Saving Seed From Your Garden Earteasy.com / By Shannon Cowan Posted Aug 29, 2016

The easiest seeds to save are from self-pollinating annuals.

These plants usually pollinate themselves because the flowers they produce contain both male and female parts. They don’t need bugs or humans to help them reproduce, and they won’t usually cross-pollinate, which means you don’t have to separate your plants to ensure true seed.

There are exceptions to every rule of course, and sometimes an insect will transfer the pollen of one plant to another, causing cross-pollination, but that outcome is less likely with these plants.

Self-pollinating annuals set their seed during the same year you plant them and grow quickly to mature be-fore frost. These plants include beans, peas, lettuce, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers.

HOLY WORSHIP † WHOLLY SERVING

From Grace Church News 1917 published monthly in the interests of

Grace Evan. Lutheran Church

The year was 1917, and in April the United States of America entered “The Great War,” World War I. The year was 1917, and Lutherans across the nation were preparing to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the start of the Reformation.

The largest ethnic group in the USA at that time was German-Americans. However, there was much anti-German sentiment in the nation due to the fact that the USA had joined Britain, France, Italy, and Russia in fighting the Germans.

The November 1917 issue of Grace Church News was published just after Lancaster’s Luther-ans on November 4 jointly observed the 400th anniversary of the Reformation at three of the city’s Lutheran churches – including Grace.

It was reported that “each of the prominent Lutherans who spoke (at those services) gave utter-ance to the sentiments of the highest loyalty and devotion to the Star Spangled Banner.” Lutheran German-Americans, who probably accounted for a majority of worshippers at Lancas-ter’s Lutheran churches in 1917, were very careful to make it publically clear that they were loyal and patriotic American citizens, even while they commemorated “the heroic deeds and unequalled service of the most distinguished of all Germans,” Martin Luther.

Did Lancaster’s Lutheran churches, including Grace, keep the 400th commemoration of the Reformation low-key because of the wartime situation? Look for answers to this question in the conclusion of this report in an upcoming issue of Grace News, based on Grace’s archival material.

How blessed we are at Grace to have such references to help us understand where we have been and how we have been re-formed and renewed as a Lutheran congregation.

Then Peter came and said to Jesus, "Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I

forgive? As many as seven times?" Jesus said to him, "Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.”

- Matthew 18:21-22

Jesus teaches us how to be stewards of God’s love and mercy. Though our

world encourages us to hold grudges and “get even,” Jesus tells us to be

forgiving, just as God is forgiving to us. God’s love and mercy helps us

become more loving and merciful.
