Got ELLs? Teaching English Learners in the Social Studies Classroom*For grades 4-8

Teaching Social Studies to ELLs will assist teachers in engaging students through scaffolding to make content comprehensible for the various language proficiency levels found in classrooms. Teachers will increase academic achievement and assessment of English Learners through these strategies.“It can be quite challenging to provide students with a robust understanding of social studies when they lack common background experiences or shared cultural norms. Social Studies teachers must not only teach students about the history of the world and of American society... but also teach them how the people, places, and events have been preserved for posterity to influence modern society.” according to ELL specialist, Tina Beene.Fee: $25

Grading and Progress Monitoring for Students with IEPs

While students who receive special education services are required to have annual individualized education program (IEP) goals, these goals are not a substitute for the grading assignments linked to the general curriculum. Instead, IEP goals identify specific areas of need in which a student will receive specially designed instruction from a special educator in order to access and progress in the general curriculum. Rather than substituting for or supplanting the general curriculum, IEP goals help a student access and progress in the general curriculum. Because teachers of all students exercise judgment in grading in the classroom, there is room for subjectivity to enter the grading arena. This becomes especially challenging when teachers are also implementing IEPs in both self-contained and inclusive settings.Join us as we take a deep look into grading students with disabilities and monitoring and measuring progress on IEP goals.

Annual Differentiation Symposium-Student Driven Differentiation with Lisa Westman

Student-driven differentiation shifts the focus from what students are going to do to what students need to learn. The focus also shifts from the teacher as the owner of the knowledge and the students the receivers of such knowledge. Student-driven differentiation requires teachers to find a healthy balance in their relationships with all students, use multiple types of evidence to ensure student growth, and partner with students in the process.• Shifts the focus from what students are going to do to

what students need to learn• Requires teachers to find common ground with all students• Creates learning environments where students have

control over their learning• Gives students the autonomy to create, learn, and grow

at their own pace• Requires honest and mutually respectful teacher-student
