Membership includes more than 80,000 students
– Publishes over 30% of the world’s literature in electrical and electronics engineering and computing
– Annually sponsors and cosponsors more than 450 conferences worldwide
– Offers over 800 active industry standards
How IEEE Membership is OrganizedGrouped into geographic areas reflecting where we live and work …
– 10 Geographic Regions319 Regional Sections1,526 Student Branches
…and technical areas based on our fields and interests.– 39 Societies and 5 Technical Councils
1676 Chapters
Current Issues facing IEEEMembership Decline– Mostly in region 1 – 6
Common question often asked– What am I getting from IEEE?
Lack of awareness of IEEE benefits among Industry partnersLack of interaction between different Industry professionalsNeed involvement at the grass root level– Joint effort between the volunteers and IEEE HQ– Reaching out to Industries

Need to grow
RAB requirement industry relationsobjective
1. Promote and inform the concept of IEEE as a progressive technical information provider to industry and its employees.
2. Promote and inform the relevance of support of IEEE in developing/changing technologies.
3. Work with industry to establish an understanding of their needs, to determine their further needs and to demonstrate how IEEE can help address their needs.
4. Encourage the establishment of Leadership Training within the Regions and Sections.

Industry Benefits from IEEE
IEEE impacts industry productivity, branding, and profitability via access to Intellectual Property, development of Standards, professional development of engineers, preparation of students
Industry Benefits from IEEE
More Patents Cite IEEE Information
Referencing to IEEE papers has increased 267% in the last decadePatenting has increased 76% in the last decadeAs patenting becomes increasingly important to corporate valuation, IEEE information becomes more essential to the acquisition of patentsCurrent patents build on IEEE information far more than they did a decade ago
Industry Benefits from IEEE
Employee participation in conferences and workshops provide– Professional Development– Recognition of individual employee contributions– Ability to benchmark competition– Branding opportunity/recognition for the company
Continuing Education– Standards Education, and certification opportunities
Industry Benefits from IEEEProvide Access to Associations who might be interested in your products and servicesRecruiting talented employees– IEEE jobsite http://careers.ieee.org– Sponsoring Technical Conferences– Networking with Technical Society Chapters– Building relationships with Student Chapters
Industry Benefits from IEEEStandards Enhance Corporate Competitiveness and
Profitability

Industry Relations - Functions
1. Identify the local industries and the key players that affect IEEE goals
2. Identify the local industries which either employ IEEE members orpotentially have need of IEEE products and services
3. Survey of local industry to determine the IEEE membership/involvementof employees.
4. Promote IEEE to industry as a relevant information provider to enhancetheir employees technical expertise
5. Develop a program to counsel members to promote IEEE to employers
6. Provide local IEEE volunteers with the means to advocate IEEE toindustry.
7. Promote sharing of industry training courses with IEEE sections andchapters and vice versa.
8. Track committee and local volunteer industry contact.
9. Recognize industry for contribution to the technical and professionalachievements relevant to IEEE. Recognize industry for high level of IEEEinvolvement.
Tentative plans for IEEE Industry Liaison – Region 1 Objective : Increase IEEE awareness among the industries within Region 1 for the benefit of both IEEE and employees of different industries
Possible benefits:– Increase IEEE membership from Industry– Increase industry participation in many IEEE related events and conferences– Give a chance to the leading industries to take advantage of IEEE’s resources (e.g. Enterprise Xplore)– Give a chance to the employers to reward their employees (e.g., Fellow, other IEEE awards)– Increase cross industry relationship via IEEE (e.g., talks, special interest group)
How?– Get help from IEEE HQ, use successful models from other regions (e.g., region 5, region 8)– Institute an industry liaison representative for each Section with the help from respective Section chair– Figure out a list of industries within each section to engage with– Make presentation about IEEE with the help from an IEEE official from HQ, section liaison, membership
development chair– Request an IEEE liaison from each industry employer within each Section– Invite industry speakers to IEEE sponsored chapter meetings, section meetings– Arrange periodic telecon among the section liaison representatives for planning
(e.g., 4 times a year)– Report periodic progress to Region 1 director and get feedback
What have we done so far– Initial planning phase has taken more time than expected– Many of the sections have established their local industry liaison– We have started the dialogue with IEEE HQ (Pete Sobel)– Plan to have Metsac level IEEE-Industry symposium– Have communicated with Region 5 Industry Liaison James Leonard to learn about their activities
Get your team in place now and update the IEEE databaseOrganize around staff resources, the MD Kit and upcoming eventsMake a plan (resources, activities, schedule, budget)Welcome back the Sections, Chapters, Students Branches in your areaPromote networking amongst all members (higher and student too)Promote Senior Member upgradesPut Member Get A Member cards in everyone’s pocketPut a MD Desk at local conferences, seminars, meetingsPut a meeting notice up at work (ask first)Put PR in the local media (promote the benefits of IEEE)Make IEEE a part of the upcoming 2008 Engineering Week activities
