whatyou'llencounter.Inwildernessareas,youprobablycomeacrosshikers,horses,llamas,mulesandotherpackstock.
UsingCommonSenseontheTrailByAnnCompton
Inmanyotherareasyou'llalsoencounterbicyclesandmotorcycles.Therearesomesimple"rulesoftheroad"thatapplytotrailuseandrightofway.Asageneralrule,horseshavetherightofwayoverothertrailusers.Ashorseowners,it'sourresponsibilitytousethisprinciplewiselyandtoouradvantage.Youshouldbeconsiderateofchildrenonhorsebacktoo.Kidsmaynothavetheskillstomaneuvertheirhorsesoutofthewaylikewe"experienced"adultsdo.
Whenmeetingorpassingotherhorses,hikers,bicycles,ormotorcyclesonthetrail,knowwhohastherightofwayHikershavetherightofwayovereverythingexcepthorses.Alltrailusersaresupposedtoyieldtothehorse.Askthothertrailuserstomaketheirpresenceknowntothehorsebytalkingtoletthehorseknowthattheyare"humans"opposedto"trailgoblins".Insomeinstances,eventhoughyouhavetherightofwayyoumaybebetterpositionedyieldtoanothertrailuser-beconsiderate.Basically,whoevercangetoffthetraileasiestshoulddoso.Commonsenseandcourtesyaremuchmoreimportantthanwhohastherightofway.

Whenyoumeetahikerorbicyclist,lethimknowthatheshouldgooffthetrailonthedownhillside.Letthemknowthathorsesarcreaturesofflightandarelikelytomoveawayfrompressureorsomethingthat"spooked"them.Then,ifthehorsegets"spooked"itwillgouphillinsteadofdownhill-thisisVERYimportant.Youcanusuallyhearorseeamotorcyclecomingbeforeitgetstoyou,soitmightbeeasierforyoutomoveoffthetrailifit'smoreconvenient.Articlecontinuesonpage7.

Maris Hawkins presented the May Treasurers Report. She also had a

tanshaw that afternoon. Since we had such a mild winter everythingstill in good shape. The work party will mostly focus on the water

Yvette had reviewed the units bylaws and propseveral changes. She passed out copies of the proposed changes,members discussed the changes. Yvette will make the requcorrectionsandpresentthenewchanges atthenextmeeting.

FortunaRodeoParadeTheRedwoodUnitisplanningtoattendandrideintheFortunaRodeoParadefor2009.TheparadeisayearlyeventthatcoincideswiththeFortunaRodeo.TheparadeisheldonMainStreetinFortunaandattractshundredsofspectatorseveryyear.TheRodeoParadewillbeawonderfulwaytogetthepublictolearnabouttheRedwoodUnitandwhatwedo.
TheRedwoodUnitsinsurancerequiresanadditionalfeeperhorseparticipatingintheparade.Thecostwillbebetween$7to$10perhorse.WealsowanttohaveRedwoodUnitshirtsmadebeforetherodeo.

On Saturday May 30th, several Redwood Umembers gathered at Mad River Beach for Member Education Pack Training and Ride. PKriger was the unofficial instructor. Those wattended were able to learn and practice basket, and diamond hitches, and learn other valuainformation from Pete. The day concluded with a shride on Mad River Beach.

inthetrailer.Manypeopleoverlookthisimportant
mponentofthetrainingfoundation.Horsesthatonlystandinthecrosstiestobeoomedorsaddledneverlearnthepatienceinvolvedinbecomingagoodtrailhorse.rtunately,thisiseasytoteach.Yourhorseneedstobeabletostandquietlyanumberways;tiedtoahitchingpost,tiedfromabove,tiedtoatree,etc.Ifyouaregoingernight,thenyouneedtotrainyourhorsetostandquietlyfor8-10hours.Ideally,urhorseshouldbetrainedtohobblestoo.
It'salmostimpossibletomountfromthewnhillsideonahillsidetrail.Ifyoucan'tturnyourhorsearound,you'llhaveproblems
youcan'tmountfrombothsidesofthehorse.Theplacetolearnthisisathome.Tryoutyourneweastcollarorrearcinchbeforeyougettothetrail.Don'tpracticeorexperimentwithwthingsonthetrail.Althoughwedoenjoywatchingahorsebuckoffariderthatesthistohim.Don'tbecheapentertainmentfortherestofus;workthisoutaheadtime.
.Ifyouchoosetohavethestallion,don'tendantofusbybringinghimalong.Ifyourmareisinheat,thenkeepherathomeawayfromtherestofus,evenifsheisyouronlyuneedtobeconsiderateofothers.Justbecauseyoucancontrolyourstallionormaredoesn'tmeanthatothersaroundyouhntroloftheirhorses.
Prepareyourhorseforthetrailathome.
Don'tbringyourhorseonatrailrideunlessitisphysicallyfit,calm,andexperiencedforthesituationyouareheadinginto
Toomanypeopleareridinghthataren'treadytobeonthetrail(thisgoesforboththepeopleandhorses).Unlessyourhorsehastheproperfoundation,you'reaskingtroubleifyoutakehimintoanenvironmentthatisnotveryforgivinisn'tfairtothehorseorthepeopleyouridewith.ThetrailswerideothePacificNorthwestcanbesteepandmountainous.Sometrailsha
verticaldropsof300-500feetofftheside.Wetrustourhorseswitholivesonthesetrails.
.Ifyourfriendsaregofora25-milerideandyourhorsehasbeeninastallfor3months,doIfyouareworkingthroughsomeissueswithyourhorseregardingitattitudeandyoucan'ttrusthim,don'tgo.Andifyou'veneverbeen
