W oodlawn is a film based on an inspiring real-life story

about love and unity in a school torn by racism and

hate in the 1970s. In 1973, Woodlawn High School implemented

racial integration creating hate and terror among the community.

A spiritual awakening captured the heart of nearly every player

of the Woodlawn High School football team, including its coach

Tandy Gerelds. Their dedication to love and unity in a school filled

with racial division leads to the largest high school football game

ever played in the torn city of Birmingham, Alabama, and the rise

of its first African-American superstar Tony Nathan.

Elle Reid (Lily Tomlin) has just come through a breakup with her girlfriend when her granddaughter

Sage unexpectedly arrives needing six-hundred bucks before sundown. Temporarily broke, Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash as their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets.

Behind the scenes with director Paul WeitzFilm Guide: You have made big studio comedies and smaller character-driven films. What do you like best about each?

Paul Weitz: I think comedy is pretty depressing unless it’s character-driven. I’m drawn to making smaller films, and when my studio films have been successful, it’s been because they felt smaller and more intimate. Happily there is no connection between how funny and emotional a film is and what its budget is.

FG: Where did the idea for the film come from? Were any of the characters inspired by people in your life?

PW: I had had the idea in different forms, but it clicked only when I worked with Lily on the film Admission. I didn’t know her that well, but her intelligence rang like a clear bell. It made me think of a character and how much that character would have to offer a young woman under duress. I really don’t know though where it all came from. But I returned to the same dingy cafe every day to write it in a small white notebook.

FG: The film is very female-driven and centers around a young woman needing money for an abortion. What

do you say to some criticism you might get for making a film that focuses on such a divided women’s issue?

PW: The film is female-driven. According to the Guttmacher Institute, as of 2008, 30% of women had had an abortion by the age of 45. So it's unlikely that most people don't at least know someone who has faced the question of whether or not to end an unintended pregnancy. The film doesn’t make light of the issue. It puts it in the context of the characters who all have their own perspectives towards the issue.

FG: Are you trying to make a statement on your personal thoughts on the subject?

PW: I am not trying to make a statement in the film. In my personal life I am a feminist, and I would have said that even before Emma Watson’s lovely speech to the UN.

FG: Can you tell us more about the casting process for the film and the characters? This part seems tailor-made for Lily Tomlin. Did you have her in mind when you wrote the script?

PW: I wrote the script hearing Lily’s voice. Then I asked her to lunch and told her I had written a script for her and told her the story and gave it to her. I’m sure that was a bit nerve-wracking for her.

FG: How long did it take you to write the script?

PW: I thought about it in some form or other for a few years, and then wrote the first draft in about a month. Then I messed with it for a few more months.

FG: Can you tell us about a scene that turned out better on set than you imagined when writing the script?

PW: A number of scenes turned out better than I imagined because I was fortunate in casting. That’s what I hope for and it’s probably why I write plays and movies as opposed to fiction.

FG: What do you hope the audience will take away from Grandma?

PW: The film is largely about moving on from loss through wit and empathy and the ability to say “screw you.” I just hope a splinter of it will lodge in their memories.

Germany 1958: reconstruction, an economic miracle. Johann Radmann (Alexander Fehling) has just recently

been appointed Public Prosecutor and, like all beginners, he has to content himself with boring traffic offenses. When the journalist Thomas Gnielka (André Szymanski) causes a ruckus in the courthouse, Radmann pricks up his ears. A friend of Gnielka’s identified a teacher as a former Auschwitz guard, but no one is interested in prosecuting him. Against the will of his immediate superior, Radmann begins to examine the case and lands in a web of repression and denial, but also of idealization. In those years “Auschwitz” was a word that some people had never heard of and others wanted to forget as quickly as possible. Only Prosecutor General Fritz Bauer (Gert Voss) encourages Radmann's curiosity; he himself has long wanted to bring the crimes committed in Auschwitz to the public's attention but lacks the legal means for a prosecution. When Johann Radmann and Thomas Gnielka find documents that lead to the perpetrators, Bauer

immediately recognizes how explosive they are and officially entrusts all further investigations to Radmann. The young prosecutor devotes himself with utmost commitment to his new task and is resolved to find out what really happened back then. He questions witnesses, combs through files, secures evidence and allows himself to be drawn into the case to such an extent that he is blind to everything else—even to Marlene Wondrak (Friederike Becht) with whom he has fallen hopelessly in love. Radmann oversteps boundaries, falls out with friends, colleagues and allies, and is sucked deeper and deeper into a labyrinth of lies and guilt in his search for the truth. But what he ultimately brings to light will change the country forever....

Interview With Director Giulio Ricciarelli

Film Guide: How did you react when you were confronted with the theme for the first time?

Giulio Riccaiarelli: I thought the story was incredible. I was particularly unable to believe that many Germans in the late 1950s had never heard about Auschwitz. It was only in the course of my research that I concluded that this was indeed so. As a young person, I had always been under the impression that the Nazi period had been amply studied and treated in Germany after 1945 through history lessons, a variety of films and visits to concentration camp memorials.

But the truth is that after the end of WWII, just about nothing was treated comprehensively for several years; instead, there was an attempt to silence the dark past. This

was a chapter one simply did not talk about—or about the perpetrators—or about the victims. Of course there were people who knew about Auschwitz, but the majority of the Germans did not. This topic would have continued to be suppressed if four courageous people, a prosecutor general and three young public prosecutors, had not overcome all obstacles to push through their vision of the Frankfurt Trial—four heroes who changed Germany forever.

FG: How would you characterize your main character, the young public prosecutor Johann Radmann?

GR: Johann is a self-assured, very Germanic, rather formalist jurist with a humanistic education and clear moral values. His Achilles’ heel is his rigid black-and-white way of viewing things. At the beginning he thinks he knows what's right and what’s wrong. Only in the course of events does he realize that it's not up to him to judge other people. He can only conduct this trial with humility.

FG: In your film, you also provide a forum for the opposite side.

GR: Yes, this meant a lot to us. Of course we feel that we should absolutely confront our past. But the opposite position can also claim some good arguments for itself. The German Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer had set up the doctrine that one had to draw the line and spread the cloak of silence over the past. This was the official stance

that Fritz Bauer and his comrades-in-arms had to knock down. And the question posed by Senior Public Prosecutor Friedberg to Johann Radmann reduces it to one point: “Do you want every young person to wonder whether his father was a murderer or not?”

FG: To what extent were you able to borrow original quotes when writing the dialogues?

GR: Many statements by Fritz Bauer have been preserved, mainly through the work of the Fritz Bauer Institute. Of course we were also able to base ourselves on witnesses' statements from the trial. And Attorney Lichter’s perfidious argumentation that the “selection” was an act of humanity intended to save human lives really does stem from a lawyer’s defense strategy in the Frankfurt Trials. As to the historical facts, we are as correct and precise as possible. Only in conjunction with the inner life of the characters did we allow ourselves narrative liberties. We don’t want to give viewers a history lesson, but an emotional cinematic experience. That is why we’ve tried again and again to loosen up the action though humor, not through artificial slapstick elements, but through a gentle humor that arises from the characters. I feel it is wrong to say: “Oh my God, it’s a serious theme, you're not supposed to laugh!”

Their reporting eventually led to the resignation of Cardinal Bernard Law, who had hidden years of serial abuse by other priests, and opened the floodgates to other revelations of molestation and cover-ups around the world, which still reverberate today. For their efforts, the Globe team won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2003. Stanley Tucci portrays attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who achieved national acclaim representing the families of abuse victims.

Film Guide: What made the match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky something that captured the world’s imagination?

Ed Zwick: You need to remember this was a time when everything was politicized––the Olympics, the Vietnam War, everything. So as a kid from the Midwest watching this young guy taking on the Soviet Union, I was fascinated. Also, celebrity culture was just beginning. Because of this game, Bobby was suddenly world-famous. He was a source of curiosity and pride, even though there was something inappropriate about him. He wanted to make his own rules. He was unpredictable.

FG: In addition to being a suspenseful sports story, Pawn Sacrifice has the intrigue of a Cold War thriller.

EZ: At the time of the match, the Cold War was actually quite hot. Here was an opportunity for these two great ideologies to send out their two gladiators against one another. For the Soviet Union, chess was a great source of pride. They were quite confident that this would show their intellectual superiority over us. But there was this American kid going up against them.

FG: Bobby Fischer was a very complex figure, a genius who was also a bit unstable.

EZ: The collision of genius and madness is something that we as a culture have always been interested in, whether in Amadeus or A Beautiful Mind. We are fascinated by people who have these extraordinary abilities but must pay a price for having them.

FG: Tobey Maguire does a remarkable job bringing out all these different layers of Fischer’s character.

EZ: You always want an actor to be playing at least two things at once, but Tobey was doing three and four. There was the intellectual part of the game. Then there was the mind game, his need to dominate the other player. And there was his desire to have fun and be a person. But I think the part that most moved me was his isolation, how his gift inhibited him from having anything like a normal life. Tobey is a research fanatic. He read everything about Bobby Fischer, saw every piece of film, and listened to every utterance. It was amazing to see him immerse himself and be subsumed by this other person.

FG: And his opponent Boris Spassky is played by Liev Schreiber.

EZ: I think Liev is one of the greatest actors of his generation. In playing Spassky, Liev understood something very deeply about him––how he was a man who loved the game. In truth, Spassky was a generous and kind man. But he was a man caught the way that Fischer was caught. They were both pawns of their systems. They were the least likely avatars of their systems that anyone could imagine; yet there they were, facing each other.

A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, DreamWorks Pictures/Fox 2000 Pictures’

Bridge of Spies is the story of James Donovan, a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot.

In the 1950s during the early stages of the Cold War, tensions are rife between the U.S. and U.S.S.R., so when the FBI arrests Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), a Soviet agent living in New York, the fear and paranoia only escalate. Charged with sending coded messages back to Russia, Abel is questioned by the FBI but refuses to cooperate, declining their offer to turn on his country, and is detained in federal prison pending trial.

The government, in need of an independent attorney to take on Abel’s defense, approaches James Donovan (Tom Hanks), an insurance lawyer from Brooklyn. While highly regarded within the legal community for his profound skills as a negotiator, Donovan has little experience with allegations of this nature and magnitude and isn’t eager to get involved.

Donovan eventually agrees to represent Abel, as he is committed to the principles of justice and the protection of basic human rights and wants to ensure Abel receives a fair trial, regardless of his citizenship. As he prepares his defense strategy, a bond begins to develop between the two men, one built on mutual respect and understanding.

Sometime later, an American U-2 spy plane is shot down over Soviet airspace while on a reconnaissance mission, and the pilot, Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell), is convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison in the U.S.S.R. The CIA, while categorically denying any knowledge of the mission, is fearful that Powers may be coerced into revealing classified

information. Having witnessed Donovan’s impressive skills in the courtroom, CIA operative Hoffman (Scott Shepherd) secretly reaches out to recruit him for a national security mission of great importance. Fueled by a love for his country, unwavering belief in his convictions and a tremendous amount of courage, Donovan is soon on a plane to Berlin to negotiate a prisoner exchange between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
