Study finds more water inside moonCLEVELAND, 27 May—Parts of the moon’s interior contain as much water

as the upper mantle of Earth, 100 times more than previously measured, USresearchers says.

Scientists from Case Western Reserve University, Carnegie Institution forScience and Brown University discovered water along with volatile elementsin lunar magma inside crystals trapped inside tiny volcanic glass beadsreturned to Earth by Apollo 17, a Case Western release said Thursday. Theorange-coloured beads, no bigger than a period on a page, came from deepinside the moon during volcanic eruptions.

“These samples provide the best window we have to the amount of waterin the interior of the moon,” James Van Orman, Case Western professor ofgeological sciences, said. “The interior seems to be pretty similar to theinterior of the Earth, from what we know about water abundance.”

The concentrations of water and volatile elements, including fluorine, chlorine and sulfur, in lunar magma are almost identical to concentrations insolidified magma from primitive terrestrial mid-ocean ridges on Earth, theresearchers said. The same team, in a study three years ago led by AlbertoSaal, a professor of geological sciences at Brown University, found the firstevidence of the presence of water in lunar volcanic glasses.—Internet

US scientists develop new clean energy technologyLOS ANGELES, 27 May—US scientists have developed a new clean energy

known as Direct Methanol Fuel Cell for future Pentagon and commercialapplications, it was announced on Thursday.

This novel fuel cell technology uses liquid methanol as a fuel to produceelectrical energy, and does not require any fuel processing, according toNASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which partnered with the Universityof Southern California (USC) in developing the technology.

Pure water and carbon dioxide are the only byproducts of the fuel cell, andno pollutants are emitted, said JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles.

Direct Methanol Fuel Cells offer several advantages over other currentfuel cell systems, especially with regard to simplicity of design and higherenergy density, JPL said. Current systems rely on hydrogen gas, a substancethat is more difficult to transport and store. “JPL invented the Direct MethanolFuel Cell concept and also made significant contributions to all the facets ofthe technology. These contributions include: development of advancedcatalyst materials, high-performance fuel cell membrane electrode assemblies, compact fuel cell stacks, and system designs”.—Xinhua

BP oil spill partly blamedfor Gulf dolphin deathsMIAMI, 27 May— The deaths of over 150

dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico so far this year is duein part to the devastating 2010 BP oil spill and thechemical dispersants used to contain it, a reportsaid Thursday.

A total of 153 dolphins have been found in theGulf so far in 2011, according to the NationalOceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).Sixty-five of the mammals were babies.

In a study on the effects of the spill, marineexpert Graham Worthy of the University of CentralFlorida, along with 26 other experts, said thedolphins were found in a part of the Gulf that sawnearly five million barrels of crude leak in the worstoil spill in US history.

“I suspect what we might be seeing are severalthings coming together to form a perfect storm,”Worthy said.

However, unusual cold waters that were partiallyto blame are also conditions that the dolphins couldnormally survive — so the deaths “may also beseeing an indirect effect stemming from the BP oilspill,” he said.—Internet

NEW YORK, 27 May—A Californianteam say they have managed to converthuman skin cells directly into function-ing brain cells. The scientists manipu-lated the process by which DNA istranscribed within foetal skin cells tocreate cells which behaved like neurons. The technique had previously been dem-onstrated in mice, says the report inNature. It could be used for neurological

research, and might conceivably be usedto create brain cells for transplant.

The scientists used genetically modi-fied viruses to introduce four different“transcription factors” into foetal skincells. These transcription factors play arole in the “reading” of DNA and theencoding of proteins within the cell. They found the introduction of thesefour transcription factors had the effectof switching a small portion of the skincells into cells which functioned likeneurons. Unlike other approaches, theprocess did not involve the reprogram-ming of the skin cells into stem cells, butrather the direct transformation of skincells into neurons.

Chicharito a hero in toughtimes for Mexico

Manchester United managerSir Alex Ferguson

LONDON, 27 May — Sir Alex Ferguson'slove affair with Europe began as a teen-ager when he was among the 135,000fans who crammed into Hampden Parkfor Real Madrid's destruction of EintrachtFrankfurt in 1960. Watching the fabledMadrid of Alfredo Di Stefano and FerencPuskas demolish Frankfurt 7-3 left a last-ing impression on Ferguson, who hassaid the match “epitomised all the dreamsof European football”.

Ferguson has been captivated by Eu-rope ever since and milestones such asCeltic’s win in 1967 and ManchesterUnited's victory over Benfica the follow-ing year remain etched in the Scot'smemory. “When Celtic won in 1967 Iwas with the Scotland team abroad inHong Kong,” recalled Ferguson this weekas he prepared for Saturday’s Champi-ons League final against Barcelona.

Since then Ferguson has won theEuropean Cup twice, with United stun-ning Bayern Munich 2-1 in injury time in

1999 before downing Chelsea in 2008.Now, more than half a century afterwatching the white-shirted matadors ofMadrid torment Frankfurt at Hampden,Ferguson is on the threshold of his ownpiece of European history.

If United beat Barcelona at Wembleyon Saturday he will equal Liverpool leg-end Bob Paisley’s record as the onlymanager to win the European Cup threetimes. Typically, Ferguson thinks Unitedshould have more victories in the Euro-pean Cup than their wins in 1968, 1999and 2008. —Internet
