WelcomeHello everyone,Welcome to this new edition of BusinessHome magazine and a huge thank you to our new sponsors

who have placed an advert or a voucher within our magazine. The Charity hopes you all make the most

of these vouchers, offers and the opportunity of placing your business with local people who have a real

commitment to offering value for money.

BusinessHome can also be downloaded from our website www.followyourdreams.org.uk, so after

you’ve used your vouchers from the magazine you can go online and download more vouchers time-

after-time-after-time, saving you money and helping our Charity and the local businesses that support it.

2011 has been a busy year so far with the Charity that has launched its largest fundraising campaign

ever, called Catch the Dream. This campaign was launched in the St David’s Centre Cardiff in January.

This inspirational campaign focuses upon catching 1000 dreams of youngsters with learning disabilities

throughout the UK.

Catch the Dream will be staging a series of workshops throughout the UK in some of the major

shopping centres, special needs schools, colleges, centres and groups working with some really special

youngsters to uncover their dreams, aspirations, hopes and desires. In 2011 we hope to catch 1000

dreams and with your support we trust we can help make them come true.

Our workshops also feature Britain’s Got Special Talent so as

Britain enjoys the Saturday night ritual of watching talent shows

like X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent etc, we believe youngsters

with learning disabilities should also have a platform to show off

their talent and we have created the platform to do just that. We

will be on the ‘search for a star’ and at the end of the year a grand

final will be held to find Britain’s most talented ‘special’ star.

We do hope you enjoy this new BusinessHome magazine and

if you know someone in your area you feel would benefit from

being involved with us within the Charity as a sponsor or as a

beneficiary then do get in touch, we are just a phone call away

from making some really special dreams coming true together.

Cheerio!

Please can you help us to catch and make some special dreams come trueFollow Your Dreams has launched its largest fundraising campaign ever called Catch the Dream. It is a 3 year Campaign that will create a wave of inspirational goal setting by youngsters with learning disabilities throughout the UK, who are looking to explore and develop their potential in music, art, sport and drama.

Catch the Dream Campaign was launched in Cardiff in January 2011 and will now tour throughout the whole of 2011 and will visit over some of the major shopping centres, special needs schools, colleges, centres and groups throughout the UK, placing the Charity in the spotlight of over 7 Million people.

This tour incorporates ‘Britain’s Got Special Talent’ and we are looking to find Britain’s Special Star on our tour of the UK.

The aim of the Catch the Dream is to Catch 1000 Dreams for youngsters with learning disabilities throughout the UK and then to work in partnership with local fundraisers to help make those dreams come true.

Our Campaign enables us to work in advance of the tour with some special individuals within special needs schools, colleges, groups and centres helping them to discover their dreams, goals, hopes and aspirations, priming them to attend one of our many Catch the Dream events.

Each event is highly entertaining. Participants attend as a group and for around an hour during which they look at superstars and heroes with learning disabilities and unveil their dreams to us and hang their dreams on our giant dreams catchers.

As Britain enjoys the Saturday night ritual of watching talent shows like X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent etc, we believe youngsters with learning disabilities should also have a platform to show

off their talent and we have created the platform to do just that. Each school will be judged by 3 appointed judges and prizes awarded for their talent. Every child goes home with a goody bag and a BIG smile.

We will be on the ‘search for a star’ and at the end of the year a grand final will be held to find Britain’s most talented ‘special’ star. We are already in talks to try and get that person to star on one of our TV favourites for 3 minutes of fame. This could all be possible thanks to you.

Company profileGraham de Vall Business Owner

Ecoways Tel 029 2088 6037

Email [email protected]

8

Who are you and what do you do?

I am Graham de Vall and I care about the world

around me and I’m sure you care too, don’t you?

What I’m not is some sort of eco-warrior! What

I do believe however is that we can easily take

steps to reduce the impact we have on the world

around us. After all, I reckon we are all guilty to

some extent of helping to pollute it.

I’ve always been vaguely conscious of the impact

I have on the environment. My dad always

nagged us about turning lights off when we left

the room (although I reckon this was probably

more for financial reasons than anything else)

and I joined the Scout Association as a Cub when

I was 8 years old. In the Scouts, amongst other

things, we learnt to care about the countryside

and making sure we left no litter.

Over the years I’ve always tried to maintain these

disciplines but never really expanded on them….

life’s been too busy for that and there have been

other priorities. Does this sound familiar? I

suppose I’ve become more aware of the impact I

have over the last 5 years or so and have tried to

be a bit more proactive, recycling more, growing

my own fruit and veg and that sort of thing – but

don’t you find that it’s not made easy for you? I

certainly have.

And then I discovered Wikaniko (pronounced

We Can Eco) It’s now easy to get all your eco

friendly stuff from one place. I was so impressed

I became a distributor, just look at my web

site, www.ecoways.biz it’s crammed full of free

downloads and stuff as well as nearly 1000

products to help you find a better alternative to

the chemical laden stuff we use everyday – and

it’s delivered to your door so you don’t have to

carry it home from the supermarket!

What do you like about Cardiff?

That’s easy, even though it’s a busy, vibrant,

modern capital city there are still some great

green spaces and parks - Bute Park is right in

Town, Roath Park and Victoria Park are also

fabulous. I’m sure you’ve got your favourite! It’s

also easy to get out of the city and you can be

on a beach, or in the mountains in the blink of

an eye.

Where is your favourite place?

I love being out in the Countryside for a bit of

walking but if I can’t get out of town then it’s got

to be the Bay, I’ve done a bit of Kayaking and the

new White Water Centre is great.

Favourite dining place?

I love Chinese food and for lunch it’s got to

be China China. In the evening the Riverside

Cantonese is fabulous. For an alternative culture

I love the Madeira. There’s loads of places I’ve

still to try though!

Sum yourself up in three words

I’m a typical Taurus, ‘nuff said.

Any long time ambition?

To look after my family, stay healthy, not have too

many financial worries and be able to help folk

where I can, to do the same.

I’m good at…Attention to detail, I’m precise and I have a good

work ethic.

I’m very bad at….

Knowing when it’s good enough! I’m a

perfectionist and sometimes that’s not good.

Does it always have to be so damn perfect? No,

it needs to be good, very good, maybe even

excellent but sometimes perfect is a step to far!

Damsels in Success Cardiff

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Michelle Clarke and I’m the leader of Damsels in

Success in Cardiff. Damsels in Success is a personal

development group that meets once a month to

inspire, energise and support fabulous women

who want more out of life - more success without

the stress!

At Damsels in Success we believe that you have to

take care of yourself first before you can take care

of anyone else. We create time and space every

month for you to put yourself first, to connect as a

community of inspired women, to discover who you

truly are and learn to live your lives fully and freely.

When we are completely connected to ourselves

then everyone benefits - our children, our partners,

our friends, family and community.

Every month we take a different theme - ranging

from health to career, relationships to lifestyle and

teach you some tools and strategies to make life

more effortless, more successful and more fun!

Come and join us!

What do you like about Cardiff?

I was born in Cardiff so I guess I’m a little biased! I

moved around a bit during my 20s and then settled

back in this fabulous city almost 7 years ago. I really

do love it here. I love the fact that we’re a Capital

city and all the facilities the city has because of that,

but I also love the fact that the footprint of the city is

small and our population is still pretty small as cities

go, so it has an incredibly friendly feel to it, and it’s

still easy to get from one side of the city to the other.

I walk a lot and it’s really easy to get about. I love

walking by the river, down the bay, through the city

centre - I’ve seen the city grow and develop as I’ve

grown up and I’ve loved watching it change into the

place that will now always be my home.

Where is your favourite place?

I have lots of favourite places, mostly for going out

walking with my little boy and German shepherd!

The Wenallt is great for woodland adventures and

we all love the nature reserve at Cardiff Bay. It’s

always really quiet and we walk through it most

weekends so get to see all the changes in the wildlife

throughout the seasons.

What does Cardiff need?

I think Cardiff needs a much better connection

between the city centre and the Bay, to really link

the waterfront to the centre. I often hear visitors

comment that they didn’t realise Cardiff was so

close to the sea! We need to make more of our

location. The building plots within the Bay where

projects have ground to a halt need to be sorted

out, and I would also love to see more unique

shops within the Bay. The restaurants and bars are

great, but more one-off shops selling local produce,

Welsh gifts, original clothing, artwork - would all

help to enhance the experience of spending time

there - for visitors and residents.

Sum yourself up in three words

Happy, energetic, loving.

Any long time ambition?

I want Damsels in Success to continue to grow and

develop in Cardiff, the community we are creating

is incredible and I know we will achieve fantastic

things together. I also want work much more with

small groups of women who are dedicated to

following their true purpose and really making

in difference to their lives, and the lives of those

around them. I want to write a best-selling book

and share my passion by speaking to as many

people as possible. Outside of work, my ambition

is to raise a happy, healthy family and for my

husband and I to build our dream home together

I’m good at…Attention to detail, I’m precise and I have a good

work ethic.

I’m very bad at….

Knowing when it’s good enough! I’m a perfectionist

and sometimes that’s not good. Does it always

have to be so damn perfect? No, it needs to

be good, very good, maybe even excellent but

sometimes perfect is a step to far!

Music is Fun (age 3½ - 5 years)

Music is Fun is a yearlong course which along with musical activities such as singing, games

and percussion, introduces piano skills. Our specially trained teachers build on natural ability

and interest to introduce all musical concepts in a creative and imaginative way.

Junior Keys (age 5 - 8 years)

which the children develop harmony, composition

and aural skills along with learning to play the

piano. Learning with others in small groups, there is

no time to get bored in action-packed lessons.

Piano Keys (age 8 years and up)

older children. The course is enjoyed by lots of

beginners and is a great way to learn the piano.

Everything from jazz and rock ’n roll to classical

and contemporary styles is here to play.

Other instrument tuition is also available including guitar, Band Club, drum kit and ‘Voices’

children’s vocal class as well as private piano and woodwind lessons. ‘Cocoa Keys’ and ‘Coffee

Keys’ are both popular adult drop-in piano classes which are a relaxed, informal way for

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Rebecca Lees and I’m a freelance

copywriter. I work with clients across RCT, Cardiff

and south Wales, writing effective content to

promote their business. This can be in the

form of brochures, leaflets, press releases and

advertorials or content for the business’ website.

Many clients already know about SEO - search

engine optimisation - but there’s a little more to

it than filling the website with lots of keywords!

SEO copywriting is a balance between making

sure new customers find you in the first place

and having an engaging business message on

the page when they do. I also blog for clients.

Refreshing your website frequently with relevant

blog posts is a great way of boosting your search

rankings, but for many businesses it can be hard

to find the time. That’s where I come in!

I was a journalist at the South Wales Echo before

becoming freelance in 2007. Since then I have

written for BBC Wales, Bella, Metro, MSN, the

Daily Express, the Big Issue Cymru, Visit Wales

and Media Wales, as well as commercial clients

including RCT Council and local businesses. This

extensive media experience is my USP - not only

is my copy accurate and lively but I also have

the contacts and news sense to gain maximum

coverage. I usually find that clients with even the

most ordinary business have a brilliant human

interest story behind them!

Where is your favourite place?

My favourite place in south Wales is Ogmore. I

have ’74 VW camper van, which is great for days

out with my two small children. We pack up a

picnic and buckets and spades and head for

the coast regardless for the weather. It clears my

head and wears them out - perfect!

Favourite dining place?

The best place in south Wales is the Bunch of

Grapes in Pontypridd. Appearances can be

so deceptive - what looks from the outside like

a run-of-the-mill local is a blissful, spacious

retreat. The imaginative menu is frequently

updated and each dish is cooked to perfection.

On top of this, its fantastic value and the staff are

unfailingly cheerful and welcoming. I always take

friends there and it never fails to surpass their

expectations!

What does Cardiff need?

Cardiff needs more funding to get small

businesses off the ground. Some support

is available - but only if you are spending

thousands on set-up costs in the first place.

It would be great if there was more help

with website and marketing costs for people

working from home. Having said that, the Welsh

Assembly Government and Skill set do provide

heavily subsidised training for those working in

the creative industries, so it’s not all bad!

Sum yourself up in three words...

Busy, inquisitive and fulfilled.

Any long term ambition?

With the sweeping changes in the media in the

last decade, I see myself moving away from

journalism and fully into PR. I’d love to move to

premises and employ a small team, with staff

working very flexibly but effectively. I’ve even

thought of a company name - but I won’t say as

it’s quite catchy!

I’m good at... Starting work at 6.30am so I can do a day’s work

before the afternoon school run.

I am bad at... Switching off. I make endless lists and, as I work

at home, this often means jumping up in the

middle of Monopoly with the kids to write down

a brainwave.

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Robin Campbell and my company

helps make property investment accessible to

anyone.

We have helped taxi drivers, paramedics and top

sports people achieve success in property over

the last 8 years.

We run free property investment schools in Cardiff

and the rest of the UK.

We decided to start running these schools purely

to educate people on how to build a portfolio of

properties learning from the experts.

People go to the garage for petrol and grocers

for food, but where do you go to learn about

property? At the schools people learn how to

build a property portfolio for capital growth over

the long term, how to choose where to buy, what

to look out for and how to avoid the pitfalls. Our

focus is to assist people to build a secure financial

future enabling people to spend more time with

family rather than having to work hard for their

money.

What do you like about Cardiff?

What I love about Cardiff is that there is so

much provision for people want to enjoy life

- the restaurants in the bay, the concerts at the

stadiums and the castle and the shopping and

leisure all within a stones throw from one another.

Where is your favourite place?

Cardiff Castle brings back fond memories

because it was where Mandy, my wife and I

went on one of our first concerts together and

saw Simply Red on a beautiful august summer

evening and the concert was befitting of the very

memorable location.

Favourite Dining Place?

The Cardiff Bayside Brasserie is a fabulous

restaurant - and I really appreciated the friendly

service and the food is top draw - I used to

work as a chef in the Channel Islands and really

appreciate good food cooked well and this

restaurant was memorable. Great atmosphere

and another great location.

What does Cardiff need?

Cardiff already does a great job marketing itsself

to the rest of the world and it has done very well

with such good facilities and investment over

recent years. So maybe if anything it needs to

maintain the momentum to secure its success.

Sum yourself up in three words...

Generous, Happy and Kind.

Any long term ambition?

I’ve always wanted to set up a youth outreach

centre for teenagers - and having had 4 children

all over 14 now, there is often nothing for kids

to do and I have so many ideas about how to

successfully provide an activity centre packed

with positive adult role models and create a safe

environment for them to come instead of all the

distractions that good kids get pulled by these

days. My business and my own portfolio will, God

willing, provide me the vehicle to fulfil my dream.

I’m good at... Making friends.

I am very bad at...

DIY - its something I am glad to bring in the

experts!

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Sarah Harris and I am the director

of Sarah’s Gifts and Hampers Ltd that was set up

last year. We offer gifts and hampers for every

occasion throughout the year, such as Mother’s

and Father’s day, Birthdays, New born Baby and

the Corporate market and these can be sent all

over the UK, as well as overseas. A key strategy

of our business is to change the perception of

a hamper, not only from just being a Christmas

present, but also being presented in several

different ways. You can choose from a range

of traditional baskets to modern, contemporary,

recyclable hamper gift boxes that have proved

to be a real success. Our business prides itself

on the fact that wherever possible it uses local

suppliers and the business was created with

both the gift buyer as well as the recipient firmly in

mind. We also offer a personal bespoke service

so that if you want to mix and match items from

the website or have special requests that you

would like us to source for you, then please call

us on 01989 770344.

Why do people use Sarah’s Gifts and

Hampers? We offer unique and different gift hamper

ideas that see lovely keepsake gifts amongst

the luxurious food and drink items. Examples

of our keepsake gifts range from After Dinner

Quiz games and tabletop fun games to scented

candles and porcelain inscribed tokens. We

deal with customers personally, who order from

all over the world to corporate clients such as

the Celtic Manor Resort - we ensure that we

make everything about your gift buying a truly

memorable experience for you and the recipient

of your wonderfully, chosen gift.

What’s your ambition for the business?

My ambition is to grow the business year on

year and to not lose sight of my values around

personal touch, putting the gift buyer and

recipient at the forefront of all that I do, using

local suppliers and employing locally to continue

to return profit to the local economy.

Where do you live?

I live in Herefordshire, just seven miles from the

Welsh border town of Monmouth and being

married to a Welsh man and having worked in

Cardiff for several years, feel very loyal to Wales.

What do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy running across the lovely fields and

countryside with my lovely dog that my hubby

named “Dai Bando” - don’t ask!!! I also enjoy

meeting new people and with the business, I

do this now more than ever in terms of various

shows I attend and networking events. I will

always support local events wherever possible

and I didn’t realise how rewarding the business

was going to be at first, as you do get to do many

events that are also supporting charities, as well

as just your own business.

What’s your ideal evening?

My brother and his wife live in the United States

with my adorable niece and nephew, so there

is no better time than when my parents and my

husband and I get to all be together and relive

our childhood memories.

Cardiff is a vibrant & multi-cultural city and its

energy is palpable! With its iconic buildings,

colours, styles, and a never ending choice of

where to eat, shop and relax - it’s definitely THE

place to be.

Where is your favourite place?

As a photographer, Cardiff spoils me. I love Bute

Park - especially in the spring, and also Cardiff

Bay where I can quite literally lose a couple of

hours behind my camera.

What does Cardiff need?

Cardiff Bay is in need of cheaper parking and

improved links with other parts of the city.

Sum yourself up in three words...

Creative, ambitious and original.

Any long term ambition?

For Lilies Photography to be able to offer Wedding

& Portrait Photography courses and have its own

high profile Studio & Gallery.

I am very bad at...

Delegating & being able to switch off.

BIG Thank you from all at Follow Your

Who are you and what do you do?

I am a Health and Wellbeing company, that is

looking to advise and help people with ailments,

that they don’t want to have to go to a doctor

for, or don’t want to take certain prescribed

medication etc. From skin disorders, stomach

issues, urinary issues, brittle nails, dry scalp,

eczema, psoriasis, IBS, Diverticulitis, arthritis, and

many many more, I will have a lotion, drink or gel

that they can use.

Not many people believe in the alternative

therapy, but I have many testimonials to back

up what I claim. From the sports enthusiast, to

the stay at home mum, from the builder to the

ballerina, I will have something that will help

everyone. I am also working closely with the local gym,

Fitness Solutions, Western Industrial Estate,

promoting Fitness along with Health and

Wellbeing, which we find work exceptionally well

together. We also have a partnership with the Coach

House bed and breakfast, in Rudry, this is set in

amazing country grounds and we work closely

providing clients with e two night stay linked to

the detox program, which we find successful and

enjoyable.

Why should people use Aloe Wellbeing?

The company has been successful for over 33

years, and has an advisory board with over 80

years experience between them, a GP, a Vet and

a nutritionalist, who I go to for advice on many

occasion, and they have helped hundreds, if not

thousands of people.

Where are you based?

I am based in Caerphilly and the surrounding

areas. Caerphilly is my main base, as I love

working closely to the castle.

What is good about Caerphilly?

People who I advise on Health and Wellbeing,

meet me close to the castle and take in the

beautiful surroundings, which automatically puts

you in a place of relaxation. There are plenty of

coffee shops and restaurants about for people to

come and relax, before we discuss their ailments

of health issues.

Sum yourself up in three words...

Determined, persistent and motivated.

Any long term ambition?

My long term goal, is to make as many people

aware of Health and Wellbeing issues, in the

young through to the elderly, and to make their

lives more comfortable. I have also helped many

build their own Health and Wellbeing business,

under the umbrella of this amazing company,

but with my guidance and support.

I am very bad at...

The only thing I would say I am bad at is......

Taking a day off! But with so many people to

help, I don’t want a day off!

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m Lee Griffiths and I started MGL Printers in 1992

after completing my apprenticeship ‘on the tools’

and working for other print companies.

Over the years I have gained vast knowledge

and experience of the industry which enables

me to advise customers on the best use of print

to promote their own business, however large or

small. In addition to promotional material such as

leaflets, brochures, exhibition stands and

banners we produce company essentials such

as order forms, purchase order and invoice pads,

continuous stationery and letterheads, to name

a few.If you need something printed, we can do it.

At MGL we offer a complete and professional

design, print and finishing service. Having all

the latest production equipment available to us

ensures we can find the right product at the right

price. Myself and my team put 100% effort into

managing every aspect of our customers’ work,

regardless of size or value.

What do you like about Cardiff?

I love the vibrancy of the city with its fantastic

music and social scene. It’s also an architecturally

beautiful city to just wonder around.

Where is your favourite place?

The Millennium Stadium. Not just a focal point

for Cardiff, there’s nothing quite like being there

and soaking up the atmosphere during an

International.

Favourite Dining Place?

You’re spoilt for choice but if I had to choose, La

Brasserie on Mary Street.

What does Cardiff need?

To promote itself more as a business centre and

help bring more investment into Wales.

Sum yourself up in three words...

Passionate, professional, dedicated.

Any long term ambition?

To develop the business into one where we can

be mutually beneficial to our clients and build

on our reputation as a professional and reliable

company.

I’m good at... Understanding what the customer needs and

advising them impartially.

I am very bad at...

Saying no to customers.
