5 Tips to Guarantee Canning Success Eartheasy.com

In addition to food security and freedom from unwant-ed additives, home canning gives us the old-fashioned satisfaction of transforming the harvest into next sea-son’s feast.

1. Start with the best produce for an end product worth savoring.

Canning takes time, sweat, and fuel; avoid squander-ing those precious commodities. The magic of can-ning is taking a crate of just-picked seasonal succu-lence and sealing in that peak flavor for the lean times ahead. Reformation 500

Can You Bowl Better Than a 16th Century Lutheran?

Come to the Reformation Fair on Oct. 29th and Find Out!

A Reformation 500 Fair will be held in the auditorium during the Sunday Church School hour and is an

intergenerational event.

There will be games played in Luther’s day to try and crafts to enjoy.

Tickets for Grace’s Reformation 500 meal following the 10:30 AM worship service on Sunday, October 29th are now available.

Carl Hartman has planned a delicious German dinner highlighted by pork schnitzel, spätzle, red cabbage, and bee sting cake, accompanied by a variety of beverages including root beer, Riesling, and beer. Share this special meal with your Grace family as a part of your observance of this significant day in Lutheran history.

On Sunday, October 15th we will be learning about the

Lutheran World Federation at 9 AM in the auditorium.

Mary Ann Johnson, widow of the Rev. David Johnson, will share her experiences with the Lutheran World Federation in the Adult Forum on Sunday, October 15.

She accompanied her husband while he served as Representative of the Lutheran World Fed-eration in Jerusalem and the West Bank from 1989 to 1998 where they lived on LWF proper-ty on the Mt. of Olives.

Previously, Pastor Johnson had worked with LWF in Tanzania in the 1960’s in refugee reset-tlement on the borders of Rwanda, Congo, and Mozambique where he discovered a passion for service to misplaced people stating that he would return to LWF if given the opportunity.

His call in 1989 at the height of the first intifada involved serving Palestinian refugees. In addition, the Johnsons lived in Cairo, Egypt from 1978 to 1982 as LCA missionaries serving expatriate congregations. They traveled ex-tensively to the more than 60 member LWF countries to raise awareness and funds for Augusta Victoria Hospital on the Mt. of Olives which serves those with social needs with priority services to Palestinian refugees.

Christian Formation

On Reformation Sunday, October 29, at 4pm

The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 750 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, will host a conference-wide hymn fest marking the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Titled, “God’s Word Will Not Be Silenced: A Hymn Fest for the Reformation,”.

This multicultural hymn festival will feature hymns that grew out of the theology and hymnody of Martin Luther. Because the roots of the Lutheran Reformation predate 1517, music from the Mennonite tradition will be sung as well, representing the influence of Jan Hus, the Bohemian reformer. Instrumentalists include QuintEssentially Brass, recorders, African percussion, harp, bells, choirs, organ, and piano. The Rev. James Dunlop, Bishop of the Lower Susquehanna Synod, will be present. Rare books from the period will be on display.

An hors d’oeuvres reception will be held after the hymn fest. The church is fully accessible, and there is plenty of off-street parking. The event is free, with an offering being received.

Those who might want to sing in the choir are invited to come to the rehearsal on

Saturday, October 28 from 10am-noon.

Please contact Rev. Marilyn Witte at [email protected]

or 717-393-3958 to join that choir so that appropriate space may be made available.

Parish News ...

October 15, 2017 (19th Sunday after Pentecost, Year A, Proper 23)

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. –Psalm 23:1

In a world that encourages us to satisfy EVERY desire, this opening to the 23rd Psalm

declares bold defiance. The Holy Spirit transforms our heart and helps us understand

that God -- and only God -- satisfies our deepest wants and true needs. The rest of the

Psalm explains exactly how God takes care of us.

When: Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 6 PM to 8 PM - Location: To Be Announced

Nadia Bolz-Weber is coming to Lancaster in April, 2018 at an event hosted by the Parish Resource Center. Pastor Nadia is founding pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints, an ELCA congregation in Denver, Colorado.

She is also a New York Times best-selling author. Two of the most popular books she has written are Pastrix:The Cranky,Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint and Accidental Saints: Finding God in All the Wrong People. Acci-dental Saints was a Grace Book Group selection in previous years and also an adult education study here at Grace. As a recovering addict, Bolz-Weber will speak about her own faith journey and her vision for the changing church. Heavily tattooed and often profane, she is a voice for those struggling with addiction and also for those who feel less comfortable in a traditional church setting.

We would love to have a group from Grace going to the event. Tickets are on sale now at $29/person (for Parish Resource Center members). If you are interested in this event, please contact Barbara Andersen at 717-669-8258 or our Church Office.
