HAPPY NEW YEAR

The following is a reprint of an article in a 1969 Gulf Coast Region Newsletter.

How is that for starting off the New Year? I have just obtained most of the Gulf Coast Re-gion archives. Event reports, newsletters back to 1964, along with financial records. At that time, I was a Captain in the Air Force with a more than full time job and numerous trips out of the country, which did not allow me to spend as much time on the Region as I do now. mit the situation is much better now. During that period, the Region not only held Solo II’s (Slaloms then) but also had a very active Rally Program, Regional Races and Drivers Schools. Membership for that year stood at 42! Like I said, we have come a long way since then. Our events are 5 times larger, membership is almost 4 times larger and growing. In fact, in a recent letter from Phil Mellor, our Area III Director, we had the highest growth in membership for all of SEDIV! An increase of 34 members for a 30.91% increase. SCCA has increased our sanction and in-surance fees for 2004. It was not much, $ .50 for each, which brings the total in fees that we have to pay per entrant up to $ 6.00. This leaves just $ 4.00 from a member entrant to apply to the tro-phies. We will continue to charge the same as last year for as long as we can. If our entries drop to a low level, we may have to bump up the entry fees. The largest increase in rates went to the Pro Rally which went from $ 8,250.00 to $ 12,000.00, next was an increase in hillclimbs of $ 500.00. Regional and National races had their Saction fees

increased, $ 50.00 and $ 100.00 respectively. I guess by now you would like an explana-tion of the Corry Race course shown above! This is the course that was used for the USRRC cham-pionship races back in the mid 60’s. Drivers from all parts of the US and overseas competed in these FIA sanctioned events. Ann and I have driven on this course both in drivers schools and Regional Races. It was a super course for an airport type event, with only minor standing water problems when it rained. Highway 98 now cuts right through where the course was then, and the Navy now has a shopping center and hospital in the same location. Kind of hard to have a race course co-located with a large hospital complex! What is new for 2004? When you come to registration for the event, there will be two lines, one for pre-registered and one for newbies that do not even know what class they are in. This should speed up registration so we can start earlier. Note, also, the new registration cut off time! Walt W. R.E.

GULF COAST REGION – SPORTS CAR CLUB OF AMERICA Solo II Supplemental Rules & Regulations for 2004

4.6 – Ladies Classes

A: Add – Ladies will be grouped into one class, “Ladies”, at each event. Trophies will be awarded by utilizing the PAX/RTP factors. If there is only one lady entry she will be bumped to her open class. Yearly points will be awarded in entrants original class, ie. SSL,

Worker positions will be assigned at close of Registration. Workers who leave prior to close of event will lose their fastest time recorded. Unusual circumstances will be dealt with on a one by one issue.

6.12 – Fun Runs (Added)

A: At the conclusion of official competition runs, and at the discretion of the Event Chair-man, Fun Runs may be allowed. All cars used for Fun Runs must have passed the safety in-spection as outlined in Section 3.3.3 and are limited to Entrant Cars.

Reimbursement for repair or replacement, if necessary, will be made to GCR.

7.10 – Official Results

Add – Official results of GCR Solo II events will be published in The Pylon following the event. Results will include driver’s name, class, car make or model, best time and order of finish.

11.3 - Gulf Coast Region Solo II Championship (Added)

The GCR will award annual champions for each class based on the following criteria. A: Championship points will only be awarded to competitors who are SCCA members of rec-

ord before the last event of the season. Membership must be verified and recorded at regis-tration.

B: Points are awarded for each event based on class finish position; not bumped class groups used for the purpose of awarding event trophies. (i.e. - drivers may receive 1st place points in class although they do not receive a first place trophy in a combined class).

C: - Points will be awarded as follows

1st –10 pts., 2nd –7 pts. , 3rd - 5 pts. 4th -4 pts., 5th - 3 pts. , 6th - 2 pts. 7th - 1 pt. , 8th and on 1 pt

You must have gotten a time posted in order to get points. A DNF does not count as a time.

D: Championship for each class will be determined by total points accumulated during the season, minus one lowest score. (i.e. – with 10 total events – if you run all 10, your lowest point event will be dropped. If you run 9 events or less, no points will be dropped as you already have a zero point event.)

E: In the event of a tie in accumulated point totals, the driver with the most first place fin-ishes will break the tie. If this still results in a tie, then total 2nd, 3rd or 4th place finishes, as required, will break the tie.

F: A driver must compete in class in more than half of the, total number of events held during the season (i.e. - 5 out of 9, 6 out of 10, etc.) to be eligible for class championship.

NOTE: The above Supplementary Regulations are based on the 2003 Solo Rulebook.
