THE HERB BLURB

LICORICE, or GLYCYRRHIZA GLABRA, is a perennial legume native to Europe and Asia. Its roots contain the bulk of its flavoring and medicinal compounds. They can be bought in long, dried sticks to gnaw on, or may be finely cut or ground for adding to your horse’s feed.

BODY BOOSTLicorice acts as a natural anti-inflammatory with steroid-like effects. Animal studies have shown that it helps with ulcers, reflux and digestive issues, as well as heart disease, weight loss, and immune deficiencies. It combats stress by strengthening the adrenals and boosting cortisol availability in the body. Cortisol is on the frontline of the body’s defense system against stress, so licorice supplementation is a good idea for many newly rescued animals or horses in crisis.

Licorice also stimulates the body’s production of interferon, which helps the immune system fight viral activity. Meanwhile, glycyrrhizin acid inhibits bacterial and viral reproduction, making licorice a useful addition to any immune-boosting protocol.

In cases of heaves or respiratory distress, licorice reduces inflammation while helping open airways and fight possible viral causes. If the immune system is in hyper-drive, licorice can soothe the central nervous system and lessen the allergic response. If your horse is suffering from unexplained skin allergies, hot spots or hair loss, licorice may be beneficial.

Licorice has been shown to contain phytoestrogens, which means it can have slight estrogenic effects and may be of use with mares that have difficulty going into season or conceiving. Once a mare has conceived, discontinue use. Licorice may cause premature labor and is not recommended for pregnant or nursing animals.

HOW TO USE LICORICEWith licorice, a little goes a long way. The glycyrrhizin found in licorice plays a vital role in many of its effects, but it can also deplete potassium when taken regularly. If you plan to feed your horse licorice for more than a few weeks, supplementation with potassium is recommended.

This is quite easy to achieve by adding one or two teaspoons of dried stinging nettle or dandelion leaves to the feed. Many horses also like bananas, which you can give fresh or as dried chips for treats.

The best way to use licorice is dried and finely cut or ground. Add a half to one teaspoon to your horse’s feed daily, depending on his size.

Another option, especially if using licorice to treat gastric issues, is to try deglycyrrhizinated licorice, or DGL. This can be found in chewable form in many health food stores and is preferred by some herbalists over the unaltered herb, especially if there is a pre-existing high

blood pressure issue or liver damage.

IVCJournal.com

Integrative Veterinary Care Journal bridges the gap between the worlds of allopathic and holistic veterinary care. Thousands of veterinarians and vet technicians are interested in ways to enhance their practice and increase revenues, and integrative health is what their clients are asking for. These vets are the last major frontier for distribution of both traditional and integrative health products and services, and are a well targeted advertising investment.

IVC discusses market trends in health treatments, new product features, industry news, how to create a strong retail experience, leading modalities, and nutrition education that expands on what is typically taught in vet school. Our Tech Talk columns focus on keeping the vet technician on top of alternative opportunities. Grow your business with IVC’s comprehensive approach as we work with the top experts in the world and develop our distribution to span the global market.

“Do you offer acupuncture?” “Could chiropractic treatments help my dog?” More veterinarians are hearing questions like this, thanks to the growing number of clients who want to explore alternative options for their pets. So it makes good sense to think about adding some of these therapies to your own practice.

But how do you go about finding Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine professionals? What should you look for when deciding who to work with? For this article, we drew on the expertise of three integrative veterinarians who work with CAVM specialists – Dr. Richard Palmquist, DVM, Dr. Pedro Luis Rivera, DVM, FACFN, and Dr. Mark D. Newkirk, VMD.

What qualities do you look for in a CAVM specialist?

Ideally, we are looking for a balance between four things:

Competency – do they know their materials? In areas like acupuncture, herbs, chiropractic and classical homeopathy, veterinary certification groups train and certify professionals. If the veterinarian is certified, that indicates at least basic competency. Many doctors are well trained but have not sought out formal certification. In some cases there are no recognized certifications, so we need to consider other issues when evaluating a practice’s potential usefulness. Communication skills – integrative and CAVM veterinary professionals are intimately involved with interpersonal relationships, and are generally ethical and truth-centered in their associations. These qualities are essential when working in patient-centered approaches. Finding and conveying information in a way the consumer can understand and use is critical. A lion’s share of the work in integrative medicine involves communication, so if you can’t communicate effectively with a professional, that person may not be the right one. Reputation – when a professional is successful in treating large numbers of cases for long periods, they probably have competency and communication skills. What’s more, they usually know how to interact with many circumstances and have proven the test of time. The community usually knows these people and values their presence.

JOURNAL

The AHVMA Journal provides:• a place for veterinarians to publish

research-level articles related to alternative and complementary approaches.

• a resource for holistic newsand opinions.

• a forum for “how-to” veterinarian focused articles.

• educationally focused non-advertorial style articles from vendors.

32 AHVMA Journal Volume 39 Summer 2015

AbstractA 10-month-old Terrier mix dog was presented for

respiratory and neurological disease after adoption from an

animal shelter. Her signs were consistent with a distemper

type disease. She was previously unresponsive to antibiotics

and anti-seizure medications and was worsening clinically.

Therapy was instituted with thymus extract and complex

Homotoxicologicals as injections, and continued home

care with oral Homotox /thymus medications. She was

given oral supplementation with a deer velvet combination,

in addition to dimethylglycine. Response was gradual,

and the dog regained muscular coordination and normal

respiratory function.

IntroductionDistemper, caused by a Morbillivirus, can cause serious,

often life threatening conditions that affect multiple organ

systems in canines and other species. Conventional therapy

is often unrewarding, and a large percentage of afflicted

patients die, or are euthanized, due to poor response. This

paper discusses a novel approach to treatment of these

difficult cases, utilizing immune modulating activity of

thymus extracts, complex homeopathics (Homotoxicology

preparations), and supplements.

Case StudyAs a clinical practitioner, I am sometimes bemused by the

clients who manage to get more than their share of difficult

illnesses in their pets. Such is the case for one of my clients,

who several years ago, brought me a Shar-pei with refractory

seizures, uncontrolled on massive doses of Phenobarbital.

We managed to improve her life considerably and reduced

her need for medications, so when faced with another

challenging charge, she made her way down to our practice

in search of a second opinion.
