Role of Ethics and Values
Ethics and values enable the leader to foster collaborative ties within the organization.
Leadership is the process that happens between people in groups.
Applying and embracing ethics and values, specifically the seven listed earlier help to expand the notion that leadership can indeed be taught… And when its taught, it can spread like wild fire
and cause many great changes within society that were deemed “impossible” or “idealistic”.
Social Change Model of Leadership
Seven values that characterize the Social Change Model Change, Citizenship, Common purpose, Collaboration, Controversy with Civility, Consciousness of Self, Congruence, Commitment
Change in the Chapter
Change As a chapter, one of our biggest changes has
been the implementation of a annual scholarship for pledges and brothers.
Some brothers have been advocating for this for a while, and with much hard work and awareness of the good it can do, we have finally done it.
Our Citizenship
Citizenship Our various community service projects help
our brothers to immerse themselves in the lives of our community.
The best way to learn about humanity is to serve them.
Sigma Chi’s common purpose
Our three great aims of friendship, justice and learning guide our every move.
Specifically justice, our aims help toward the collective good.
Collaboration
Our chapter meetings are collaboration at its finest.
Through honest discussions and proposals, our leaders and our future leaders really reveal themselves with a commitment to serve.
My number one lesson I teach the new members is collaboration among the group. No question or answer is stupid, everyone’s
voice matters and everyone’s calls are answered.
Uh-oh, Controversy
Controversy unfortunately is inevitable in any group setting.
Controversy with Civility is the preferred value for dealing with controversy within an organization.
While we all disagree from time to time, open and critical discussion is paramount to the survival of any group.
The Consciousness of Self
Everyone is different and we all have various values and judgments. In Sigma Chi, we call this different
temperaments, talents, and convictions. Being aware of the self is fundamental to
any leadership position, How can you lead others and expect them to
absorb values you yourself do not possess?
Congruence
While we all come from different backgrounds and have different temperaments, talents and convictions…. It is important that we are all congruent with
aligning ourselves to the values of the organization.
Diversity and difference are awesome and encouraged, but we cant accept people into our order that do not embrace the values and the ethics we stand for.
Commitment
Commitment is most exemplified through individual leadership positions. The terms for leadership positions are very
fickle Right after the election and at the beginning
of the semester, its easy to be committed and accountable to one’s position.
Its during midterms and projects and problems that the limit of a person’s commitment to their position really shows.
Leadership Can Be Taught
My pledge education process is going well! Test scores are a lot better, More brother – new member bonding More new member – new member bonding
Authority vs. Leadership
Yelling and being assertive only work sometimes.
The class is closer now so having a mean tone only unites them to be more negative.
Leading them through collaborative efforts has proven much more effective.
Technical Problems vs. Adaptive Challenges
Getting the chapter to embrace shy new members has proved to be an adaptive challenge. Most fraternities embrace social and outgoing
persons. Its quite hard to make brothers go the extra
step to pull a new member out of his shell.
Power vs. Progress
The evolution of these new members is much more important than the technical power that I yield over them. In all things Magister, I am the final decision
maker. I can make things as hard or as easy as I
want. I choose to be simpler and more straight
forward with my tests and assignments to foster their intuitive discussions on the subject matter rather than stress them out over grading details.
Personality vs. Presence
When shifting from authority to leadership and technical to adaptive problems and solutions, My personality (laidback yet structured) has
less to do with teaching these guys as my ability to intervene and be present within their group.
I don’t want to be the dominant boss, I want to be included in their thoughts and discussions when it comes to our chapter and the impressions they have with it.
