REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S VIEWS

LUCIANO

Asuperstar in his nativeJamaica, Luciano

combines his love of God andbeauty into a soulful, spiritualblend of rock and R&B-tingedreggae. Born JeptherMcClymont in Davey Town, hebegan his musical career singing

in church and moved to Kingstonto pursue music professionally. After McClymont had workedwith prominent reggaeproducers like Herman Chin-Loyand labels like Aquarius and SkyHigh, Homer Harris of BlueMountain changed McClymont’sname to Luciano. Luciano thenreleased singles for labels likeBig Ship, New Name Muzik, andSky High, and began workingwith longtime producer Phillip“Fattis” Burrell. However, thepressures of constant recordingand performing caused him toleave the music scene in 1993 toregroup and reconsider his life.

His return, 1995’s WhereThere Is Life reflected Luciano’ssabbatical with its spiritual,

contemplative style, and foundcritical acclaim for its artisticintegrity and stylistic diversity.Luciano’s sacred approach to lifeand music fills his other albums, including 1996’s After All, 1997’sMessenger, and 1999’sChampions in Action. GreatControversy was issued twoyears later, as was A New Day.Serve Jah was issued in 2002,followed by 2003’s “Tell It fromthe Heart”. “Lessons of Life”from 2003 teamed the singerwith the hot production crew FatEyes while 2005’s “Upright”featured the production of DJFlava and marked Luciano’s firstrelease on the Kingston label.

POP UP

JULION’S VIEWS WILLI WILLIAMSTHE MAN, THE GORGON,THE ICON

Last Friday, I went toWilli’s place. I am

working on a Canadian reggaecompilation and thought that itcould not be considered ascomplete unless I approachedlegends in the game like LeroySibbles, Jojo Bennett, WilliWilliams or Leroy Brown. Tospeak of their contributions toreggae worldwide as well ashere in Canada would lead tomore pages than I am able towrite. First and foremost, I ama music fan! One of the musicthat moves me GREATLY isreggae! I consider it the true‘soul’ music as it captures allpeople from all countries theworld over, more than ANYother genre can boast. Thereis no place on this planetwhere reggae isn’t played orheard. My venture into therealm of ‘myspace’ confirms itdaily and gives me contact to

bands, artists and musiciansthe world over. Why it movesMexicans, Americans, Dutch,Germans, Philippines,Japanese, Africans, Italians, the French, Belgium,Alaskans, Australians,Chinese, Pakistanis, Indians,English, South Africans,Brazilians and EVERY othernation too numerous tomention is mind boggling. Why didn’t R&B, or classicalmusic, or Rock, or even thePolka take over the planet?Reggae music! So as I buildthis compilation, I build it as afan. I go and find music andartists that I like. And as Isearched I needed toapproach the legends.

Willi Williams is one suchlegend. www. williwilliams.com. Our initial conversationwas by phone, I called acouple of times but he was inPuerto Rico performing, then Ifinally got him, told him ofwhat I was trying to create areggae compilation forwww.canadinreggaeworld.com and his initial answer was,“Good luck with that!” andseemed about ready to hangup the phone. I scrambled tostall the dial tone and told himthat I understood how and whyhe felt the way he did, but Iwas on a mission and wouldnot stop coming at him until herelented. So I went to hishome. We discussed some ofthe reasons for him not evenattempting to get music to the

radio personalities here inCanada as many of them feelthat they are actually starsthemselves and that unlessthe music is not directly out ofJamaica it can’t be played, ormore accurately, if the artistresides in Canada it definitelycan’t be played. Even if theartist is an icon! This brethrenis as quoted as any in the PunkRock movement as a“Godfather’ based on thenumbers of his tunes that theycovered, including a band likeThe Clash and still Willi doesnot get played in Canada? Wediscussed his disgust at Flow93.5FM – he brought to myattention that Flow backwardsspells “Wolf”, I guess pointingto us as the sheep – for notrepresenting him personally orreggae music for that matter. Here is a man that is greatlyrespected in Jamaica andaround the world as still acontributor to the genre andnone of his tunes gets playedhere. Some 14 albums andTONS of written tunes thateven he can’t remember andwe can’t find a tune to play onradio?

REVOLUTION!

This original, Trenchtownfire man, calls for aRevolution! I paraphrase, “Weshould all (reggae artists andfans) walk down to the Chumbuilding and set up and don’tmove till they acknowledgeour presence and play our

music. We are residents here!Pay taxes here and NOT ONEOF OUR TUNES IS PLAYED onAC radio! We want it played! Not on one station, but on allof them!”

Shit, he got my bloodboiling and I was looking formy stick and a piece ofcardboard to make my sign.Fun and jokes aside, it didmake me think even deeper onthis topic. People of all raceslisten to reggae musicworldwide on MANY radiostations and we reside hereand hope to hear a few tuneshere and there. No one isasking for charity! Just playthe music against what iscurrently being offered andsee if it stands the test. If wecry racism, we are called weakfor using the ‘race card’ but atthe end of the day, no matterwhat you call it, ‘de music stillnah play!’http://www.williwilliams.com/discography4.htm I listened tothe tune on this page for theentire length of this article.Couldn’t get tired of it! So thecompilation is complete, and Iwas unable to get a tune fromthe “Gorgon” as time did notallow for our schedules tomesh. But I am still and willalways be a HUGE fan of hiswork, his humility as aRastaman, his wisdom and thefire that he still blazes. Hail tothe Gorgon, Willi Williams.

CAPLETON BLAZEDTHE DOCS - CollieBuddz Promote TheHerbsBy Sophia “Iyamtheiah” Daniel

Amulti-nation crowdgathered at the Docs to

witness Capleton and CollieBuddz in concert. It’s been awhile since Toronto got achance to welcome a freshinternational talent. The bigherb tune by the Bermuda-bornCaucasian stirred a buzz in thedancehall community. Torontowas eager. Expectations wereset high for Collie Buddz and itwas soon time for him todeliver.

Turn tables spun for a whileand J Logix almost concealedthe long wait using perfectselection. Tréson took thestage first and it was great thathe did - for it takes a certainkind of artist to please awaiting crowd. An acousticversion of “Legalize It” set thetone for the night. The crowdwas definitely mesmerized bythe singer’s showmanship.Peter Tosh would have beenproud. For the remainingsegment Fulla Band alongsideTréson’s heart-touching voicerocked us through a journey oflove and reality. Included inthe unforgettable performancewere the hit singles “Moments”and “Jenny Rocka”. Big thingsare in store for thisphenomenal entertainer.

Toronto’s upcomingTrebleton kept the positivevibration with “Life InThe City”.His rapid dancehall styledemanded the audience’s keenlistening skills and he got that. All were tuned in. “Finally theherbs man come around”.Collie Buddz hit the scene with

a short medley and asexpected the crowd went nuts.A significant amount ofEuropean ladies took over thefront lines screaming andwhaling for the new artist. They were not alone! Theentire Docs drew nearer.“Tomorrow’s Another Day”received an overwhelmingresponse and Buddz’ voicecould not be heard over thecrowd’s when he sang “ComeAround”. Collie performedmostly girl tunes with little orno emphasis on serious issues.Perhaps he doesn’t considerhimself a messenger? In anyevent the ladies seemedpleased.

Other artists to bless thestage included Fire Lion, JahThunda, and Toronto’s JahYouth. Later, the fire startedbackstage with Capletonyelling “Wi Bun Dem Out, WiBun Dem Out…Holy EmmanuelI, Selassie I, Jah RastafarI!” Aflaming red suit burst on stage.King Shango uttered:“Capleton bun maternityinfirmity, mi bun Bird Flu, AIDS,E.U., G8…” It was show time! The Fireman started “Jah JahCity” and the crowd finished it.As we know, Capleton alwaystalk to the massive so beforegoing further he spoke ofMarcus Garvey’s vision of HaileSelassie I’s crowning in 1930.

With his eyes closed foralmost the entire showCapleton literally performedhits on top of hits. “SlewDem”, “The Wicked Man WillHave To Fall”, “St Mary MiCome From”, “It Was anInvasion”, “Hunt You”, “LookGood In Her Clothes”, “NumbaOne Pan Di Look Good Chart”were a few. He even invitedthe audience to request songsduring his extensiveperformance. Cell phones litthe venue saluting theenergetic Fire Man. Everyonehad at least one hand up atsome point especially during“Dash A Fire”. Prophecy Bandwas outstanding keeping upwith The Prophet.

Toronto clearly lovesCapleton. In fact, he tooksome time to render a specialappreciation for the people.

He spoke of Toronto being thefirst place he traveled to byplane as an artist. “Torontobless mi and send mi out innathe earth…” While there is stillroom in the dancehallfraternity for role models,Capleton holds his own. “ROCKAZ REJOICEDURING ROYALVISIT”Editorial and Photo By: Halina T.Di-Lallo - Calgary, Alberta

The Royal Family ofReggae, ‘Morgan Heritage’touched down in Calgary aspart of their Canadian tour onSaturday March 3rd atMacEwan Hall Ballroom, U ofC. The hall slowly began to fillaround 9 p.m. and the soundsystem pumped out someserious old and new riddimsadding to the growingexcitement. Having never seenthem perform live, I waitedwith excited anticipation forthe night to unfold.

Around 10 p.m.,MC for theevening, ‘Tullo’ from CJSW90.9 - Level The Vibesintroduced the opening act,‘SYA’ from Toronto who wasbacked by Calgary’s ‘Kindread’Band. After a short set,Calgary’s ‘IBO’ stepped ontothe stage. I was totallyimpressed by their set, theycertainly showcased theirdiverse musical abilities fromconscious roots to ska theycertainly are a first class act. Itwas just after 11 p.m. wheneveryone got to their feet and

headed to the front of thestage which filled instantly -the first note rung out. Theband played a taster of whatwas to come and the nextinstant, Peter and Grampsstepped onto the stage. It wasa very special moment; it hadthat feeling of musical historyfor Calgary.

Without the sweet sensitivevocals of Sista Una who isspending time at home being amum, the family carried on inpure spiritual bliss. The setwas around two hours long, comprising of new and old. They captivated the crowd withsongs like “She’s Still LovingMe”, “Tell Me How Come”,“Down By The River” and afavorite of dreads and non-dreads alike “Don’t Haffi Dreadto be Rasta”. Gramps andPeter took the lead vocals andplayfully exchanged the leadplaying off of each other’sstrengths, clearly showingtheir impressive vocal skills.

Words cannot express howimpressively Morgan Heritageperform. Their stage presencewas exceptional, somethingwhich can only be achievedafter many years in thebusiness. They are a truereggae blessing and a bandthat I believe will continue toamaze the reggae world foryears to come. Gramps andPeter fed off the vibes of thecrowd, who were dancing, whistling and shouting praises. The atmosphere was electric, giving the impression of acrowd much larger than wasactually in attendance, andwith the intimacy of a smallvenue you almost felt like youwere on stage with them. Thiswas a special night, thememory of which we’ll keepforever. A huge respect mustgo to the opening acts, “SYA”,“IBO” and “Kindread” Band fortheir perseverance and hardwork to gain recognition inCanada. Also to the sponsorsand all those involved inpromoting the night, but mostof all a massive respect to themighty legends themselves –“Morgan Heritage”.

BLACK UHURUFeat. MICHAELROSE AT MIRF2007

The most successful ofthe second-generation

reggae bands, Black Uhurumaintained their high qualitydespite numerous personnelchanges in their 16-yearhistory. The first reggae bandto win a Grammy award, fortheir 1983 album Anthem,Black Uhuru was, according toReggae: The Rough Guide,“The most dynamic andprogressive reggae act of the1970s and early ‘80s.”

Black Uhuru, whose namecomes from the Swahili wordmeaning “freedom,” wasformed in the Waterhousedistrict of Kingston by Ervin“Don Carlos” Spencer,

Rudolph “Garth” Dennis, andDerrick “Duckie” Simpson. When the group experienceddifficulties securing a recordcontract, Spencer left topursue a solo career andDennis joined the WailingSouls. Simpson, who remainedthe thread throughout BlackUhuru’s evolution, re-organized the band with Errol“Jay” Wilson and quivery-voiced lead vocalist MichaelRose, compared by TrouserPress to “a Rasta cantor.”Accompanied by the rhythmsection of Sly Dunbar ondrums and Robbie Shakespearon bass, Black Uhuru createda sound that made them amatch for any reggaeensemble. Their debut album,Love Crisis, released in 1977,included the anthemic hit “ILove King Selassie.” Threeyears later, the album wasremixed and released as BlackSounds of Freedom.

With the addition ofharmony singer Sandra“Puma” Jones, an Afro-American woman who held amaster’s degree from

Columbia University and was aformer member of the femalegroup Mama Africa in 1981,Black Uhuru entered theirmost commercially successfulperiod. In addition torecording a memorable studioalbum, Red, and an excitinglive album, Tear It Up, thegroup reached its peak withthe release of Anthem in 1983.Remixed and revised forrelease in the United States, the redone version was re-released in Europe shortlyafterwards.

Michael Rose, is one ofJamaica’s most distinguishedsingers, as a member of BlackUhuru Michael Rose was oneof the foundation stones of theroots movement, beforelaunching a successful careerin the modern dancehalls. Hiswork with Uhuru helped bringthe group a Grammy, while hisdistinctive vocals launched anentire musical style -theWaterhouse sound. TheKingston neighborhood ofWaterhouse is where Rosewas born, on July 11, 1957.There, Rose grew up with a

love of music, and began hiscareer when barely into histeens competing in talentcontests, and then workingthe North Coast hotel circuit.

At 15, he returned to thecapital and cut his first single,a DJ version of Andel Forgie’s“Woman a Gineal fe True” forproducer Newton Simmons. That barely hinted at what wasto come. Soon after, Roselinked up with childhoodfriend Sly Dunbar, whobrought him to meet producerNiney Holness. The singer cuta number of songs for Holnessduring 1972: “Clap theBarber,” “Love Between Us,”“Freedom Over Me,” and bestof all, “Guess Who’s Coming toDinner.” Although, none ofthese songs fired the charts,Rose was already putting intoplace a sound and vision thatwould shake the music world.Through Holness, Rose alsocame to cut a song for LeePerry, “Observe Life”; it toodid little. Check out BlackUhuru @ the Montreal Int’l.Reggae Festival 2007.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S BAND/GROUP SPOTLIGHT

THIRD WORLD

Third World is one of thelongest-lived reggae

bands of all time, and one ofJamaica’s most consistentlypopular crossover acts amonginternational audiences. Whilethe band was long capable ofauthentic roots reggae, theyusually preferred to mix inelements of R&B, funk, pop,and rock (and, later on,dancehall and rap). Puristsoften criticized their music astame and polished, overlybeholden to commercialconcerns. Indeed, they wereregular visitors to theAmerican and British chartsduring the ‘80s, but the best oftheir output was undeniablysatisfying on a creative level aswell.

Third World was originally

formed in 1973 by keyboardistMichael “Ibo” Cooper andguitarist/cellist Steven “Cat”Coore. Both had receivedformal training at musicschools in Jamaica, and bothhad played around theKingston reggae scene beforejoining the original lineup ofInner Circle around 1968.When they left to form theirown band in 1973, they tookInner Circle bassist RichardDaley with them, and alsorecruited drummer CarlBarovier, percussionist Irvin“Carrot” Jarrett, and leadsinger Milton “Prilly” Hamilton.Barovier was quickly replacedby Cornell Marshall, and thegroup made its live debut thatyear at Jamaica’sindependence celebration.Having all their own musicianson hand, Third World didn’tneed to rely on sound systemsto play records that weren’tpractical to duplicate live. As aresult, they found it difficult toland a label deal, since mostlabels in Jamaica wereoperated by sound systems.

KYMANI MARLEY

Following in the legacy ofhis father’s footsteps,

The following year, “TheJourney” was eventually re-released in the United States. Many more records appearedin Spring 2001 on “ArtistsOnly”. Kymani wll beperforming at the MontrealInt’l. Reggae Festival 2007.

Barrington Levy’soutstanding career as a top-class reggae vocalist beganmore than two and a halfdecades ago. In the late1980’s, Barrington Levy beganworking with veteranproducer Jah Screw, andtogether they created some ofreggae’s most memorablerecordings.... There was theclassic album of Barrington’sgreatest hits dubbed BroaderThan Broadway, which is oneof the best reggae collectionsever created. This wasreleased on the pioneeringhip-hop label Profile, whichhelped Barrington to becomemore recognizable in thecrossover market. After astunning performance on the1993 Sunsplash, Barringtonwas signed to MCA Records, but quickly parted ways withthe label and began workingwith Jah Screw to make theDuets album, where Levyteamed with all the hottestDJs from Beenie Man to LadySaw. He came back largerthan life with Bounti Killer onthe song “Living Dangerously”- undisputedly the biggestreggae song of 1996, both inJamaica and the UnitedStates, and for months heldthe #1 spot on the dancehallcharts worldwide. Calledreggae’s ‘Mellow Canary’ byvirtue of his strong, pure vocal

style, he’s renowned as thefirst original singer of thedancehall era, inspiring manyimitators en-route.

In 1975, Barringtonrecorded his debut track “MyBlack Girl” with the MightyMultitude. During these earlyperformances, his singingwas often informally recordedand sent to places in Englandand the U.S. The first foreignrelease, “A Ya We Deh”, wasfollowed by a major hit with“Collie Weed”, produced byJunjo Laws for Jah Guidance, and others like “Twenty-OneGirls Salute” and “Mind YourMouth”. Producer Henry“Junjo” Lawes discovered himsinging on a local sound-system, and wasted no time intaking him to Channel One forthe first of many hit singles in1979. In 1983, Levy made abig splash in Great Britainwith “Under Mi Sensi”, a tunethat spent 12 weeks toppingtheir charts. With a plethoraof original material and anoutstanding, immediatelyrecognisable voice,Barrington simply could notfail, having hit after hit for notonly Junjo but also AlvinRanglin (Life Style), DelroyWright (Live & Learn PresentsBarrington Levy & BeresHammond) and in 1984George Phang’s Powerhouselabel, who released the MoneyMove album to critical anddancehall acclaim. That sameyear Junjo produced Prison

Oval Rock which took thereggae world by storm.Barrington had also shownhimself to be a creditableproducer in his own right, releasing one track “Deep InThe Dark” on his own BLlabel, but this situation was toprove short-lived. Help camein the shape of Paul Love, akaJah Screw . Their firstrelease together was “UnderMi Sensi”, immediately thesong became a classic, staying in the reggae chartsfor weeks on end. It wasclosely followed by“Murderer” for Jah Life, andthen Barrington and JahScrew’s “Here I Come” in1985 which was a nationalchart-hit through a majorlabel deal with LondonRecords. Once again hejoined forces with Jah Screwfor a delightful cover of BobAndy’s Studio One hit “TooExperienced”. After astunning performance on the1993 Sunsplash, he signedto MCA and promptly beganwork on an album with Sly &Robbie in Jamaica. The firstsingle, “Work” was arevelation; Barringtondelivering an uplifting culturalmessage over an infectiousdancehall bogle riddim. TINGA STEWART

Neville “Tinga” Stewartcareer began in 1969. His

first recording was with ErnestWilson of the Clarendonians titled“She’s Gone” and “Old Old Song”.It was followed by a hit “Hear theTrain” produced by Derrick Harriotwhich secured Tinga’s positionearly in his career. In 1971, Tingajoined the “Borris Gardner Band”as the lead vocalist. In 1973Tinga went solo and immediatelyscored a second hit “FunnyFeeling”, produced by LloydCampbell. His success with the1974 winning Festival song, “Playde Music” written by Ernie Smith. With confidence, and a wellestablished career, Tinga wrotethe following year festival song,“Hooray Festival”, for his brotherRoman Stewart.

In the year 1981 he walkedaway with a winning song “No WehNuh Betta Dan Yard” written bySangie Davis, produced by RitaMarley. Now a seasoned artist,Tinga has focused more on studioworks with modest success andcompleted two albums on JohnCarrol’s “Callabash label” titled“Key to Your Heart” and “I FeelThe Music”. MIKEY GENERAL

Mikey General made aseries of noteworthy

singles for the British Fashionlabel in the 1980s, then movedto Philip “Fatis” Burrell’sXterminator label, where hehooked up with soon-to-besuperstar Luciano. The twosingers left Xterminator to formtheir own Qabalah First label, which brings us to Exalt Jah. Onthis album, Mikey General isjoined by guests that includeLuciano, Adigun Minkah andTurbulence for a modestlyenjoyable but not reallyoutstanding set of modernroots-and-culture songs.

Accompanied mostly by arhythm section centered arounddrummer George Miller andbassist Donald Dennis (thoughSly Robbie put in anappearance, as do Mafia Fluxy),General phones it in on thesloppy “Pretty City,” and wimpsout on the overly laid-back “FlyAway, Runaway.” When he getsenergized on “In Times LikeThese,” it causes him to losetrack of the chords and startsinging painfully off-key. Butthere are bright spots, notably“Red Ina Rome” (a combinationtrack with Luciano), and themuscular “Love Chant.”

Unfortunately, those are notenough to redeem what isultimately a rather lacklustereffort from a talented singerwho has done considerablybetter in the past. MikeyGeneral will be performingalongside Luciano and DeanFraser on the “Unplugged” BoatCruise on July 15th for theMontreal Int’l. Reggae Festival.Tickets are $60-$70 andboarding time is 11:30pm toreturn at 3:00am.
