Belgrade, the capital of the Republic ofSerbia, occupies the central position in Southeastern Europe. Located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, Belgrade is often called, “the gate of the East, the door to the West”, due to its unique position.

Belgrade is an ancient city with rich,7000-year long history. Singidunum, the name of the fortified settlement, was first mentioned in 279 B.C.Throughout centuries, Belgrade wasexposed to numerous attacks and devastations, due to its attractivegeographic position.

It was finally liberated on April 18, 1867 and Prince Mihailo Obrenović moved the capital fromKragujevac to Belgrade.

The territory of Belgrade covers the area of 322,268 ha (3.7% territory of Serbia).It is administratively divided into 17 municipalities.

Belgrade is surrounded by two different natural unities: the Pannonian Basin (Panonska nizija) on the north, and Šumadija on the South. The average height above see-level is 117 m, and there are two mountains near Belgrade: Kosmaj (628 m) and Avala (511 m). The length of river banks in Belgrade is 200 km and there are 16 river islets (Ada Ciganlija and Veliko ratno ostrvo are the biggest).

ASSOCIATION OF AGRICULTURE AND FOOD INDUSTRY

Agricultural companies, cooperatives and farmers on Belgrade territory own numerous agricultural machines and equipment. Belgrade has significant capacities for primary agricultural production, especially cattle-breeding, as well as capacities for the processing of basic agricultural products.

Belgrade region has a significant land potential of about 221 thousand ha of farmland, which comprises 68% of the total territory of the City.

In the agricultural sector, there are 759 enterprises employing around 8.000 workers. Technical and technological capacities and staff qualifications are a good base for a developed:

• ●Food processing industry (important exporters include the meat, fruit and vegetable processing companies, dairies, frozen foods and confectionary industry, etc)

• ●Beverage industry (exporters of wine, brandy, beer and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages).

Belgrade has the remarkable conveniences for tourism and hospitality development, especially its natural conditions, geographical and strategic position, developed infrastructures and rich cultural and historical heritage. Belgrade is the city of museums and famous ambient units (Knez Mihailova Street and Terazije, the Republic Square, Skadarlija, the Zemun fortress, Ada Ciganlija and many others), the city of culture, with over 20 stages and as many concert halls, as well as the city of sports. There are over 78,000 entrepreneurs – owners of trade, hospitality, craft and other shops, bureaus and agencies, who operate independently on the territory of Belgrade.

UNION OF GENERAL ENTREPRENEURIAL ASSOCIATIONSThe Union of General Entrepreneurial Associations, or shortly, the Union of Entrepreneurs, is an organizational form with a long tradition in the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce. The Union presently comprises 19 general associations from Belgrade and it shows the continual tendency of growth.

In the total number of entrepreneurs in Serbia (around 209,000 registred entrepreneurs), the Share of Belgrade is more than 24% and it shows predominance of crafts and services.

A part of the Union's activities is carried out through the Board comprising representatives of all general associations registered with the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce.The Union of General Entrepreneurial Associations cooperates closely with the Belgrade City Assembly, local authorities, ministries in charge of the legal and economic matters, the National Employment Agency, employer's organisations as well as with other government agencies and non-government organisations which can assist in the creation of a better business environment. Moreover, the Union delegates its representatives to the Serbian Chamber of Commerce.

Promoting good business practices is among the most important tasks of courts of honour in the chambers of commerce.Courts of honour can be established at all levels of chamber of commerce system. The one in the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce has been active since 1913. It has 56 members who are elected by the Chamber Assembly for a four year mandate. Court of Honor contributes to: • ●enhancement of responsibility and honesty in business relations, • ●improved knowledge and level of awareness among member companies about business ethics,• ●protection of member companies, consumers and citizens from unfair business practices, • ●mitigation of the lack of legal provisions,• ●development of adequate business environment and conditions for sustainable business

operations. The Court of Honour reduces the workload of regular and specialised courts and contributes to faster resolving of disputes.

The Cooperative Union organizes and presently coordinates 49 agricultural cooperatives, 36 crafts cooperatives and 44 cooperatives in other industries.Agricultural production in villages and in the private sector is organized through 58 000 farming households, 51 000 of which, apart from the crop farming, engage in livestock breeding. Beside supplying completely 38 city’s green markets with fresh fruit and vegetables, individual farms have a significant share (about 60%) in supply of the food processing industry on the territory of Belgrade.
