REFLECTINGON A YEARWITH RMHBC
2017 ANNUAL REPORT
A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
2017 marked the 3rd year in our new House, providing a home
away from home for families from across BC and the Yukon.
It was a year of growth for our Board, as we have been
fortunate to add tremendous talent to our ranks, and deepen
our expertise in several key areas. Our goal remains to help
steward the organization within the four key pillars of our five
year strategic plan: delivering family-centred care, engaging
with our stakeholders, expanding our provincial reach, and
evolving our leadership in care and service.
2017 was a year of listening to our families, observing how they
interact in the House, and deepening our understanding of how
to best deliver on our mission: caring for families of children
whose health needs take them far from home, and keeping
those families together in a home away from home, providing
comfort, compassion, and a sense of community. New programs
and activities reflect our commitment to that mission.
In addition, we began the groundwork for expansion, starting
conversations that will help us to deepen our mission, adding
Family Rooms across the province over the coming years.
Our work is only possible because of our donors, volunteers,
community champions who host events in support of our
families, our many event sponsors, corporate partners and
each and every individual donor who continues to give to this
mission and our families. We are humbled by the tremendous
support we received in 2017 and are profoundly grateful for it.
TRACEY ARNISH
Chair of the Board
A MESSAGEFROM OUR CEO
As the CEO of a not-for-profit organization whose families
depend on us during one of the most challenging times of
their lives, what keeps me up at night is likely what keeps
every CEO in my position up at night—how to make sure we
are always there for the people who need us. We depend
on generous donors to serve up to 2,000 families each year,
providing them a home away from home, complete with
programs, activities, and support.
2017 was another year of learning, evolving, and engaging
with our stakeholders and donors, whose gifts came in many
shapes and sizes. Whether a child comes in to donate the
proceeds of his fourth birthday party, one of our corporate
groups hosts a Family Meal, or our many committed
champions keep us top of mind and in their hearts at a time
where there is just so much to think about out there in the real
world, we consider ourselves extremely fortunate to receive
these gifts.
Ronald McDonald House is a community, a group of families
sharing a journey, surrounded and supported by all of you: our
volunteers, our champions, our wellness program leaders, our
event attendees, our corporate partners, McDonald’s owner/
operators, and the many individuals who host their own
community events in the cities and towns they call home.
This deep and diverse group of donors will ensure that we can
continue to fulfill our mission, keeping families from BC and
the Yukon close when it matters most, now and in the future.
Thank you for your inspiring and unwavering support.
Sincerely,
RICHARD PASS
Chief Executive Officer
MEET CALEBFROMCROFTON BC
Caleb Champagne spent the first 112 days of his life
in the hospital. After he was airlifted to Vancouver
just two hours after he was born, doctors
discovered that he had Barth Syndrome, a very
rare genetic disorder that causes heart disease and
other complications.
During this chaotic time, Ronald McDonald House
became a home away from home for mom Jasmine,
dad Mark, and Caleb’s big brother, 2 1⁄2 -year-old
Jordan. What truly kept the family going was the
community they found at the House. Other parents
came together to support them even while facing
struggles of their own, and having other kids to
play with also helped Jordan to thrive. “We made
friends here that will be like family members
forever,” says Jasmine.
Happily, in 2017 the Champagnes were able to
return to home to Crofton, a place that Caleb had
never seen. Jordan wished that he could bring all
his friends from RMH BC home with him—but there
are many reunions in his future as the family will
need to return to Vancouver once a month for tests
and checkups.
MEET OLIVIAFROMTERRACE BC
“It was a normal day, and then we got the call that we
were going to Vancouver that night,” says dad Alfie
Sampare about the day he learned his daughter, Olivia,
had leukemia. During the 10-month stay that followed,
Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon came to mean
comfort, home, and security for 5-year-old Olivia and
her dad.
Staying at the House gave them a community of
support so that they were less isolated in Vancouver.
Family meals helped to reduce stress for Alfie, and the
many activities in the House helped to take Olivia’s
mind off of treatment. Her favourite activities during
her stay were arts and crafts, gardening, and music.
Alfie feels fortunate that Olivia started her treatment
at the same time as several other little girls around her
age, and their families formed a strong bond, helping
each other through the tough times and celebrating
their successes. While at first she was very shy, Olivia
now runs around the House like it’s her own. “The first
couple of months we were here, she wouldn’t leave my
side. Now she’s chasing me away!” says Alfie. “She’s a
social butterfly. She knows everybody.”
Alfie and Olivia are now back at home in Terrace,
and return to Vancouver once a month for follow
up treatments.
