2014 Year of

the Horse

The Chinese Zodiac or Shēngxiào – is a calendar system originating in the Han dynasty (206-220BC), which names each of the years in its 12-year cycle after an animal: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig, in that order. According to the system, the universe is made up of five elements – earth, water, fire, wood and metal – which interact with the 12 animals, resulting in the specific character of the year ahead. 2014 is the Year of the Wooden Horse. The Year of the Horse is expected to be full of dynamic and powerful energy. Charging ahead from last year’s Snake yin, 2014 will be a wild ride as the Horse’s boundless yang energy brings a burst of excitement, spontaneous surprises and unexpected life-changing events. The horse is a favourite with Chinese, as they are loyal, adaptable, adventurous, and full of infinite courage, strength and intelligence. This social animal also symbolises travel and speedy success. People born in the year of the horse are said to be a bit like horses: animated, active and energetic – they love being in a crowd. They are quick to learn independence – foals can walk minutes after birth – and they have a straightforward and positive attitude towards life. They are known for their communication skills and are exceedingly witty.

Redlands & Southern Districts Equestrian Group Inc. (RASDEG) P.O.Box 903, Capalaba QLD 4157 www.rasdeg.org.au Page 6

What if you’re not a horse? Well, what animal you are depends on what year you were born in and how the characteristics of this creature interact with the horse.

An interesting extract from the Sue Bright article in Salute

What If—an interesting point came up in the “what ifs” at the recent Judges Forum re errors. We all know

what an error is – rising trot instead of sitting, movements performed at the wrong marker, etc. – but what

if a horse spooks and takes off and to gain control the rider has no option but to come back round again

and continue on – is that an error? The answer is NO. If the question was in a theory exam I would have got

it wrong! It is something we need to be aware of. Any action by the horse, which necessitates the rider to

gain control (by maybe circling round etc.) is not classified as an error. Of course the movement the action

was made in is penalised by the disturbance caused to the movement etc. – but no error is given.

Rider Fitness Exercise of the moment from

Equifitt.com

Side leg pushes to help counteract tight hips/grippy knees/tight adductors.

I've lost count of how many riders I've worked with or talked with who have a tendency for their

inner thigh muscles to grip the horse. These powerful adductor muscles are in fact, often quite

tight in most adults because of the seated positions we adopt most of the day: in the car, at work.

When the body already has tension in these muscles, and then you are on a horse and trying to

find your balance, the body will respond by using muscles according to their default. So some

riders find their knees pinch (visible in floppy lower leg) or they have issues with sitting trot

(because the pelvis is locked down), or the horse is deaf to the leg aids (because they legs are

constantly squeezing in.

Stretching the inner thigh is not enough because the body will still revert back to using those

powerful muscles. Also, muscles that have become imbalanced like that, work in pairs. In other

words, the muscles on the OUTSIDE of the leg and thigh have become weak. So to help you

achieve a more neutral leg and more mobile pelvis, combine stretching with strengthening the

outside of your leg.

The side leg push is so easy to do with a bit of exercise tubing or elastic - just stand and push out

leg out, then bring it back in slowly. You get the benefit of the exercise on the way out, and more

importantly, by resisting being pulled back in too quickly. The added bonus of this exercise is that

it also trains balance as you stand on only one leg at a time while you do it.

Happy training!

RASDEG Members Day 23 February 2014 – by Jan Sturgess

Our first members dressage competition for 2014 saw some 27 riders out for the morning

with lots of familiar faces as well as a few new ones as well. It was quite a breezy morning

and that seemed to stir up some of the horses, or maybe everyone was just a bit keen first

day back. There were some very nice tests ridden though with our top placegetters in all

the classes achieving scores well into the 60%’s. Special mention to Ashleigh Urban on

Swingtime Kazoo who took out the Novice 2.2 with 70.42%. It was also impressive that our

great supporters, Georgia and Kate Anderson rode 10 tests and five horses between them.

We were very pleased to see the intrepid judging duo, Max and Judy Herschell there and it

was particularly nice that they spent some time talking to newer members at the end of the

day, offering their many years of experience and tips.

Even though we could have had a bit more rain through this summer, the grounds were

looking good and they rode well too. The new fencing and yards were much appreciated.

It was great to be able to coordinate the day and ride as well, and that is only possible when

everyone turns up and does their job. This event was a bit unusual with the large number of

members who offered to do their Gold Club – it made such a difference to filling those

difficult jobs around pencilling and gear check. Thanks guys.

We trialled a new canteen option for this event as well – a light option! We set up the

coffee and tea and sold muffins, cakes and andwiches. It certainly allows a wider range of

helpers to operate the canteen in this simplified format and we think everyone was able to

get enough to eat on the day - feedback is welcome though. Should we try a breakfast

option? There seemed to be a few enquiries for bacon and egg rolls early on. Please let us

know and we will balance your preferences with what we think is achievable. One thing

that did make a difference was the lovely cold slices of watermelon provided by Tirrion.

They went down a treat after riding.
