ReadingKindergarten• Students will recognize that individual letters have sounds• Students will recognize that the sequence of letters in written

words represent the sequence of sounds in words

First Grade• Students will blend speech sounds using knowledge of letter-

sound correspondences to decode unfamiliar decodable one-syllable words

• Students will use comprehension strategies ( e.g. predict, confirm, re-read, self-correct etc.) to clarify meaning and monitor own reading

Second Grade• Students will learn new words indirectly from reading a variety of

literary and informational texts and other print sources• Students will use knowledge of story structure and story elements

to discuss and evaluate

accomplish a task, alone and with others• Students will use newly acquired vocabulary and complete

sentences during class discussions and in everyday speech

First Grade• Students will rephrase , paraphrase, and interpret what is heard in

order with some details• Students will dictate information for a variety of purposes

Second Grade• Students will show respect for and respond to peers and adults

when they are speaking• Students will share information using appropriate visual aids,

including technology tool

February 2009:• ELA/ESL panel and workgroup meet to review completed work• Feedback from Field – Questionnaire and/or sampling of forum participants

March 2009 • Standards and performance indicators presented to Steering Committee

for review

April 2009 • ESL workgroup reviews the draft standards and PIs in order to integrate

ELA/ESL Standards framework• Create survey instruments in order to receive feedback from the field
