Alate: winged individual in social insects.
Anal lobe: a lobe in the posterior basal part of the wing.
Antenna: (pl. antennae) a pair of segmented appendages located on the head above the mouthparts and usually sensory in function.
Anterior: front, in front of. Anus: the posterior opening of the alimentary tract.
Apical: at the end, tip or outermost part.
Apodal: legless
Apterous: wingless
Asymmetrical: not alike on the two sides.
Axon: the process of a nerve cell which conducts impulses away from the cell body of the nerve.
Basal: at the base, near the point of attachment (of an appendage).
Beak: the protruding mouthpart structures of a sucking insect; proboscis.
Biotic potential: rate of reproduction, depending on the number of ova, broods, etc.
Bipectinate: having branches on two sides like the teeth of a comb.
Bisexual: with males and females.
Brood: the individuals that hatch from the eggs laid by one mother; individuals that hatch at about the same time and normally mature at about the same time.
Camouflage: deception, where an insect is made to look like something else or concealed altogether.
Cardo: basal segment of first maxillar.
Carnivorous: feeding on the flesh of other animals.

Caste: a form or type of adult in a social insect.
Caterpillar: an eruciform larva; the larvae of a butterfly, moth, sawfly or scorpionfly.
Caudal: pertaining to the tail or the posterior part of the body.
Cercus: (pl. cerci) one of a pair of appendages at the end of the abdomen.
Chitin: a nitrogenous polysaccharide occurring in the cuticle of arthropods.
Cirbarium: the sucking apparatus by means of which the food is drawn up through the proboscis and passed into the oesophagus.
Circumesophageal connectives: portion of ventral nerve cord that circumvents the esophagus.
Claspers: paired grasping organs at end of abdomen in many male insects; or the last pair of prolegs in caterpillars.
Clavate: club-like, or enlarged at the tip.
Clypeus: part of face between labrum and frons.
Compound eye: an eye composed of many individual elements or ommatidia, each of which is represented exactly by a facet; the external surface of such an eye consists of circular facets that are very close together, or of facets that are in contact and more or less hexagonal in shape.
Coxa: the basal segment of the leg.
Cradles: place in which early stages of an insect are nurtured.
Crepuscular: active or flying at dusk or dawn.
Crochets: hooked spines at the tip of the prolegs of lepidopterous larvae.
Crop: the dilated portion of the foregut just behind the esophagus.
Cross vein: a vein connecting adjacent longitudinal veins.
Cryptobiotic: hidden; animals whose habit is to always remain hidden.
Cuticle: a tough noncellular coating in many plants and animals.
Declivity: a downward slope.
Dehiscence: a splitting along a natural line.
Diapause: a condition of suspended animation; a resting period between stages of insect development, generally to avoid adverse environmental conditions.
Dimorphism: of two forms; as in sexual.
Distal: that part of a segment or appendage farthest from the body.

Ejaculatory duct: the terminal portion of the male sperm duct.

Etiolation: becoming whitened or bleached from lack of sunlight.
Exarate: sulcated; sculptured.
Femur: (pl. femora) the third leg segment, located between the trochanter and the tibia.
Filament: a slender threadlike structure.
Filiform: hairlike or threadlike.
Fontanelle: a small, depressed, pale spot on the front of the head between the eyes (Isoptera).
Foregut: the anterior portion of the alimentary canal, from the mouth to the midgut.
Frass: solid insect excrement; also used to describe wood fragments made by wood-boring insects.
Frons: forehead; upper part of head, between vertex and clypeus.
Front: that portion of the face between the antenna, eyes and ocelli; the frons.
Furcula: the forked springing apparatus of the Collembola.
Fusiform: spindle-shaped.

Gallery: tunnels in wood caused by wood-boring insects, normally refers to tunnels associated with egg laying.
Ganglion: (pl. ganglia) a knotlike enlargement of a nerve, containing a coordinating mass of nerve cells.
Gastric caeca: fingerlike pouches extending both anteriorly and posteriorly from the stomach; for digesting food.
Genitalia: the sexual organs and associated structures; the external sexual organs.
Gill: evagination of the body wall or hindgut, functioning in gaseous exchange in an aquatic insect.
Gonads: organs producing reproductive cells.
Gregarious: living in groups.
Grub: a scarabaeoid form larva; a thick-bodied larva with a well-developed head and thoracic legs, without abdominal prolegs, and usually sluggish.
Habitat: the environment in which an organism lives.
Haltere: (or halter) a small knobbed structure on each side of the metathorax in Diptera representing the hind wings.
Head: the anterior body region, which bears the eyes, antenna and the mouthparts.
Hemimetabolous: having a simple metamorphosis like that in the Odonata, Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera.
Herbivorous: feeding on plants.
Hindgut: the posterior portion of the alimentary tract, between the midgut and anus.
Holometabolous: with complete metamorphosis.
Horny: thickened or hardened.
Host: the organism in or on which a parasite lives; the plant on which an insect feeds.
Humeral: pertaining to the shoulder; located in the anterior basal portion of the wing.

Hypopharynx: a median mouthpart structure arising postorally and anterior to the labium; the ducts form the salivary glands are usually associated with the hypopharynx.
