Hello Wingers

Region H “D” Newsletter LA District June, 2014

Well another month has gone by, WOW!! It has been fast for us. We started by attending the Texas and Arkansas rallies. Both were great. Texas had to deal with a little weather, but the fun carried on, even with some liquid sunshine. The Texas Team put together a fine party, but you need to be involved to enjoy all the semi-nars and games they had planned for us. The way home was tough with rain 75% of the way. In the middle of the two District Rallies, we attended our own Chapter M’s Rally. Again everything went great and they had guests attending from the Texas District. I think everyone left full and had a great time. Next we moved on to Arkansas. The weather and riding were excellent and the rally was a blast. We’re proud to say that 26 members from the Louisiana District attended. We would like to congratulate Dave Millet for first place in his class in the bike show. Chapter K took advantage to attend some much needed seminars. In between seminars, they also took advantage of the great riding in the area. As always, the District team was involved in judging all the different contests our sister District does for us when they attend our Rally. Also, Mickey Searles won the non-moving light show and our District team took first in knit shirt. We need to men-tion that both districts had outstanding attendance at their Level 4 lunches. As we write this article, we are preparing for our Trike course in Lafayette this Saturday and planning for a trip to the Missouri rally in Branson. Remember, if you’re making plans to attend Wind Ding, go online to sign up to help Region H in the bike show. But most of all, remember to wear PURPLE to support Tim and Becky in the International Couple of the Year Selection. Let’s all wish them luck and turn out to support them in Madison, Wisconsin. Until next time, ride safely, attend seminars and have lots of Fun

2014-2015 LA District Couple Lorrie and Mike Judice

Hello Goldwingers

The last two weeks have been busy. Lorie and I started off by attending the Texas District Convention in Tyler, Texas. We arrived on a Thursday but couldn’t beat the rain there. We had to ride in the rain for about a half hour, so that wasn’t so bad. After we arrived, we headed to the Historic Aviation Memorial Museum for opening ceremonies. We toured the museum which was very educational and got to watch the Chapter airplane flight contest. Afterwards, everyone was treated to a root beer float and the 50/25/25 drawing. On Friday and Saturday, we headed to the Harvey Convention Center where we were able to attend some very informative LTP seminars, watch the bike show and light competition, play games and win door prizes. We also attended the Couple of the Year selection. Congrat-ulations to Cliff & Gillian Allen on being selected Texas District Couple of the Year. They both did a great job. On Sunday, we headed home along with District officers Red and Brenda Roussel, Merlin and Beverly Mayon and Tim Dinnel along with Chapter LA –B members Eugene and Kathy Wyble. Unfortunately the rain found us again as we would hit showers along the way, but everyone made it home safely. On May 17th, we attended Chapter M’s Mud Bug Rally in DeRidder, LA. Everyone had fun playing games, participating in the auctions and of course eating boiled crawfish and bris-ket. Thanks to Chapter M Director Robert Partigianoni and the staff of Chapter M for put-ting on a fun rally. And of course on the way home, we all made a stop in Rayne at Dairy Queen for ice cream! We are now making plans to attend the Arkansas District Rally in Harrison, AR. We are hoping the weather will be nice for bike riding because Lorie and I have never been to Ar-kansas on the bike and would like to ride some of the great roads they have there. While in Arkansas, we plan to go to Branson, MO (another first for us) since the convention will only be ½ hour away. Looking forward to seeing familiar faces while we are at the convention and also meeting and making new friends. More to follow on the convention and our trip to Arkansas next month………

Most MSF instructors will tell you to dress for the fall and not the ride. Of course we don’t ex-pect to fall when we mount up on our bikes, but one has to plan for it anyway. At least one needs a contingency plan, and always have an out in any situa-tion. We have seen riders wear-ing only shorts, sandals, and maybe a tank top. How much protection does that give? Not much, even it he doesn’t have a fall. What about the sun with its ultraviolet rays and its long term effect on the skin? Of course this is cumulative and we all have probably been sunburned when we were kids, but any der-matologist will tell you to cover up when outside and exposed to sunlight. Cover up when out riding. What do we cover up with? Begin with the feet. Always wear over the ankle shoes or boots. I have gotten on my bike with just tennis shoes on, know-ing better, but I did it anyway. It seems that I always bump or scrape my ankle on something

harder than my foot. It hurts too. Wearing boots or over the ankle shoes will certainly help. Jeans and light weight leather will give you minimal protec-tion. I have conversed with rid-ers that have gone down while traveling at a higher rate of speed, and they all say that jeans will be shredded shortly. Even the lighter leathers will come apart, but they both offer more protection than shorts and a t-shirt. Cordura and Kevlar will give you a lot more protection, but are costly. Kevlar is a man made material that is a result of the space program. One can buy Kevlar gloves, jackets, and pants. Heavy leather that is sown with Kevlar threads, or ballistic, will offer even more protection. One should never ride without gloves. Get a good leather or Kevlar glove. Wearing the fin-gerless type glove is not recom-mended by the MSF. They offer

little protection anyway, and certainly not the ends of the fin-gers. If you value all of your fingers, get a good glove. I have heard that cheap gloves are one of the first items to come apart if you go down. I will mention helmets and eye protection in another article, but get a good helmet. We are trying to prevent road rash or even more serious inju-ry. Thank goodness, I have nev-er experienced road rash, but have seen people that have. It is not a pretty sight, and does not heal overnight. So until next time, “Keep the shiny side up” and when you come to a fork in the road, take it” Charles Parker RE, GWRRA La. D

“By the Book” articles are intended to help familiarize GWRRA Volunteer Leaders and Members with the policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer’s Handbook (OHB). A copy of the Officer’s Handbook can be found at the following Internet website: www.gwrra.org/oconnect/officerhandbook.html Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District, or Chapter newsletters.

Changing of the Guard

GWRRA no longer specifies a tenure of office. As long as the Officer is enjoying their position, the

appointing officer is happy with the performance and the Members are having fun, an Officer can

remain in position as long as they wish. But eventually every Officer within GWRRA moves on –

hopefully voluntarily, but sometimes its necessary to remove an officer. Let’s address the voluntary departure or retirement first. We've

discussed the procedure for appointing a new officer previously. So lets discuss what happens as part of the transition.

When an Officer resigns, they shall turn over to their appointing officer or their replacement: 1) all materials of that office; 2) all proper-

ty of that office (copy machines, file cabinets, etc.) paid for with funds generated by that office; 3) all fund balances generated for the

operation of the office along with a full accounting and financial report. In other words, anything that belongs to the Chap-

ter/District/Region that is in the Officer's possession should be turned over to the new Officer. The transfer should take place within a mu-

tually agreeable period of time, but MUST NOT exceed 30 working days. The Appointing Officer should then forward the Officer Change

Appointment Worksheet to the Home Office along with a new signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for processing.

In the unfortunate situation where an Officer must be removed from Office, the process is pretty much the same as above with a couple of

additions. The appointing Officer with direct authority over the removal must provide the reasons for dismissal, steps taken to correct the

situation and all supporting documentation. The affected party should also receive a copy of the GWRRA grievance procedure outlining his

rights. All discussions relating to the removal should be kept private, only involving the appropriate parties. This should all be done with

care, discretion, and respect for the affected parties – after all, they are volunteers. I like to refer to the process as 'tearless termination'.

Copies of all correspondence and documentation must be forwarded to the appropriate Region Director and the Director of GWRRA.

The more you know, the better it gets!
