NFL teams often set a goal of

    holding their opponents to 17

points or less each week, and

the Rams have done just that in

each of their first three home

    games this season.

Overall, St. Louis ranks 11th in

the NFL in scoring defense as

theyve given up an average of

just 19.2 points per game on theseason. The Rams narrowly

missed cracking the top 10 this

week as they trail Tennessee by

just 0.2 points per game in

    league rankings.

When the Rams gave up a field

goal to the Lions on Detroits

opening drive of the game last

week, it marked the first time all season St. Louis has allowed a f

quarter score. The three points allowed in the first quarter this yea

tied for the second-fewest in the NFL. The New York Jets lead

way with zero first-quarter points allowed, while the Green

Packers have also given up just a field goal like the Rams.

In the Rams three home games this season, opponents have a

aged just 12 points per game, which is tied for the fourth-best ho

total in the NFL this season.

KEEPING SCOREThrough five weeks, the Rams have been

one of the NFLs best defenses on third

    downs. Opponents have converted just

33.8 percent of their third downs against St.

Louis, which ranks the Rams eighth in the

    NFL in the category.

The Rams third-down success has been

crucial during the teams current two-game

home winning streak. Two weeks ago,

Seattle converted just 4-of-15 on third down

(27%) and was 0-for-6 in the second half.

    Steve Spagnuolos defense held

Washington to 1-for-10 (10%) on third-down conversions in Week 3,

the lowest conversion rate by a Rams opponent since the Rams held

the Steelers to 1-for-10 (10%) at Pittsburgh (10/26/03).

    Steve Spagnuolos attacking defense

has seen a dramatic increase in forced

    turnovers this season. Through five

games, the Rams have forced 10

turnovers. A year ago, they totaled 20

    in 16 games.

Prior to last weeks game in Detroit, theRams had forced at least two take-

aways in each of their first four games.

St. Louis has four interceptions and six

fumble recoveries on the season, which

puts them halfway to their 2009 inter-

    ception total as well.

    TAKE IT AWAY

S James Butler secures an interception

at Oakland for one of the Rams eight

    takeaways on the season.

The Rams defense has stood its ground when it counts this sea

as evidenced by their defensive statistics in the red zone.

When Detroit settled for a field goal on its opening drive last Sun

it marked six-consecutive red zone visits by St. Louis opponent

which the Rams kept the opposing offense out of the end zone.

That streak came to an end later in the game, but the Rams rec

in the red zone remains impressive. St. Louis is tied for third in

NFL in red zone defense on the year. Opponents have scored tou

downs on just 33.3 percent of their drives inside the St. Louis 20-y

line. Only Tennessee (26 percent) and Cleveland (28.6) have b

better defensively in the red zone than the Rams, and Baltimor

tied with St. Louis in red zone efficiency.

In all, the Rams have given up just 59 points on 15 possessions

    their opponents inside their 20.

RED LIGHT IN THE RED ZONE

S Oshiomogho Atogwe and LB Larry Grant lead a charge to stop Darren McFadden at the goal

line. The Rams are among the leagues best in red zone defense this season.

    One of the reasons the

    Rams have been so suc-

    cessful getting off the field

on third down is their oppor-tunistic pass defense.

    Opponents are completing

    just 56.9 percent of their

    passes against the Rams,

    which is the eighth-lowest

total in the NFL. The Rams

    Week 6 opponent, San

    Diego, ranks sixth.

The New York Jets lead the way at 51.1 percent, followed by the

Giants (54.7), Eagles (54.9), Chiefs (55.8), Tampa Bay (55.8), San

Diego (56.4), Baltimore (56.8) and St. Louis (56.9).

K Josh Brown hasnt had many opportuni-

ties from long range this season, but

throughout his career, long kicks have

been a big part of Browns repertoire. In

2009, he converted six of seven attemps

    from 50 or more yards.

The six 50-yard field goals tied the team

record for most field goals from 50-plus in

a season. Brown previously tied the

record in 2008 after Tony Zendejas set it in1993.

Since entering the NFL in 2003, Brown has made 25 field goals from

50-plus yards, most among active kickers during that time. Browns

66.7 career field goal percentage is fourth among active kickers (min-

imum of 10 field goal attempts) during that time period.

One of the biggest moves the Rams made this offseason was theacquisition of veteran DT Fred Robbins, and the addition of the 11thyear pro has paid early dividents.

Robbins had two tackles, including one for loss, last week at Detroit. Two weeks ago, he recovered a fumble and had two stops in a winover the Seahawks. In his Rams debut, Robbins recorded three tack-les, one tackle for loss and a sack. He also made an impact in Week2 at Oakland as he dropped RB Darren McFadden for a 3-yard loss

on a third-and-1 play that forced the Raiders to attempt a long fieldgoal, which they missed.

On the season, Robbins has 11 total tackles, including three for loss, three quarterback hits, a sack and two passes defensed.

Robbins came to the Rams after six seasons with the New YorkGiants. During two of those seasons, current Rams Head CoachSteve Spagnuolo was the Giants defensive coordinator. Its no coin-cidence that those two campaigns were perhaps the best of Robbinscareer as he tied his career high with 5.5 sacks in each of those sea-sons and was a Pro Bowl Alternate in 2008. He played a key role inNew Yorks run to their Super Bowl XLII championship.
