REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S VIEWS

JULION VIEWS

THIS REGGAESTORY HAS AHAPPY ENDING

In the past I have opinedabout several aspects ofthis reggae genre of mine, pointing out the reasons as Isaw them, for the failure /s thatmay allow a band or artist fromachieving stardom, or sellingmusic or most importantly, making a living from their talent.

First Barrier: I pointed outour issues with “the System”!What system are you referringto? It is well chronicled and waytoo deep to go over once againbut what is significant to note isthe series of hurdles,

deliberately placed in ourcollective paths, we have yet tofind a solution to go over, through, around or even to digunder, barring our path toproduct sales. The ‘system’ isrelentless! It NEVER stops!

It is my contention thattrue talent, hard work as well ascreativity along with a huge doseof tenacity could break anyblockade! We also cannot affordto stop!

Second Barrier: Noinfrastructure! We have foundno way to collectively create aninfrastructure capable ofearning royalties from airplay orperformances, radio airplaynationally in ALL provinces, product distribution across thecountry or around the world, avenue / s in our possession toshowcase reggae year round, aCanadian reggae tour forperforming acts. Fifty years ofreggae and no infrastructure!Who’s to blame but ourselves?

Third Barrier: The stigmathat Canadian reggae artists arenot of a proper quality or evenclose to those that perform inJamaica. Who’s to blame for thisone? Well, instead of casting

blame, I will tell you of instanceswhere I have been to liveperformances where folks in theaudience ask me if the band orartist performing is actually fromCanada! Greatest compliment, yet the greatest insult I alwayssay! Yes, they are from Canada, yet, why have you never heardabout them? Back to the lack ofan infrastructure!

Another of our issues issome of the crap artistsinundating the internet, especially Facebook with craptunes that NO ONE wants tohear! Crap tunes that only theypost over and over and over andover again that NO ONE else willre-post for them! They becomethe standard for Canadianreggae so I implore the betterartists to upload more of theirtunes so Canadians as well asthe rest of the world can hearthe great songs that I get tohear!

Fourth Barrier: This one Icall the “second placementality”! Many of my peers, artists, promoters andcounterparts in the genre havereconciled themselves to thefact that since this is all thatthere is, well, this is all that

there is! We have never reallyrisen, so why bother trying? Imean, really, why bother trying?Well I’ll tell you! The Scotia andthe TD Banks have investmentsin what used to be The CaribanaCelebration, The Irie Festivaland the Jambana Festivals.Banks do not invest unless thereis profit! Cudos to theorganizers of all of these eventsfor getting corporate interestand monies but that ought to tellthe rest of us that our events, our cultures are worthsomething to ourselves and forus to invest in our own talent! Itold you that this had a happyending didn’t I?

Here it is: - Work together, apart! Huh? When a band orartist has a show, every otherperformer and entertainer in thegenre MUST take the time topromote that artist’s show! Nomatter whether you like theperson or not! If no onepromotes your shows, it maythat you are one of the ‘crap’artists so STOP! For the rest ofthe good ones, promote eachother! It is a numbers game! The more people that know, isthe more people that will go! Itis that simple! Grow allaudiences! I have seen it work!

SPECIAL MIX VIEWS

BURN PAGANCHRISTMAS?

Whenever I talk with myRasta friends we always

end up in a heated debate. Thenafter all the steam hasevaporated, we laugh about it,until the next time another topiccomes up. Well this time thetopic of Christmas came up (Ohno… I hear you saying, you didnot go there Special). Well forthose who know me, I just talkmy mind… Done… So anyway,my Rasta friend shouted out“Burn your Pagan BabylonChristmas!” So I shouted back,

“Well, Burn your Vegetables”...He found that funny. The realtopic then started. He said thateven though he enjoyedChristmas as a child, as a man,he now knows the TRUTH... Itold him that as a child, we areallowed to dream and havefairytales around us. Iunderstand that our childrenneed to know the truth, but Ifeel that our inner guilts, obsessions and fears, sometimes overpowers theinnocent times of being a child.

I want my children to growknowing the truth about Slavery,Apartheid and SystematicRacism, but I want them to beable to understand what I amsaying and be able to ask andparticipate in a conversation ofunderstanding with me, whenthe time arises. I do not wantthem to be fearful and create aparanoid view of the world, without having the mature toolsto deal with this newinformation.

This is the same stance thatI take with Christmas. Ipersonally enjoy Christmas. I

definitely enjoy the presents, thegiving and receiving of love andgifts (which we do all yeararound anyway). My house is awarm house, filled with love andnot paranoid, espionagethoughts. Do I believe that Blackpeople have been dealt badly,YES. Do I believe it is stillhappening, YES. Do I believethat it is possible for a man to beborn in the sun with hisbloodline and all accentors alsoborn in the sun to magically beborn with “Blond Hair and BlueEyes, hair straight and notanned pigmentation on hisskin???? H**L NO. Did I believethat Santa Claus (or SantaFraud, as my Rasta friends callshim) would bring me thatexpensive bike I saw on TV,when I was four years old, YES.Do I believe in him now that I aman adult? NO WAY HOSAY... Butdo I feel betrayed by my parentsor society for telling me this? AmI now, dysfunctional or confusedwith life (Hey, all my friends, donot answer that :-)

As parents, we have ourown rules and laws that wedecide to follow. Some of us

read the bible and take piecesout, that suits our life style.(That is why there are so manydifferent religions), (By the way, they all claim that their way isthe only right way), (mmm, nowwho is confused, anyway, let’sget back to the topic). What I amsaying is, choose how you feel tobring up your children and stopthe bullying of other peopleschoices. Live and Let Live andalso, “STAY OUT OF MYBUSINNESS”.

P.S. Burn Your Corn :-).Take Care until next time...Special Mix.

REWIND THISTHOUGHT

By: Pablo Naphtali

Hail Ras and Ras and Sistasof the heart. Wisdom is

paramount for us in thesetimes; its importance is secondto none of the virtues, exceptfor love and charity. The Africanpeople are at a very crucial anddecisive point in our journeythru this dispensation of time. It’s a time to be assertive andcourageous in the internationalarena. The thoughts andattitudes of people are nowexperiencing changes fromwithin, regardless of race orculture their eyes are openingup to the corruption of theworld systems in it’s presentstate. Many desire change, butchange to what?

Rastafari children have a

pivotal and essential role to playin these changes. People realizethat what we have been sayingabout health, environment, family, politics, religion andhuman relations on a whole hasbeen tested and proven in thislast century. Now low and beholdthe powers that be haveincreased their efforts to controland distract the populous, withscare tactics of killer viruses, terrorist threats, economicaldisasters and such alike. Ofcourse I am not saying thesethings don’t exist, but haven’tthey always? Is warfare new tomankind? Or disease andplagues? Isn’t economic statususually dependent on yourmilitary and exploitationabilities? So what is new? Welllet’s see, we now have worldsatellites, mass media andcommunication, which enablesthem to manipulate and controlmultitudes through the thoughtprocess of indoctrination, not somuch with religion this time, butwith what they have taught us ofscience and logic. The modernnews media moguls are thevoice of the new world order.

Spirituality is a now a hobbyand has nothing to do with thereal world. That’s what they areteaching. As usual Babylon flipsthings upside down and insideout, wanting to give us wrong for

right. The G-8 in the UnitedNations Assembly has not madeany effort to eliminate hungerand increase education andhealthcare, instead theysquabble about land, sea, andairspace rights, as well ascommerce. Basically they arehigh profile corporate businesspeople, discussing assets andlosses. Human rights issues andhumanitarian missions areturned over and over and arealways on the agenda fordiscussion with little actionsimplemented. With the wisdomknowledge and overstanding ofthese events Rastafari childrenmust always keep in mind I an IUniversal creed, it is as follows:

Ethiopian Prayer: Princesand Princesses shall come out ofBabylon, Ethiopians now stretchforth their hands onto God, Othou God of Ethiopia, Thy DivineMajesty, Thy spirit has come intoour hearts, To dwell in the pathsof righteousness, lead us, Helpus to forgive that we may beforgiven; Teach us love, loyaltyon earth as it is in Zion. Endowus with thy wisdom, Knowledgeand understanding to do thy will.Thy blessing to us, that thehungry may be fed, the nakedclothed, The sick nourished, theaged protected and the infantscared for. Deliver us from thehands of our enemies. That we

may prove fruitful in the lastdays. When our enemies arepast and decayed: In the depthsof the sea, in the depths of theearth, Or in the belly of thebeast, O give us a place in thyKingdom, Forever and ever,Selah

Keeping to the livity ofthese inspirational teachings, each of us as individuals canmake contributions in a verypractical and simple way, continuing the traditions ofpeace and love, starting in ourhomes and communities. Forthese few words I give thanks.

Words of H.I.M.: TheCharter of the Organization ofAfrican Unity has become theembodiment of all theaspirations of the Africanpeople. Oct 7, 1965.

“Even In This Century, WithFaith, Courage, And A JustCause, David Will Still DefeatGoliath.”

Words of Marcus Garvey:The thing to do is to getorganized. Keep separated andyou will be exploited, you will berobbed, you will be killed. Getorganized and you will compelthe world to respect you.

THE BLACKOLMECS

The Olmec were the firstpeople to establish

American civilization over4,000BC and laid many of thefoundations for the civilizationsthat followed. They are the oneswho first discovered that ittakes the sun 25,920 years tocomplete its orbit in our Galaxy. It is the Olmecs who taught theMayans and Aztecs about theDecember 21, 2012 end date, when our sun completes itsorbit and aligns with the BlackStar in our Galactic Centre. Themost familiar aspect of the

Olmecs is their artwork, particularly the aptly named“colossal heads.”

The colossal head at thetop of this page, weighing up to10 Tons, clearly shows that theOlmecs are Black people. Theyspoke a West- AfricanMandingo- Language andAnthropologist refers to theBlack Olmecs as “The MotherCivilization of America.” Theybuilt all the Ancient Pyramidsand Ancient Mounds in South,Central and North America. There are a couple of reasonswhy the Olmecs are soimportant. First, they used anddeveloped many thingsculturally and religiously thatwere later used by the Mayansand Aztecs and many othercultures. Second, they had awide influence in their day, which gives us reason to believethat they are responsible forspreading the religious ideas ofthe ‘ab-original’ people wholater came to inhabit South,Central and North America.

In 2006, archaeologistsunearthed a city that theybelieved was influenced by theOlmecs, only 40km / 25mi southof Mexico City. A new urbansociety related to the Olmecssuggests that their influencemay have been stronger than weever suspected. They wereknown as the Xi and are directlyrelated to the Muurs andWashitaw whose territoryextended from Mississippi up toMississauga here inCanada. JEMINI IS A STARIN THE MAKING

Possessing an absolutelycharming personality, ton

loads of natural poise, heaps ofpotential, and an outpouring ofpassion, Canadian songstressJemini, embody the ‘four P’s’. Atalented singer, Jemini, whorules under the sign of Gemini, was born to Jamaican parents inCanada, and honed her skills in

the church choir. She recallsthat she actually fell in love withsinging at Elementary Schoolwhere she was formallyintroduced to music. However, some would say she has it in hergenes, as her father, who is alsoa singer and formed part of thegroup The Quartet. Hisencouragement was all Jem (asshe is affectionately called)needed to pursue her true love, singing. By the time shereached Junior High, Jeminiwas fully immersed in the craft.

In her quest for the rightmusical genre, Jemini startedout doing R&B, following in themusical footsteps of WhitneyHouston and Mary J. Blige, whose soulful delivery andpowerful vocals resonated withher. However, with reggaepumping through her veins, itwas not surprising that Jeminilater discovered a symbioticbond with Lovers Rock. Therefore, since 2009, thisCanadian songstress ofJamaican ancestry has beenmaking reggae her music ofchoice, writing songs, seekingout the best producers andperforming at events that aresure to secure her a strong fanbase. And, Jemini has beenreceiving as much love as she

has been giving, as she stepsout as a conscious flag bearerfor reggae music. Her song-writing ability has also comeunder scrutiny as hereffective lyrics and consciousmessages have captured theattention of critics and fansalike. Jemini declares that sheuses her personal experience orthose of friends and family asthe basis for her songs.

“I cannot sing just forsinging sake, I must sing fromexperience.” says Jem whenasked about her lyrical content. With this connection to song,Jemini is easily able to write herown lyrics from a truthful stanceto which all listeners can relate, especially those who have eitherlived or have had similarexperience. With Jem there is nosugar coating! Undoubtedly, thismulti-talented artist, who is alsoa nurse and a marketer, ispoised to transcend the musicscene with her soulful brand ofLover’s Rock and Roots Reggaemusic. Her debut track, “NoTurning Back”, has been wellreceived and is in rotation onreggae playlists world-wide. Thevideo for “No Turning Back” wasshot on location in New York byrenowned director BermanFenelus who has also worked

with the likes of Chris Brown,Busta Ryhmes, Gyptian and theVictoria Secret brand just toname a few.

On the performance side,Jemini has spread her wingsthroughout North America andhas worked on the MontrealReggae Festival, the annualBirthday Celebration of HIMHaile Selassie in Toronto, opened for Rev Jesse Jackson inDenver Colorado,USA, Alpena Detroit Michigan inSeptember for World PeaceDay. Jemni was well receivedand embraced by the crowd inMichigan. She also received theYork Region Police Award forBlack History Month in Canadaearlier this year from the Mayor. In Jamaica, Jemini hasperformed on CurryFest and islooking forward to doing moreshows within the widerCaribbean. Passionate aboutphilanthropy, Jem’s pet area isthe empowering of women andchildren. On her recent trip toJamaica, she distributed clothesand shoes to those to whom shehas committed herself throughher foundation. Jem’s Mantra: “IWill Stand Against All Odds”

ZVULOON DUB SYSTEMREGGAE ETHIO-DUB LIVEFROM ISRAEL

Zvuloon Dub System, Israel’s leadingReggae band. Adopting their name

from one of the twelve tribes of Israel, theband was formed in 2006 by the Smilanbrothers. They shared the same passion forroots reggae and dub, with influences froma variety of music styles, like Ethiopian jazzand rare grooves from the 70’s, USA’s soul, funk and jazz, alongside with Israeli mizrahi(oriental) music. Zvuloon Dub Systememerges from a multicultural middle-eastern music scene. Similarly to the majorproducers of reggae, like Lee ‘Scratch’Perry and King Tubby, the band is also keenon creating not just their own music buttheir own sound. All their tracks areproduced, recorded and mixed in the band’sstudio, representing a unique blend of a richcultural heritage, which can be heard in thedebut album, “Freedom Time”. The albumconsists of 9 previously unreleased originalsongs, and a groovy reggae version of

‘Voodoo Child’ by Jimmy Hendrix. Itpresents the band’s vision of contemporaryroots reggae and dub. The album wasreleased early 2012 with guest appearancefrom leading Jamaican DJ, Ranking Joe.

While the album has a laid back andsoulful vibe to it, the live performancepresents the more energetic side of theband, with a special sound that developedduring years of live performing. The bandachieved great success in the reggae scene, but also amongst many music lovers fromother genres. Zvuloon Dub System is an 8piece band with some of the cream of Israeliunderground musicians. The lead singer, Gili

Yalo, who was born in Ethiopia, walkedthrough the desert at the age 4 on anexhausting journey with his family to thepromised land - Israel. Going throughdramatic and extreme situations, he sang allthe way to his beloved, and from thatmoment Gili’s parents knew he was going tobe a singer.

On stage, the band brings a freshbreath of vibes from around the world. Witha powerful lead singer, groovy rhythmsection and an eccentric brass section,Zvuloon Dub System creates a heavy Dubexperience and gives a new meaning to theword reggae. The message of the band ispeace, love, solidarity and equal rights to all, which, coming from such a controversialcountry, is spot on! The band backed someof the top reggae singers visiting Israel suchas the lead singer of “Israel Vibration”, AppleGabriel and UK DJ Brother Culture. The bandopened the stage for some internationalreggae singers such as Don Carlos. In 2011the band toured in Canada and Cyprus andplayed all around Israel including in thebiggest local festivals.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S INTERVIEWS

REGGAEXCLUSIVECATCHES UP WITH KINGSHADROCK FOR A CHAT

REGGAEX: Greetings King Shadrock,it’s a pleasure linking up with you after sucha long time. I knew you since back in the daywhen you were known as Little Buju, youcertainly mashed up Toronto with your deepbass voice and energetic stage act. Wecertainly missed your presence on the stagein Toronto. Tell us when and where youdisappeared to and tell us about yourtransition from Little Buju to King Shadrock.

K S: Greetings Empress and oneblessed love to you mother earth, as youalready know I was greatly influenced byBuju Banton and especially since I could asyou would say mimic his voice, I was dubbedLikkle Buju. Opening for many internationalacts, one of my trips led me to Montrealwhere I met a reggae group from Seychelles(Africa), at that time they were good friendswith my brother so after the show I stayedaround to see the vibes and just to enjoy thescenery, well one thing led to another, theywere going on tour in Seychelles and invitedme to be the opening act. That’s where theball started really rolling; now here we are 5African tours later.

REGGAEX: When did you first startsinging/deejaying and who or what inspiredyou to become a singer/dj?

K S: I started like most reggae singerssinging in church, but I was not just a singerI was a preacher, even now when I go backto Jamaica some people still call me‘preacher’ so I would say I started at 11years old in Garlands church. I find a little bitof inspiration from every artist from BobMarley to Vybz Kartel because I know thatthe artist has something to say and if youlisten carefully you will hear.

REGGAEX: For real King, what is thename of your first single and who producedit?

K S: My first single was called ‘’Know diMan’’ a Rasta song I did with High EnergyBand at 1996 or 97, it’s a song about Rasta

even though at that time I was a ‘bald head’.

REGGAEX: Tell us King, what would youterm yourself to be? A Canadian ReggaeArtist, a Jamaican Reggae Artist or anInternational Reggae Artist?

K S: I am a Jamaican living in Canadasinging international reggae music (laughs).

REGGAEX: I love that, it rolls off thetongue too, I think I will use that one(laughs). Please tell us how you put togetherThe Untouchable Band? Who are themembers of the band and what part do theyplay?

K S: Well, where should I start? It’sbeen 5 years since I’ve been trying to puttogether the ultimate reggae band, studyingthe music business and the rise and fall ofmany groups. I learnt a couple of things likea band must have the same goal and all mustwork together to achieve that and mostimportantly there must be one person whohas the final say. Like we say back home “toomuch rat can’t dig one hole”. So we all haveresponsibilities individually, the musiciancome from all over the world USA, Europe,Africa, Morocco, Haiti, Canada, Guadeloupeand of course Jamaica. Their musical styleranges from jazz, rock, pop, funk, zouk, konpa and reggae.

REGGAEX: Wow that is quite a mix ofmusical styles, tell us about some of yourprevious releases, who are some of themusicians you worked with.

K S: I’ve work with Mr. Cooper, MarkSteele and Tonya P from Toronto just toname a few Toronto artists. I’ve worked withover 50 different artists in Montreal andEurope and Africa, I just released a newtrack on the Downtown Riddim called ‘’Nuhmek we goffa’’ which also features Sizzla,Turbulence, Lutan Fyah, Perfect and a hostof Canadian based artists. I also have 2singles with super reggae group Dub Inc. Mybrethren Prophecy Izes from Jamaica hasfeatured me on his album called “Rise up”.King Shadrock & the Untouchable Band isnow currently putting together our firstalbum as a band, it’s gonna be hot!

REGGAEX: Tell us where you seeyourself and the Untouchable Band in thenear future.

K S: I see us as a driving force in reggaemusic representing Canada on aninternational level.

REGGAEX: What do you think is thecurrent state of reggae music in Canada andwhat do you think we can do to make itbetter?

K S: I think that reggae is in adisgusting state, like for instance the rapperin America per say has a following and asupport from their States or City. In our Townor City, which reggae artist in Canada cansay that, no matter how hard we try? Andthen we have these so called reggaeexecutives who buy and sell out di ting fidem friends and clients dat nuh give poorartist a fighting chance and it doesn’t stop

there, we don’t really have a 24 hrs reggaeshow and this we need to fix. And the JunoAwards, what’s a best reggae recordingaward? The artists are not producers soeven there, dem short change you. We needfi come together as a reggae community andmake it happen for our artists and the reggaewill be recognized in Canada.

REGGAEX: Any upcoming projects, collaborations? Which producers / artistswould you like to work with in the future?

K S: Fortunately for us we always havesomething in the oven burning and onJanuary 19th, 2013 Montreal Quebec willwitness a show like never before at a venueowned by Circle du Soleil called la Tohu, myself and the Band are preparingsomething special for the reggae lovers inQuebec. La Tohu is the place you play beforeyou make it. Yes, I would love to collaboratewith Queen Ifrica, she is a great inspirationto us and as she says, ‘’in time like these, wereally miss our hero’s”. In regards toproducers, we are about producing our ownmusic.

REGGAEX: Give some words of wisdomto the upcoming reggae artists.

K S: Dream, dream big, work hard, veryhard and most of all believe in you cause ifyou don’t nobody will.

REGGAEX: Tell your fans somethingabout King Shadrock that they do not alreadyknow.

K S: You might not know that I make thebest jerk.

REGGAEX: (laughs), Nope, I sure didn’tknow that one. I must say a big thank you fortaking the time out to chat with us King, welook forward to seeing King Shadrock & theUntouchable Band live in Toronto in the nearfuture.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE INTERNATIONAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHTGUYANESE MUSICICON PAMELAMAYNARDDEAD AT 58

September 4th, 1954 –November 25th, 2012

Pamela Maynard was a longtime friend of mine. When

I was just a little girl living inNew Amsterdam, BerbiceGuyana, I remember hearingthis song playing in my parent’shouse and on the radio, thepowerful vocals of PamelaMaynard coming through theairwaves with her hit song“Lost, Lonely & Helpless”, thissong haunted me from the day Ilearned that she was sick in thehospital battling breast cancer, right here in Toronto. It was inJune of 2012 that I decided tocontact Pam after a few monthsof not linking with her, I knewshe was constantly travellingaround performing, England,USA, Africa or the Caribbean. Itried her phone numbers, heremail, her Facebook inbox, butto no avail. I figured she wasaway on tour or something so Ididn’t worry about it. A weekbefore she died, I received acall from popular Guyanesepromoter Sherlock Shepherd, also owner of Celebrity TouchHair Studio, who asked mewhen last I had talked to Pam, Ipromptly told him that I tried tocontact her numerous times forthe past few months so shecould perform on theReggaeXclusive RecognitionAwards held on June 29th, 2012but to no avail, and then wenton to tell him that maybe shewas on tour. He promptly toldme that she was not on tour butvery ill in the hospital. I wasshocked and appalled when Ifurther learned that she wasfighting breast cancer and thatshe was going through

chemotherapy. To cut a longstory short, I did not get achance to see Pam in thehospital because at the timewhen I was told of her illnessthe family was trying to keep itprivate and so I respected theirwishes.

I later got a call thefollowing Saturday, Nov 24th,2012 from Sherlock again whenhe told me that I should go seePam, I told him I will go see heron Monday 26th. He then saidfor me to try to go that same dayas Pam wasn’t responding totreatment and it wasn’t ‘lookinggood’ for her. I told him to ‘stoptalking stupidness’ that Pamwould be fine and well for me tosee her on Monday. On SundayNovember 25th, 2012 I receiveda call from my sister Nicky whohad seen a post on Facebook

that Pamela Maynard had died at8:15AM that same morning. Iimmediately felt weak and sickto my stomach. This wassurreal, Pam wasn’t dead, notthe Pamela Maynard that I knew,it took me a while to come togrips with the fact that she wasgone. The last time I saw andtalked with her was at a showput on by Guyanese promoterAubrey Langhorn. She was asfull of life as usual and I justcouldn’t wrap my head aroundthe fact that she was so sick tothe point of being dead now andI never even knew she was sickand battling breast cancer. Thisis a lady who stood up for me ata time when I didn’t even expectit. She had a kind heart and agood spirit. There are notenough words to express thesadness I felt when she died. Iconstantly heard her song “Lost,Lonely & Helpless” in my head, itwould not go away, it broughttears to my eyes, I couldn’t hearthat song without tearing up. Ihave finally come to terms withthe fact that she is dead and Ifeel joy knowing that she is in amuch better place, a place

where she will feel no pain andstress, a place where she will bemade whole again, a placewhere she will be singing withthe heavenly choir. PamelaMaynard was one of Guyana’sbrightest shining lights, she willnever be forgotten, and hermusic and her legacy will liveon. To Sonja and Samantha, hertwo daughters, you must beproud of your Mom, she was aforce to be reckoned withmusically and I’m sure she islooking down on you saying todry your tears as she is in abetter place. Rest in perfectpeace Pamela, we love you.

TOP GUYANESEARTIST YONNETTEHOOPER AKAMYSTIQUEREMEMBERSPAMELA MAYNARD

Pamela Maynard, a sister, friend and idol, someone I havealways looked to for inspiration.

She will be dearly missed. Thisgreat icon and Guyaneseambassador, like my father, thelate great Eddie Hooper, LadyGuymine, and many more whohave departed this earth, we thechildren of these great peoplemust respect, honor, and carryon their legacy, with God’s kindblessings.

DJANGO PANFYAH GRIEVES FORLONGTIME FRIENDPAMELA MAYNARD

Before I get into anything Iwould like to send outcondolences to Sonia, Samanthaand the rest of Pam family.

Pammy is one of Guyana’sfinest vocalist, artist, musician

and entertainer that the world isyet to discover. I will go so far tosay she is one of the best fromthe Caribbean as well. She hasseven genres of musiccomfortably under her roster ofmusic on an International level.Being a music student at theUniversity of Guyana my visionwas to work with the best aftergraduation, and Pam wasnumber one on the list. My firstencounter with her was at theNational Culture Centre inGeorgetown, Guyana. She wasthere to perform for a GuyanaAirways Event, somewherearound 1994-95. I was a youngkeyboard player/ studentworking with the MischievousGuys Band who was booked forthe show. When Pammy came onstage she came down from theroof hanging down on a rope, thewhole place went bazaar fancrazy, I was blown away by herpresentation, it was if I wasseeing Michael Jackson, I had tostay focused and remember Iwas a part of this. What made itmore memorable for me waswhen Pam came over to me andsaid “hi” with a charming smile.

I met her in Canada again,at the Canadian Reggae MusicAwards in 2001, I was there withmy newly formed Band called‘Xplosion’ which comprised ofpurely Jamaican musicians, Iwas the only Guyanese. I mustmention Floppy the bass playerwho is from Manchester,Jamaica. When we were at theshow and Pammy came on stagesinging Misty Blue, she lay onthe ground singing with emotionand expression, and the bassplayer followed her while playingthe bass, then she got up andtold him “let me see how yougoing to get up now”, and thewhole crowd laughed becausethey knew he needed at leastone of his hands to support hisbalance. Floppy never forgotthat. (Continued on Page 17)

GUYANESE MUSICICON PAMELAMAYNARD

(Cont’d. from page 16)

He was at her funeralpaying tribute.

Pammy was able to crossborders and boundaries throughher music and had the ability toconnect to people because ofher grassroots upbringing. I cantell because I’m a Rastaman whohave faced many stereo typesfrom fellow Guyanese, but notPammy, she had a sense of whatlife is all about on and off stage. We became friends since we metin Canada, she introduced me toone of her daughters Sonjawhom I always saw with her, shetold her daughter “this is a manof honor”, and her daughterstarted to call me Uncle Django.I laughed so much because shemade me feel like an old manback then, but it was out of

respect that she endorsed aRastaman like that. So I reallyhad Pam in my heart as a truefriend, a sister and even family, she came to my house manytimes.

My biggest project withPam was in 2003 right after theCanadian Reggae Music Awards, she got a contract with TrimarRecords to record a Gospelalbum and she chose me to workon the project. It was a blessingfor me to have the opportunity towork with Pam in the studio. Sheis a perfectionist when it comesto music; she understands how astudio works in terms of studiotime, producing, respect andpatience. I must mentionWinston Hewitt because he wasthe producer on the set, and heis the CEO of the CanadianReggae Music Awards whichwas running for 20 years. Thatproject enabled me to expressthe best of me musically so far,not taking away anything fromanyone else whom I’ve workedwith in the past, but just to saythat Pam is extraordinary andevery great musician would liketo work with her. She was likeGladys Knights, Aretha Franklyn,Patty LaBelle, Dorothy Moore, and so on. The album we workedon is called “Sold out for Jesus”.It comprised of 13 beautifultracks, all gospel, it is alsoshowcased some of Pammy’sunknown vocal exponent andversatility, she touched all kind

of styles including countrygospel. This is an albumeveryone should have. Jah blessPammy. It was a successfulproject, I was able to buy myfirst car with part of the moneyfrom that project, and also seemy work glorified by others in abig way because Pammy alsowon an award for that album.

Pammy recognized me asan artist, in the sense that ifanyone asked her for an artist toperform at an event, she wouldrecommend me to people allover the world and tell them“check out D’jango Pan Fyah heis the best” and I said “wow, bigup Pam.” I remember whenshe recommend me as an artistand Donna Makeda to performat a Caribana event put on byGuyanese promoter Mr. AubreyLanghorn a few years ago, thatwas huge for me as well becausenot many people recognized meas an artist. That’s how close Iand Pammy was. PamelaMaynard contributedsignificantly to the music andentertainment industry inGuyana, the Caribbean, NorthAmerica, Europe, Africa andeven Asia, belching out tuneslike “Lost Lonely & Helpless”,her hit song which she mostlyknown for. I would like to closeby saying “Pammy I miss you butI will never forget you, throughout your life you inspiredand also encouraged me a lot, thank you. Pammy, we have one

more project in Zion when Ireach there. Bless.”

A WORD FROM TOPGUYANESEMUSICIAN “SMALLMAN”

BUNNY WAILER ISNOT HAPPY WITHSNOOP DOGG (IMEAN SNOOP LION)By: Delroy “Special Mix” Holness

Ijust got off the phone withthe reggae legendary iconand only living member of theoriginal “Wailers”, theHonourable “Bunny Wailer”. Iwas also blessed to speak with“Family Man”, the bass player ofthe Wailers. As well as talkingwith Bunny about why theWailers had parted and theemotions that he went throughwhen Bob Marley and Peter Toshdied, we also spoke about thepresent situation he is dealingwith, in regards to the new nameof Snoop Dogg, now aRastafarian and now calledSnoop Lion. I told Bunny, I heardthat he was the one who namedSnoop Dogg, Snoop Lion. Bunnyreplied, that is true. I then asked, how did that name transpire? Hesaid that Snoop came to Jamaicawith the idea of doing a songwith Bunny Wailer. Bunny agreed, but as they got talking Bunnysaid he did not feel comfortablecalling Snoop, “Dog”. He said noperson should call themselvesDog, so seeing that HaileSelassie surrounded himself withplenty lions he would then nameSnoop Dogg “Snoop Lion”. Theirfriendship was great whilstSnoop Lion was in Jamaica. Butthat may have gone a little sour,as Snoop Lion decided on hisreturn from Jamaica, tocapitalise on the new name(other than for personal use) andhas now commercialised thename Snoop Lion with nopermission or compensation toBunny Wailer.

I asked Bunny what is SnoopLion’s response to this change?Bunny said that he has tried onmany occasion to discuss thiswith Snoop Lion, but have had no

replies to his calls from Snoop orhis people. This has left him alittle concerned and has nowstrained the friendship hethought he had with Snoop. Now,due to this lack of communicationfrom Snoop Lion, Bunny Wailerhas now commissioned a lawyerin the UK, who has written toSnoop Lion. Bunny told me thathe wishes Snoop Lion would “DoThe Right Thing”. I asked if Snoophad mentioned publicly thatBunny Wailer had named himSnoop Lion? He said that SnoopLion had mentioned it in aninterview, but Bunny said, to usethe name commercially withoutany verbal and or writtenagreement was not welcomed atall.

I mentioned to Bunny that, adocumentary of Snoop’s rebirthas a Rastafarian called“Reincarnated” had its worldpremiere, September 2012, at theToronto International FilmFestival (TIFF). I asked if he knewof this, seeing that he was alsofilmed in this documentary. Hesaid he was not aware that adocumentary was being madeduring Snoop Lion’s visit toJamaica and he also did not signany appearance clearance to beincluded in this documentary.Bunny acknowledges that withoutcommunication with Snoop Lionand some form of resolution, theuse of the name Snoop Lion, theBunny Wailer appearance in thedocumentary and any othermonetary gains from the use of“Snoop Lion” could be halted, ifthe next step was courtproceedings. This “SnoopDogg/Lion” world exclusive was abonus to my already enjoyableinterview with Bunny Wailer. Andin the next coming articles, I willbring you more insight into theworld of Bunny Wailer and theWailers history, both past andpresent...

REGGAEXCLUSIVE RADIO PERSONALITY SPOTLIGHT

GEORGE BARRETT’SREGGAE SHOW ON CFRO100.5FM AND THEROCKERS SHOW CITR101.9FM

(Continued from Sept. 2012 Issue)

His works are acknowledgedinternationally, his selfless service

widely respected. There are very fewbroadcasters who have enjoyed such a longand fertile career as George Barrett, and I’mproud to call him ‘friend’”. -Roger Steffens,Chairman, Reggae Grammy Committee;Founding Editor the Beat.

According to Denise Jones, CEO of Jonesand Jones Productions in Toronto,

“George continues to play a vital role inbranding reggae on the west coast. With hisknowledge of venues and of course playingthe music and promoting shows, he wasintegral to helping us mount reggae toursacross Canada for Freddie McGregor, Culture,Leroy Gibbons, Fujahtive and short drops withCulture Shock and Chester Miller. As foundingchair of the reggae committee at the JUNOS,George also helped to get the word out to westcoast artists and helped to make the reggaecategory beyond the east/central borders.”

George had a hand in the career of one ofCanada’s finest reggae bands, the Sattalitesand worked closely with Leroy Sibbles whilehe was in Vancouver. That was a long time agoand times have changed as has the music. When asked to comment on the current stateof reggae and where he’d like to see the musicin the next 30 years, here what Barrett had tosay?

“The current state of reggae music hasimproved over the years, but one has toalways look back to where the music camefrom. In the early years of the music, therewas Ska, Rock Steady, Reggae and now,Dancehall; really and truly the music haschanged so rapidly. The so-called dancehallmusic of today is good in some ways-it hasopened the door for other people who may

have never listened to real reggae music; itopens the door for music such as Bob Marley,Culture, Peter Tosh, Third World, Jimmy Cliff, and Luciano to name a few, to be listened to.Unfortunately, the negative aspect to thiscurrent state of reggae and dancehall music isthe lyrics these young artists are using. It isnot acceptable! The music itself is dancemusic and young people love it. I am a radiohost, DJ and selecta, I have to play some of it,but today reggae dancehall music is all aboutthe bling bling and the money. Producers haveto be held accountable for the music that theyproduce.

I don’t think I’ll be around in the next 30years, but if I am, I would be pleased to seesomebody start a real reggae festival inVancouver! I would like to see more venuesopen up for reggae music and have morecommercial radio stations playing the music. Ilike that on radio you are able to reach a widevariety of people that you normally wouldn’t beable to reach and you can dialogue aboutmusic and cultures, while having fun.” GeorgeBarrett Radio Shows Sundays Rockers Show12Pm /3Pm Citr 101.9 Fm

I am loving themoves, we have big plans for theshow which we are now on our30th show, I will make it like noother, I will keep the great vibesand the blessings of music in anyflavor alive and ‘live’ to theinternet world.

REGGAEX: I have known youfor quite some time now and havealways seen you promotingReggae music and Reggaeartists. Recently, you went onestep further by becomingCanada’s newest female reggaerecording artist.Congratulations. Tell us who orwhat inspired you to start singingand why reggae?

LADY J: Well first, thanks forthe big up, my inspiration wasfrom Bob of course, and then over

the years it became Echo Minott,Half Pint, Luciano, oh so many, and then to see artists like DonnaMakeda and Queen Pettreen hasreally given me the boost asanother female Reggae artist,it has been keeping my dreamalive. In Jamaica, I told my newmanger Janet Giannone that Ireally want to record my songnow… “Step It up Baby”.

REGGAEX: Tell us about themaking of the single you areworking on right now in thestudio. What is the name of it,who are the other artists featuredon it, who wrote and produced it,who are the musicians you areworking with on this project andwhich studio are you arerecording the single at.

LADY J: My song, called“Step it up Baby” was a littlepersonal. I met a man, he sweptme off my feet and went awaynever to see him again. I wrotethe lyrics and had a special way Iwanted It sung, so I found theartists I wanted to work with. Why these two men? These twomen have great spirits.

The artist included on myfirst single are: Canadian Lady J,Norval Edgehill and Nitty Kutchie.I am recording at Chop ChopStudio in Negril to voice with theother artists on the riddim veryshortly. Daddy Sizzla was a bigpart of this single recording, hetook me to the studio and mademe sing, thanks Daddy Sizzla, hewill soon be here in Canada.

REGGAEX: I heard a piece ofthe new single and I was blownaway, I never knew you were sucha good singer, you have a verysmooth, melodic voice. Pleaseexpress to us how you felt andwhat your thoughts were whenyou were in the ‘voice booth’recording your very first single. Also, what or who made youcollaborate with Norval and NittyKutchie on the song?

LADY J: Ha ha ha…I am stillin shock seeing the people’sreaction to my new song; it justputs tears in my eyes as my songis truly from my heart. Love isgreat, but be real, ya dun noeveryone needs to “step it up”,the teachers, parents, police, doctors, the list goes on. Most of

all I was scared of what peoplewould think but I was so excitedto know that I, Janet Ryder willrecord a song finally. The otherartists are my personal friendsand they knew what I wanted onmy song so I choose them both. Itis ‘mad’ and a very happy songabout just stepping it up nomatter what you are doing.

REGGAEX: Being a player inthe reggae music business forquite some time now, tell us whatyour thoughts are on the state ofreggae music in Canada and whatyou think can be done to make itbetter.

Konshens has been mashing upthe airwaves with his brand ofDancehall music. With mega hit song“Gyal Ah Bubble”, Konshens hasbeen in great demand and isconstantly touring the world. Thisartist is not only an excellentsongwriter, but he is also a verydynamic and electrifying stage act.Since arriving on the Dancehallscene, Konshens has been ‘takinglife’ in the dance and stirring upgreat excitement whever he appears. With his ‘signature colored hair’,Konshens is ‘current’ and ‘up tothe time’.

SPICE

The Dancehall Princess Spicehas been tearing up the DancehallArena since she entered it. She hastoured extensively and releasednumerous songs. She hascollaborations with variousdancehall artists including VybzKartel who released their monsterhit song “Ramping Shop”.

Spice is not only an excellentlyricist, but her style and flow is ‘offthe chain’. Her stage act is veryraunchy but entertainingnonetheless. Spice will beappearing on Sting 2012.

BUSY SIGNAL

Busy Signal is now out of prisonand back home making more hitsongs. He recently released a singlewith part of the lyrics boasting that‘everybody tun artist’ which is a verythought provoking song but truenonetheless. Busy released hitsongs like “One More Night” and hadthe ladies ‘weak’ with his sexy videoand deep bass voice. This artist isalready a shining star and will not bedeterred by all the negative vibesthat are coming his way. He has‘brushed’ it all off and continues toshine.
