I. Introduction

Echlnococcosis in both humans and animal^ is a

disease known since ancient times caused hi the

small taeniid tapeworms of the genus

bkhrnococcus [I]. The infection is ~or ldw idc in

distr~but~on and 15 k i n g increasingly reco~nized

ar mnoses of public health importance in many

cnuntries o f the world. The genus Echrnococcui

co~itains four well.recognized species namely.

khinococcur granuloslls causing c)stic

echinococcosis (CE), E mulrilocular~s causing

alheolar echinococcasis (AE) and E olipiwhrli~

and E vogeli, both causing polyc)~tic

ech~nncoccarls (PE).

In India, E pnuiusus is the most u~despread

species or med~cal impnance that causes CC In

hurnans and also in fam animals. So fir oni! feu

repuns of E muli~iocularis causing AE and E

riiryurfhrur causing PE have been repned from

India, E vufeleir is yet to be documented lion1

lndia The main objective of the present review is

to document the reported studies published riom

lndia relating to different aspects of

echinococcosis with spxial reference to CE.
