It is there that we find men and women who can help us test the spirit… Is what we are being called to do helping others and ourselves grow closer to God? Are our actions and words building up or hurting others? Do we live with joyful hearts? Finally, the call to discipleship is a call to radical transformation. If we stand open to whatever God will ask of us, “Speak, I am listening!”, we will be launched into a new way of life. We no longer belong to ourselves and think only of our needs, we belong to the Body of Christ and live for others and proclaim to the world the justice of God. JANUARY 14, 2018THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

GOD IS CALLING…WILL YOU ANSWER?

As we begin Ordinary season, we are given a chance to catch our breath before the Church heads into the season of Lent. But this is not a time to sit back, kick our shoes off and relax. This is a time to reflect on the ordinary, everyday events of our lives. This is the time to reflect on how we listen to God and respond to His call… EVERYDAY!

We are introduced to Samuel who hears the voice of God calling him but doesn’t recognize it. It takes the guidance of Eli who told Samuel, “if God calls you again, ask God to speak and assure Him that you will listen. There is a clear difference between Samuel’s relationship with God before this experience and after it. Before his night in the temple, Samuel did not know God well; he had received no revelation; and he did not tell others about God. Now, Samuel not only

knows the Lord God but his life takes a new direction and he is blessed in such a way that his words produce and he effectively helps others to change their lives.

We are then thrust into the Gospel where we see the witness of John the Baptist. John realizes because of Jesus, he must decrease and Jesus must increase. He is not jealous of Jesus… he does not try to force his views and preaching on others… he does not take his disciples and go to some other section of the Jordan River where he can keep doing what he wants to do. No… John directs two of his disciples to Jesus,… ”Look, the Lamb of God”…and tells them to follow Jesus!

Because of our baptismal commitments, we are invited to become disciples. We are all called by God. Like Samuel and the first disciples of Jesus, we may need help in discerning that the call is genuine and from God. So we turn to the community, the Church.

Discipleship… following Jesus… is anything but ordinary!

EUCHARISTIC MINISTER NEEDED AT NURSING HOME If you are looking for a rewarding yet minimal commitment, this ministry is for you! We have an opening for one Eucharistic Minister to bring communion to catholic residents at Mason Health Care. Your ministry would entail visiting every sixth Sunday, meeting individually with the residents, typically spending 1-2 hours in total. You do not currently need to be a Eucharistic Minister. This is truly a ministry that you get more out of than you put into it - you will leave feeling fulfilled! If you are interested or would like more information, please reach out to me at [email protected] or 513-378-8500.

ST. SUSANNA HEROES MASS

Calling all St. Susanna Heroes to attend the Heroes Mass on January 31st at 8:15am. The students of St. Susanna want to say thank you for your service to our community. We hope you can attend!

2018 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL (CMA)

Next weekend, the 2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal will kick off throughout the archdiocese. The CMA is our opportunity each year to support the work of six vital ministries and their many programs, all of which operate right here in our archdiocese.

Also, if we exceed our parish goal for the CMA, 50% of our overage comes back to the parish to be used toward a parish ministry that we have selected. Please prayerfully consider supporting this year’s CMA. Your help is needed to Impact the Story for thousands of people throughout our archdiocese. For more information, please visit CatholicAppeal.info. Thank you!

ADULT FAITH FORMATIONDISCIPLES IN ACTION

THE FIRST PARISH FISH FRY IS FEBRUARY 16TH!!

The Fish Fry needs many volunteers to be successful, and your help is needed! It is a great opportunity to serve the Parish community and take part in the fellowship of working with other St. Susanna parishioners during the Lenten season. If you are new to the parish and want to get to know some of your fellow parishioners, sign up! The Fish Fry runs Fridays between Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (February 16 – March 23). The volunteer sign-up can be found at www.stsusanna.org/fishfry. If you have any questions, please contact Scott Kososki at 513-461-9098 or [email protected] or the Parish Office. Thank you!!

Ladies, you won’t want to miss this! The Fourth Greater Cincinnati Catholic Women’s Conference, “Hear I am, Lord,” will take place on

March 3, 2018 at The Manor House (7440 Mason Montgomery Road, Mason, Ohio 45040). Tickets are available at www.CincinnatiCatholicWomensConference.org.

There is an amazing lineup of speakers, confessions, vendors, visiting with friends, and Mass with Archbishop Dennis Schnurr. Take a little time for yourself this coming Lent and enjoy this day of spiritual renewal. Bring a friend!

SLEEPING MATS FOR THE HOMELESS Wednesday, January 31st at 6:30pm in the St. Susanna Cafeteria.

Learn how to make sleeping mats for the homeless - no experience needed!

Before you throw away that plastic grocery bag, consider this: It could be helping the homeless get a better night’s sleep. Join fellow parishioners in learning how to make “plarn” (plastic yarn) and crochet it into a sleeping mat. The advantages of using plarn is that it keeps individuals off the ground which can be cold and damp. Plarn also provides for additional comfort.

ATTENTION YOUNG ADULTS! WE WANT TO KNOW! We are in the process of re-vamping our Young Adult Ministry, and want to know how to best serve you. Please go to www.stsusanna.org/young-adult-ministry and complete the survey linked there. This will allow us to create and plan events that will meet the needs of young adults in our parish. Please contact Melissa Capella at [email protected] or 513-398-3821, ext. 3149 with questions. Join us for our next Young at Heart luncheon on

January 17th. Our activity is our book and puzzle exchange. Collect all of those books you have finished and puzzles you have built. Bring one in, take another one home. Lunch is served

at 12:00pm in the St. Susanna room. Remember to bring in canned food items for the Schuh Center.

JANUARY CAREGIVER MEETING7-8:30pm, Wednesday, January 24th in the St. Julie Billiart Room

“I am an unlikely guardian. A month ago I thought the Medicare doughnut hole was a breakfast special for seniors. I am a care inflictor.” - George Hodgman

The Caregiver Support Group has become so helpful to so many. Please join us, or if you know someone, whether they belong to St. Susanna or not, please pass along this invitation. Call Sharon Kipfer, 513-509-3278 with any questions.

What’s in a Name?

In this painting the upper scene shows Peter and Andrew walking toward Jesus. The lower central

scene depicts Peter in the center, with Andrew behind him, and Jesus enthroned on a rock pointing toward him.

The scene is simple for a reason. Jesus’ call is simple: Follow me. Our response should be simple, too. We often complicate the call with questions, fears, or doubts, wanting clarifications and assurances. But it is a simple imperative that requires a one-word answer: yes or no. Or as Samuel responded, “Speak, LORD for your servant is listening.”

Once accepted, the call implies a new identity born of a new, deeper relationship. When Jesus calls Simon, he changes his name. In the Bible, a name change indicates a new mission or purpose. Abram was renamed Abraham to father the Old Testament people in faith.

Simon is now Cephas, or rock. His mission is to father the New Testament people in faith. He is to be a solid, unbreakable foundation for his brothers—and eventually the whole Church. His strength comes not from perfection, for we know Peter was weak, but from his acceptance of Jesus’ love and call no matter his own weakness.

Similarly, in baptism and confirmation we take new names that come with our new, deeper calls. It is a meaningful Catholic tradition that parents name their children after a saint who becomes a model for their lives. Like Peter, we are called to greatness by Jesus, who looks at us, names us, and says, “Come follow me.” Let’s live up to that beautiful, simple invitation!

—Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

[Jesus said,] “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas which is translated Peter.”

(John 1:42)
