU Plus have been upgraded to 24/7 maternity centres. PPHI Sindh achieved this without any extra resources but with constant support from the Government of Sindh. The outcome of PPHI Sindh’s efforts can be seen in the progress the health indicators are making in the province.

Mr. Nazar Muhammad Memon, Member PPHI Sindh BoD, conducted a surprise visit of three health facilities of District Matiari where nutrition project services are integrated to identify and rehabilitate the malnourished children (WAST-ED-SAM). The purpose of the visit was to ensure that good quality healthcare services were being provided in the health

facilities.

Mr. Abdul Wahab Soomro, CEO PPHI Sindh along with Mr. Javaid Ahmed Abro, COO PPHI Sindh visited Kausar Hospital in Khairpur to oversee the quality of healthcare services provided at the facility.

PPHI Sindh's Quarterly Progress Meeting was held with COVID-19 SOPs to discuss the performance and devise strategies to enhance it. The meeting was chaired by PPHI Sindh's CEO, Mr. Abdul Wahab Soomro, and was attended by

the senior team at Head Office and all Regional Directors.

Mr. Abdul Wahab Soomro, CEO PPHI Sindh inaugurated BHU Plus Kot Mir Mohammad, Khairpur, that was recently renovated.

Dr. Zaib Dahar, Senior Technical Advisor, represented PPHI Sindh during a meeting with Sindh Health-care Commission on provisional licensing of PPHI Sindh's Health

Facilities.

Disinfection and decontamination activities were on with full vigour at different OTP sites all over PPHI Sindh HFs after a few positive Covid-19 cases surfaced.

PPHI Sindh organized a two-day Free Medical Camp at Umerkot where visitors were provided with free consultation, diagnosis & medicines.

UNICEF organized a TOT on Implementation of Baby Friendly Hospital initiative (BFHI) for all PPHI

master trainers at JPMC

Various kitchen garden initiatives have been undertaken by PPHI Sindh in District Matiari under the EU-PINS project. During the same project, commu-nities are also being sensitized and encouraged to develop their own kitchen

gardens.

PPHI Sindh and NICH started an initiative on Implementation of Neonatal Hypothyroidism screening in 14 Districts of Sindh. Since August, 207 health care providers have been trained through Zoom and Hands on

training.

Jannat Gul Government Hospital made an OPD record on 10 August 2020 by serving more than 600 patients in one day.The health facility has seen an ever increasing number in visiting patients since then.

PPHI Sindh celebrated the breast week by capacity building of HCP Across Sindh with special focus in Tharparkar to support Thar Foundation in screening through Mammography 500 suspected women.

In July 2020, after the torrential rains when the floods hit part of Sindh, PPHI Sindh organized more than 90 free medical camps to provide quality medical emergency services to the communities of the affected areas. PPHI Sindh’s healthcare workers provided free medical check ups and medicines to the people that visited. A total of 17,912 beneficiaries were provided medical relief at these camps.

Since its start, PPHI Sindh ensures provision of quality health services to the communities for reducing mater-nal mortality ratio. Through PPHI Sindh’s countless efforts the MNCH services trend is improving year by year. PPHI Sindh’s antenatal care services includes all basic measures required to prevent complications during and after delivery like physical examination, laboratory investigation, ultrasound, counselling, reporting, etc.

Similarly to maternal healthcare, PPHI Sindh’s second priority is to provide quality and timely neonatal health-care to improve the neonatal mortality rate in Sindh. The four essential services to save newborn babies that PPHI Sindh provides include essential newborn care, Helping Babies Breathe, Kangaroo Mother Care and use of Chlorhexidine.

PPHI Sindh has been providing Routine Family Plan-ning (FP) services through counselling of mothers in antenatal, postpartum, and lactating periods. FP train-ing is a regular feature of capacity building activities and is given to all healthcare providers. In this quarter, 298 male and female doctors and female paramedic staff have been trained in inserting IUCDs, PPIUCDs and implants.

The Family Planning Coverage provided during this quarter was 202,253 as compared to the same quarter of the last year during which Family Planning Coverage was 190,976.

The treatment for severely acute malnourished have medical complications of U5 children is provided F75 & F100 therapeutic milk for inpatient care implemented at Nutrition Stabilization Center (NSC). In order to strengthen routine immunization, PPHI Sindh collaborated with WHO and UNICEF to equip it self with ILRs, freezers, cold boxes and Standard Vaccine Carriers. PPHI Sindh didn’t just stop there but increased the reach of vaccination provision from Dadu and Khairpur to other districts as well where it started EPI centers on its health facilities to save as many lives of children and women as can be saved.

RESEARCH STUDIES

The Research Wing developed a proposal to conduct internal study on "Identifying factors for low turnover for NVDs and other MNCH related healthcare indicators in low performing BHU plus facilities in comparison to the good performing BHU plus health facilities in Sindh".

The study is in its implementation stage and will consist of Health Facility Assessment, Providers Knowl-edge and Skills Assessment along with Community based Cross Sectional Survey to find out the reasons/ factors from the end users for non/ underutilization of services from the nearest health facilities in the vicinity.

SOLARIZATION - STATUS OF SOLARIZED HF

PPHI Sindh aspires to provide quality health services to communities and in order to achieve this, it is important to main-tain an uninterrupted electricity supply for infection prevention, keeping the ice-lined refrigerators (ILRs) in working condition and for continuous provision of quality routine services. After the solarization of 623 HF’s the system is capable of self-generating electricity. The total installed system capacity is 2.471 Megawatts which produces completely pollution free 3.32 Gigawatts hour/year.

Solarization Phase I-V is in progress, on completion 21 more HF's/DO's will be added in the total. Also DHO SBA with help of Sindh Government has committed to provide 51 solar energy systems to PPHI Sindh after that the overall total will be 672 HF's approximately.

PPHI Sindh allocates a dedicated budget under the repair and renovation head every year which is utilized in upgrading the existing facilities and renovating the newly taken over ones to maintain the quality and provision of primary health facilities to the community.

Like all the major health organizations, PPHI Sindh also responded to the pandemic of Covid-19 with extreme and all the possible measures to keep providing quality primary health services to its communities. PPHI Sindh’s major activities during the reporting period July to September 2020 in response to COVID–19 in 24 districts of Sindh were as below:

Established 877 desks for screening at 1,238 PPHI Sindh health facilities.

Dedicated 871 staff members of PPHI Sindh for screening at centres of PPHI Sindh and seven staff for screening at screening desks Outreach of PPHI HFs.

Disinfected 1,002 HFs and 183 ambulances with chlorinated water.

Introduced physical distancing measures at 1,026 HFs to prevent spreading the virus.

Organised 577 Health Education Sessions by Social Organisers on loud speaker in the communi-ty to spread awareness on COVID-19 including hand washing techniques, social distancing and what to do if COVID-19 symptoms appear.

Assigned 95 staff members including 49 MOs, 35 paramedics and nine Auxiliary staff of PPHI Sindh at Government’s Quarantine and Isolation Centres
